Mens footwear The goal of this project was to design a collection of mens footwear for the growing Chinese market. The client was struggling to establish a clear DNA for the collection and could not therefore define what was going to be in collection. Using the Silk Road trade route as an underlying theme, I developed two lines of shoes- a ‘work’ and a ‘rest’ line- that drew inspiration from the technological innovations that came about as a result of the Silk Road. The end result is a collection that uses classic silhouettes with modern materials and masculine features that serve to highlight the essence of the brand.
Work collection This goal of this line was to take classic footwear silhouettes such as the Derby, Oxford and Chelsea boot and reinterpret them using modern materials like neoprene and breathable mesh. Rugged outsoles were also used as a way to emphasise the masculine nature of the collection.
Rest collection This goal of this line was to blur the lines between casual and formal footwear. Using classic silhouettes on modern, streetwear-inspired outsoles, boundaries can be pushed and conventions can be challenged in a way that delivers a strong DNA, a unified collection and a strong showpiece for the brand to market to a growing Chinese audience.
Pantone I was asked by Pantone to develop a set of colour cards and mood boards for the footwear industry. Using diving and the depths of the ocean as the main inspiration, I developed a set of images that were used in Pantones digital colour trend publications.
CAT Footwear: Brand positioning
This project required me to identify for CAT whether the advertising campaign for their AW13 ‘CODE’ Streetwear line was reaching out to it’s intended audience and if the shoes in the collection matched the campaign. CAT had proposed that the campaign was potentially too ‘urban’, however I viewed it from a different perspective and suggested that they should be trying to appeal to a more contemporary ‘urban’ audience instead of the fairly dated one they had suggested. Styleboards were prepared.
Freehand Illustration
Along with my design work I am also a freehand illustrator. I have worked on a range of projects including childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books, album covers, promotional posters, tattoo designs, and commissions for clients.
This large-scale commissioned piece is over 1 meter long and took over 150 hours to complete. Although there are many elements to the picture, they all combine to tell a story about the power of love. Comparisons can be made between this sort of work and shoe design; the goal is to be able to pull all these different elements together and tell a story that is powerful and meaningful.

Through the years there have been a lot of goods transported from the eastern world to the west and the other way around. Beside goods also knowledge in cultures, religions and techniques. The technique how these goods are transported has changed and improved a lot, thanks to this exchange of knowledge. From baskets on horses/camels to high speed trains, mammoth tankers and airbuses. Despite this technologic development, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still a group op people that travel the old fashioned way; backpackers. The technologic development of the way how the goods are transported is the inspiration for the BOTH footwear collection. From the beginning of the Silk Road, till now and further in the futureâ&#x20AC;Ś. Western people explore the eastern world and Asians love to travel in the western world.
