Beginning in 2012 with some reclaimed wood and a table built in a garage, Urban Farmhouse Designs quickly has grown into the 405’s go-to destination for furniture, lighting, home décor and more, all crafted from repurposed materials. Owners Cherami and Jason Thomas credit the success of the company, which rescues vintage wood from old railroad cars, barns and warehouses, to the yin and yang nature of their relationship.

“I come up with all these crazy designs, and Jason figures out how to make them,” Cherami Thomas says. “Plus, I think we’re unique, because you can stand in our showroom and see the work being done in our manufacturing area.”

There’s plenty of work to be seen, too, as Urban Farmhouse is expanding its operations into neighboring warehouses to offer custom designs, reclaimed lumber and one-of-a-kind, “farmhouse find” items. And the repurposing doesn’t stop there, as some of the company’s 38 employees were hired from local halfway houses.

“Ultimately, our focus is on reclaimed furniture made by reclaimed people,” Thomas says.

“It has been said that, ‘When it comes to history, beliefs and values, we turn our future on the lathe of the past,’” Hannah says. “If so, the Oklahoma History Center is Oklahoma’s workshop, where salient truths of the past beget potential solutions for our future.

“Its art, archives, exhibits and artifacts house a multi-cultural collective understanding of who we Oklahomans have been in the past,” he says.

“And through these, we are offered a clearer view of who we are today.”

The downtown area of Oklahoma City is undergoing an epic revitalization, and many new businesses have cropped up in response to the renewed focus on these areas. But there’s another aspect to this renaissance, and that’s the chance for well-established Oklahoma businesses to evolve along with the city’s landscape.

822 Broadway Salon, now located in Automobile Alley, originated as The Hair Store on 51st and Western, but the shop’s new digs are representative of more than a physical move.

In September 2013, while riding his bike, owner Carl Wayne Wester was rear-ended by a truck going 50 mph. After recovering from multiple broken bones and a concussion, he went back to work only to find out that the building had been sold … and he had six months to find a new home for his salon.

Relocating a business that’s been in the same place for 21 years is a daunting task, but Wester stepped up to the challenge, and his efforts were rewarded with a prime location in what has become one of the city’s hottest and fastest growing districts, Automobile Alley. After some serious renovation, 822 Broadway Salon opened in December 2015.

“Turning this building into my dream salon was the hardest thing I have ever done,” says Wester. An example of resilience and adaptability to innovative change that not only commends Wester’s individual spirit but serves as an allegory of the metro’s growth these past several years, 822 Broadway’s story is one that is inspiring, but wouldn’t be worth telling if it wasn’t also a testament to the staff’s talent as hair designers. After all, clients don’t patronize a business for decades and follow you across town unless you’re good at what you do.

“I love the energy of my salon and the excitement of Automobile Alley,” Wester says. “My stylists are like family to me, and some of my clients have been with me for up to 37 years – from all walks of life. Some of them have never had their hair cut by anyone but me.

While meeting an IT challenge might be a short-term solution, for Innov8tive, the long-term goal is to keep their customers competitive.

“In this day and age, everybody uses technology and, if your business falls behind the competition, you’ve got a problem,” Delacluyse says. “We want our customers to walk out and say, ‘They solved my problem!’”
