10 405 HOME FALL 2022 new season always ushers in a sense of excitement. Fall signals a sort of mid-year “beginning,” as new school schedules and a reprieve from baking heat can give us a feeling of renewal, not unlike spring. However, while spring arrives in f ashy colors and new growth, fall is more subtle, more restorative. It reintroduces structure back into our lives, often a welcome shift after a summer of travel and freestyle living. Our ways of living change seasonally, as well. We trade in cold drinks for warm ones; frozen libations for hot mugs of spice and pumpkin. Whirling fans are replaced with wooly throws and, as the crispness of autumn seeps in, we leave poolside or lake life to circle around a f re pit or chiminea. We also tend to feather our nest, and it is no surprise that we also f nd ourselves in the kitchen a little more. In this inaugural “Kitchen Issue,” we have turned our attention to what continues to be a favorite room — a place to gather, not only to cook and to dine, but also to catch up with beloved family and friends. It’s no wonder this space, termed the “heart of the home,” has become just that for Lillie-Bethmany.Sanger Brinkman brings us inside Kelsey McGregor’s beautiful home, which features a stunning kitchen, a spectac ular dining room and special designer touches throughout. Meanwhile, Evie Klopp Holzer explores several stellar kitchens, revealing the world of choices for this hub of the home. You will also f nd some unique accouterments in Gretchen Leigh Clark’s “Cozy Kitchen,” as well as local expert advice on growing herbs in a how-to article by Adi McCasland. And for you foodies, Greg Horton tells us about chef-turned-artisan David Henry and his beautifully crafted boards. We couldn’t let the season go by with out giving props to pumpkins. “Go experience di f erent cuisines the metro has to of er,” she said. “Note what you liked; and then from there, it’s trial and error. Experiment, because you can literally do anything — and all that matters is that you enjoy it.”

“I’d recommend starting with herbs you like eating,” said Angel Bench, chef and general manager at T e Boxcar in Moore.

Both Lyon and Bench advise sourcing your seeds from a local nursery or farmers market, as well as choosing an organ ic potting soil with vermiculite to keep chemicals to a minimum and provide an easier draining process. Native or zone-spe ci f c plants will also increase your chances of success, as will an organic fertilizer or a homemade compost. You don’t need fancy pots, either. T e goal is simplicity, after all, so a clean soup can will work as well as a stylish terra cotta container. Where you grow them matters more than what you grow them in.

T ough proper watering often feels elu sive, it really can be simple if you lean into your intuition. “If the dirt feels dry, feel a half inch down, then water it. And let the soil dry out completely before watering it again,” recommended Bench.

Pruning your herbs keeps the plant’s energy focused on growing leaves, so it’s important to pinch the f owers o f as you see them throughout the growing season.

Speaking of seasons, if you reach the end with an abundance of fresh herbs, you can celebrate with an elegant visual arrange ment. A variety of cut leaves in a vase is When asked how she knows which herbs to grow and which herbs to blend, Lyon encourages letting go of the idea of right and wrong.

“It’s really common for a newbie to buy hundreds of dollars worth of stu f and then feel overwhelmed. Start small — one or two pots — and let it be something you enjoy,” said Beth Lyon, culinary director at Special Care, Inc. A novice may be wise to begin with woody herbs, as they can withstand the drastic weather shifts in Oklahoma. Rose mary, lavender and lemon balm are sturdy bets for a beginner, but it’s also important to consider your palate.

Pruning your herbs keeps the plant’s energy focused on growing leaves, so it’s important to pinch the flowers off as you see them throughout the growing season. both simple and exquisite. For a more prac tical and long-term approach, you can dry them for later use.

FALL 2022 405 HOME 17 hings in the kitchen feeling a bit bland? A couple of OKC experts have a suggestion to spice things up: Grow an herb garden. Herb gardens can feel intimidating for those with the colloquial black thumb, but they don’t have to be.

“I usually stick to eight to 12 hours in light, so a bright window sill would be ideal,” said Bench. Grow lights are also an option, if you’re interested in investing a little more time and money.

“Lay some paper towels down on a sheet pan and spread your cut herbs out. Leave them in a warm place to dry, and then store them in mason jars,” advised Lyon, who is known for blending the dried leaves into teas or grinding them into spices to give as gifts.

Murray came to the gardening business after a longtime career as a petroleum landman. He had purchased the century-old home at 4027 N. Classen Blvd. to use as an ofce. But when economic calamity struck in 2019 and 2020, it became an optimal location from which to launch his garden venture.

FROM POSSIBILITIES TO PUMPKINS Murray and Boykin started their business just a few weeks before the autumn planting season. At the time, they didn’t realize how perfect their timing was. Like Goldilocks, a f re feature feels “just right” when it isn’t too big or too small com pared to the home. “One of the biggest mistakes I see is I will go into a 2,000-square-foot residential house, and you walk in the backyard, and they have an enormous f replace,” Wall said. “We are trying to get the scale to the right size and match the home.”

When designed thoughtfully and proper ly, a f re feature can be the highlight of the backyard, and feel like a natural extension of a warm and welcoming home.

Scale is another important design element.

“We knew we wanted it to be out of that stone so it had a sense of purpose and connection to the architecture of the home,” Wall said, adding that the project was a “true collaboration.” LAUD Studio determined the site design, while Swift added spe cial touches like customized copper gas lights and chimney crown.. 1

“We want people to think it was all built at the same time,” said Wall, LAUD Studio director. For a seamless e fect, Wall recom mends matching styles and materials through out the “Someproperty.peoplewant a freplace and they instantly think of Colorado — this cozy, woodland kind of feel — and that leads them to do a stone. If the house is made of stone, by all means, do that,” Wall said. “But we’ll show up on some sites and there will be this sort of rustic, stone-clad freplace with a lodge-y feel — and then the house is a mid-century modern ranch. Tose are disparate feels. Whether you have a modern, mid-century or historic home, we want to make sure, stylistically, it [the freplace] goes with the home, so it’s all one big complete home.”

Nelson Landscaping utilized the natural slope of this backyard and moss boulders to create a pondless waterfall, incorporating grasses, flowering perennials and ground covers into the design to further enhance the natural beauty of the area. “The client also wanted a firepit to sit around while enjoying the sounds of the water feature,” said landscape designer Scott Kilgo. “Both the water feature and fire pit can be seen from inside the house from the back windows.”

3. NORMAN MODERN Nelson Landscaping is at the center of this stunning fire feature. The layout com plements a 1974 home designed by Fred Shellabarger, a well-known professor of architecture at the University of Oklahoma. In keeping with the modern architecture of the house, Nelson Landscaping designed and built a modern courtyard outdoor living area with a fire pit and water feature at the center. Landscape lighting illuminates the beautiful architecture of the home, as well as the trees and walkways leading to the courtyard.

“A custom-made steel pan holds the firewood, which is welded onto the wall, with ventilation drilled into the base to let air come through,” LAUD Studio director Brent Wall explained regarding the design. “In a way, it’s super simple; it’s just concrete and steel and it’s very low tech. But that’s kind of a signature of what we’re trying to do: designs that look simple but, in reality, take some work to pull off.”

Chef David Henry carves out a niche in woodworking BY GREG HORTON PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER

Henry didn’t know much about woodwork ing prior to that decision. His father had tools, but he was a project manager for security soft ware, so there was no home woodshop. When his parents moved a few years ago, his dad gave Henry the tools.

“I’ve always loved building stu f,” Henry said. “I’m a Lego nerd; I even have some of the Architecture series sets, so when he left me the tools, I started playing around with them.”

ONGETTINGBOARD

Most of the wood he uses comes from Phoenix Hardwood & Plywood on N. Classen. His favorite is walnut — “It’s pretty” — but for his own home projects, based on his love for Midcentury Modern — “It’s my jam” — he uses sapele, a West African wood common in Midcentury furniture due to its beautiful grain and shimmery glow.

hef David Henry spent 15 years of his career at Te Coach House and Te Hutch on Avondale. Pri or to his apprenticeship in Chef Kurt Fleischfresser’s two-year program, he’d spent six years learning the craft from Chef Alain Buthion at La Baguette. Before he was a chef, though, he was working in kitchens as a way of “staying out of trouble.” “My mom was a food and beverage director for a hotel, and she’d take me to work, where I spent time learning how to work in a profes sional kitchen,” Henry said. He walked away from professional kitchens earlier this year, turning instead to a pastime that captured some of what he loved about cooking, but didn’t require the constant stress of sta fng, customer service, ordering, inventory, personnel management — all the things execu tive chefs do beyond just cooking.

“I was burned out,” Henry said. “(Chef Michael) Paske’s death, COVID, the customers’ behavior after restaurants reopened, sta fng issues — all of it was too much, so I left.”

“I’ll still help in kitchens when someone needs help, but this is what I do now,” he said. “I’m a quiet person for the most part, and spending time woodworking allows me to spend quiet time in my own head.”

Osteria’s charcuterie appetizer on Henry’s custom board

Henry said the similarities between woodworking and cooking were apparent immediately: techniques, processes, creative energy, complex steps and the satisfaction that comes when a dish/project is complete. He saw in the work an opportunity to use kitchens as a bridge to another career, and so Wild Hare Woodworking emerged from Henry’s quest for catharsis and peace of mind follow ing his burnout.

The Jackalope is Henry’s logo mascot. Chef

“I used hickory to make (Chef) Jonathon Stranger’s tables at El Coyote,” Henry said. “For his charcuterie boards at Osteria, I went with cherry and maple. I’ve sold custom boards to Vast, Osteria and Sushi Neko.” Te frst cutting boards he made were for Te Hutch, while he was still chef-partner. “I use face grain for charcuterie boards, and side and end grains for cutting boards,” he said. “Each design is unique, or the woods are unique for each customer. I don’t want to pump out the same things. I’ll use six to eight diferent species for a chaos board; I love them. I’m a chef, and I know how much chefs love tools that are unique to them, so I try to design and build accordingly.” His goal is to move onto larger projects like dining room sets and credenzas, but for now he’s content making tabletops, cutting boards and charcuterie boards for restaurants and home kitchens. To inquire about custom work, he’s easy to reach at his WildHareWW social media accounts. He saw in the work an opportunity to use kitchens as a bridge to another career, and so Wild Hare

T e McGregors’ entire four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home has turned into one that the couple loves for them selves and their four children: Mycah, 11; Holly, 9; Behr, 7; and Ruby, 5. Te Magnolia Network came to Oklahoma City earlier this year to f lm three of its rooms — the master

Tey even sketched out their kitchen plans on a napkin over a dinner date in a booth at an Oklahoma City restau rant, Kelsey said. “I just had to get it out of my head,” she said. “We had a napkin there and a pen and I kind of just sketched out what the millwork would look like, and it’s pretty much exactly what you see there.”

MARRIED TO A HOMEBUILDER, KELSEY McGregor often hears from people that it is their dream to own a home built by McGregor Homes. For a long time, her reply was “Mine, too.” Tat reply changed three years ago, when she and her husband, Scott, worked on their dream home in north Ed mond together — he as the homebuilder and she as the de signer through her full-service interior design frm, Kelsey Leigh Design Co.

Kelsey also loves the spice and utensil pullouts next to the GE Café oven and gas range with its white matte fnish and gold knobs. Te double oven, which initially she thought a compromise for space-saving reasons, has turned out to be one of her favorites; she can still cook everything she wants to in it, including a turkey.

“Everything was very intentional, both in the form and function of the kitchen,” she said. “We wanted to make sure that there was a spot for everything and everyone, and every thing had a spot.”

Kelsey said in her kitchen she was going for what her design f rm calls the “magic moment,” when you walk in and you see only balance and beauty. Te appliances are somewhat disguised to the side and not front and center; instead, the focus is on the creatively designed, symmetrical cabinetry that goes from ceiling all the way to the coun tertop, the Calcutta Oro marble used as a backsplash, the white oak accents and more. Te same white oak wood that peeks through the glass in the cabinets, stained in Sherwin Williams’ Pickled Oak color, is used on the kitchen island and throughout the house.

“We have our roots in traditional, but we like it fresh, with modern elements,” she said. Kelsey’s interest in design has been lifelong — from a very young age, she took great interest in decorating her rooms and arranging them just so. She didn’t think about doing it professionally until she started helping her husband in that capacity with the spec homes he was showing to potential buyers. McGregor Homes started winning awards for that work, such as from Parade of Homes for design, best interior, etc., and Kelsey McGregor realized she could get deeper into such work on a larger scale.

Te company’s tag line is “a million deci sions, simpli fed, beauti fed” because its goal is to help people narrow down all the over whelming choices to the right ones for their homes, Kelsey said. Hallmark values of the company include being approachable, both in terms of aesthetics and as people; family; e fciency; and beauty.

“To my surprise, there were minimal disagreements,” he said. “I enjoyed the fact that we both have similar taste, as it made the selection process way easier.”

For both, the home turned out beautiful and livable, with “magic moments” throughout.

LEFT: The side porch wall has board-and-batten siding stained to echo the exterior of the home.

BELOW: The primary bath incorporates natural elements like woven wood shades and a seagrass pendant light fixture from Palecek.

She launched Kelsey Leigh Design Co. around 2018-2019, about the same time she and Scott started working on their own home together.

Kelsey joked that couples working on homes together is “job security for therapists,” as there were “arguments, passionate talking” — but she loves the home they designed for their family. “He was very gracious, but we both had veto power.”

Soon Kelsey Leigh Design will be opening an e-commerce store, called the KLD Home Shop, with future plans to build new head quarters with a retail section in Edmond. Te store will carry some lighting, bedding, rugs, furniture and more.

I designed our kitchen, and luckily I know some great artists, installers and fabricators who could bring my rudimentary drawings to life! I designed the space to suit our family’s style: a little dose of eccentric with a classic feel to it. We cook a lot, and it was important for us to have a fun space to be together and cook together — or break out into a family dance party.”

My favorite part about this South Nichols Hills kitchen was the use of natural stone. We also wanted a cabinet front a little more modern than the typical shaker front door, so we used a slim three-quarter-inch-edge profle. We vaulted the ceiling in this space, which made everything feel much more elevated and open, and the custom built-in campaign dresser at the end of the cabinets gives the look of a furniture piece. Lastly, I love how we used the island countertop as an apron front for the kitchen sink. It added a gorgeous detail to the space! This family is incredibly organized, especially the husband. We needed a kitchen that was well-laid-out with a purpose for every single drawer, shelf and cabinet. We also included an insanely large island to seat several people — perfect for entertaining family and friends.”

I have so many favorites with this Heritage Hills kitchen. I love the mixture of classical elements, like the white cabinets’ dramatic door and drawer molding and crown molding, the black-and-white classic foors with the black and brass La Cornue. It all fts the period of a 1923 house, while the slab walnut cabinets on the other two walls really bring in the modern feel. This kitchen really represents my design style as a whole: classic modern. Timeless, not trendy. It keeps those rich elements and tells a story while bringing it current. And the design keeps your eyes moving around the room, taking in every detail.”

CONNECTING OKC DESIGNSWORLD-RENOWNEDTO BY CHRISTINA WYGANT Tile TILE HAS DRAMATICALLY shaped the world of design since it was f rst incorporated into structures around the 4th century BC. Today, this timeless material is interwoven into the practicalities of our daily existence. From our kitchens and bathrooms to our swimming pools and hot tubs, tile is laid seamlessly into our modern-day lives.

T e tile in your home says as much about you as the art hang ing on your walls. In fact, high-end designers would say that your walls and f oors are timeless art. For the most eloquent examples in the 405 and beyond, look no farther than Artisan Tile Studio, where you can f nd Artistic Tile — some of the world’s most visually stunning tiles.

Owner Sydnye Steen says that by holding the exclusive OKC selling rights to this luxury brand, Artisan Tile Studio is able to carry a wide selection in-stock of the most amaz ing and gorgeous Artistic Tile mo saics that no one else has. She and her team can help you curate some spectacular tiles for your home, including the exquisite “Breccia De Vendome,” a rare and beautiful French marble which can no lon ger be quarried. Artistic Tile is not just a well-known name; it is an integral part of a contem porary design movement that harmo nizes tile into all elements of the home. Artistic Tile showcases works that are part of an art collective, collaborations with world-class designers such as Rich ard Anuszkiewicz, Ariella Horowitz, Andrew Denny, Kelly Finley and more. T is collective fuses inspiration from the old world with fresh contemporary lines, creating utterly breathtaking and unique global home designs of today which rival any museum art. AS MORE PEOPLE have been working from home than ever before, the home — which for many had only been used during the late evening to early morning hours — has become a space even more central to life.

When the kitchen calls, we don’t miss a beat BY SARA GAE WATERS PHOTOS BY BRANDON SMITH IT’S NOT A HARD CASE TO MAKE: Te kitchen is where we all want to be. Who can blame us? T is is where the magic happens. Even if it is a formal dinner, eventually, people gather here. Te smells, the action, the antici pation of the meal — all these things draw us in. Whether we are helping or just keeping the cook company, we can’t resist the kitchen. Kitchens have transformed over the years with di ferent seating areas, so hosting visitors is more doable and convenient, and less problematic, for the person actually prepar ing the meal. Large islands with bar stool seating, maybe a small dining table, perhaps the kitchen is open to the rest of the house or at least the dining room — these layouts have deservedly become more and more popular andMymainstream.favoriteisthe beloved “banquette,” and any shape will do. A long straight bench form or maybe curved bench seating with a round table, or a beautiful upholstered settee with a table in front — all provide the perfect solution to welcoming people in, not only to dine but also to work on a laptop, have a cup of tea or savor a conversation.

It’s also a way to set out a casual meal where people can serve themselves and then f nd oth er places to sit. In “Gatherings” this season, we have loaded up the table with dessert and hot apple cider. With the long bench seating and chairs arranged in a rectangular shape, this is a place you can easily settle in and enjoy the bustle of the kitchen … Nourishment for body and soul. SUMMARY We went out looking for respected trade firms in the area. To this end, we conducted a multifac eted research process. First, DataJoe conducted a mas sive Internet research campaign to isolate the top trade firms in the region. Then, we polled the magazine’s readers, asking them to nominate their favorite provid ers in various trade areas. Finally, DataJoe conducted a massive Internet “reputation” research campaign, reviewing indicators across a wide variety of online sources, including ratings, reviews, and memberships. In the end, we utilized a proprietary algorithm combin ing all of the above metrics to then score each company. This list reflects the entities with the highest scores.

68 405 HOME FALL 2022 For the first time ever, we polled our readers on their go-to homebuilders, interior designers and decorators, and kitchen and bath professionals. We asked them, “Who do you call on again and again?” and “Who do you recommend to friends?” — and the nominations poured in. With a list of local picks in hand, we hired a third-party research company, DataJoe, to vet submissions among industry peers. Now we’re ready for the big debut, and we’re thrilled to share this list with you. Congrats to our first-ever 405HOME Industry Excellence Award winners! PROMOTION

FINAL NOTE We recognize that there are many good trade firms that are not shown in this representative list. This is a sampling of the huge array of reputable firms within the region, but it is by no means exhaustive. Inclusion in the list is based on metrics and other information that we were able to gather in our independent research. We take time and energy to ensure a fair, mul tifaceted process, although we understand that the results of this research project are not purely objective. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective trade firms may not appear on the list.

PLACE WONDEROF

he city of New Orleans has that little something that can accurately be re ferred to as “magic.” Steeped in history and lore, there is no other American city like it. Exploring the city is an endless adventure, not only a visual and culinary feast but also a call to wander. In the lower garden district you’ll f nd all of this captured in one place: the Hotel St. Vincent. Built in 1861, this red brick building beckons you with a spacious veranda on the front, furnished with outdoor wicker seating, hanging ferns and palm trees. Once through the doors, the sumptuous interiors entice you to linger and discover what is around the next corner. Mid-century furnishings, mood lighting and layered materials communicate a sense of wonder and approachable elegance. Another veranda of the Paradise Lounge awaits, as well as a Saltillo enclosed swimming pool and other intimate outdoor spaces equipped with lush, tropical plants and fountains. Te hotel has two full-service restaurants — the beautiful San Lorenzo with its banquette seat ing and coastal Italian menu, and the French-Vietnamese style cafe and bakery Elizabeth Street Cafe. T

“A ‘styled’ porch is what gives your house character and curb appeal. It is one of the most important areas and re fects your style,” Hardberger said. She suggests starting with colored glazed pots for a pop of color and lay ering mats and rugs with coordinating textures and colors. Add a wreath to the front door, and lanterns for a welcoming ambiance. Before you get to the pumpkins, other touches can include a garden stool, chair or bench; fun pillows; an antique piece like an old wagon f lled with fowers or pumpkins; and baskets for fall plants or mums. An old stool can work as a riser for adding height to pots or pumpkins, she added.

Of course, the main attraction in a fall front porch show is generally the pumpkins, which in these photos are provided by Brick’s Garden. “Use many colors and siz es of pumpkins,” Hardberger said. “ Tere are so many beauti ful varieties.”

Stairs lined with candles turn steps into a eveningbeautifultreat. Plant favorite pots with hardy mums, which can withstand a dip in temperature.

Don’t hesitate to experiment with nontraditional fall colors or an allwhite theme, Hardberger said. Include plant materials to add interest, height or texture, such as dried wheat, seed pods or wood. Look to a local garden center to f ll planters with mums, cabbage, kale and other plants, paying attention to height and color. Accent designs with fall leaves, pampas grass cattails and colorful plants like the fower cocks comb or the orange and yellow of a bittersweet vine.

COMFORTWINTER’S BY SARA GAE WATERS PHOTO BY EMILY HART 80 405 HOME FALL 2022

AS WE REVEL in the splendor of fall and all of its beauty, it can be hard to believe that winter isn’t far behind. In a few short months we will celebrate, again, with family and friends, take time of from work and school and welcome in a new year — all the while being more inside than out, perhaps under the covers a little more, accompanied by f relight and candles and all the things that comfort us. Te 405HOME winter issue is stocked with subjects to inspire you to tuck in and keep cozy. As poet Edith Sitwell says, “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the f re: It is the time for home.” We couldn’t agree more.
