Noel Williams, MD Gynecologist

Optimal Health Associates is an integrated medical practice focused on wellness and personalized treatment strategies for complex hormonal and gynecological issues. As the community experts in hormone therapy, the clinic has vast expertise in handling menopausal and testosterone depletion in both men and women. Optimal Health Associates and its providers have particular interest in providing holistic natural approaches when possible to medical conditions. This includes nutrition, hormones, stem cell derived therapies and many others all based on the best science available.

Benjamin J. Barenberg, MD

Urogynecologist

Urogynecology is a sub-specialty of OBGYN that focuses on complex surgical gynecology and disorders of the pelvic patients by utilizing cutting edge therapies and surgical techniques that are not commonplace in general gynecology. I tailor medical, surgical, and alternative complementary therapies for each of my patients. I strive to maintain patient centered care by using shared decision making with my patients when treating their medical concerns.

Cassie Smith, MD Endocrinologist

Endocrinology is the study of all glands that secrete hormones. I practice endocrinology because of its complexity, and my fascination with human physiology. Understanding how hormones work with or against one another throughout the body helps provide superior patient care. My favorite part about endocrinology is helping patients understand their disease processes, and then providing them with the knowledge, resources, and treatments they need to help them live their best lives.

Getting Away — but Not Too Far OU R FA M I LY ’ S T OP T H R E E VAC AT IONS : 1. Maui 2. Disney Caribbean cruise 3. lakefront Airbnb at Lake Eufaula One of these things is not like the others, right? This past spring break, our family was tired and stressed and needed a getaway. Due to budget and having a new puppy, we decided to stay somewhere close to home. At the last minute, we booked a small pet-friendly cabin a few hours away. We took the kids, the dogs, a large stack of boardgames and crafts — and ditched our phones. We slept in, explored nature and watched movies. It was the very definition of chill; nothing about it was fancy or exotic. Nevertheless, somehow this little trip ended

up being exactly what the doctor ordered. Our kids still reference it all the time and ask to go back. I learned a really valuable lesson that week: Vacations do not have to be in exotic lands or cost a month’s mortgage. They don’t even necessarily have to be planned too far in advance. As long as you’re having intentional quality time with your family, your friends or just yourself, that’s what matters. For our annual travel issue this year, senior writer Greg Horton and I decided to focus on some of the best that the Sooner State has to offer. We’ve compiled “Your Oklahoma Bucket List” — 11 can’t-miss experiences you can have on our home turf. (pg. 36) In this month’s second feature, Evie Klopp Holzer interviews the ones usually doing the interviewing as she highlights five OKC podcasters doing big things on an international scale. (pg. 52) Also in this issue you will meet OMRF’s inspirational new president (pg. 24), journey through a fashion spread featuring the season’s hottest accessories (pg. 26), check out inimitable tacos (pg. 86), hear what surprises Lyric Theatre has in store for its upcoming summer season (pg. 102) and celebrate non-profit Cleats for Kids’ 10th anniversary (pg. 110). I hope this issue gives you that last little push to make the time, spend the money — though hopefully not too much — and book the trip!

O N J A N . 4 , D R . A N DY W E Y R I C H moved from Utah to become the new president of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Standing in view of the beautiful buildings that make up its campus in downtown Oklahoma City, his assistant, Gina Leeds, let me know that he probably would not allow me to call him Dr. Weyrich: “He’s wonderful. And he’ll just have you call him Andy.” She is not the only one to hold a high opinion of the new president. Len Carson, chair of OMRF’s board of directors, said, “We searched for a visionary scientific leader who would build on OMRF’s reputation as home to the best and the brightest in research. Dr. Weyrich is in a class of his own. He is a highly respected researcher who will propel the foundation to even greater heights.”

Weyrich, a National Institutes of Healthfunded investigator, came to the foundation through the University of Utah, where he was the vice president for research. An internationally recognized leader in blood clotting, his discoveries have facilitated key advances in the field of hematology. OMRF is Oklahoma’s prized non-profit research and treatment facility. Since 1946, it has been conducting biomedical research and developing new breakthroughs and medications in research areas such as Alzheimer’s, lupus, multiple sclerosis, cancer and diabetes, just to name a few. While there are other medical research organizations like this across the United States, Weyrich says what sets OMRF apart is the board and the diverse community of donors. “We are supported by a huge donor

“We are supported by a huge donor base made up of many different kinds of people across Oklahoma. That was what attracted me to this place. It’s non-profit. We don’t do this work to make money, we do it to change lives.”

base made up of many different kinds of people across Oklahoma. That was what attracted me to this place. It’s non-profit. We don’t do this work to make money, we do it to change lives.” Walking down hallways of labs and scientists hard at work, he explains his future goals for the foundation. “I am working to meet with each and every one of the scientists here. Part of my job is to build trust with them and then begin to build on our current vision. I also want to further raise awareness all over Oklahoma about what OMRF does. I want to be able to attract more investigators to share in our work.” Over the next year, in celebrating the 75th anniversary of OMRF, Weyrich plans to visit all 77 counties in Oklahoma in order to spread the word about the incredible work that the facility does. He wants to raise awareness and invite every county in Oklahoma to take part in the work. Dr. Weyrich — or Andy, as he might ask you call him — explains that many days at lunch, the courtyard is filled with colleagues talking about their current research with another. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to join in the work here. No matter where you stand politically, everyone supports this place and our mission. OMRF brings everyone together.” 405MAGAZINE.COM

Changing the Judicial Landscape

JUDGE NIKKI KIRKPATRICK GIVES VOICE TO THE VOICELESS

A

S THE FIRST AFRICAN-

American woman to be appointed to a countywide seat as a District Judge, Nikki Kirkpatrick gives hope to the hopeless and a voice to the voiceless. She brings her unique perspective to Oklahoma County District No. 7 as an ardent protector of the law and individual rights. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Judge Kirkpatrick grew up in a household steeped in poverty, where her father struggled with substance abuse and her mother worked two jobs. She was taught the value of hard work and faith at an early age. Despite being the target of racism herself, she felt compelled to defend and protect others and give everyone a voice. Judge Kirkpatrick carries those lessons with her still today. “Being a District Court Judge who maintains fairness, integrity, and dedication in all I do instills confidence in the public that the scales of justice are truly balanced,” she said. “People need to know that they can trust their government leaders, and the greatest benefit a good judge can provide is a safe, fair, equitable place to handle disputes and assert one’s rights.” Judge Kirkpatrick is proud to be part of the progress being made at the Oklahoma County Courthouse toward equality and diversity. “The Oklahoma County Courthouse has seen a revolution in the last several years, most notably landmarked by the wave of five women candidates who all won their judicial elections in 2018,” she said. “Diversity on the bench engenders trust among the public that the rule of law is for the benefit of everyone regardless of their position or status.”

Kirkpatrick graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Central Oklahoma. Carlton Landing his charming resort-style community is on the shores of Lake Eufaula in eastern Oklahoma — a walkable cluster of homes, small businesses, parks and activities. The architecture is idyllic and you won’t find anything else like it in the state. It was designed by DPZ, the town planning firm that created Seaside and Rosemary Beach. There are community pools, hot tubs and plenty of lakeside activities such as canoeing and paddle boarding. Town eateries and shops surround communal fire pits and make for wonderful family memories. Carlton Landing goes all-out on holidays, and is renowned for its 4th of July and Halloween celebrations.

The Skies Over Skiatook or those who struggle with folding fitted sheets, the idea of folding a parachute — with the caveat that if you get it wrong, you may die — may be a deterrent to checking the “jumped out of a plane” box on your bucket list. Skydive Airtight in Skiatook simplifies the process by offering tandem jumps on your first visit. Sign a waiver, then meet your instructor, who will give instructions, answer questions and go through a safety briefing. That’s it. You’re ready to go, and being strapped to your instructor makes the whole experience worryfree, allowing you to enjoy the view.

he wild history of Robbers Cave dates back to its time as an Osage hunting ground and as the object of French exploration in the 19th century. The area got its name when several famous deserters and outlaws reportedly hid in the cave, including the James, Younger and Dalton gangs, Belle Starr and Ned Christie. The location and local terrain made the cave a near-fortress, with the criminals allegedly able to escape through a secret back exit. Today it is a scenic, and hilly, refuge for nature lovers and wildlife. Several companies and farms provide guided horseback riding through the mountains, with variations appropriate for riders of all ages and skill levels. Located near Wilburton about an hour southeast of Lake Eufaula, it encompasses more than eight thousand acres, three lakes and many tourist amenities including rentable cabins and campgrounds. 5 mi nor th

Red Rock Canyon eople typically go to Red Rock Canyon for one of three reasons: camping, hiking and church camp. The natural rock outcroppings provide for at least one other activity, though: Because of the ease of climbing the cliff walls, rappelling is a popular activity at one of the state’s most beautiful areas. The relatively low canyon heights also make it a perfect starter course for beginners. The drive to Hinton is a quick one-hour shot up Interstate 40. If you go to rappel, check in with the park office and sign a release. There is no equipment rental, so take your own gear. There are also important park rules related to pets, property, behavior, etc., so be familiar with them before heading out.

Fans of the Food Network star flock to the shop and eatery, up to 15,000 a day. The Boarding House is a small hotel down the street from The Merc. Ree and her husband Ladd had a hand in decorating each of the eight rooms, and all are unique.

Hot Air Balloon Rides lying high above the world is an incredible experience anywhere, but in the great plains you can see practically the entire state. Even those typically afraid of heights have reported finding the experience peaceful and serene, like a dream. There are several ride vendors around the state and two large festivals where they gather and create incredible photo opportunities. The FireLake Fireflight Balloon Festival is held in Shawnee August 1213 and the Poteau Balloon Fest is held on October 14-15. Keep in mind that since it is such a windy region, these flights are often weather dependent. We recommend going in the early evening to experience those famous Oklahoma sunsets!

t took no time at all to add Gathering Place to the list of reasons to visit Oklahoma’s second largest city. While it’s best known as a massive playground for kids — and you’ll wish this sort of playground equipment existed when you were a child — the riverside park offers activities for all ages and athletic abilities … including, mercifully, sitting in the shade. Swing Hill offers an unobstructed view of downtown Tulsa from the park’s highest point, where in a stroke of genius, swings were installed. Important note: Swinging is an all-ages activity, and always will be. Williams Lodge is home to the restrooms, amenities, snacks, etc., to make your adventure more civilized. For athletes of all ages, there are sport courts, a skate park and expansive lawns for frisbee and football, or picnicking if that’s more your speed. You can also find running and biking paths, kayaking, paddle boarding and nature encounters.

ince we’re working on a list that at least partially invites confronting fears under the guise of “vacation,” let’s talk about claustrophobia. Forget YouTube videos or The Descent; the opening to Alabaster Caverns is more inviting and much less fear-inducing. The caverns are a rare human-friendly gypsum cave complex with activities for amateurs and “wild cavers.” Spelunking requires a permit from the park office, so no setting off on your own. For the amateurs, guided tours happen every hour on the hour from 9-4 daily, and the views range from stark to breathtakingly beautiful. On a good day, you’ll see at least a portion of the bat population and live out that scene from Batman. Be sure to tie your hair back.

eady to learn a fun and relatively safe activity that manages to be exhilarating without risking life or limb? 405Kite offers professional kitesurfing and kiteboarding lessons at Lake Hefner in NW Oklahoma City. The company distinguishes between the relatively sedate kiteboarding, which happens on flat water, and the more airborne kitesurfing on choppy waves. The beauty of both is that no motor is required, and since Lake Hefner seems to be one of the breeziest spots in the state, wind power is available year round. A $150 beginners course covers everything from equipment and safety to basics and terminology. Classes are also available for more advanced surfers.

This Is Oklahoma When looking for the beauty of Oklahoma, look no farther than its people. “Oklahoma has special people. You don’t have to leave the state to accomplish great things,” said Mike Hearne, an English native who came to Oklahoma on a golf scholarship in 2011. Today, Hearne explores the stories of notable Oklahomans, prompting them to discuss who they are, what they do and why they do it. Many of his guests have been inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, as it is a sponsor of the show. This Is Oklahoma is approaching 200,000 total downloads.

We Are for Good Nonprofit industry veterans Jon McCoy and Becky Endicott aim to amp up the good for everyone. Their podcast (and cast of impressive guests) supports people in the nonprofit realm with the latest insights and easy-to-implement advice. They hope their content helps do-gooders do better. “Impact isn’t made by faceless institutions or by buttoned-up organizations. It’s the people,” Endicott said. “We believe philanthropy — and the act of giving — changes people, and it has a trickle-down effect. So by equipping nonprofit leaders with the mindsets and tools to build philanthropic movements, we believe we can literally change the world.” HOSTS: Jon McCoy and Becky Endicott FOCUS: Revolutioning the nonprofit industry by sharing insights on

Metro Library Podcast Oklahoma history buffs, this podcast is for you. Skilled historians flex their research muscles with host Sheldon Beach, discussing some of Oklahoma’s most interesting and lesser-known moments in history and taking listeners deep into our state’s great stories, beyond the microfiche. “I think a lot of people think we’re just the land run and the bombing, but there’s a lot more to it than that,” said Beach, adding that the state is so much more than “boomers and sooners.” Beach admits a library podcast is never going to be as popular as “My Favorite

Murder,” but the bone-chilling “True Crime” episode on the murder trial of Dr. Richard Thacker may have you coming back for more. HOST: Sheldon Beach FOCUS: Obscure Oklahoma history PREVIOUS TOPICS: The last witch

Thunder Buddies

“This podcast helps people find clarity and love well.”

Thunder fans, listen up. After the post-game press conference, Oklahoman sports writers huddle to analyze every aspect of the game — the outstanding plays and players and what it all means for the OKC Thunder moving forward. “If you’re a Thunder fan, you should be tuning in,” said host and Thunder beat writer Joe Mussatto, who collaborates with sports columnist Berry Tramel on the podcast. “This provides another voice in our Thunder coverage. It’s a little looser than the postgame stories that we write and a little more conversational,” Mussatto said. “Sometimes I sit back and let Berry tell hilarious stories that I’m sure our listeners appreciate.” HOST: Joe Mussatto FOCUS: OKC Thunder news and post-game

play-by-play banter RECURRING GUEST: Berry Tramel LENGTH: 20-30 minutes

For Love With Joy Host David Skidmore presents this podcast as a way for listeners to infuse more love and joy into their lives. “Life has a lot of ups and downs, and the past few years have been difficult for everyone. While we disagree on many things, everyone I know wants a life of love and joy,” Skidmore said. Each podcast includes a short story, prayer and thought-provoking questions. While a book of the same name will be published in July, Skidmore started this podcast to provide people with immediate resources. “There is so much noise in the world, and a lot of people are tired of veneer vulnerability, the addiction to hurry and the constant demand for more,” he said. “This podcast helps people find clarity and love well.” HOST: David Skidmore FOCUS: Helping people live for love and live with joy by facing the

beautiful and painful moments in life courageously PREVIOUS TOPICS: Living for love with joy, finding faith, experiencing

Parman & Easterday arry Parman, Founder and President of the law firm Parman & Easterday PLLC, knows firsthand the importance of an estate plan. When his father was unexpectedly killed in a tractor accident, he and his mother spent years arguing with the IRS about the estate tax that would be owed on a farm and closely held businesses. Despite Larry’s encouragement, his parents had not completed an estate plan. “On top of that, we had to endure the headaches associated with a probate during that entire time,” he said. “I decided then and there that if I ever started my own firm, I would spend every waking moment helping families understand the importance of proper estate planning.” Parman and his team stay focused on their expertise. “We do not have a broad-based practice. We focus on a narrow range of services and develop our expertise to a very high level. At the beginning of my career, I spent several years in the investment business, and we also integrate that experience into our practice.” The firm helps clients create estate, elder law, business succession, tax, and financial solutions for their families. Over the past 30 years, they have perfected their estate planning process - completing new plans within 30 days, for a fixed investment, and guaranteeing client satisfaction. “We have a clear ‘Why’ that inspires us every day,” Parman said. “We want every client to be a hero to their family. We always start with an education process for those 64

who work with us. At the conclusion of our engagements, we want our clients to achieve financial abundance, healthy relationships, and peace of mind. We operate from a set of core values – dependability; keeping our commitments; constantly expanding our expertise; being pleased but never satisfied with progress; a team-and-client-first mindset; and always doing the right thing for clients and one another. reflect how clients feel about our service.” Attorneys Larry Parman, Jerry Shiles, and Jeff Green all served our country in the military. Larry jokes that while he may be the Founder of the firm, he must salute Jerry and Jeff as he was a Captain and they held higher ranks. In addition to her expertise in complex probate and oil and gas matters, Tracy Brock’s Master of Laws in tax offers firm clients the expertise required to navigate the complexities of today’s Internal Revenue Code. Parman has co-authored two books on estate planning: Estate Planning Basics: A Crash Course in Safeguarding Your Legacy and Guiding

Those Left Behind in Oklahoma: Settling the Affairs of Your Loved One. Based on his experience as a Registered Investment Advisor, he was asked to be a contributing author on retirement planning in Stop & Think: Important Financial Advice for You and Your Family. He recently completed his soon to be released book, The Straight Shooter’s Guide to Estate Planning. From his experience as a business owner, Parman

also authored the book, Above the Fray: Leading Yourself, Your Business and Others During Turbulent Times. He is the former host of the radio show Your Estate Matters on KTOK. Recognized for his expertise in business development, Parman served as Oklahoma’s Secretary of State and Secretary of Commerce. She brings over 16 years of legal experience to each case that she takes. Over the course of her career, she has helped thousands of people fight their criminal charges and find favorable resolution when they thought all hope was lost. “We build relationships here founded on trust, respect and compassion,” Ford said. “We fight for our clients like we would fight for our own families. Our clients say coming to our office is like coming home.” Ford served more than five years at the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office, which greatly influenced her career in criminal defense and victims advocacy. The firm focuses on helping their clients never come back into the criminal justice system by identifying the underlying issues that brought clients to the firm in the first place. “Although our primary goal is to get the client through the system, we believe we can stop the cycle of violence and addiction by treating the whole person to become the best version of themselves,” she said. Trompudo’s Does Tacos Al pastor excellence in southside OKC BY G R E G H O R T O N

W H E N G UA DA LU PE “ LU PE ” G A RC I A was 11 years old, he told his father — the owner of Chelino’s — that he wanted to go to work. “My 17-year-old brother had just bought a Playstation 2,” he remembers, “and I asked him how he got it because I wanted one. ‘I saved money from work and bought it,’ he told me. I went straight to my father and told him I was ready to go to work.” He’s been in kitchens pretty much ever since, with the exception of one semester at Oklahoma City Community College when he thought he wanted to be a software engineer. “I only worked 11-4 on Saturdays at first; I was still in school, and I hated it at first, but looking back I appreciate how my father handled it. He made me start with bussing and dishwashing to learn every aspect of the business.” Garcia never became a software engineer, but he is still a self-described nerd, and instead of leaving tech behind, he has found a way to incorporate it in his own restaurant: Trompudo’s Tacos at 6015 S. May Ave. It’s still a very rare kind of restaurant in OKC — a southside taqueria with a full bar — and it’s also one of the very few places in the city that carves “al pastor” (grilled or roasted pork) straight from a “trompo” or spit. After the liquor laws changed in 2018, low-point beer disappeared, and so did beer lists in southside taquerias. The new law required an upgrade in licensing, and many owners simply passed, sticking to tacos with aguas frescas, agua de jamaica and horchata, as well as Topo Chico and sodas. Garcia opened last year without a bar, but his plan always included margaritas, palomas, craft cocktails and beer. He finalized everything in March, and started bar service late that month. The bar list was built with input from guests; Garcia put a form at the register so his regulars could let him know what beers they wanted on the list. “I have all three Coronas, because I love Corona, but all the others came from customer suggestions,” Garcia said. Customer service is always uppermost in his mind. In fact, Trompudo’s started as an idea that emerged from Garcia’s habit of studying other restaurants. 86

JUNE 2022

Each taco has a salsa designed for pairing, and the cocktails go with all the food.

“I’m fascinated by Steve Ells, the founder of Chipotle,” he said. “I’ve been involved in restaurants long enough now to know the ups and downs of full service, and even before COVID, quick service restaurants (QSR) looked like it would be the next model for food service. Since COVID, it’s the most obvious choice. Full service will never go away, but QSR makes the most sense right now.” Garcia made a series of trips to Mexico between 2017 and 2021 that shaped what Trompudo’s has become. He went to Mexico City to try the openair taquerias with multiple trompos. (“I still can’t replicate what they’re doing down there, but I’m trying,” he said.) He took a course on chiles in

Lupe Garcia is Southside OKC’s next gen operator.

It’s still a very rare kind of restaurant in OKC — a southside taqueria with a full bar — and it’s also one of the very few places in the city that carves “al pastor” (grilled or roasted pork) straight from a “trompo” or spit. Gunajuato, and ate al pastor tacos for days with his girlfriend in Playa del Carmen. A trip to Vegas introduced him to Tacos el Gordo, where they craft salsas to go with each taco. Garcia loved the approach, and he’s incorporated it at Trompudo’s. Suadero, the other house specialty besides al pastor, came from a trip to Mexico City. “Suadero was everywhere down there, and so I asked about it, and the moment I tried it, I knew I’d use it here.” The problem was getting a local supplier, but Garcia found a specialty supplier that can guarantee a steady supply. That development will be important for the future, because like Garcia, once people taste the suadero tacos, they get hooked.

The cut comes from a portion of the cow between the belly and leg on either side of the udders. It’s a very fine cut with a silky smooth mouthfeel and intense beef flavor, like cheek without the oiliness. It’s so difficult to get regularly that many taquerias will substitute brisket, but the flavor and texture are not the same. The menu also includes carne asada, carnitas, and spicy house-made chorizo. All the meats can be ordered on tacos, burritos, mulitas, quesadillas and tortas. The salsas are designed to be paired with specific meats, but feel free to improvise. As for the name, Garcia — a reader and a nerd — tells the story of Ray Kroc, the famous founder

of McDonald’s, who told his team, “I need a name. It’s the most important thing.” Garcia wanted to avoid what he calls the standard taqueria name: someone’s first name plus “tacos.” “Everywhere I go, I find a Lupe’s Tacos,” he said. “My girlfriend even found one in Puerto Rico. Since the trompo is my focus here, I used a play on words with Trompudo. It’s a person with big lips. People ask me every day, ‘Where is Trompudo?’ We laugh.” You won’t find Trompudo in Trompudo’s Tacos, but you will find the city’s best tacos, paired with some of the best salsas you’ve ever had. And be sure to try the Mango-Chamoy Margarita. 405MAGAZINE.COM

We Say Ceviche A zesty bite of summer by the sea BY G R E G H O R T O N

AT F I R ST GL A NC E , C E V IC H E looks like someone forgot to add a binding agent like mayo to a seafood salad. Big chunks of white fish, shrimp or both, finely diced peppers, tomatoes and onions, slices of avocado and, depending on the style, fresh or roasted corn — all tossed together as if someone dropped the mise en place. Scoop it up with a tortilla chip, though, and a refreshing burst of citrus combines with the seafood and veggies to create a briny, zippy bite of summer by the sea. Ceviche is traditionally attributed to Peruvian cooks, which makes sense, given that the country has 1,500 miles of coastline, making fresh seafood a year-round staple. There are reasons to be suspicious of the dish’s standard origin story, though, including similar dishes in North Africa and the Polynesian Islands. However, it’s entirely possible that a dish featuring citruscured fish might emerge in more than one location situated along a large body of salt water. In terms of its presence on American menus, it’s fairly ubiquitous in Mexican and Tex-Mex concepts, and frequently appears on so-called “modern American” style concepts. In fact, the newly reopened Eatery and Cocktail Offices at The Union — or The Union for brevity — at 616 NW 5th St. in OKC features a pretty straightforward traditional dish but for two tweaks: castelvetrano olives and wonton chips. 88

JUNE 2022

Azteca Mexican Grill keeps the fish chunky for maximum flavor.

“We use wonton chips with other dishes, so we thought we’d see how they held up to ceviche,” said operating partner J. Mays. “The flavor adds something to each bite, and they are hefty enough to scoop any amount. The castelvetrano olives add just a little more brininess to the dish, bringing it closer to a fresh seafood flavor.” The choice of castelvetranos is important, as their taste is similar to salted butter with a twist of herbaceousness. Other olives would simply overpower the dish, and the wonton chips do add a unique texture to the bite. Azteca Mexican Grill (4024 N. May Ave., OKC) adopts a more traditional approach, with tilapia, shrimp, avocado and lime juice as the main components. Lime juice is used to denature the fish — shrimp should be fully cooked before serving for safety — a process that changes the

properties of a food product. Essentially, citrus acid alters the molecular structure of the food to make it palatable and/or safe to eat. “We like to use big chunks of seafood in our ceviche,” said operating partner Alejandrina Camarena. “Cut it too small, and you don’t get delicious bites full of seafood flavor.” If you want to check out a more Peruvian approach, Naylamp (2106 SW 44th St., OKC) goes traditional with aji peppers and lemon juice. You can get ceviche pescado with just white fish, or ask for the mixto, which includes calamari, mussels and shrimp. Mamaveca (2551 Hemphill Dr., Norman) also skews traditional with sweet potatoes, roasted corn and aji peppers, as does Zambrano’s (308 W. Edmond Rd., Edmond) with the delicious addition of “maiz mote” — basically hominy corn nuts without the tooth-shattering characteristic of our childhood snack. Big Truck Tacos (530 NW 23rd St., OKC) uses a twist on the traditional style with the addition of fresh corn, and it sticks to a more Mexican approach with lime juice. The presence of plump shrimp and no fish makes it tempting to stir in a little of your favorite red sauce or something spicier to make a mashup of shrimp cocktail and ceviche. Food is supposed to evolve, after all.

Increased options come with increased choice paralysis as consumers try to make sense of labels, varietals, color variations and regions. 90

JUNE 2022

For the summer months, rosé makes an excellent choice because it keeps some of the character of a red wine — especially in terms of dryness and tannins — in a chillable, quaffable alternative to heavy California, French and Italian reds. We’ve compiled a list of some excellent, affordable options in some of your favorite red (and red-ish) varietal categories. The list is French-heavy because while Greece originated the concept, France perfected the

D R I N K

art of making rosé and continues to offer the best wines available. Chateau Thivin Beaujolais. The best word to describe this Gamay rosé is lovely. It’s heavy on fruit and long on balance, so it’s easy to drink and easy to love. Domaine de Fonsainte Gris de Gris. This Corbieres winery also makes one of the best reds to introduce people to French wines, and the rosé is equally approachable. Year to year, it remains one of the most popular choices thanks to its juicy fruit profile. Domaine de Pallus Messanges. This Loire Valley rosé of Cabernet Franc is the most bracing on the list, with all the grippiness of the varietal mixed with tons of floral notes and zippy acidity. Peyrassol Cuvee des Commandeurs. The Provence rosés are usually instantly recognizable due to their pale pink color. They tend to be lighter with less obvious fruit, but they’re also easy to enjoy. The Peyrassol is right down the middle of Provence style with a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. Château de Trinquevedel. If there is such a thing as an OG in the rosé category, this is that wine, at least by Oklahoma standards in that it was one of the first bottles in the state. It comes from the Tavel region, famous for producing only rosé wines, and this one is a Grenache-heavy blend of five varietals. Lorenza Rosé. Produced by a mother-daughter team, Lorenza bears a California appellation, but the grapes are sourced from excellent old vines from well-known vineyards. The wine itself is Mourvedre dominant, but has three other Rhone varietals, including Carignan to add juiciness. Scarpetta Frico. Sangiovese makes a light, drinkable rosé, and its character is obvious in this very affordable, light wine produced by the chef-sommelier team of Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson and Bobby Stuckey (M.S.). Wine shops that carry a good French rosé selection aren’t common, but Edmond Wine Shop, Coffee Creek Wine Shop, Freeman’s Liquor Mart, George’s and Spirit Shop in Norman all carry a good selection, or you can have your favorite wine shop order for you.

AT I T S C ONC E P T UA L C OR E , C U R RY IS GR AV Y, which means it fits right into Oklahoma’s culinary landscape. (Just imagine it with biscuits.) The curries available in the 405 tend to fall into three broad categories based on region: the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. Each style uses different blends of spices, and proper Indian curry takes the longest to prepare, lending it a silkier, more rounded texture and flavor profile. Caribbean and Thai curries rely on fresh peppers rather than powders, and Thai especially leans on coconut milk for its most popular varieties. Finding them around the metro is easy, with Thai and Indian joints being the most common, but they all tend to be delicious. Here are 10 Curries You Need to Try Now.

Carican Flavors 2701 N. Martin Luther King Blvd., OKC This Caribbean spot is the best place in OKC to get Caribbeanstyle curried goat. Yes, goat, the most consumed animal protein in the world, which is flavorful without being gamey or pungent. Chick N Beer 715 NW 23rd St., OKC You can get wings with two different curries at this Uptown 23rd wing destination. The red curry is a mashup with a honey barbecue twist, and the yellow curry is a straightforward curry blend with a touch of sweetness. Four J’s 2920 S. Agnew, OKC The Southwest side, takeoutonly concept was OKC’s first Lao restaurant, and it also offers Thai cuisine. The massaman curry is a mild Thai-style dish, with a lovely balance of tangy and savory notes.

Still Using Chain Pharmacies?

Mt. Everest Cuisine 1169 E. 2nd St., Edmond This Edmond spot also offers curried goat, but in a Nepalese style. Spice levels are relatively low, so it functions as a great introduction to this popular dish. Panang Thai Restaurant As the name suggests, the panang curry is excellent, and with four locations — including Moore — it’s convenient all over the metro. Panang is a relatively mild curry featuring basil, coconut milk and bright, green veggie flavors. Sheesh Mahal 4621 N. May Ave., OKC While it’s technically Pakistani food, the place is known as an Indian food destination; the cuisines are very similar. The green chicken masala is made with Sheesh Mahal’s own masala blend, with cilantro and garlic to make a rich, savory dish.

Goro Ramen 3000 Paseo, OKC Mazemen is a brothless noodle dish common in Japanese cuisine, and Goro prepares its with a housemade curry and confit chicken for a savory, mild dish that relies on pickled ginger to lighten it up.

Tandoor 1901 E Reno Ave., OKC Popularly known as “truck stop Indian food,” this east side restaurant is tucked into a truck stop at Reno and MLK — but it also produces some of the city’s best curry dishes. Start with the chicken curry, and when they ask what heat level, know that the higher numbers should be approached judiciously.

Ma Der Lao Kitchen 1634 N. Blackwelder Ave., OKC Every Tuesday, Chef Jeff Chanchaleune offers Khao Poon, a red curry coconut chicken soup that is intensely flavorful. For heat heads, he offers a chili crisp to amp up the Scoville rating.

Thai House 500 NW 23rd St., OKC You’ll find tod mun pla (Thai fish cakes) on the appetizer section of this Uptown 23rd restaurant. The fish flavor is very mild, and it’s rounded out and made more earthy by the red curry paste at the heart of the spice blend.

FLORENCE’S DELECTABLE LEGACY The dedication and drive behind an award-winning OKC classic This spring, Cadillac sent 405 senior writer Greg Horton and blogger/influencer Sarah James on a culinary adventure around Oklahoma City to talk to chefs about their food, inspiration and hospitality. Florence Jones opened her eastside restaurant in 1952, and 70 years later, she’s still in the kitchen. The recipient of a James Beard American Classics Award in 2022, the restaurant has been serving soul and Southern food in one of Oklahoma City’s historically Black neighborhoods from the beginning. Florence calls it country cooking; it’s the style she grew up with in Boley, Oklahoma, and all the recipes either came from her family or were developed by her along the way: yam fried chicken, turkey neck bones, fried ribs, pear pie, etc. Her daughter Victoria Kemp, who interviewed her mother for part of this segment, is now the operating partner, having joined her mom more than a decade ago to help keep the tradition alive.

Florence Jones with daughter Victoria Kemp

Kemp: Now that you’re a James Beard Award winner, something I know you never expected, talk about what you thought would happen with the restaurant when you opened it. J O N E S : I thought I could make it two weeks. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to make it because I was a country girl, and I was very quiet. I had to learn to talk over people; it’s why I talk loud now. My mom knew some people, friends with a print shop up the street, and he came down to see me, and he said, “I hear you opened this place with two chickens and a prayer.” But I learned to talk, and I had more than two chickens.

open, all my wonderful customers came to see me, but the chairs hadn’t arrived yet, so no one had a place to sit.

Kemp: You had to relocate after ten years because of urban renewal. What did you think would happen when you had to move in 1962? J O N E S : I didn’t think my customers would follow me. Families didn’t have two cars back then, and I was worried they wouldn’t make the drive from 4th St. to 23rd. But I ordered tables and chairs and an ice maker just in case, and the second day I was

Kemp: Your daughter arrives from Dallas with all her big dreams and plans, how did you react? J O N E S : You remember. I was telling you, “You’re spending too much money. You can’t do this and you can’t do that,” but you did all of it, and I give you credit for it. And now I’m gonna let you take it from here, because you did everything you said you’d do, and I can’t imagine it going farther.

Kemp: In 1969, the height of the Civil Rights Movement, you’re a woman business owner on the east side, Clara Luper, your friend at church, is raising hell and getting things done. Were you worried that you wouldn’t make it? J O N E S : I wasn’t worried by then. I’d been through so much, and done so much – I went to work at 6:00 a.m. and worked ‘til midnight, because I knew I was going to make it.

technology continue to improve the options for patients with chronic pain. Spinal cord stimulation is a therapy that has made significant recent advancements and offers patients with pain control in a less invasive way than ever before. Patients who have been suffering due to neck pain, back pain, neuropathy (nerve pain), or pain that persists after surgery may feel like they have tried everything and not improved their quality of life. These patients may benefit from a minimally invasive procedure to place a medical device called a spinal cord stimulator (SCS). SCS changes the way pain signals are carried along the spinal cord to the brain, preventing the constant flow of pain communication. Unlike almost any other medical procedure, SCS can be tried out before deciding to proceed with the permanent device. The trial is often able to be completed in the outpatient office, whereas the permanent device is placed in an outpatient surgical facility. If you are interested in learning about this option as well as other minimally invasive solutions for painful problems, please contact the office of Dr. Morgan Pollard.

Lyric’s Summer Spectaculars A trio of theatrical crowd pleasers BY L AV I N I A C R E S WA

FOR OK L A HOM A T H E AT R EGOERS, T H E musicals presented by Lyric Theatre at the Civic Center are a staple of summer entertainment. Lyric is known for bringing in national talent, as well as local actors, singers and dancers to create Broadway-worthy productions. This summer, Lyric is delivering three shows that should not be missed. As always, this summer’s shows include a family favorite, a great American musical and a director’s choice. A lot has changed in the theatre world over the last two years, and producing artistic director Michael Baron was proud to note that Lyric has always been ahead of the curve. “We’ve always cast in diverse ways, we’ve always hired diverse 102

design teams,” he said. “Since COVID, many performers have moved back to Oklahoma. I’ve been able to hire a lot more people and invest in a lot of local actors of diversity. I want for these performers to be able to express who they are and their culture in the role, even if it’s a classic show.” Roald Dahl’s Matilda, presented by Express Employment Professionals, takes the stage first, June 21-26, and is appropriate for all ages. With British humor, an interesting, pop-sounding score and over-the-top characters, Baron said, “You would think Matilda is geared towards kids, but it’s actually a very entertaining show for every age.” The story follows Matilda, a gifted young girl (in several ways), navigating life at a boarding school with her fellow students. This will be the first professional production of Matilda in Oklahoma City. Continental Resources’ great American musical is Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel, happening July 5-10. This show features a huge cast, with both a dancing and singing chorus

and 25-piece orchestra on stage. Though Carousel is a darker show, Baron said, “It really is about second chances. Even though they’re all struggling, the characters come together to show the importance of family.” This production is appropriate for anyone who loves theatre, but it may raise questions on marriage and relationships. Kinky Boots is finishing up the summer musicals July 19-24 and will be a blast for ages 12+. Written by the hilarious Harvey Fierstein and featuring original music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, this Tony-winning show is sure to have the audience on their feet, wishing they had those thigh-high boots for themselves. Baron is excited to be heading back to the Civic Center after a two-year hiatus. “It’s the first time

A League of Our Own OKC welcomes professional women’s softball BY A D DA M M . F R A N C I S CO

W HEN THINKING ABOUT SOFTBALL, you think of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. While the rest of the country seems to be catching on to the tantalizing fast-paced sport, OKC has been on that train and serves as the sport’s capital. With that knowledge, it makes even more sense that the Women’s Professional Softball League’s (WPF) birthplace is in Oklahoma City. The league, launching this month, will provide a longer-lasting and legitimate option for softball players who are looking to continue playing softball after college. Lauren Chamberlain is a former infielder for the University of Oklahoma who went on to play professionally. Chamberlain has become a very familiar figure in the sport, especially around this state. Capitalizing on her popularity and softball expertise, Chamberlain was named the league’s commissioner. “I am deeply humbled and incredibly excited for my role as Commissioner of WPF,” Chamberlain said. “I have worked hard to build a good standing with existing softball athletes, people of influence in our sport and those outside of our sport. I am confident that I can bridge the gap between all parties and create an exceptional professional level of softball, one that our sport and its athletes deserve.” WPF was formed by three notable big names in softball: USA Softball, USSSA and Smash It Sports. The collaboration of these three entities, especially USSSA and USA Softball, is notable, sending a message of unity and progression in women’s sports, which will aid in shaping the future of professional softball. “The opportunity to venture back into a women’s professional league has been at the forefront of our mission within USSSA and, more 104

specifically, the USSSA Pride,” said Donny DeDonatis III, CEO of USSSA. “We are both ecstatic and humbled to be a major role player in WPF’s development and creation.” Rick Schiffhauer is the President of Smash It Sports (one of the founding entities) and is a boisterous fan of the sport himself. With his organization capturing success in slow-pitch softball, Schiffhauer is excited to take a stab at fastpitch. “When I founded Smash It Sports, one of our core values was to look for avenues to advance women in diamond sports,” said Schiffhauer. “I want my daughters and other girls to have the same dreams and aspirations as the boys. We need to close this disparity between baseball and softball.”

WPF’s inaugural season will begin this month and will end on Aug. 6. The overall goal of this league and the decision for the dates were largely based on giving athletes more opportunities to play. WPF is also committed to its athletes making a legitimate living playing the sport. And while the teams will play nationwide, WPF’s headquarters are in OKC — which will be great for the city’s notoriety, as well as the sport, considering OKC is the home of the NCAA Women’s College World Series and the outright capital of the sport itself. “Oklahoma City is unquestionably the world capital of softball, so of course it makes sense that this would be the headquarters of the WPF,” said Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. “We value being the host of this new endeavor, we’re excited for what that will mean in the years ahead and we’re grateful to Commissioner Lauren Chamberlain and the WPF for choosing us. We look forward to watching the story of the league unfold.” “It is time for the show to continue past the WCWS,” said Chamberlain. “Y’all are going to need more popcorn.”

ArtFusion Studio owners Rick and Tracey Bewley

True Fusion Artists Rick and Tracey Bewley have followed their muse in glass that’s fused

and studio. Their recent work is a combination of fused glass techniques and other materials that represents a fusion of their talents, the couple said, including Tracey’s sense of design and Rick’s extensive experience creating with heavier materials. Here the Bewleys talk about how they met, what they make and who they are as artists. This conversation has been edited for clarity and for space.

S T E P I N T O R IC K A N D T R AC E Y Bewley’s ArtFusion Studio in Oklahoma City, and you’ll find a magical mix of art and light in colorful works that start with fused glass. The Bewleys have been creating their mixed media magic since they started their business in 2003. Today, their HQ and studio is at NW 11th St. and Western Avenue; they work downstairs and live upstairs in a home they renovated and finished out themselves. While known for glass, The Bewleys are mixed-media artists that often use other materials to ground their glasswork. Their creations range from large-scale public art projects to commissioned work to smaller pieces that people can buy from them at festivals or their gallery 106

JUNE 2022

Tell me about your business and what you do. R ICK BE WLEY: So we are primarily fused glass artists. Our business consists of art for the sake of art, whether for festivals, our gallery, public or commissioned work. The weirder, the better. And then we do public art; it’s fun seeing your work in public. T R ACEY BE WLEY: Glass is our favorite medium or what we’re known for, but we frequently mix that with other materials. Steel, wood and acrylic are all other mediums we work with, as well.

What is fused glass? T R ACEY: Fused glass is a matter of cutting and working the glass while it’s cold, kind of like stained glass. You cut and break and lay it all on a flat pattern or design. Once the design is the way you like it, a stained glass artist would solder it together at this point with a metal framework to

hold the pieces together. What we do instead is take our design and put it in a kiln and melt all those pieces together. Every piece we work with starts as a flat panel that has been melted together. Obviously, not all of our pieces are flat. That just means everything that has any shape or form to it has been in the kiln at least two times — the first time to melt the components together, and the second time we put on top of a mold and cook it again. The different types of work we do are all at this point variations on the fused glass process. Kiln cast glass is the other type of glass work that we like to play with. Basically, the difference is that instead of just putting a couple of layers of glass in the kiln and melting it, coming back later and doing something else with it, we put a mold or dam up around it so that it’s thicker when it melts and it doesn’t spread out. It contains the shape or form that that we’re trying for. From there, we do what’s called cold-working, which is when you grind and polish or tile saw to work the glass when it isn’t hot. We never took any classes that involve these processes. Most of this is through Rick’s knowledge and experience with working with tools and equipment — R ICK: Granite and marble and other things. It’s a great example of our complementary skills, you know, her design sense and colors. And then viability to understand that if we make it thicker, I know how to work it once we get there. And then playing off of each other. T R ACEY: Right now, I’m trying to get all these pieces ready for the Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts. I’ve been making glass pieces, and he’s figuring out how to make them into a sculpture that makes it a finished piece.

I N

How did you meet? RICK: We both worked together at MTM [custom

trophy and award supplier MTM Recognition in OKC]. Tracey was head of design, and I’m vice president of research and development and have been there 33 years, 34 in June. We both had creative jobs and interacted with each other creatively. T R ACEY: I worked there for 22 years and I retired four years ago this August. When we met, I was more of a fine artist person. I did graphic design. I had a degree from school for painting and drawing and more traditional kind of stuff. But he always made things. He’s always been hands-on — building furniture, making gifts for people, working on acrylic or wood or whatever he may get his hands on. He was always a builder.

When we met, we wanted to find a medium that we could both learn fresh and learn together, so that neither one of us had a leg up on the other one. Through work, we heard about fused glass from a man in Minnesota, so we went there to take his three-day class to learn the basics. We loved it. We also took him a new fused glass project requested by a customer of MTM. That was a weird coincidence, since we hadn’t heard of fused glass before. After our class, he told us he didn’t want to take on this difficult MTM project that involved about 150 pieces of glass. So we did. We thought we were experts with our three-day class. That’s what started everything. We had to buy a kiln and tools and supplies. Halfway through the job, we realized we might not get done in time, so we had to ramp up production around the clock. That was the start of it. We started making stuff. We were working out of my parents’ real estate office and set up a gallery, but there were no customers. R ICK:

CO N VO

W I T H

T R ACEY: We had no plan for selling it. We were just stacking it up and making more. R ICK : We entered the Oklahoma City Community College arts festival. Tracey is a graduate of OCCC and a Hall of Fame member. We entered for many years.

When did you buy the current building where ArtFusion studio is and that now includes the glass-blowing Blue Sage Studios? RICK: We bought this place in 2007. T R ACEY: There was no Plaza District, Midtown. This was a barren area. Lots of empty buildings around us. The bar next to us.

EYES ON ART You can see the Bewleys’ work in large public art projects that include Slam Dunk, a shadow sculpture at Red Andrews Park; Learn, Grow, Reflect sculptures at Wilson Elementary School; fused glass and steel-layered wall pieces at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital; “Leipzig” at Southern Nazarene University’s Science Building; the “In the Wind” sculpture on the corner of Main and Porter in Norman; and in a ceiling sculpture at the McClendon Whitewater Center, among other places. Soon, you’ll also be able to see their work in the newly renovated Civic Center Music Hall as well. The City of Oklahoma City Arts Commission in April approved their proposal to create two large light sculptures (72” tall and 116” x 84” wide) that will hang from the Civic Center lobby once its Art Deco-style renovations are complete. Also, you’ll also soon see the Bewleys’ sculpture in the Metro Park neighborhood in the median along Linwood Blvd., and 13 giant butterflies with four-foot wingspans hanging from poles in two Capitol View neighborhoods.

R ICK : It’s classic, but not unique to us. Worldwide, artists need a nice big space cheap, so you have to buy in a sketchy neighborhood — and then pretty soon it’s the cool neighborhood because all the artists live there.

What is your favorite part about the art you do? R ICK: One thing is that it’s unique. We like that it’s got a lot of color. We’re able to exploit all of the bright colors that that are available. T R ACEY: I also really like that aspect of it that we’re still learning new techniques or new processes or trying different things. We haven’t run out yet of new ways that we can manipulate glass, and that’s been a lot of fun. R ICK: Whether people like art or not, everybody likes glass — transparency, the reflections, the color, all of that appeals to everybody,

A True Pre-Oklahoma Hero Tough and authentic, legendary U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves helped tame lawlessness in Indian Territory

Bass Reeves, a U.S. marshal from 1875 to 1907, served the Court of the Western District of Arkansas that included Indian Territory.

108

JUNE 2022

I N T H E 2 4 0 -Y E A R H IS T ORY of the U.S. Marshals Service, a little over 200 federal marshals, deputy marshals, special deputy marshals and marshals guards have been killed in the line of duty. In Indian Territory alone, 120 were killed. While many federal peace officers made a name for themselves in Indian Territory, few, if any, were as suited to the job as Bass Reeves. Far more violent than other notorious Old West locales such as Tombstone, Deadwood or Dodge City, Indian Territory — the eastern half of modern-day Oklahoma and home to the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole nations — presented a special challenge for law enforcement. It was a haven for infamous outlaws and petty criminals alike. Its 75,000 square miles fell under the jurisdiction of the U.S. court for Western Arkansas at Fort Smith, the largest federal court in U.S. history. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant tapped Isaac C. Parker, a congressman from Missouri who became known as the “hanging judge,” to oversee the court and establish a tighter rule of law. One of his first actions was to appoint former slave Bass Reeves as a U.S. Marshal. He is believed to be the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Originally from Texas, Reeves crossed the border into Indian Territory to escape slavery. He became acquainted with the Cherokee, Creek and Seminole, according to Oklahoma Historical Society records. After the Civil War, he left Indian Territory for Arkansas where he farmed and occasionally accompanied marshals into Indian Territory as a scout. Reeves was known as an expert with a pistol and rifle, stood about six foot,

two inches, weighed 180 pounds and was said to have superhuman strength, wrote historian Arthur T. Burton in his book Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. He was known for his ability to catch outlaws that other deputies couldn’t, often wearing a disguise and using advanced detective techniques, Burton wrote. And while he shot and killed 15 to 20 men in self-defense and survived numerous assassination attempts, Reeves was never wounded — even though his hat and his belt were shot off on separate occasions. In his 32 years as a marshal, he detained and transported back to Fort Smith more than 3,000 men and women for whom he had received a writ of arrest. When Reeves received a writ for the capture of notorious outlaw Belle Starr, she turned herself in before he could arrest her. It was the one and only time she willingly presented herself to law enforcement. Reeves ser ved the Western District of Arkansas until 1907 when Oklahoma became a state. At 68, he left Fort Smith for Muskogee, where he joined the police force. He died in 1910 of nephritis. Reeves was married, widowed and remarried; he had 11 children. One of his descendants, his great nephew Paul L. Brady, became the first Black man appointed as a federal administrative law judge in 1972. He also is the great-great-great grandfather to National Hockey League player Ryan Reaves.

Cleats for Kids has provided equipment to over 180,00 children athletes.

Cleats for Kids celebrates 10 years BY J A K E D U R H A M

EQUALITY IN EDUCATION IS NOT A GUAR ANT E E . All too often, schools lack funding to support programs such as music, the arts or sports. Programs like sports require active student participation, which is shown to have numerous benefits: promoting healthier lifestyles, learning teamwork, setting goals, enhancing skills, improving coordination, learning the value of discipline — and most importantly, having fun. Sadly, a school’s or student’s geographical location may directly affect the financial ability needed to provide or participate in these essential outlets. Oklahoma ranks among the top eight states with a large number of school districts: more than 540. Approximately one in four Oklahoma families lives in poverty, and some students will inevitably be left behind due to a lack of financial resources. However, this should never play a role in determining a child’s ability to better themselves and rise to greatness. Coach Mark and Stacy McDaniel noticed that some student participation was short-lived or non-existent due to a lack of 110

financial means for equipment and gear. In some instances, students outgrew items, and their families did not have the disposable income to replace them. In 2011, the McDaniels founded Cleats for Kids (C4K), whose sole purpose was to provide kids in Oklahoma with the equipment necessary to participate in a variety of sporting activities. Kids need more than a primary education to succeed, and they require a life full of productivity, as well as ways to promote health, social development, cooperation and critical thought. To ensure this, Cleats for Kids’ mission has been to provide shoes and equipment to those in need so that each child can be afforded the same opportunities as everyone else. Since its inception, Cleats for Kids has provided over 180,000 items to kids in need, which helped over 40,000 in 2020. Currently, 225 school districts participate in the program. On April 30, Cleats for Kids celebrated its 10th anniversary with the Gamechangers Tailgate event. “The $200 ticket includes $100 worth of goods and services. The rest of the funds raised will support our mission of empowering kids through sports,” said Taylor Self, director of communications and donor relations.

“Everything C4K does is done with kids in mind,” Self said. “When it comes to fundraisers and events, we try to find unique and creative ways to incorporate kids into the program to illustrate our mission. The Gamechangers Tailgate is no different.” Attendees experienced an array of festivities, including live music from The Wavetones, dancing, stories and U.S. Olympian Bart Conner acting as the event emcee. Attendees were also able to donate to the C4K Booster Club, where 100% of the proceeds go directly to programs intended to equip and empower kids. “One of our favorite parts of being a part of the incredible 405 community is the collaboration that occurs everywhere you look,” Self said. Organizations, businesses, individuals, agencies and more all find ways to work together and make the community stronger.” To learn more about Cleats for Kids, to contribute or to volunteer, visit okc.cleatsforkids.org.
