Pablo Ayala The Intersections of Land and Regret March, 2022 Oil, marker, oil pastel, acrylic on canvas 48 x 50 inches / 121.9 x 127 cm $600

“This multimedia piece explores the relationship of mining companies and native connections to lands across the Americas. As an immigrant from Mexico, I aim to create conversations about what it means to be connected with the land you live on and how that comes to terms with the intersections of resources, culture and land. The figure in the distance is a personification of the cultural identity overviewing the wounds left on its land.”

Joni Ballif Turquoise Bison 2022 Bison skull, copper paint, rope, furniture tacks, cotton belt 21 x 17 x 9 inches / 53.3 x 43.2 x 22.9 cm $500

“This is a female bison that I hand carved and gave a copper paint and patina finish. This bison in particular really spoke to me. Her nose and jaw were broken in a fight, yet she survived. Those bones healed and fused on their own ... This must’ve been very painful for her but what a testament of strength, beauty and endurance.”

“Light creates beauty, even when seen through the lens of disaster. Wildfire season gives us a unique opportunity to be inspired by how it changes the light-scape we are familiar with as much as with the destruction it leaves in its wake. Whether by the glowing fires at night or the way the smoke reflects and filters the light from the sun during the day, there is something alluring about this natural act of violence.”

Robert Fuerer Father’s Journey to the Clouds September, 2022 Oil on Canvas 20 x 58 inches / 50.8 x 147.3 cm $5,268

“My mortality became real this year. Sadly, both my father and fatherin-law passed away from lung cancer. This painting is a depiction of a father rabbit passing through a veil of irises. As the sun sets on his life, he is transfigured to the sky above to be with all the other rabbits who have gone before him. The fox, on the ridge, represents cancer. Ants and earthworms symbolize decay and death. As we live our lives in the circle of life, I am choosing joy and living life to the fullest.”

“Inspired by, and photographed shortly after a near death experience, I made this set of prints without using an enlarger. I used an old 50’s film projector to project the unusually large image on the wall of the darkroom, taped the RC paper to the wall after tedious measurements, and exposed it backwards for optimal results. The duration of exposure was controlled by plugging in and unplugging the projector.”

Jonna Ramey My Utah August, 2022 Zimbabwean springstone on found steel cog 10 x 7 x 6 ½ inches / 25.4 x 17.8 x 16.5 cm $1,300

“Zimbabwean stone harkens to my first experiences carving with Shona master sculptors in Red Butte Garden 20 years ago; the spiral is a nod to Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and the imperiled Great Salt Lake; the scrub oak leaf set expresses the beauty of the Wasatch Front and its further desertification; the rusted gear base speaks to the industrialization that has contributed to the growth of Utah and to its demise.”

Christina Riccio Moody Moments: Thought Spiraling April, 2022 Earthenware, underglaze, luster, acrylic 6 x 17 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches / 15.2 x 44.5 x 16.5 cm NFS

“I utilize traditional ceramic kitsch with a personal twist to create physical responses to my emotional struggles with anxiety and depression. The empty sentimentalities of Hallmark figurines and other kitsch objects generate a calculated emotional response for the viewer; one where the machine-manufactured object, meant only for purchase and consumption, tells you how to feel. Rather than the detached nature of commercialized knick-knacks and trinkets, my work injects substance into kitsch.” 29

Rosanna Lynne Welter Wrong Patch 2020 100% cotton fabrics with raw edge applique, loose quilting, sprouting threads, rocks 33 x 33 inches / 83.8 x 83.8 cm $750

“This quilt--from when simply everything seemed to be going wrong, spinning out of control, and full of conflict and anxiety--is my small protest at so many bad situations. … This traditional-looking quilt was deliberately not pieced but composed of raw-edge patches loosely stitched to the “wrong” side of a traditional piece of calico heart-patterned whole cloth. Edges curl, loose threads sprout, quilting spirals and zigzags, sizes are not consistent, and hand stitching is rough. Really, everything about this quilt is traditionally wrong, and yet it is so right.”

“Because I am a mother of four children and sometimes only have the blink of an eye to snap a shot of an intriguing moment, I rely solely on my iPhone as my photographic instrument. I make no edits whatsoever … My photographic passion lies in finding beauty in the banal, seeking majesty in the mundane, and discovering the divine in the otherwise dull details of life.”

Clinton Whiting The View, September 2022 Acrylic on canvas 36 x 24 inches / 91.4 x 61cm $2,100

“The View illustrates a man supporting a child high above, while the man is being supported by a group of women. The idea of this piece is that we all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the people, friends, and relatives around us.”

SLCC ART COMMITTEE The planning and implementation of the annual President’s Art Show is just one way in which the SLCC Art Committee supports and encourages the arts throughout the college. We strive to enrich the college environment and inspire our students, faculty and staff by collecting and exhibiting artworks that represent diverse cultures, thoughts and expressions that embrace artistic and academic excellence. We develop, protect, display and catalog the College’s Permanent Art Collection of over 600 works. Additionally, we program the college’s art gallery spaces including The George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Gallery and LED Exhibition Wall in the Edna Runswick Taylor Foyer at our South City Campus. It is our goal to connect with the community by creating a platform for artistic dialogue and exchange, displaying the collection throughout seven campuses across the Salt Lake Valley and curating exhibitions throughout the academic year.
