FROM THE EDITORS IN THE FIELD OF PUBLISHING we have to stay a step ahead. For example, it’s never ACTUALLY spring when we’re sending the spring issue to press. And as difficult as it is to live with a foot in two worlds, it’s a necessary evil that comes with a few fringe benefits. Thinking about the coming season when the trees are still bare can jump-start the desire to do a little deep cleaning and organizing, to initiate some window shopping for new outdoor furniture or even spur the sowing of a few seeds in eager anticipation of summer’s bounty.

Oklahoma’s fickle weather can also usher in a surprise late-season snow storm, so even though you might be turning these pages in search of ideas for spring and summer ... the warmer days may simply not be here (yet). But soon they will be. And there’s nothing like a new season to inspire new décor.

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN HIDING UNDER A ROCK, you’ve heard about the painted furniture revolution. What? No? Well, allow me to share. Living rooms across America are becoming host to a phenomenon that allows a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive makeover of wooden pieces in need of a tune-up. There are several paint products that accomplish this amazing feat, each with distinguishing characteristics, but the common denominator is the use of ingredients that create no/low-odor, no-VOC paints that can be used indoors, in all weather, with quick drying and no special prep necessary.

In my opinion, therein lies the secret to the success of these paints: no special prep. If you have ever attempted a painting or refinishing project, you know that prep work takes up easily half of the time and the effort necessary for a good, long-lasting result. Scrimp on prep and you will pay later. The most amazing part of testing these three brands was that the effort to get started was extremely minimal. From the idea of “hey, I am thinking about painting something” to actually applying paint, the time investment is about five minutes or less. And that makes getting over the hump of “thinking about doing” to actually “doing” a really easy transition. Put down some cardboard, drag your furniture piece onto it, and get ready to create. Viva la revolution!

Some colors might need only a single coat for full coverage, and even though the quarts seem small they will last through many projects. The finish on all tested paints was very matte … almost chalky to the touch. Apply either a clear or antique/dark wax or oil to provide a durable finish and shine.

Local retailers of these paints often offer classes to teach novices the techniques and tricks of the trade, or if you are more free-spirited, grab a brush and dive in!

CeCe Caldwell’s Paints This ready-mixed, all-nat-

ural, water-based paint contains a blend of clay, porcelain clay and chalk. Designed to be especially earth-friendly, the combination of minerals within the product is supposed to create subtle shading in the paint surface with depth and dimension – this wasn’t especially obvious to my coke-bottle contact lens-wearing eyes, but that’s not to say it wasn’t there. I imagine it would be more evident on a larger sample. The cans are made from recycled plastic, and the labels are printed on recycled paper. Even the finishing wax is from plant and insect sources rather than chemical. This is definitely promoted as the “green” option for anyone who is tackling a paint makeover. In 36 colors, this eco-paint is self-priming and quick-drying, and can be found at local retailers through its website at cececaldwells.com.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint This water-based product is ready to go out of the can, and no prep is needed

– just paint! Annie Sloan is the author of over 23 books on painting techniques, with a new book set to be released in spring, and encourages you to channel your artistic side when creating your pieces. There are 32 paint colors that can be mixed together to create many more, and the addition of some of the techniques described in the books and website makes for nearly infinite creations. The paint can be thinned with water for a limewash effect or allowed to thicken in the air to create an impasto. The Chalk Paint name comes from the paint’s finish rather than its ingredient list, and it dries so quickly that even more advanced techniques like duotone, distressing or crackling are possible even in a short session. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint This paint had

the slowest start-up time as it comes in a powder form that must be mixed with water for 3-5 minutes before use. Don’t let that stop you – I spent almost as much time searching for my paint can opener in the black hole that is my garage as I did mixing this paint in a Mason jar. Watch the online tutorials for tips to get the perfect consistency. On raw wood, this soaked in like a beautiful limewash. Over painted or varnished surfaces, it resists bonding in some areas to create a chippy, antique finish. Add Milk Paint Bonding Agent and do some prep (like de-greasing and sanding) and the highly adhesive result should stick to metal, glass, tiles and varnished or painted finishes, and will not chip or peel. The paint gets its name from the milk protein, limestone, clay and natural pigment ingredients and comes in 12 colors. Find local retailers and tips at missmustard seedsmilkpaint.com.

Artist’s Eye

THE TRADEMARKS OF A GOOD DESIGNER ARE AN IMPECCABLE EYE FOR COLOR, a sense of harmony and a clear vision for the project. The Rose Creek home of Mark and Traci Miller is in every way a reflection of flawless design. More notably, the home is the lovely collaboration between homebuilder Sheryl Willingham of Willco Homes and homeowner Traci, whose penchant for design suggests that the pharmaceutical sales rep by day has a very gifted alter ego.

Traci’s flair for appointing a beautiful space stems from having an art background. This gives her a reliable sense of composition that extends well beyond her unerring ability to blend classical pieces with the contemporary. “My design style is eclectic. I enjoy mixing the old with a few funkymodern pieces,” she says. “I take inspiration from everywhere, but I’m particularly drawn to color, of course.”

Pale, bluish-gray walls (in Sherwin-Williams “Aloof Gray”) create a continuous, serene backdrop for vibrant touches throughout the public spaces in the home. “I’m a huge Jonathan Adler fan – can you tell?” Traci asks, pointing out several brightly patterned pillows by the iconic designer in the living area, where antique and contemporary come together effortlessly atop a cheery, animal-print rug.

A frequent customer in antique stores and estate sales, Traci can spot a diamond-in-the-rough from outer space.

To help her bring new life to her numerous furniture finds, Traci keeps capable upholstery experts on speeddial. “They know me well at Truman’s,” she admits, praising the venerable upholstery company (Truman’s Fabric & Foam, OKC) for their ability to jump through – and then reupholster – many hoops for her over the years.

“I love to repurpose things,” she notes. “If I find something great, I can’t pass it up.” Examples of her soft spot for unusual finds can be found throughout the home – a collection of ceramic “head vases,” dating back to the 1940s and ’50s, and Murano glass pieces.

One of the most striking features of the Miller home is its expansive farmhouse-style kitchen, thoroughly appointed for serious cooking. “We cooked for the whole clan at Thanksgiving,” Traci says. “Mark’s family and my family were all here together – this kitchen was made for times like that.”

If you can screw together an IKEA piece, you can do this.

I can personally attest, nearly 20 years after my eighthgrade woodshop class, I still use my hand-made stepstool to reach the upper shelves in my kitchen whenever my husband isn’t conveniently nearby. THREE YEARS AGO, the charming features of this historical two-story Gatewood home drew Blair and Maggie Humphreys in. After their purchase, they sought to preserve those details during the renovation of their ‘new’ 1920s-era home.

Most homes of the age were equipped with tiny, utilitarian kitchens and some items, such as call buttons to ring the butler, suggest that the kitchen was an area reserved for staff. A still-functional elevator, running from the foyer to the master suite, ensured immediate service. The Humphreys have kept the elevator, but they don’t use it. “The elevator works,” Maggie notes, “But I’ve heard from other homeowners who have them that there are only a couple of people who can still service them if they break down, so we don’t want to chance it!”

Absent a kitchen staff and butler, the young parents of a toddler son (and come May, his baby brother) rely on their own resources for keeping a busy household fed. To do that, they took out several walls that divided the original kitchen into multiple compartments, such as a breakfast nook and a mudroom.

The configuration of appliances was adapted to a newer, much more spacious kitchen layout. A commercial-size Wolf double oven/range was a gift from Blair to Maggie, who attended culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in Boston. The backsplash behind the stove offers a subtle Moroccan vibe, echoed by a pair of pendant lights over the breakfast bar. “I didn’t want the kitchen to be all straight lines,” Maggie recalls.

Among the other features which the Humphreys believe to be original to the home are two beautiful doors with stained glass and lead work, one of which is the interior door of the vestibule entry; the other depicts a regal peacock with a gold eye and separates the main living from the adjacent sun room. “We think of these doors as art,” Maggie says.

The home’s consistent, pale butter yellow and gray color scheme brings an ethereal quality to the décor, which is accented in white woodwork with bright pops of color throughout. Several bathrooms retain their original (or early) tile work, which isn’t always a lucky thing. Fortunately for the Humphreys, it was. For the upstairs (boys’) bath, Maggie found wallpaper that complemented the turquoise blue tile.

As she nears her due date for the birth of their second son, Maggie is happy to have added a new, spacious laundry room to the downstairs, leaving her with just one more important project on her list: converting an upstairs guest bedroom to a nursery.

IF YOUR SENSE OF STYLE runs a little more towards visual feast and a little less to manual labor, then you know the team at Assouline will find a way to inspire your design choices. With “Domestic Art: Curated Interiors,” the editors of the magazine PaperCity bring together 37 Texas abodes that were featured in its pages from 2000-2008, and range in scope from spare to opulent.

A caution: this is not the type of book that is read in one sitting. Place this gem on your coffee table or nightstand and pick it up to page through just a few of the delectable photographs at a time.

Frankly, there is too much optical stimulation to be absorbed in one fell swoop, and the beauty on every page is best savored slowly. A few choice selections: Amis and Guillaume Garrigue’s Round House was designed by Oklahoma’s own Bruce Goff. Natural materials including stone, copper and wood are showcased throughout this unusual dwelling.

Curved walls made of Frankoma tiles?

Check. Round bed? Circular conversation pit arrayed around a circular fireplace?

Check and check. This amazing home is an ode to the extraordinary.

Lisa Pope and Greg Westerman’s home defies convention. Built upon a steel framing system three-and-a-half feet above the ground cantilevered over an earthquake fault, this flexible floorplan was designed to meet the changing needs of a new family. Versatile spaces, dubbed “sub-rooms” by Pope Westerman, challenge norms and test the limits of multi-function, including a kids’ art studio-cum-home office which is planned to transform into a library when the children are older. The red lacquer kitchen is not to be missed.

LUCKY SEVEN A rescued art deco treasure and a midcentury modern enthusiast roll a winning combination.

A COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE BROKER, JASON LITTLE is drawn to midcentury modern furnishings for the place he comes home to in an absorbed life of traveling for pleasure and business. Its centerpiece expression: a dark-blue Arne Jacobsen Egg chair commanding a corner view through wide casement windows.

He’s also a devotee of the art deco style of the principal structure of 7 at Crown Heights. The cluster of three stylistically unified but separate residential buildings is so named for five units resurrected from last year’s restoration of the 1936 construction and two new additions.

Art deco and its younger cousin, midcentury modern, share a theme of clean, repeatable lines. While machine-age art deco was often accompanied by ornamental decoration, the exterior of Jason’s building is free of it – as is midcentury modern.

Restorer and developer Brent Swift of Brent Swift Design • Build collaborated with architect Jeremy Gardner of Butzer Gardner Architects for the pre-occupancy interior finish of the restoration. They followed the lead of the building’s roots with modernist minimalism combined with durable black-walnut milled cabinetry.

“We wanted an overall kind of quiet interior where the materials can speak for themselves,” Jeremy said. “We didn’t have to try really hard to incorporate a lot of gestures.”

Jason added, “When I met with them initially and was kind of looking through the materials selection, this is what I would have picked for myself were I to customize it. It was nice not to have the headache of dealing with those decisions.”

Jason and interior designer Sara Kate both happen to enjoy a love of travel and an appreciation for the romanticism infused in vintage objects. Jason’s condominium is a fascinating articulation of both.

A black-and-white photo of the First National Center in Jason’s office holds personal significance for him: He brokered the sale to the OKC landmark’s current owner. His impressive amateur photography of his travels to locales such as Zurich, Barcelona and Portugal are blended with Sara Kate’s findings of travel-themed arcana.

Sara Kate, the designer behind Sara Kate Studios in OKC, and Jason, senior vice president, private capital group, for CB Richard Ellis|Oklahoma, were acquaintances through mutual friends. He had witnessed her extraordinary ability to find objects far from catalog commonality and wanted her to bring that talent to the design of the condo’s interior. She aimed to communicate his personal talents and passions, yet also divulge his professional life of numbers, architecture and real-estate brokering in a masculine way.

“There is kind of a graphic element – posters, maps and surveyor sticks – that kind of made sense,” she said.

Jason’s love of New York City is on display with a 1950s NYC street and subway map and Little’s photo of the Brooklyn Bridge above a Thrive Tyler sofa in Klein azure, flanked by midcentury chrome accordion lamps.

With plans for entertaining, the condo is wired with flush, ceiling-mounted 5.1 surround sound. “From the time I wake up to the time I go to bed there’s basically music playing throughout the house. That’s probably been my favorite single thing about it,” he says.

Jason’s personal style involves a lot of vintage touches. “I like pieces in little furnishings that have a story to tell, and that’s what Sara Kate is really amazing at – scouting those and styling it all together.” Black walnut shelving displays a 1920s art deco toy car, an industrial glove mold, a 1930s safety deposit box, a 1920s Kodak accordion camera, theater lamp bulbs from New York City and a bottle with gauge stopper. A 1950s globe orbits a Shakespeare book collection and a turn-of-the-century Belgian seltzer bottle. Sara Kate’s eye for vintage drew fans even while studying commercial interiors at the University of Oklahoma. “I had friends who would buy things out of my house,” Sara Kate recalls. “I’d say ‘It’s really not for sale,’ and they’d ask, ‘But would you?’”
