Community colleges are more vital now than ever before. As open enrollment institutions, they provide the accessibility and flexibility that today’s students and businesses require, particularly as the gap between our economic needs and the available workforce grows. Salt Lake Community College is your community college. Our reach and impact is broad and deep. The college provides a distinct gateway to the world of higher education and offers a variety of educational pathways to serve a diverse student body. The unique combination of affordable tuition and high-quality teaching provide exceptional opportunities to meet the needs of our community. As a comprehensive community college, we serve high school students who want to get a jump on their college education through concurrent enrollment. We serve students who seek a certificate or two-year degree to enter the workforce. And, we are the launching pad for students who want to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a baccalaureate degree. Whatever their goals, our students gain the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to succeed. As we celebrate our accomplishments, we must also look ahead. In 2023, SLCC will celebrate our 75th anniversary. We have bold goals to achieve in honor of this historic milestone. Our vision is to be a model for inclusive and transformative education, strengthening the communities we serve through the success of our students. To advance our future, we must invest today in our dedicated students, our outstanding faculty, our programs and our facilities. By supporting Salt Lake Community College, you directly support the success of Utah’s future leaders. It is my honor to serve as President of Salt Lake Community College as we work together to make an excellent education accessible to everyone who wishes to learn. Go Bruins!

Our Mission Salt Lake Community College is your community college. We engage and support students in educational pathways leading to successful transfer and meaningful employment.

Building for the Future “We live in an exciting time, and we need to start planning for Utah’s future. Many of our community institutions and businesses were built for the old Utah. As we plan for the future, we need to consider Utah’s new reality and economy.” – Pam Perlich, Utah Business Magazine, March 2018 As a comprehensive community college, Salt Lake Community College’s fundamental mission is to provide affordable, accessible higher education. With our rapidly changing cultural and ethnic demographics and emerging industries needing a skilled workforce, realizing this mission becomes imperative to the health of Salt Lake County. A significant commitment from philanthropic leaders, alumni, parents and friends is vital for us to match the pace of growth now and into the future. We are engaged in a $40 million fundraising initiative to make a difference in five key areas:

Access to College – $10 million Expand our scholarship programs to be the college where all students can reach their full potential and achieve their educational dreams. • For every scholarship we are able to award, there are hundreds of students we do not have the funding to fully support.

Student Success – $5 million Support first-generation students to degree completion. • Fifty-four percent of our students are the first in their families to attend college, and they frequently face unique social, cultural and academic challenges.

High-Impact Learning – $5 million Create opportunities for every student to participate in life-changing learning programs including internships, service learning and international experiences. • Seventy percent of our students are employed while attending SLCC. We engage learners who need something different.

Industry Partnerships – $5 million Provide solutions to Utah’s pressing business and workforce challenges. • The demands of business and industry are rapidly evolving in the Salt Lake Valley.

College Development – $15 million Design inspiring, collaborative spaces for our students, faculty and community partners.

Our fundraising campaign will be transformational for our students, faculty and community. Your support is essential. 7

I’M INSPIRED. “Even though I work practically full time during fall and spring semesters, and then fulltime during summer, it’s hard to be able to save up enough money to pay for school when you have other responsibilities and expenses on your plate. SLCC Promise has definitely benefited my family so much.” –Mikelle B.

Access to College Scholarships change the lives of students who otherwise might not be able to go to college. Although SLCC’s tuition is more affordable than any other Utah institution, many students still have financial challenges and rely on philanthropic support to attend. Some students struggle simply to put food on the table and pay for basic expenses such as rent and childcare while they try to better their lives through education. For every scholarship we are able to award, there are hundreds of students we do not have the funding to fully support. Scholarships allow students to focus on their studies, as well as attend more courses each semester, which increases the likelihood they will complete their degree.

Our Goal – $10 Million Expand our scholarship programs to be the college where all students can reach their full potential without hindrance due to background or income level.

Investment Priorities Partnerships for Accessing College Education (PACE) PACE is a scholarship program created to increase college participation and graduation rates for high school students who are in underrepresented populations, are economically disadvantaged or are first-generation college-bound students. Eligible high school freshmen at participating schools are invited to enroll in the four-year program, where they have the opportunity to explore careers, enroll in courses and participate in job shadowing. When they complete the program, students receive a two-year scholarship to SLCC.

SLCC Promise At SLCC, we believe higher education should be available to anyone who desires it. SLCC Promise helps eligible full-time students pay for their education by covering the cost of tuition and fees when federal grants fall short. Degree-seeking students who receive a Pell Grant may receive assistance in meeting the gap in funding, removing economic barriers and providing a pathway to complete their degrees.

Endowed Scholarships Endowed scholarships provide opportunities for generations of worthy students to attend SLCC. Donors make a gift of $50,000 or more to endow a scholarship, their funds are invested, and the returns are applied toward helping students achieve. Donors may choose the department or program they wish to serve, from soccer to culinary arts. The endowment – and the legacy of our donors – endures for the life of the College.

9

Student Success We put students first, offering support and resources to the people who make a difference in our college and community. One of the ways we foster success is through our low faculty-to-student ratio —1:20 — which means our students receive personal attention from exceptional academic and technical professionals. We also serve as a resource to our community by engaging students of all ages, developing relationships and providing experiences that will open doors to college.

Our Goal – $5 Million Support first-generation students to degree completion.

Investment Priorities First-Generation Student Support Fifty-four percent of our students are the first in their families to attend college, and they frequently face unique social, cultural and academic challenges. Support systems incorporating academic advising, counseling and coaching are critical to helping these students achieve and thrive. We aim to add advisors and multicultural student success coordinators to help each student navigate college and create academic plans that lead to successful degree completion.

Early College Outreach Our goal is to provide high-quality experiences for students to create awareness of SLCC’s programs and to give participants early exposure to higher education. Funding will allow us to grow opportunities – from summer camps to workshops – for elementary, middle and high school students to engage with the College. Existing programs like Expanding Your Horizons, in which girls in grades 6-10 are invited to SLCC to meet female role models from our community and experience hands-on STEM activities, are excellent models for future opportunities.

I’M INNOVATIVE. Dance instructor Whitney Harris (center) pictured here with two of her students. The new SLCC Diverse Faculty Fellowship is designed to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of our faculty and support the careers of exceptional under-represented junior faculty. Fellows teach classes in their fields of expertise, receive mentoring from faculty and administrators across SLCC and engage fully in the life of the College. We currently have four faculty fellows in dance, philosophy, sociology and social work. Donor support would expand the program and create a more equitable climate of learning, teaching and working that also fosters innovation.

High-Impact Learning Seventy percent of our students are employed while attending SLCC. We engage learners who need something different, and we want every SLCC student to have a life-changing learning experience, from studying the educational needs in Wai, India, to tackling the issue of sustainable food systems with Salt Lake nonprofit organizations. High-impact learning practices have positive effects on understanding course material, student retention and, ultimately, student success. Philanthropic support of these programs will increase diversity of participants and allow students to embrace learning without the worry of simultaneously maintaining one or more jobs.

Our Goal – $5 Million Create opportunities for every student to participate in life-changing learning programs.

Investment Priorities Paid Internships Relevant, meaningful internships let students build experience, increase abilities and professionalism, and gain advantages in the job market. Investing in internships helps students bridge the gap between college and the professional world so they can succeed, whether in their first job, new proficiency or a career change, and ensure long-term career success.

Endowed Faculty Positions The endowment of a faculty position provides talented instructors with the resources they need to pursue big ideas and innovative teaching methods. Endowed support also helps departments attract diverse faculty who are esteemed as mentors, direct important initiatives and contribute significantly to the SLCC mission. Endowed faculty positions are a lasting tribute to the donor and the department the donor wishes to honor.

Service Learning Service learning is a teaching and learning method that integrates community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities. Service learning helps students achieve course-learning outcomes while also meeting community-identified needs through specific projects. Donor support provides grants to students directly related to their service-learning projects, and creates opportunities for scholarships upon a student’s successful completion of a service-learning course.

I’M INTERESTED.

Short-Term International Experience Experiences abroad change students’ perspectives on the world and themselves. SLCC currently facilitates options for Alternative Spring Break in the U.S. and two main programs for our students to take their studies international. Alternative Spring Breaks are student led, immersive service projects that explore and address root causes of important social issues, from immigration to human rights and LGBTQ+ history. Marketing 2990 incorporates India’s culture and history with education-based service projects. Students in Anthropology 2083 participate in the Primate Ecology & Ecosystems Field School in Costa Rica. Funding will expand these programs into other disciplines and open spots for students who do not have the resources to participate.

Undergraduate Research

Students in the SLCC School of Health Sciences receive hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, from dental hygiene to mortuary science, allowing them to become skilled in the science of healing and the art of compassion. Graduates are ready to serve their communities; job placement for the allied health, nursing and health professions programs at SLCC is 100 percent, with many students receiving offers of employment while still in school.

Many people are surprised to learn SLCC offers students experience in undergraduate research. Our current research topics include antibiotic resistance in Wasatch Front soil samples and fitness testing in older adults. Research connects key course concepts with student involvement in empirical observation, leading technologies, research design, data collection, analysis and exploration of important research questions. Early and active involvement in systematic investigation gives our students, especially the 73 percent of degree recipients who intend to transfer, an edge in their studies. Philanthropic support will allow faculty to develop and grow research opportunities for students.

Honors Program Development This is a new kind of honors program. SLCC’s honors program will be a personalized, engaging and transformative initiative open to all students. It will both offer high-achieving students with a challenging, affordable option toward reaching their future goals, as well as expand opportunities for underserved students and students with as-yet-untapped potential to succeed. Our model for achievement incorporates success coaches, honors contracts, in-depth seminars and peer mentoring. Our goal is to partner with local universities and guarantee admission and scholarships to SLCC honors graduates. Funding will help develop this new and unique program.

15

I’M INVOLVED. The SLCC workforce training program focuses on two areas: providing in-house training to local and regional businesses and working with the community to train people for careers. Past outreach includes training homeless individuals in construction framing, and providing warehouse and distribution training for several cohorts of refugees, leading to immediate job placement.

16

Industry Partnerships Collaboration is one of the SLCC Values: we believe we’re better when we work together. We partner with local organizations to effect change and create practical programs of study that are responsive to the needs of our region and integral to Utah’s long-term economic vitality. SLCC works to strengthen the state economy in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Manufacturing Extension Partnership, the Salt Lake Chamber, Salt Lake County UPGRADE, the Women’s Business Center and more than 500 businesses and school districts. Our students, staff and faculty benefit as much as our partners when we implement joint programs to respond to our economic challenges together.

Our Goal – $5 Million Provide solutions to Utah’s pressing workforce challenges.

Investment Priorities Workforce Needs SLCC is the primary post-secondary provider of career and technical education in Salt Lake County. We work to be the best resource for Salt Lake County industries looking for skilled workers and for students seeking job-ready training or ongoing career development. We provide competency-based education – where students advance based on their ability to master a skill or competency at their own pace – and Career and Technical Education pathways to enable students to accelerate through programs designed for high-demand and high-wage employment. There is a significant need for scholarships for students taking just-in-time training in these fields (since they are typically not eligible for federal aid), as well as for adults returning to school to achieve longevity in their careers.

Westpointe The new Westpointe Workforce Training & Education Center is a 121,000-square-foot facility designed to meet the rapidly evolving demands of business and industry in the Salt Lake Valley. The purpose-built facility and strategic location mean we can better provide career and technical education programs to meet the future needs of vital industry partners. Traditional students, workers needing to retool their career paths and employees seeking to improve their skills at work will benefit greatly from the programs and resources offered at the new center, including welding, diesel systems technology and industrial automation. With construction complete, a need remains for equipment in these highly specialized areas of study.

17

College Development A positive learning environment can transform the student experience. New and renewed facilities help create a place for teamwork, creativity and interdisciplinary activities—both on campus and in our communities.

Our Goal – $15 Million Design inspiring, collaborative spaces for our students, faculty and community partners.

Investment Priorities Herriman Campus Utah’s communities of Herriman, Bluffdale and South Jordan, are rapidly expanding in population. Growth projections for the area are double other areas in Salt Lake County. Given the explosive growth rate, establishing a college campus in this area has been identified as critical to educational and economic goals. A unique partnership with the University of Utah will let students in programs such as criminology and computer science earn a certificate or two-year degree from SLCC and remain at the Herriman Campus to earn a bachelor’s degree. Donor support will make this project a reality.

Business School Business is the second-largest degree program at SLCC, with world-class faculty and instructional innovations as school hallmarks. The home of the Business School at our Taylorsville Redwood Campus is also one of the oldest buildings on campus. We have made all the surface improvements we can to the existing structure, including new furniture and technology. The future of business education is in collaboration, integrating finance and marketing in case-study-based classes to help students understand how each component works together. A more modern design would allow us to match our teaching excellence with an environment where students are inspired to learn.

18

I’M INFORMED.

“Not only will the SLCC Campus be a wonderful resource to the residents of Herriman, but it will provide valuable opportunities to all of the communities in the Southwest area of Salt Lake County. The City is excited to partner with SLCC and we look forward to the future ground breaking of the SLCC Herriman Campus.”

— David Watts

Herriman City Mayor

Join Us Our campaign offers many exciting opportunities for everyone who wishes to participate. The widest-possible involvement of Salt Lake Community College alumni and friends is the key to our future. We hope you will join us.

Ways to Give Gifts of Cash A donor may make an outright gift of cash, for which the donor receives an income tax deduction as prescribed by current law. Pledging a gift over the course of up to five years may allow donors to make a more substantial gift while affording the opportunity to adjust the timing and amount of each payment to achieve the most beneficial tax advantage.

Stocks and Securities Donating appreciated stock can provide tax benefits. Donors who use stock to make a gift to the campaign will receive credit for the mean value of the stock or other security on the date of transfer and may potentially avoid capital gains taxes.

Planned Gifts Many different types of planned or legacy gifts may be accepted. A bequest, where property, a trust or a portion of an estate is bequeathed to SLCC, is a common vehicle, as is a gift of life insurance in which SLCC is the designated beneficiary and the premiums paid by the donor are tax deductible.

Gifts of Real Estate/Property Property may be donated outright once approved by SLCC. An immediate tax deduction is available, and this option may also avoid capital gains taxes.

We are very proud to let donors to the SLCC Foundation know that 100 percent of each donation is distributed to the people and programs they care about; there are no administrative fees or additional costs taken from your gift.
