First Year Experience
Spring 2016 N E WS L E T T ER
Welcome!
We look forward to seeing you Spring Semester 2016! This newsletter provides resources that will help you as a new student.
• New students should meet with an Academic Advisor sometime during the first semester to create an ongoing educational plan. Read the next page for details on Advising.
There is still time to register for classes:
• You may add open classes online through the first 7 days of school (January 20). • If there are no seats available, attempt to add yourself to an online waitlist—if there is one available. Then, be vigilant about checking your BruinMail email at least once a day to see if you have been sent a notification to register for the class (registration must be done within 24 hours of receiving the notification). If you are still waitlisted when classes begin, make sure to attend the first day of class, just in case. • If the classes you want are full, check out classes available in the “second half term” that begins the week of March 9.
Things to do before schools starts: Check out SLCC at www.slcc.edu
New students will receive a StartSmart email each week. These emails contain helpful tips about services and resources for new students. Be sure to watch for StartSmart emails in your BruinMail—accessible through MyPage. Join a club and get involved during Welcome Back Week! Visit with various clubs around campus and learn more about services and resources available to you during Welcome Back Week, January 11 – February 5, 2016.

This is what some of our first time students are saying about their advising experience: “It was great. I knew what I wanted. We got down to it and determined the best course.” “[The advisor] helped me decide what I should go into. I ended up going to his career class and it was great!” “I followed [the advisor’s] advice and it worked pretty well. I can say that I have a good chance to fulfill my final goal.”

The SLCC OneCard is the official identification card for SLCC and key to campus life, plus it is multiple cards in one. It is a Money Network Discover prepaid debit card, Bruin Bucks on-campus funds card, ID card, library card, and UTA bus pass. Students must be enrolled in classes to obtain the OneCard. It is a nontransferable ID card; only the cardholder may present the OneCard for purchases, access to student events, and other privileges. Tips for Your First Day The first day of school can get a little confusing. Here are some tips to help you: • Arrive early. During the first week of classes, many students are on campus taking care of business, making for crowded parking lots. In fact, parking lots are more crowded the first week of school than during the average week. • Class locations may change. If you go to the classroom listed on your schedule and the room is empty or the class title is different, look for a yellow note around the door that will notify you of the room change. If you don’t see one, check your online schedule or visit Student Express or the Office of the Registrar and Academic Records for assistance.
• Check your BruinMail e-mail for important messages regarding classes, financial aid, or events on campus. • Become familiar with the Academic Calendar on the SLCC website for important deadlines for dropping classes, adding classes, etc. • Print a copy of your class schedule and bring it with you the first few days of school. The computers are busy and there may be a line for printouts. • Double-check to make sure you are aware of the actual start dates of your classes in addition to the days of the week and times they are taught.
