Letter from the President Dear Graduates,

here is no doubt that Commencement is one of the best days at Salt Lake Community College. It’s our opportunity to honor and recognize each of you for your dedication and accomplishments. It’s the exclamation point on many years of hard work, diligent study and sacrifices. This Commencement, for the class of 2020, will go down in history as an unprecedented celebration. Given the move to remote learning, the postponements or cancellations of spring celebrations and the uncertainty of the next few months in your journey, what is usually an exclamation point may seem more like a question mark, and I imagine the questions are endless. It’s no secret the world is full of challenges, but I hope you will heed the words of the French novelist Gustave Flaubert. In a letter of encouragement to the family of one of his proteges, he famously wrote: “The principal thing in this world is to keep one’s soul aloft.” These words ring true today as we navigate the best ways to overcome difficulty and cultivate joy in ourselves and others. What keeps my soul aloft is imagining the power of this graduating class. I think of the power of your collective minds and hearts as you enter the workforce or embark on your next educational journey having experienced such a tumultuous time. I have no doubt that the empathy, perspective and knowledge you have developed during your SLCC experience will bring you the confidence, purpose and strength you need to soar. Having navigated this time of fragility and concern, you have a deeper understanding of the connectedness of the human spirit and the power of a collective, learned community dedicated to solving wicked problems. You wouldn’t be where you are today without resilience, courage and hope. As you move forward in life, keep an eye on the elevation of your soul and endeavor to keep it aloft by noticing the goodwill of others, by recognizing your own strength and by finding delight in unexpected places. Keep it aloft by continuing to learn and by generously supporting others in their quest for knowledge. Keep it aloft by pursuing the life that brings you joy. Look to the future with confidence and generosity and don’t ignore the goodness! The 13th century poet, Rumi, once said, “If everything around you seems dark, look again you may be the light.” I congratulate you and look forward to the brighter tomorrow you will build for us all!

ife’s greatest lessons are not found in success but in adversity. Tim Huval has known both. Success came through hard work to rise to the top of the health insurance industry. Adversity came through a 12-month health crisis and near-death experience less than two years ago. The one-time SLCC student and college administrator, now chief administrative officer at Humana, fell ill with a debilitating sickness that confounded medical professionals. He ultimately was in a coma, breathing with the assistance of a ventilator, and the worst was feared. Over the course of nearly a year, Tim rallied and recovered. Through the process he gained greater appreciation for life and its myriad opportunities to connect with others. It was deeply impactful and scary, he says. “My hope is that no one ever has to experience what I experienced.” He advocates taking chances to love and be loved, to help each other and not be afraid to receive help. “Don’t wait for a life-altering event to live your life to the fullest.” Tim graduated from SLCC in 1989 with an associate’s

degree in business management and earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Weber State University in 1991 and a master’s in public administration from Brigham Young University in 1996. He joined Humana in 2012 as the company’s senior vice president and chief human resource officer, and in 2015, earned the No. 1 spot on Forbes Magazine’s Top 10 Chief Human Resources Officers list. He was named Humana’s chief administrative officer in 2019. Tim and his wife, Brenda, have deep roots at SLCC. From 1991-1997, he was director of the college’s Custom Fit Training, Continuing and Community Education Department. In 2007, the college awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, and in 2015, the college named its South City Campus child care facility the Tim and Brenda Huval Child Care Center. In Tim’s view, SLCC is important and he supports the college because of the great value it provides to students. “Community colleges give students a financial advantage, the opportunity to explore majors, smaller classes, qualified professors and flexible schedules, all while preparing students to be relevant and productive in so many different fields.”

Terry L. Grant President, Utah Market KeyBank, N.A.

Since age 11, Terry Grant has had an appreciation for teamwork and other cultures when his parents joined Amway Corporation and, with all hands-on deck, his family built a strong, direct-sales organization. Later, on a mission for his church, he learned to deal with rejection and the importance of knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses. With those skills in his back pocket, Terry went to work as a young man at ZCMI, where he met his future wife, the late Janet Reese Grant. They wed and the couple moved to Denver, where he began a 35-year banking career, starting as a teller. He graduated from Brigham Young University and then from the Thunderbird School of Global Management with an International MBA. He rose through the banking ranks at Royal Bank of Canada in Toronto and Credit Lyonnais New York, serving large Wall Street firms. After 9/11, Terry and Janet felt compelled to return to Utah, where he was given opportunities to work for other

banks and even start a new one. Five years ago, he became president of the KeyBank Utah Market, a position he still holds today. Through his working years, Terry has committed himself to treating people right and fair, taking risks that move you outside your comfort zone and listening more than you speak. He also believes in giving back without expecting anything in return. One of the ways Terry gives back is by supporting Salt Lake Community College’s PACE program, which helps high school students navigate a path to college with the aid of scholarships. “SLCC plays a critical role in our community,” he says. “Many don’t have educational or economic support systems at home and do not want to go the traditional university route.” The college, he believes, gives students the opportunity to build a firm foundation for life.

Salt Lake Community College has been awarding HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS degrees to deserving individuals since 1955. The SLCC Board of Trustees selects outstanding individuals in the community who have achieved distinction, made extraordinary contributions to their professional field and made a meaningful impact in their communities and/or to higher education to receive this high honor. 6

Edna Anderson-Taylor & Jerry M. Taylor Former Host, KSL-TV

Founder, Taylor Electric (respectively)

Hard work and a passion for what you do are the keys to success for Edna and Jerry Taylor. These principles aided Edna in developing her career and in helping her to heal during a difficult time in her life. Her husband, Jerry, also used these beliefs to help him build a wildly successful electrical contracting business in Utah. The Taylors relish talking about their lives and world travels, as well as their long history with Salt Lake Community College and how the college has contributed to their professional success. They recall how, after his three-year stint in the U.S. Army, Jerry attended SLCC’s forerunner, the Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute. In 1975, one of his first hires was a 21-year old who had also trained at SLCC, then known as Utah Technical College. The early incarnation of what would become Taylor Electric was just Jerry, his mom as bookkeeper and that first employee. As Jerry built his business, which eventually grew to employ 350, he would often hire workers trained at SLCC. “The community college has great people. Those are the kinds of workers who make businesses successful. I had good people I could trust,” he says. SLCC instructors got

to know Jerry and would call him with recommendations of students to hire. His relationship with the college continued to grow, and Jerry eventually became involved in judging national skills competitions that involved SLCC students in the trades. Edna, a graduate of South High School, which today is home to SLCC’s South City Campus, is still recognized in public as Miss Julie from “Romper Room,” which ran on KSL-TV during the 1970s. The early days of that experience, Edna says, helped her recover from the loss of her first husband. “Find your passion, what it is that you love to do that feeds you, not just materially but also your soul,” she says. “That way, you will be successful.” Jerry and Edna met in 1981 and married in 1984. After passing the Taylor Electric torch to their son Ryan Taylor in 2005, the pair has focused on philanthropy that has benefitted many throughout Utah. This includes SLCC, which in 1989 gave Jerry its Distinguished Alumni Award. The Taylors also are generous donors to SLCC scholarships, assisting many students over the years in building their futures.

Resilient. Tenacious. Insightful. Eager to learn. These are qualities Christina Andino cites for having accomplished so much since graduating from Salt Lake Community College in 2015 with two associate’s degrees, one in social work and the other in general education. “SLCC was a learning experience for me, both personally and academically,” Christina says. “As a student, I was navigating the life of adulthood, college and work. I experienced many challenges but was able to overcome them through the compassion and flexibility of professors and mentors.” Within the next three years, Christina earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of Utah, and she currently works as a school social worker for the Canyons School District. She also pours herself into working with FosterClub, a national network for foster youth, and as a youth coach for the University of Utah’s First

Star Foster Youth Academy. Christina was a foster child for five years and recalls a social worker denying her any voice or say in critical life decisions, an experience that has led her to be the fierce advocate for foster children she is today. “Advocacy allows me the privilege to have a voice, and it is my responsibility to use it and be heard,” she says. “As an alumna of the foster system, I have the lived experience and expertise, and I represent, educate, inspire and impact systemic and generalized change.” Christina’s experiences as an intern, advocate and leader in the community are vast, and she has many awards and honors as a result. Her advice to SLCC graduates is to get connected. “Community is everything you need because others can relate and help you through your experiences. The more involved you are, the more support you will have as you pursue your personal, educational and professional goals.”

Salt Lake Community College’s prestigious DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD honors SLCC graduates and former students for professional excellence and exemplary service in their communities. Nominees are selected for their significant achievements and contributions to their communities in their chosen professional or academic fields. It’s the highest award the college bestows on alumni. Traditionally, one female alumna and one male alumnus are selected as honorees each year. 8

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

Davis M. Smith Founder & CEO Cotopaxi

Davis Smith was in college when he read an article about an entrepreneur, Steve Gibson, who used success to fuel philanthropic endeavors. Davis was so moved, he cut out the article and carried it with him everywhere he went. “I wanted it to remind me every day of what mattered,” he says. The reminder paid off for both Davis and the people who now benefit from his entrepreneurial accomplishments. Growing up, Davis’ family frequently moved as his father’s job building churches took him to the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Ecuador. He worked hard and saved money for college, first attending Salt Lake Community College in 1996-97. He went on to BYU and then to the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute and Wharton School, earning a BA, MA and MBA along the way. Two individuals played a pivotal role in Davis’ early academic path. While at SLCC, Davis says marketing education professor (retired) Curtis Youngman’s class “spoke” to him. “I loved learning about brand building, marketing and consumer behavior,” he says. Later in college, he followed entrepreneur Steve Gibson into an elevator and asked to work with him. Davis was surprised when Gibson urged him to become an entrepreneur rather than work for one.

After college, and several successful online ventures, Davis combined his love of travel with a “poverty-fighting business model.” In 2014, he launched Cotopaxi, named for Ecuador’s Cotopaxi National Park. Today, the fast-growing Salt Lake City-based company manufactures outdoor gear in factories around the world, providing more than 1,000 jobs. When his business took off, Davis started the Cotopaxi Foundation, which provides dozens of grants in six countries to fund education and employment opportunities. One beneficiary of Davis’ philanthropy includes Utah Refugee Services, through which Cotopaxi offers “bridge employment opportunities” to help displaced individuals. Davis says he still likes SLCC for what it was in 1996, an affordable start with small class sizes and great professors. He was inspired when guest lecturers spoke in his college classes. “As a student, I was trying to soak it all in and figure out life and my passions,” he says. It’s partly why Davis still guest speaks at SLCC. “I always enjoy going back to work with students.”

Dr. Craig E. Ferrin Professor, Performing Arts, Music

School of Arts, Communication & Media

The need for creative problem-solving and leadership has increased exponentially in our complex and mobile society, says Dr. Craig E. Ferrin, SLCC’s 2021 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer. Students today must learn to be specialists and require formal training in creativity and leadership skills to be successful. Craig’s faculty lecture, titled “Instructional Agility: A Framework for Teaching Creativity & Leadership in Content Rich Courses,” will adapt several “Agile” frameworks for instructional delivery. These are iterative development approaches that evolve incrementally through collaboration. They encourage research and experimentation in the creative process. “The creative process is messy,” Craig says. “Without frameworks, creativity can spiral out of control to the point that little is accomplished within the required time frame.”

The Agile approach provides structure to the creative process by emphasizing teamwork, organization, accountability, inspection and adaptation. Craig’s presentation will seek to provide effective methodologies for improving productivity skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving; adaptability and flexibility; innovation and creativity; communication; and leadership. Craig earned his undergraduate degree and his doctorate from the University of Utah and his master’s from Northwestern University in music education. After teaching in public schools for 12 years, he joined the faculty at SLCC in 2002, where he instructs students in performance and music business. Outside of the college, Craig performs regularly with the Murray Concert Band, the Gabriel Trumpet Ensemble and Utah’s CityJazz Big Band.

The DISTINGUISHED FACULTY LECTURER is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. 10

is given by the Salt Lake Community College Foundation Board to recognize excellence in professional education at SLCC. Both full-time and adjunct faculty are eligible. The award reflects a cumulative body of teaching excellence rather than just a single year of exemplary work.

Kerry Gonzáles was fresh out of high school when she began her two-plus decades career in graphic design, working as an intern while studying at the University of Utah. She was invited to join SLCC in 1997 as an adjunct instructor of graphic design and in 2002, she became a full-time faculty member. Today, Kerry teaches seven different courses in SLCC’s Visual Art & Design (VAD) Department. She considers her work in maintaining strong, ongoing connections with alumni of the VAD program one of her greatest professional achievements. Kerry is in constant contact with more than 200 former SLCC students, and she often invites them to her classroom with a belief that current students benefit from seeing first-hand the connection between academics and career. Kerry is also a huge promoter of former students’ work and helps organize and promote the college’s annual INK show, in which alumni display their art and design skills at the Center for Arts and Media at SLCC’s South City Campus. In addition to her focus on alumni, Kerry is dedicated to recruiting new students into the program. Once a student is on board, her main goal is to prepare them for entry into a work environment. One of the ways she does this is to develop projects that challenge students to think critically and to be self-starters and persistent while maintaining a good attitude. She believes this combination of perseverance and positivity often makes the difference between success and failure. “If I raise the bar, students will learn to fly over it,” she says. 11

For one of Jodie Jones’ students in her Conflict Management & Diversity course at SLCC, what she learned in the classroom, along with extra help Jodie provided, was life changing. Other students and Jodie’s colleagues describe her as empathetic, helpful, kind, generous and patient, someone who makes learning fun and links theory to practice. Jodie began her work at SLCC in 2010 as an adjunct professor of Public Speaking and Conflict & Diversity. Since then she has taught three additional courses in communications and has become an assistant professor. Jodie has a passion for teaching and helping students succeed by training them to think critically and introspectively. She views her teaching philosophy as a work-in-progress, and she is always considering ways to improve student engagement, incorporate diverse methodologies, build a collegial community and develop robust curriculum. “I want students to leave each class with a sense that they can converse in course material with confidence, and I want students to feel they can call on the skill-sets they are learning because they are better communicators,” she says. Jodie is also deeply committed to bettering her community. She holds a master’s degree in Conflict Resolution, Negotiation and Peacebuilding and since 2006, she has maintained her status as a volunteer mediator for victim-offender mediation in Utah Juvenile Court. In 2007, Jodie received the Victim/Offender Volunteer of the Year award, and she is currently a board member for the Restorative Justice Collaborative and the Utah Council on Conflict Resolution.

Instructor, Anthropology

When she’s not digging up the past in the name of anthropological study, you’ll likely find Marisa Maughan wrangling her three small children at her home in Florida, where she teaches online courses for SLCC. Though her physical distance to Utah might seem far, Marisa’s anthropology students say she is the most engaged, invested and interactive professor they’ve had when it comes to online classes. “I teach from the heart,” she says, and she feels that the experience of teaching is only rivaled by what she felt when excavating ancient pyramids and digging in the dirt for a 10,000-year-old-skeleton in Peru. Besides training her students on how to better understand humankind, Marisa wants those who take her classes to understand that education is a means to freedom and a path to a better life. As a first-generation college graduate, Marisa herself has used education as a way out of pervasive poverty. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Utah Valley University and a master’s in Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology from the University of Sheffield in England. As an anthropologist, Marisa feels the best way to learn about the human experience is through travel, which allows one to explore new places, try new foods and experience new cultures firsthand. To that end, she strives to plant seeds of curiosity, excitement and hope in her students. Ultimately, she follows a philosophy of Albert Einstein’s, to not so much teach pupils but “attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”

PROVOST’S GRADUATES OF EXCELLENCE is a prestigious distinction that recognizes hard work, commitment and selflessness. One student is selected from each school and General Studies. Many students apply to receive this honor. These are students with excellent GPAs who typically have received scholarships and awards for their academic achievements. They have demonstrated leadership skills and a dedication toward serving others, in addition to other notable achievements related to the creative arts, athletic excellence or involvement in SLCC beyond the classroom. Carroll Glidden The professors at SLCC support students to the point of pushing us to move past our successes. Professors like Suzanne Jacobs, for example, are open to questions, going out of their way to answer those inquiries by giving you one piece of the puzzle while making you challenge yourself to get to the full answer on your own. What I feel assisted me the most with my success at SLCC were the relationships I developed with my teachers – they are interested in our plans and connecting the dots between different subjects. As a result of everything I achieved at SLCC, I feel the college has taught me to be more accepting of myself and my struggles. The most important thing I learned at SLCC was that it is never too late to really start over.”

Almost four years ago I had a motorcycle accident resulting in a severe traumatic brain injury. The first three weeks I was basically in a coma. Once I began to regain consciousness, I had to relearn everything – how to even blink my eyes, swallow, eat, how to sit up without falling over and how to stand and walk. A year after my accident, with my wife and close friends’ encouragement, I decided to start taking classes at SLCC. Automotive instructors Kirk Miller and Hondo Espil were amazing instructors. They learned about what to expect with a student who has a brain injury, took time to teach me skills that I was having a hard time grasping and showed faith in my ability to be a good student. With the help of the college’s Disability Resource Center and amazing instructors at the Miller, South City, Westpointe and Taylorsville campuses, I was able to successfully pass my classes and earn a degree. This degree from SLCC will hopefully give me the skills, abilities and confidence that I need to re-enter the workforce.”

I am originally from a rural community near Kobe, Japan. Learning new concepts in my second language has been one of the most difficult tasks for me. In all of my classes at SLCC, the faculty members were so kind, caring and supportive. They were very willing to help me when I needed it, for which I am very thankful. As a result of their help and my continuous effort, my GPA is 4.0. I also received the Academic Excellence Award (Pride in Academics) for both 2019 and 2020. I have been inducted as a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. This year, I was inducted into the Sigma Alpha Pi Honor Society, also known as the National Society of Leadership and Success. My artwork has received awards and been seen in numerous shows and printed materials throughout the college. Salt Lake Community College has given me many opportunities to excel, and I’ve strived to embody excellence during my time here.”

During my time at SLCC there were many late nights that were filled with FaceTime calls with my family and friends, text conversations filled with words of encouragement from my parents and frequent tears because I was completely overwhelmed. After finishing my first semester with four A’s and one A-, I realized going forward that I have all of the strength and knowledge inside of me that I would need to be successful in school and in life. Fast forward nearly two years later and I have minimal anxiety, and I no longer feel that I am constantly homesick, stressed and overwhelmed. I have met some absolutely amazing people and lifelong friends throughout my time at SLCC and am comforted to know that I am walking away into a bright future equipped with confidence and abilities that I need to be successful in my studies, career and in life.”

At SLCC I learned what it means to be an advocate, educator and clinician. The amazing staff and clinical instructors of the dental hygiene program have been an unwavering example of professionalism, veracity and commitment to helping me succeed. I strive to emulate their dedication to our chosen profession and making advancements in our futures. I feel that I have grown tremendously through my time here at Salt Lake Community College. I learned how to make a difference in the community, maintain my academic GPA and study hard to be the best clinician I can be. Because of my history, I am extremely passionate about giving back to my community. Through the Thayne Center for Service & Learning, I went on two Alternative Spring Break trips and completed an AmeriCorps term with Catholic Community Services. I was then hired on at the Gail Miller Homeless Resource Center, where I worked full-time while finishing school online. The reason that I love community engagement is because I was fortunate enough to get through the most difficult time in my life, and I now see that my liberty is bound with those who don’t have the same opportunities I did. I am in a position where I am able to get an education and do service for my community, and I believe that my purpose is to use that privilege to lift others up as well.”

When I started interning at SLCC’s InnovaBio lab and noticed how instructors and supervisors encourage students to think about what they wanted to do with their academics, I started to feel the pressure, a positive kind of pressure, to get more involved and have a plan. I started getting more involved in student organizations. I was already part of one club, but decided to join more clubs, start one, and do more service through the college’s Thayne Center for Service & Learning. Many awards and recognitions I received while at SLCC helped me realize that there were people around me who recognized what I’m trying to achieve and who then helped pave the way for me.”

they don’t talk about failure when it comes to success. progress, they say, is slow but steady. but my tears touch the page before the ink does. my ears burn when the word is on the tip of my tongue, but refuses to say its piece. hours pass without eating, drinking, sleeping, living to translate the song my heart sings into words. the process never goes the way i want. but maybe that’s a good thing. the path i must walk is dark and dangerous and my heart whispers its okay if they don’t know my song. it may take all my patience, but like hell will i quiet the song of my heart.

STOLE OF GRATITUDE How does a graduate demonstrate appreciation for a person who helped turn their dream into a reality? Hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t every graduate had a special person who, through moral or financial support, made a big difference in his or her life? A student may wear a Stole of Gratitude during the Commencement Ceremony. After the ceremony, the new graduate presents the Stole of Gratitude to someone who provided extraordinary help or support, such as a parent, relative or mentor. More than one stole may be worn during commencement, symbolizing that there are multiple persons destined to receive Stoles of Gratitude. Recipients will never forget the kindness inherent in the recognition and sentimental feelings connected with being presented the Stole of Gratitude. The Stole of Gratitude is a lasting symbol of love, appreciation and academic accomplishment at Salt Lake Community College.
