Applied Technology 2014

Admission & Registration The School of Applied Technology and Professional Development at Salt Lake Community College provides quality career and technical education in a flexible, competency-based format to meet the needs of students who desire low-cost training for high-skill job fields. Programs are responsive to business and industry requirements resulting in appropriate licensure, certification, or evidence of completion.

Instructional Delivery

International Students

The School of Applied Technology and Professional Development specializes in open-entry, open-exit instructional delivery. This means students may enroll weekly depending on the school calendar and available seats, and are able to complete courses when proficiency has been demonstrated and evaluated by instructors.

SLCC welcomes international students and scholars. SLCC is authorized to issue the USCIS form I-20 or DS2019 to qualified nonimmigrants. Students must complete an international application and meet all requirements to receive an I-20. The tuition rate for International Students is based on $7.35 per clock hour. SLCC accepts international students who have satisfactorily completed secondary school.

Courses are delivered in two formats: self-directed and instructorled. The majority of courses are delivered in the self-directed format. This allows new students to join an on-going class or program any time, and allows students to complete course work as quickly as they are able to demonstrate competency. Grades issued are MC (Master Competency), when a student passes a course, or NM (Not Mastered). A qualified instructor is always present to guide, coach, mentor, and evaluate progress as students work through their prescribed instructional activities. Instructor-led courses have a scheduled start and end time in which students are members of a cohort and work on instructional modules as directed by the instructor.

Standalone Courses Most courses offered through Applied Technology may be taken standalone, however some prerequisites may apply. The tuition for most standalone courses is based on $2.10 times the course’s total clock hours. Students may receive a Recognition of Achievement from their instructor for completing a standalone course (as determined by the department.)

Basic Skills Assessment The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and other standardized tests will be used to ensure adults have acquired the basic skills necessary to succeed in the training program in which they wish to enroll. High school students will work with their school counselor to ensure they have the appropriate skill levels needed to successfully complete the program of their choice.

High School Students Prior to admission, all high school students must complete the high school pre-registration form and obtain signatures from their counselor and parent/guardian. On this form, the student will indicate if they are seeking high school credit. High school students do not pay tuition but are responsible for an application fee, lab fees, classroom fees, and purchasing books and supplies, as needed. A select number of Applied Technology programs prepare students for occupational industries and clinical externships that require students to be at least 18 years old before placement or hire.

Holistic

Targeted

Instruction is designed to assist students who want to improve their reading, writing, math, and/or GED preparation skills before entering vocational training or college classes. Faculty work with students on an individual basis using a variety of instructional materials to help them achieve the desired skill level. Most work can be applied toward adult high school completion/diploma if the student is registered in adult education through their school district. Computer-assisted instruction is also provided through the Integrated Learning Lab and is designed to supplement classroom activities. Instruction is geared to meet the needs of the most elementary level adults through high school/GED/college reading, writing, and math skills.

This modality offers self-directed instruction in basic education. Each course may include topics such as reading, writing, and math. Students are eligible to enroll to improve their skills in preparation for college classes, certificate training programs or the GED. This program is designed to offer students a flexible classroom schedule. Students may schedule classroom hours any day from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The student schedule may include different hours on different days. This is necessary to accommodate students with varied work schedules. Student and instructor meet to establish goals and learning objectives using a Personalized Learning Plan.
