NEW HOPE FOR A NEW SEASON
N
ew blood, rising challengers and the farewell to a legendary rivalry are the key talking points for the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship. There’s the arrival of new faces into the main game, headlined by reigning Super2 Series champion Broc Feeney (pictured below) replacing the retiring seven-time champion Jamie Whincup at Triple Eight Race Engineering. We profile the teenage sensation ahead of his full-time debut, charting his rise from karting to the leading team in Supercars within the space of five years in an in-depth interview and feature in this edition. Joining Feeney on the 2022 grid is fellow Super2 Series champion Thomas Randle, who will race for Tickford Racing. There’s also new-look teams with ownership and name changes at Grove Racing and PremiAir Racing. While Triple Eight Race Engineering once again shape
up as a favourite with reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen, there’s a renewed challenge from Ford teams Dick Johnson Racing and Tickford Racing and the increasingly competitive Walkinshaw Andretti United and Erebus Motorsport. The latter two ended last season in red-hot form, and are looking to carry that speed into 2022. We give a rundown of the teams and drivers competing in Supercars in 2022 in this season guide edition, your must-have companion to the championship. It was a busy off-season with a number of driver changes and team restructures, so we provide a rundown of what’s new. There’s also circuit guides and an event format summary to keep you informed. With the calendar likely to change as the season gets underway, we recommend you also keep tabs on SupercarXtra.com.au for updates. The Holden Commodore will race for a final time in
2022. Ahead of the farewell to the Commodore, the final battle between Holden and Ford and the introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro under Gen3 in 2023, we provide a summary of the changes and what’s coming next year in our ‘Analysis’ section. Elsewhere, we look back on the decade-on anniversaries from Australian touring cars with a flashback to important events from 1962, 1972, 1982, 1992, 2002 and 2012. The print edition of this issue includes a pullout poster with the Supercars class of 2022 and Holden’s championship and Bathurst winners from 2021. NEW DAWN FOR SUPERCARS Supercars enters 2022 with new owners and a new leader, ahead of the introduction of the Gen3 rules in 2023.
T
he foundations for the future of Supercars have been established with a new ownership group taking charge of the championship, just in time for the next generation technical package that will see the Chevrolet Camaro take on the Ford Mustang. Racing Australia Consolidated Enterprises Ltd (RACE) is the new owner of Supercars entering 2022. It’s a consortium led by entrepreneur Barclay Nettlefold alongside the Australian Racing Group and investment firm Henslow. RACE owns 100 percent of the Supercars business, rather than the previous split that saw Archer Capital with a 65 percent
stake and the Supercars teams collectively holding the remaining 35 percent. The teams will have input in the running of the championship with representatives on the Supercars Commission, which will be led by five-time Supercars champion Mark Skaife, who has worked closely with the Nettlefold-led consortium since the sale process began. The commission will continue to make recommendations on sporting and technical matters to the Supercars Board, which will feature representatives from the ownership consortium such as John McMellan and Barry Rogers from the Australia
The past and the future. The Camaro and Mustang will do battle under the Gen3 regulations from 2023.

Racing Group, Stephen Macaw from Henslow and more. Supercars will be led by new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shane Howard, who replaces Sean Seamer in the role. Howard has worked with Supercars since 1997 and has been its long-serving Chief Operating Officer. He has also previously stepped up as the interim CEO and
was a founding member of the Supercars Commission. Before his promotion, he led Supercars’ event management and motorsport operations department. “I share the passion of our staff, teams, sponsors and key stakeholders who want to see the sport continue to grow,” said Howard. “I am excited about our future under the new ownership group and have full confidence in our

management team that is experienced in delivering world-class events for one of the top touring car categories in the world.” Howard will steer the championship in its final season under the current Gen2 rules, with the Gen3 Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang set to make their racing debuts in 2023. The Gen3 prototypes were launched at Bathurst in 2021, receiving a positive reaction from drivers, teams and fans with their closer ties to their road-going versions. “You saw the release of Gen3 at Bathurst… the hairs on my arms poke up when we start talking about it,” said Howard. “I am so excited about the Gen3 cars. It’s a beautifully-engineered race car, it reflects the showroom look, it allows us to open up to more manufacturers.” The introduction of Gen3 could also see the new ownership structure pursue international opportunities for Supercars. “Certainly one of the key areas that Shane is focusing on is the ability, under the new structure, to really explore the international marketplace again,” said Nettlefold.
“Owning the IP of Supercars is an integral part. We know we are the best international touring car competition, and we want it to be proven even more. Everything is open. We’ll certainly explore all options.” The Gen3 prototypes will appear at Repco Supercars Championship events throughout 2022 ahead of their debut in 2023. Visit SupercarXtra.com.au for the latest news on Supercars.

OPENING THE ‘GATES’ ON A NEW ERA AT GROVE RACING
G
ates has confirmed that they will increase their investment with Grove Racing as they embark on their first full season in the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship. Following a winning drive at the Mountain in 2021, the team at Grove Racing jumped at the chance to put Lee Holdsworth back in a full-time drive. That, coupled with the
knowledge that long-serving Triple Eight engineer David Cauchi will be joining the team mid-season, was more than enough reason for Gates to increase their support. “Our relationship with the team started when Andre Heimgartner joined the Kelly brothers back in 2018,” said Priscilla Robb, marketing manager of Gates in Australia and New Zealand. “Over the journey, we have watched

As we emerge from what have been two extremely challenging years in Australian motorsport, it’s inspiring to see companies like Gates increase their investment in Australian motorsport. ON DISPLAY

In addition to supporting Grove Racing’s efforts in the main game, they have also thrown their considerable weight behind the team’s efforts to secure the Dunlop Super2 Series and Porsche Carrera Cup championships. “Our extensive product range is heavily automotive and, as a result, we are committed to aligning our brand with a wide variety of motorsport categories,” Priscilla explained. “In addition to working with Stephen and the team at Grove Racing, we’re also excited to announce that we’ve secured the naming rights sponsorship of JKD

COMMODORE FAREWELL
The Commodore enters its 43rd and final Australian Touring Car Championship/ Supercars season in 2022, looking to bow out with an 18th championship win and to get the edge over its former arch rival, the Ford Falcon.
C
onfirmation of the introduction of the Gen3 regulations in 2023 means the Commodore will race for a final time in 2022. General Motors will be represented by the Chevrolet Camaro in Gen3, marking the end of the road for the Commodore. The Commodore debuted in 1980 and has notched up 17 drivers’ championship wins and 28 Bathurst 1000 victories over 42 years. Its current tally of 17 titles matches the mark set by the Ford Falcon, with its final championship win in its farewell season in 2018.
The Falcon scored its first championship win in 1973 and won its 17 championships over a 46-year period, while the Commodore could surpass that feat in 43 years. The Commodore is already ahead of the Falcon for wins in the Bathurst 500/1000, with 28 victories for the Commodore and 14 for the Falcon. Peter Brock gave the Commodore a winning debut with the Australian Touring Car Championship and Bathurst 1000 double in 1980. While it was the Commodore’s only title in the Group C years, Brock scored a further three Bathurst wins under the Group C
rules from 1982 to 1984. The Commodore was uncompetitive in the Group A years, failing to win a championship between 1985 and 1992, though there were three popular wins in the Bathurst 1000 for the privateer Chickadee-backed entry in 1986, another success for Brock in 1987 and the first win for the Holden Racing Team in 1990. The Commodore did battle against the Falcon in the V8 era from 1993, with the rise of the Holden Racing Team netting five consecutive championships between 1998 and 2002. There were also seven Bathurst 1000 wins in a row
for the Commodore between 1999 and 2005. Triple Eight Race Engineering’s switch from Ford to Holden in 2010 saw the Commodore gain the ascendency yet again. The Commodore has won seven championships and nine Bathurst 1000s since then. In the exclusive battle between the Commodore and Falcon from 1993 to 2012, the Commodore won 11 championships to the Falcon’s nine and 15 Bathurst 1000 victories to five. There are 16 ZB Commodores on the grid for the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship.
The Commodore scored its 28th Bathurst 1000 win in 2021 courtesy of Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth.

THE TEAMS
Eleven teams will field a total of 25 entries in the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship. Here’s a rundown of how they are shaping up for the season. TRIPLE EIGHT RACE ENGINEERING
monitored given the pressure of racing for the leading team.
The leading Holden team will defend its drivers’ and teams’ championship crowns with a big reset of the personnel in the garage. Jamie Whincup steps out of the driver’s seat and will be team principal, taking over from Roland Dane with a new ownership structure that sees the arrival of Tony Quinn. Shane van Gisbergen defends his title alongside reigning Super2 Series champion Broc Feeney, who is replacing Whincup. Andrew Edwards arrives from Brad Jones Racing to engineer van Gisbergen, while Martin Short also steps up alongside Feeney with 2021 engineers David Cauchi and Wes McDougall departing. Van Gisbergen will be the favourite for the 2022 championship considering his dominant form last season, which included a run of six wins to start the campaign. However, the staff changes mean there will be a period of adjustment for the Red Bull-backed team. Also, the progress of Feeney will be closely
DICK JOHNSON RACING
14
The Ford team was Triple Eight Race Engineering’s most consistent challenger in 2021, despite the departure of Team Penske and Scott McLaughlin. Anton De Pasquale settled into the team and by the second half of the season was a contender, winning the most races other than Shane van Gisbergen, while Will Davison was a regular on the podium. The team has continuity with engineering guru Ludo Lacroix once again working alongside De Pasquale for what looks set to be a championship challenge. While Dick Johnson Racing and Triple Eight have the added burden of developing the Gen3 Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro respectively for 2023, both teams appear well positioned to do battle for the crown in 2022.

TICKFORD RACING
The Ford team expands back up to four entries in 2022, after running just three entries plus a regular wildcard entry in 2021. The addition of an extra car allows the team to promote Castrol-backed Thomas Randle into the main game on a full-time basis, after regular wildcard and endurance appearances with the team for the 2020 Super2 Series champion. Meanwhile, Jake Kostecki joins from Matt Stone Racing, in place of Jack Le Brocq. The youngsters partner the experienced James Courtney and the unofficial team leader Cameron Waters, with the latter expected to once again carry the team’s hopes in 2022. With three wins and another Bathurst runners-up finish, Waters and the team need to be consistent to challenge for the title. WALKINSHAW ANDRETTI UNITED
The Holden team ended last season as the frontrunners with a dominant display at Mount Panorama that netted Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth the Bathurst 1000 title. The Ryan Walkinshaw-led team will be looking to carry that form into 2022 and mount a long-awaited championship challenge, two decades since it last won the title in its former guise as the Holden Racing Team. While Mostert remains for his third season with the team, Nick Percat (pictured right) arrives from Brad Jones Racing after an association with the Walkinshaws that dates back more than a decade. With Grant McPherson now established in the team, Geoffrey Slater arriving to engineer Percat and the momentum from Bathurst, Walkinshaw Andretti United shapes as a team to watch in 2022. BRAD JONES RACING
Brad Jones’ Holden team welcomes two new drivers into its fourcar line-up with the arrival of Bryce Fullwood and André Heimgartner (pictured above), in place of Nick Percat and Todd Hazelwood. Percat has led the team in recent seasons, with 2021 race winner Heimgartner expected to carry that mantle, aided by the arrival of experienced engineer Phil Keed. Fullwood settled into the main game with two seasons at Walkinshaw Andretti United, with his battle with Heimgartner a fascinating subplot within the team. Jack Smith and Macauley Jones return for another season, needing to match their new teammates. Whether the team can retain a place in the top 10 in the drivers’ championship remains to be seen, in what will be a big test without Percat and his departing engineer Andrew Edwards. EREBUS MOTORSPORT
Betty Klimenko’s gamble on youth paid off with rookies Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki exceeding expectations in 2021. Brown scored a race win and Kostecki three podiums in their full-time arrival into the main game, with both drivers inside the top 10 in the championship standings. Big things are now expected of both Holden drivers entering their second seasons, with continuity within the 16
team, the experience from their rookie campaigns and increased backing with Boost Mobile taking on the naming-rights sponsorship of both entries in 2022. Further wins and podiums could put Brown and Kostecki in the mix for the championship race should they carry their form from the latter half of 2021 into 2022. TEAM 18
The Charlie Schwerkolt-owned Holden team retains Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye for a third season, though there’s been an engineering reshuffle entering 2022. Richard Hollway returns to engineering duties after being the team’s head of engineering in 2021, replacing the Brad Jones Racing-bound Phil Keed as engineer for Pye, while Manuel Sanchez remains as Winterbottom’s engineer. Team 18 went without a podium in 2021, with Pye dropping out of the top 10 in the championship standings. Team 18 will need to rediscover its 2020 podium-getting form if it is to breakthrough for its long-awaited first win. GROVE RACING
The Grove family has completed its takeover of the team formerly known as Kelly Racing/Kelly Grove Racing, with Grove Racing hitting the grid in 2022. With Rick and Todd Kelly moving out of
SUPERCAR XTRA

the ownership structure, father-and-son duo Stephen and Brenton Grove are in charge and have hired former Triple Eight Race Engineering engineer David Cauchi as their new team principal. But with Cauchi serving out ‘gardening leave’ after departing his former team, Stephen Grove will fill the role for the first half of 2022. David Reynolds returns and is joined by 2021 Bathurstwinning co-driver Lee Holdsworth, who replaces the Brad Jones Racing-bound André Heimgartner. The most experienced combination on the grid will have Penrite backing on both of their Ford Mustangs. It will be the third season in which the team is running Mustangs, with the goal of more regular podiums. MATT STONE RACING
There’s an all-new line-up at Matt Stone’s Holden team, moving on from rookies Jake Kostecki and Zane Goddard with more experienced drivers Jack Le Brocq and Todd Hazelwood. It’s a return to the team for Hazelwood, following a two-year spell at Brad Jones Racing, while Le Brocq arrives from Tickford Racing, where he won a race in 2020 but struggled to match his teammates in 2021. Both drivers have shown flashes of front-running speed, so their form with such a young team compared to the benchmark set by its recent rookies will be telling of their and the team’s growth.
PREMIAIR RACING
Team Sydney becomes PremiAir Racing with the purchase of the Holden team by drag racer Peter Xiberras from the Webb family, led by former Bathurst winner Jonathon Webb. The team struggled for results in recent seasons, with Xiberras looking to turn around its fortunes with a new temporary base in Brisbane and sending its two ZB Commodores to Triple Eight Race Engineering for a service. Garry Jacobson returns to the team after joining at the start of last season, while Chris Pither replaces Fabian Coulthard after a one-year stint with the team in 2020. It’ll be a settling in season for the new-look team. BLANCHARD RACING TEAM
The Tim Blanchard-run Ford team enters its second season with Tim Slade back behind the wheel of the CoolDrive-backed Mustang. While the team has built on the foundations set from its debut season, it faces the added challenge of running a standalone pit entry in 2022 with Tickford Racing’s expansion to four cars bumping out its former tenant. The added cost and extra burden on the only single-car team on the grid adds to the pressure on the team to match its 2021 effort, which saw Slade finish 12th in the championship standings. Hidden Valley Raceway has been a regular on the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars calendar since its debut in 1998. The circuit features a 1.1-kilometre front straight, on an otherwise tight and twisty layout. The
heat and humidity of Darwin means tyre conservation is key in the races, which makes for interesting events. Darwin will feature three 110-kilometre sprint races in 2022, in its traditional June slot.

GOLD COAST
The streets of the Gold Coast haven’t hosted Supercars since 2019, with hopes of a return to the popular Surfers Paradise in 2022. In 2022 two 250-kilometre single-driver races are scheduled - a departure from the event’s previous format which hosted two-driver races
since 2010. The Gold Coast hosted IndyCars from 1991 to 2008, with Supercars racing for championship points at the event from 2002. The circuit was shortened in 2010 with the introduction of the twodriver format.

WORDS John Bannon IMAGES Triple Eight Race Engineering, Peter Norton
Repco Supercars Championship rookie Broc Feeney has swept all the age records before him: youngest Toyota 86 Series race winner, youngest Super3 Series champion and youngest Super2 Series winner. So, as he replaces seventime champion Jamie Whincup at Triple Eight Race Engineering, how long will it be before he’s knocking on the door of a main game title? 40

BROC FEENEY
N
inteen-year-old prodigy Broc Feeney hopes his Super2 Series championship win in 2021 has proved to any doubters that he’s at Triple Eight Race Engineering for a reason in 2022, as he steps into one of the best seats on the grid for his full-time main game debut. “I said if I win the Super2 championship, I think that I should be deserving to move up,” he says. “I wanted to go out as a worthy champion. I’m not here to make up the numbers; I’m here to win races, and that was my whole goal, to win as many races as I could and to wrap up the championship. I know that RD (Roland Dane) has been very good to me in giving me a massive opportunity, and so have many people.” The Queenslander’s meteoric rise to the Repco Supercars Championship has led a minority to question whether it’s all happened too fast, but his incredible results and record speed have led to plenty of new fans as well. “To be honest, I don’t really see too many haters out there; a lot of people have supported me, especially being a young kid,” he says. “Plenty of people have come up to me and have been very good. I didn’t want to go into this year as the runner-up because that was my last chance to be the Super2 champion. So, once it all got announced, my mindset did change. My whole goal was winning the championship. It hopefully showed the people who perhaps did have a bit of doubt that I’ve got that seat for a reason.” Despite his clear confidence, maturity and speed for a young man, Feeney responds without hesitation when asked whether the doubters have impacted him in any way. “Not at all; I know what my job is,” he says. “I don’t let anyone outside affect that. I just want to show that I think I’m very worthy of the seat I’ve got this year. I know the team around me believes that as well. Hopefully a few other people can believe that now too.” Feeney was introduced to motorsport through his father Paul, who raced on two wheels in the 1970s and 1980s, with the Gold Coast-born youngster picking up motorbikes at the age of just three. Feeney switched to karts at age nine and subsequently went on to win the 2017 Australian Karting Championship in the KA2 class and claimed podium honours in prestigious international events, the SuperNationals in Las Vegas and the ROK Cup in Italy. At just 15, Feeney moved into cars and became the youngest race winner in the Toyota 86 Series, but had to miss the Bathurst round because he was 11 days’ shy of the minimum age of 16 to race at the Mount Panorama Circuit. The age records kept on tumbling and in 2019 Feeney become the youngest driver to win the Super3 Series title against a competitive field, taking a pole position and race win in the opening round in his introduction to a V8. Feeney’s meteoric rise at such a young age has seen comparisons to other drivers like three-time 42

Jamie Whincup’s move into management paved the way for Broc Feeney to team with Shane van Gisbergen.
champion Scott McLaughlin and Triple Eight Race Engineering legend Craig Lowndes, who holds the youngest main game champion record at just 21 years and 11 months. “I saw a social media post that if I won the championship, I’d beat Scotty’s (McLaughlin) record as the youngest ever winner in Super2,” he recalls. “In 2018 I was the youngest ever Toyota 86 race winner. In 2019 I was the youngest ever Super3 champion, and now to be the youngest ever Super2 champion is a very cool stat to have. “To be beating Scotty’s records at the moment is very cool. It has been super quick for me, but I knew that it had to be. The budget had a cap on it. It was sort of my last crack at it, so to get it done has been awesome for me. “I knew it was my last chance of winning the Super2 championship, and I wanted that trophy next to the Super3 one. So now there is just one vacant space… hopefully I’ll carry that record of youngest champion over to the main game.” Feeney is another driver who’s benefited from the tutelage of talent spotter and 2014 Bathurst 1000 winner Paul Morris, along with the likes of Anton De Pasquale and Brodie Kostecki. Feeney is also a good friend of Nash Morris, the son of Paul and 2021 Super3 Series champion. “It’s been awesome; me and Nash have grown up together, went to school together and we’re like brothers,” he says. “We’re in the gym every morning. We said that the goal is to both be champions, myself in Super2 and Nash in Super3. So, to be both standing up there together at Bathurst, it’s awesome. It’s been so good to see him do it, and I’ve got no doubt he’ll be up here with the Super2 trophy.” Feeney acknowledges that his relationship with the Morris family and Paul Morris’ willingness to assist has greatly assisted his quick rise. “Three and a half years ago Paul picked me up from my house and took me out to Norwell (Motorplex) and taught me how to drive a manual,” he says. “From then on we’ve won a Super3 championship, a Super2 championship and are moving on to the main game. The group of people that I’ve got around me are so special to me. We’re a very tight group and the opportunities they’ve given me, and everything that’s happened over the past few years, we’ve got through so quick. “Stepping up to the main game at only 19 years of age is pretty special, especially in the team that I’m in. It’s a massive credit to the people that have been around me and the people that have supported me. I knew that I’d never step up if I didn’t have their support. The whole goal was to win the Super2 championship, and I knew if I did they’d be ready for me in the main game.” The teenager’s 2021 Super2 Series season was largely drama free, despite a penalty early in the championship campaign. “It was a great start to the year,” he says. “To kick off
“I JUST WANT TO SHOW THAT I THINK I’M VERY WORTHY OF THE SEAT I’VE GOT THIS YEAR. I KNOW THE TEAM AROUND ME BELIEVES THAT AS WELL. HOPEFULLY A FEW OTHER PEOPLE CAN BELIEVE THAT NOW TOO.” – BROC FEENEY with a new team, we won the first race. To be honest, the second race at Bathurst is the only race where I didn’t finish in the top two in a race, and that’s because I got a penalty. I actually would have won that race. So it was a little bit of a shame because we’ve had such an amazing year, one or two in every single race.” The Queenslander’s consistency was particularly impressive given it was his first full year of the Super2 Series, with an interrupted campaign in 2020 due to COVID-19. “That consistency was my whole mindset,” says Feeney. “People forget that I’m not treated as a rookie but I only did three rounds in Super2 in 2020. I was coming into the year very fresh against some new up and comers in the category as well as some guys who’ve been here for a few years. “To have such a good year; my whole goal was to win this championship. In the Super3 Series, I had a really consistent year, but I only won one once though. So I knew this year that I wanted to go and win a lot more. I went out there and did that, and I was very consistent as well. I finished first or second in every race apart from the second race at the start of the year. So I felt like I did quite a good job this year.” This year, Feeney will commence his rookie campaign filling the shoes of seven-time champion Jamie Whincup, who’ll in turn step up to managing director responsibilities. “I can’t wait for it, to be honest; it’s such a great opportunity to be under his wing,” says Feeney. “I’m sort of the first driver to come under his wing. Jamie and Shane (van Gisbergen) have been there for me this year, especially running in the main game at Bathurst. They’ve been helping me out a lot, talking through what’s happening with the car and stuff like that. “I spoke to Jamie a bit at SMP (Sydney Motorsport Park) about how he is going to help me this year. He has certainly got my back, and I know the rest of the team does as well. It’s very sad to see him go, to be honest. For as long as I can remember, he has been the one winning championships and dominating this sport. He’s been a big motivator for me to get into this.” SUPERCAR XTRA

six months.” Feeney’s rise to the main game comes at a time when other young guns have entered the sport, with Erebus Motorsport pair Will Brown and the aforementioned Kostecki joining last season and Tickford Racing’s Thomas Randle a fellow full-time rookie in 2022. “It’s so good to see those guys racing in the main game,” says Feeney. “It gives me a little bit of extra confidence going into this year. I raced those guys in Super2 and spent time with them, especially with Brodie and Anton. Hopefully that average age will drop again with me in there. “It’s a good thing to see young kids of the future, and Brodie and Will have definitely showed the reasons why young guys should race. Tom has got a bit of an age advantage on me and experience as well. “I feel like I’ve done the perfect pathway to get to Supercars. And hopefully that’s shown kids younger than me the perfect pathway to get here, and I just want everyone to have the same opportunity that I did.” While reserved about his goals for this season, Feeney has his eye on some lofty, yet realistic, longerterm ambitions. “To be honest, I’m not going in with a set expectation; I’m going in to learn and do as much as I can,” he says. “My end goal is to be Supercars champion, to win races and win the Bathurst 1000. I’m not putting a timeline on that. At the end of the day, my goal is to train as hard as I can. I’m going to work as hard as I can to try and match those guys that are winning championships and races. There’s no timeline, but that is certainly my goal, to be champion one day.”

WHINCUP’S WINNING TRIPLE EIGHT DEBUT
Jamie Whincup defied expectations when he won his first event with Triple Eight Race Engineering in Adelaide in 2006. With Whincup retiring from fulltime driving and rising star Broc Feeney taking his seat, we reflect on the significance of Whincup’s winning debut with the team he now manages.
T
eenager Broc Feeney certainly has big shoes to fill at Triple Eight Race Engineering. The full-time rookie replaces Jamie Whincup in the Holden team in 2022, with the pressure of not only getting up to speed in one of the best seats in Supercars but also in place of the driver who rewrote the record books in recent times. No one could’ve predicted the impact Whincup would have on Supercars when he signed as the number two to Craig Lowndes at Triple Eight in 2006. After being dumped by Garry Rogers Motorsport following a challenging rookie season in 2003, Whincup fought back from a year as an endurance co-driver at Perkins Engineering in 2004 to a careersaving full-time return with Tasman Motorsport in 2005. Triple Eight was on the rise with Lowndes challenging for the title in his first season with the team in 2005. And with two-time champion Marcos Ambrose departing to NASCAR, the Ford team seemed like the favourites for 2006. The season opener in Adelaide confirmed those expectations with Lowndes winning the first of the two 250km races. Whincup impressed in third place, after setting the second fastest time in qualifying.
After Lowndes was taken out in a multi-car accident in the second race, Whincup stepped up and secured the race win and the round sweep for Triple Eight. After only one round, Whincup had already proved he was worthy of the drive. With brothers Todd and Rick Kelly filling the rest of the podium placings and the likes of James Courtney, Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom moving into top drives and becoming regular contenders, there was a changing of the guard in the category.
Whincup finished the 2006 season in 10th place in the championship, teaming with Lowndes to win the first of three consecutive Bathurst 1000s for the duo. After 16 seasons with Triple Eight, Whincup bowed out with seven championship wins, four Bathurst 1000 wins and the record for most championship titles, race victories, podiums and pole positions. With Whincup moving into the role of Triple Eight team manager following his full-time retirement, Feeney steps into his former drive. Unlike Whincup in 2006,
Feeney is a full-time rookie who is four years younger than his new boss was in his Triple Eight debut. But, like Whincup, he has the pressure of racing against a championship and Bathurst-winning teammate in Shane van Gisbergen. Whether Feeney can match Whincup’s 2006 achievements remains to be seen. Nevertheless, like Whincup back in the mid-2000s, he represents another generation change. And he will have the driver many consider to be the greatest of all-time in his corner to help in his development.

FLASHBACK
THROUGH THE DECADES IMAGES Autopics.com.au, Peter Norton
As we get set for the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship, let’s look back at the key events in the history of Australian touring cars from the decade anniversaries.
1962
The Australian Touring Car Championship entered its third year with the single-race decider being held at the Longford Circuit in Tasmania, the road circuit that had previously held the Australian Grand Prix. The Jaguar Mark I had won the first two Australian Touring Car Championship titles with the British manufacturer expected to add a third title in 1962, with a strong line-up that included reigning champion Bill Pitt, Bob Jane, Bill Burns and Ian Geoghegan. However, Geoghegan was out before the race had even started, due to technical troubles. Jane started from pole position in his Mark II and raced away from the field to score his first Australian Touring Car Championship success. Pitt was slowed by mechanical dramas and finished more than 20 seconds behind Jane with Burns completing the all-Jaguar podium. Ken Brigden in a Peugeot 403 was best of the rest, a lap down in fourth place. Jane swapped his Jaguar for a Ford Falcon XL for the Armstrong 500 at Phillip Island later in the year, teaming with Harry Firth to win the endurance event for a second year in a row. It was the final Armstrong 500 held at Phillip Island, with the event moving to the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst from 1963.
A young Victorian by the name of Peter Brock made his championship debut driving a Holden LJ Torana GTR XU-1 for the Holden Dealer Team. And though he didn’t score a point, he shot to prominence at the Bathurst 500. On a rain sodden day at Mount Panorama, Brock steered the nimble Torana to victory, with the reigning champion Moffat plagued by problems throughout the race. It was the first win for the Torana at Bathurst, with Brock emerging as Holden’s new hero and setting the foundations for further Great Race success in the final Bathurst 500. It was all change for 1973 with the championship switching from Improved Production to the locally-derived Group C regulations, which would match up with the Great Race that was expanding from 500 miles to 1000 kilometres to give birth to the Bathurst 1000.
1972
The 1972 Australian Touring Car Championship marked the final season for the Improved Production regulations, with the likes of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Holden Monaro set to be replaced by Holden Toranas and Ford Falcons in 1973. Bob Jane had won the 1971 title in a Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1, defending his title in the Camaro which was forced into an engine reduction from seven litres to 5.7 litres. Jane won four of the eight rounds, including three in a row in the second half of the season, to score his fourth and final championship win, a decade since his first title success. Allan Moffat won three rounds in his Ford Boss 302 Mustang, while Ian Geoghegan driving a Ford XY Falcon GTHO Phase III prevailed in a titanic battle with Jane and Moffat at Bathurst. While Moffat and Geoghegan were Jane’s closest championship challengers, it was Mike Stillwell and his Ford Escort Twin Cam Mk.1 from the under two-litre class that claimed second in the championship as a result of the quirks of the points system. 46

1982
Dick Johnson rose to the top of Australian touring cars with his championship and Bathurst double in 1981. And though he would defend his title in 1982, it was a victory clouded by controversy. Johnson won three of eight rounds and was awarded the title when rival Peter Brock was disqualified from six of the eight rounds. Brock had scored more points than Johnson before the disqualifications, but his Holden Dealer Team had used illegal inlet manifolds that led to the penalties. The matter was decided after a series of legal challenges by the Holden Dealer Team, leaving Johnson as champion and Brock with one win and fifth in the championship. It was a disappointing follow-up from Johnson and Brock’s last-round championship
showdown in 1981. Other round winners included Allan Moffat in his increasingly competitive Mazda RX-7, Kevin Bartlett in his Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Allan Grice in a Holden VH Commodore SS. But it was under 3000cc class competitor Bob Holden and his Ford Escort Mk.II who finished second in the championship. Brock overcame his championship disappointment to win the Bathurst 1000, teaming with Larry Perkins with Holdens filling the top four positions. It was Brock’s sixth victory, extending his record for most wins in the event, and the first for Perkins. Johnson and Brock may have split championship and Bathurst honours between them, but the off-track squabbles left a bitter taste.

1992
Nissan took championship and Bathurst honours with the Skyline R32 GT-R in 1991. And despite attempts to hobble the car nicknamed ‘Godzilla’, there would be no stopping the Japanese manufacturer in 1992. The Skylines were forced to run with an extra 40 kilograms in addition to pop-off valves to restrict the power from the turbo engines. However, reigning champion Jim Richards and Mark Skaife remained the overwhelming title favourites. Skaife opened the season with the round win at Amaroo Park and won four of the nine rounds in total. While he notched up wins and scored top-three finishes in all but two rounds, Richards failed to win a round with Skaife going on to claim his first championship success. While Nissan held sway in the championship standings, with a second consecutive one-two finish, there were round wins for the Ford Sierra RS500s of John Bowe and Glenn Seton and the BMW M3 of Tony Longhurst. Longhurst finished ahead of Bowe and Seton in the championship standings, with Holden languishing with a solitary race win for Peter Brock in the season opener with the introduction of two races per round in 1992. With the Nissans absent from the Sandown 500, Larry Perkins and Steve Harrington scored a popular win for Holden in the older model VL Commodore. Nissan returned for Bathurst, playing a starring role in the drama that unfolded in the Great Race. Skaife and Richards were leading when the latter was caught out by heavy rain in the late stages of the race. With cars strewn across the track, the race was red flagged and the Nissan declared the winner for a second consecutive year despite being parked up by the side of the road and the Sierra of Bowe and Dick Johnson still running. With the crowd turning on the Nissan drivers, as frustration at their dominance reached its boiling point, Richards delivered his infamous “pack of arseholes” speech from the podium. It was a controversial end for the Group A era, which despite the variety of machinery and manufacturers, had been reduced to one-sided domination by Nissan. From 1993, the V8 Ford Falcon versus Holden Commodore rules that became the foundation of V8 Supercars were introduced. There would be no room for Nissan’s all-conquering Skyline, which departed with consecutive championship and Bathurst doubles.
48
2002
The Holden Racing Team and Mark Skaife carried their dominant form from 2001 into 2002, winning the championship and Bathurst 1000 double for a second consecutive season. Skaife, still driving the Holden VX Commodore chassis number 045 which became known as the ‘Golden Child’, continued where he left off from the previous season, winning the opening five rounds of the 2002 season. With teammate Jason Bright notching up two round wins in the middle of the season, the Holden Racing Team claimed victory in the opening eight rounds of the championship. With the VX on a winning roll and Ford’s AU Falcon struggling to keep pace, the off-track talk was dominated by debates around parity, which eventually led to the introduction of the Project Blueprint regulations from 2003. Ford fought back with victory to Stone Brothers Racing’s David Besnard and Simon Wills in the Queensland 500, but Holden reasserted its dominance in the Bathurst 1000. Skaife teamed with Jim Richards, a decade since their infamous Great Race win with Nissan in 1992, repeating their victory to give Skaife the Bathurst and championship double for another season. Commodores filled the top five positions in the race, underlining Holden’s superiority. Garry Rogers Motorsport and Kmart Racing scored nonHolden Racing Team Commodore round wins courtesy of Jason Bargwanna and Greg Murphy at the Gold Coast and Pukekohe respectively, while Ford claimed its second win of the season with Stone Brothers Racing’s Marcos Ambrose at the season finale at Sandown to give a taste of what was to come in 2003. In the end, though, 2002 belonged to Holden, with Ambrose the only Ford driver in the top six in the championship standings. Skaife had won his fourth Bathurst 1000 and equalled the record for most championship wins with his fifth title. However, despite their dominance in 2001 and 2002, it would be the final drivers’ championship win for Skaife and the Holden Racing Team.

2012
After losing out on the championship in 2010, in Triple Eight Race Engineering’s first season running Holden Commodores, Jamie Whincup returned to the top in 2011. By the end of 2012, he had confirmed his dominance and had also returned to the top step at the Mount Panorama Circuit. The 2012 season started with a strong challenge from Ford Performance Racing, with Will Davison edging Whincup at the season opener in Adelaide and Davison and teammate Mark Winterbottom winning seven consecutive races across three rounds in Hamilton, Perth and Phillip Island. Triple Eight returned serve with a run of 11 consecutive wins, starting at Darwin in June and ending at the Gold Coast in October. Whincup claimed six of those wins to teammate Craig Lowndes’ five, with the team carrying that form into the endurance events. Lowndes partnered with Warren Luff to take the win in the Sandown 500 with Whincup and Paul Dumbrell on top in the Bathurst 1000. Sébastien Bourdais joined Whincup for the Gold Coast 600 and won the opening race of the event, only for Ford Performance Racing to end Triple Eight’s run with a win courtesy of Davison and Mika Salo in the second race. Whincup returned to his winning ways with a sweep of the event at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, wrapping up the championship with
a storming drive from a pitlane penalty at the penultimate event of the season at Winton. Lowndes secured second in the standings with Davison overcoming Winterbottom in the battle for third with victory in the final race of the season in Sydney. Triple Eight and Ford Performance Racing had won all 30 races between them – 19 to Triple Eight and 11 to Ford Performance Racing. Stone Brothers Racing was best of the rest, with Tim Slade edging Shane van Gisbergen in the race for fifth place in the championship, while reigning Bathurst 1000 winners the Holden Racing Team could only manage a handful of third places. For Whincup, it was his fourth championship win from five years and his fourth Bathurst 1000 triumph. Not only was it his second championship and Bathurst double, it also remains his most recent win in the Great Race. The Car of the Future regulations opened up the category to nonFord and Holden entrants from 2013, with Kelly Racing switching to Nissan Altimas and Stone Brothers Racing morphing into Erebus Motorsport to field AMG Mercedes-Benz E63s. So, what looked like the final season of the Ford and Holden duopoly had been a head-to-head battle between the two leading teams of each manufacturer. SUPERCAR XTRA
