Race for Humanity

“beyond the bounds around a space the oppression plug is pulled”

Race For Humanity

A Villanelle by Craig Perkins

[ beyond the bounds around a space the oppression plug is pulled we advance the human race

Allah God grant us grace be with us as we stroll beyond the bounds around a space

Gandhi peace and soldier pace no banner flag or pole we advance the human race

machines of hate and greed we face their motive power and control expand their bounds around a space

though they try they’ll not displace conviction rooted in our souls so we advance the human race

the change we seek cannot erase uncounted crimes and boundless toll but we’ll advance the human race and get beyond the bounds around a space ]

Memories of my mother in summer dresses

Swingsets squeak and call my name

Memories of my mother in summer dresses

Pancakes for breakfast every Sunday

Swingsets squeak and call my name

Sunshine warms my shoulders while I remember

My childhood returns when I breathe in the trees

Scents of fresh cut grass fill my nostrils

My memories can never be lost when I’m here

Scorching sidewalks burn my bare feet

“you gave hope to my existence, and in the twilight I learned of hell and heaven”

ANGEL OF MINE

And in those days of bitter death, because of bad souls, my naked spirit and body tried to fade into that reality. Nothing consoled or healed me, but you angel of mine, you were always there for me.

Through your eyes and words, eternal wisdom, you gave hope to my existence and in the twilight I learned of hell and heaven. You never left me alone or forgotten, angel of mine, your soul embodied in a divine body not equal to anyone, so unique. From the abyss you rescued pieces of me and made me anew. It was your gift, angel of mine, forever you will live in me...

“Y en aquellos días de muerte amarga A razón de malas almas Mi espíritu y cuerpo desnudos Intentaron desvanecerse en la realidad”

Responsibility

The rain swept cold and hard, making the earth seem small and shrunken, soaked and heavy with human filth.

My eyes water and remember the feeling of safety and freedom. Knowing that experience would give way to power, all it does is get harder, there is no reward or end, only suffering and struggle. I hate being an adult, it keeps getting more complicated.

My eyes swim with memories of your voice…deep thoughts that take me far away from where I am standing, and I am forced to bring myself back from the clouds. A smile spreads on my lips and a passerby looks curious, it’s cold and dark yet the expression on my face is nothing but heat. The way you drink me in with your touch, and the softness of your breath on my cheek, sit happily in my consciousness long after you kiss me goodbye… I love you, thank you for your tenderness.

Atypical Conversation

My family lined the dinner table with spring roll wrappers, various seasoned meats, fresh vegetables, cool rice noodles, dipping sauces, and drinks. The refreshing aromas beckoned our stomachs to subside our hunger now. My older sister yells to everyone, “Dinner is ready!” The little kids, our guests, and our family started to mobilize up the stairs towards the inviting foods.

Not even a few seconds had passed before my mom stopped us. “Wait, I have to invite our ancestors to come join us for dinner first.” Disappointed and hungry, everyone heads back downstairs. The adults were used to this routine and went back to what they were doing. The little kids complained that they were hungry and asked each other what grandma was doing. I helped clean up the counter and observed.

My mom prepares separate plates of food and lines them up on the table. She opens cans of soda and beer and pours them into separate cups and places these on the table as well. Different sauces are placed into little bowls and dispersed on the table. She arranges settings of napkins, chopsticks. With the table set, she fills a small metal can with uncooked rice and sets it in the middle of the table. Then she takes a lighter and lights the incense sticks. Holding the incense sticks between both hands positioned like a temple, she brings her hands up and lays them against her forehead. Then she stands solitaire as her lips begin to move but no words escape.

Looking back at the many occasions through my twenty eight years I have watched my mom perform this traditional prayer; I have never known what she prays for. A little sorrow fills me for becoming more Americanized and never making an effort to understand the custom of this simple blessing. Instead, I have slowly let my Vietnamese heritage slip into a shielded corner. To uncover some dignity I knew was buried away, I called my mom a few days after.

1

“Hi mom. How are you?”

“Hello, good. Have you eaten yet?” My mom asked like many times before when I called her around dinner time.

“Yes, mom. I did. I have a question for you.”

“What is it?”

“Before our dinners, you always pray to our ancestors. Why do you pray to them?”

“I pray for their help to protect and bless our family.”

I probed for some more details. “But what do you pray for each of us?”

“I pray for your older sister to be healthy so she can take care of her kids. And I pray if she meets someone new that he will be good to her. I pray for your older brother to be able to find a decent job. I pray for your younger brother to do well in his current job.”

“What about me?” I asked anxiously.

“I pray that you get married soon and start a family. I am getting old and I can’t watch your kids much longer if you don’t do it soon.”

“Thanks mom.” I laughed.

“One more, what do you pray for yourself?”

“I pray that your dad will come back so we can be a complete family again.”

I paused and let her continue filling in the many details of her reasoning. I just smiled to myself and shook my head at the atypical candid conversation with my mom. It didn’t take a great act to discover the answer; instead it happened with the simple task of finally asking.

“Before our dinners, you always pray to our ancestors. Why do you pray to them?”

The One I Love

“I have been here before”

The One I Love

I have been here before

The drinking

The carrying on

The embarrassment

She will not stop

She will not shut up

She will not go to bed

The slur of every breath

It deafens my mind

Loud music blasts through vibrating speakers

As I lay in bed waiting

For this night to be over

My rage and sadness envelope me

I am a forest full of wild ferocious animals WATCH OUT

Unsuspecting you

I will unleash my fury

Sadness supersedes anger

I lay my head down

Sandwiched between mattress and pillow

I NEED SILENCE

hopeless

I have been stung my eyes are wet

Skating on a slumber of lucidity

How do I know what is reality

And what is farce

Hope is a shiny pearl hidden within

The mouth of an oyster

I trust we find it

There

You Were

“To recall those times and say, You were there.”

You Were There

You were there.

It seems you always have been there to stop my falls. Many times I found I was afraid…hurt…alone, you were there.

To heal, to help, to soothe. When all my emotions tipped over the edge. And when I almost fell into the dark Abyss. You Were There.

I don’t know what I ever would have done without you by my side in life. And even if we ever part, I’ll be proud to always be able To recall those times and say, You were there.

“When all my emotions tipped over the edge. And when I almost fell into the dark Abyss. You Were There.”

If Only

If I only had a remedy for the common cold, I could finally breathe. Suffocating from heat I awoke because the cat had started biting my feet under the chartreuse blanket made of soft fleece, for I must have been unintentionally twitching in my sleep.

Only

If“If I only had a remedy”

I am convinced I have some sort of sleep condition. If I only I had a remedy in pill form, maybe I wouldn’t wake up after only four hours of dreaming. It’d be nice to breathe easy and fall back into my slumber like chartreuse leaves settling into a puddle because

summer has ended and because we all need more sleep in the winter. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what color chartreuse is and I wish I had a remedy to cure this seasonal depression that makes it hard to breathe. The sun and its warmth is what I am longing for.

As I rumble home in my rusty car, I wish for muddled mint and sweet coconut rum because I want to feel light, to have my chest float and fall as I breathe. Watching you lay soundly asleep, I can hear The Remedy coming from your ear buds lying next to your dark hair that is anything but chartreuse.

24

I think I’ll paint my walls a calming chartreuse, or a gray, a warm gray and not a cold gray, for they say cold hues are uninviting and it just may be the remedy my stark white walls are looking for, because they are naked, with only taped Polaroids to watch me as I sleep, as I toss and turn and breathe heavily. Tonight the veins in your eyes look bloodshot as I listen to you breathe. They run rigid courses through your chartreuse eyes as I pretend to watch TV with you, but really I’m asleep. You startle me and I awake, spilling a glass of water that was for the cat. My hands stick into soft cushions to pull out the ice cubes because they are melting, and I am still on the search for a remedy.

A remedy to help me breathe, to help me sleep and live the life I want to live because chartreuse isn’t so much a color but an image for me to conjure for you inside your complex mind.

“If I only had a remedy for the common cold I could finally breathe.”

The Apology

“My eyes downcast upon the verdant slice”

The Apology

A sunlit patch of grass, with blue green blades awry, “please forgive me?” he softly spoke. My eyes downcast upon the verdant slice, searching for earth uncovered.

I did not have to look up to know, his eyes tinged with sadness, crinkled with love.

I fixed my eyes on the green spikes –sunlit, silent, stiff and still. Gently, he whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I fixed my eyes beyond the green –sunlit, silent, stiff and still.

“Gently, he whispered, “I’m sorry.”

“I did not have to look up to know, his eyes tinged with sadness, crinkled with love.”

The Meeting

What Dali Dreamed

How we were standing by a painting And talking and you walked away

How death must be like that Sudden extreme and unexpected

But climb don’t fight And a star will come

Its light will lift you Its life without horizon

It knows your heart and The music of cells

We will meet there

We will meet in that place

Between two worlds

Between fear and love

Where air is pure

Where breath itself is balanced

Wildness

Boys with sticks, twins just three years old (we have seen their heads drooped in sleep, bobbing neckless on their mother’s shoulders), ring our bell as fledgling neighbors. Ring, pound, ring, they lean on the bell without welcome.

When we won’t come out to play, they creep into the backyard through the wide-set bars of an iron fence. They beat the flowers into submission, strip rose petals in seconds. No match for the prickly stalks, they turn to magenta godetias, just two months past potting, and unleash their fullest cruelty.

They know weakness, see right through the camouflage of leafy armor around unsteady stems. They thrash the dark crepe heads, tear them apart to reveal small pulsing stars at the core.

How quickly the evidence of wildness disappears and fades, curls inward on itself, drops dryly to the grass, or retreats from a tiny corner of savagery to cry in the arms of scolding fathers.

“Who sat behind those faded keys”

IDOL HOUR

You can almost hear the ragtime music wailing from the ancient calliope boxed up behind the broken windows covered with dust. Who sat behind those faded keys, winning his daily bread? Surely he has joined the dust that now covers those same keys?

The wind whistles down the deserted street and adds harmony to the haunting tune, scattering newspapers that tell of happier times. Times when signs weren’t tacked to windows, claiming that the doors would never again open.

The words painted on the side of the building read, ‘IDLE HOUR’ conveying that many hours were drawn away here in the frivolities of intoxicating drinks. Men anxious about returning home to irritated wives, the impending wrath of a woman that he once loved fades away after each swig of hard liquor.

You run your hand against the splintering rough wood of the decaying building, and inhale the earthy scent that surrounds you, the powerful smell of age. You shiver as you wonder who came and went, who was the last person to lock the door?

“To fully understand this”

Gravity

To fully understand this weighty decision, the one holding you to the floor, gripping you with all it’s got, the very force that keeps your eyeballs from being sucked out of their sockets, you first need to understand, have a basic understanding, you first need to stand under. Stand under a suspension bridge and be thankful your feet are planted firmly to the ground. Hold an object of great value in the open palm of your hand, and be grateful it doesn’t just float away. You need to understand, stand under, Have a basic Understanding.

“A white sun blazes ferociously across the sky,”

For the Funeral

A white sun blazes ferociously across the sky, hauling the day, bringing light for our shadows in its westward dance to the mountains and the screaming sea beyond. We squint at noon, raise our hands to our eyes, and our eyes to the sky, as the brother of the earth eats the sun.

And what darkness! Alton Cole, my grandfather, had such gentle hands. When he bent to the soil green grew, life sprang up. And he spoke to us as equals, husking corn in the red desert with the sand dancing about and the fields waving in gladness. And he laughed, and we with him, teeth shining in the sun, our tired eyes squinting endlessly in his glory— and he was young again almost, we thought, almost young enough to stay.

4

And when he went away, the dark wood splashed down over the silver of his years, and we lost him to the shadows that seeped out from his bones, cancerous and cold, consuming the light that was my grandfather, and is no longer. And we squint at his ruin, raise our hands to our eyes, and our eyes to the sky, as the brother of the earth

“might stay might make me safe”

Hollow Spine Upon Waking

There is no such softness of skin to make hardness of heart bearable

and though you may be rough and calloused your kisses soothe and I have no shame

I came from the sea floor at the sound of your voice to find comfort in the color of your eyes

you are my cool neutral a stormy gray to wait in for my breathing to come back

And your fingers find my lines with ease as if they have no blindness

while deep on my waist the weight of your arms might stay might make me safe

“Coffee Break” Oil Painting by Angela Woods

Death on Monday

The morning was black as a highway, black as a shark or a buffalo, slow and lumbering,

The sky darkened as if moving into night, but it was only snow, bringing its blankness to cover what would happen next.

I saw them, a pair of geese, careful as senior citizens, stepping into the road, then pausing to think.

The minivan bore down on them, a bear on the hunt. Time did not stop, but it paused, dead air waiting for sound to catch up.

I heard the smack, an unseen hand finding an ample target, and turned, already too late, a thought never to reach the lips. Another car, then another, passed over the carcass as the partner lifted off and flew, silent as a cloud.

Death, I saw, is not an elegant surgeon, but a dull knife that appears and cannot wait.

“The steel groans in leagues beneath me”

A Pastoral for Morning

Curl of dark green fern and tip of pastures petal, wet with dew of dawn and nights long waiting, greet my sight as I walk through settling woods. Above, a red breasted nuthatch calls out to its mate, a tin horn amongst the rustling of needles and leaves, its delicate body gently shivering beneath gray-blue feathered wings. In truth,

I have never knowingly heard the nuthatch cry, never walked through field of fern or flower at dawn of day, never felt the moist breath of condensed forest air, or seen the dews slight sheen upon tall grass. I sit

upon steel truss and girder above a sprawling city, and watch the yellow smoke that rises from red brick chimneys. The steel groans in leagues beneath me, all tight braids and bonds and inner urgencies. I do see though,

outlined against fathomless sky, a single black tailed gull listing toward me in the wind. The gull cries out to me, and I would like to cry back, to tell it of distance and weight, and the world of worlds that revolves and spins about us, the inner urgencies, but my language fails me, and so, into the wind I sing.

“I have never knowingly heard the nuthatch cry, never walked through field of fern or flower at dawn of day,”
