LET THE BATTLE RECOMMENCE

T

he word ‘unprecedented’ has been used a lot in recent times, and with good reason. The COVID-19 pandemic reached all corners of the globe and impacted every sector. In our Supercars world, there will have been 108 days between the suspension of the 2020 season during the Beaurepaires Melbourne 400 to the recommencement at Sydney Motorsport Park. Supercars will restart in a new world and with new challenges to face, off the back of General Motors retiring the Holden brand in Australia at the end of 2020 and question marks over the future direction of the series under Gen3. And all this has happened in the year the category celebrates its 60th anniversary. The pause in racing opened up some new opportunities

and allowed time for reflection. This issue of SupercarXtra Magazine represents that time, with a look at what filled the racing void and a celebration of the past 60 years of the championship. We look at the impact of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries not only on virtual racing but also in the real world. The rest of the issue focuses on the history of the championship, headlined by our ranking of the top 60 drivers over the last 60 years. Though it’s not an exact science, ranking the best drivers provides a fascinating snapshot of the heroes of the championship and their achievements over the decades. We also rank the top 10 makes, cars, teams, races, seasons and more, rounding out our 60th anniversary celebrations in this issue. The print edition of this

issue also includes a pullout poster commemorating the championship-winning drivers from 1960 to 2019. Elsewhere, we analyse the latest news in our ‘Analysis’ section, while Craig Lowndes, Ryan Story and Mark Winterbottom share their thoughts in their columns. We also reflect back on the recently departed Sir Stirling Moss’ appearance in the Bathurst 1000 alongside Sir Jack Brabham in 1976 in our new ‘From the Archives’ section. Visit us at SupercarXtra. com.au to follow the latest news throughout the 2020 season and to shop at our online store, or keep in touch with us on our social media channels on Twitter and Instagram (both @SupercarXtra) and on Facebook (Facebook. com/SupercarXtra). GETTING BACK

ON TRACK

The 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship restarts with a condensed calendar of events following the COVID-19 pandemic.

T

he 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship gets back up and running following a threemonth suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season was suspended during the Beaurepaires Melbourne 400 weekend, leaving just two races completed from

the Superloop Adelaide 500. Street-circuit events such as Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Newcastle will drop off the calendar with the likes of Darwin, Perth, Tasmania, Sandown and more rescheduled, in addition to a return to Sydney Motorsport Park. Meanwhile, the Bathurst 1000 retains its original October date.

The first version of the revised calendar featured a now dropped second round at Bathurst in 2021, though the second version will see the season end within 2020. “This is a fixed stake in the ground that we can now move forward on, and we all need to be flexible on how much racing we can and can’t do over the coming eight months,”

says Supercars CEO Sean Seamer, wary of the ongoing uncertainty. “We looked at everything. We looked at bubble concepts; we looked at back-to-back rounds. But the calendar has been formulated in such a way that we’ve been able to maintain the spacing between the rounds, for both medical and cost reasons.

Supercars will race with crowd restrictions for the foreseeable future.

“We believe it allows us to maintain our national footprint, which is really important to us.” Sydney Motorsport Park hosts the return round on June 27 to 28. A second round at Sydney Motorsport Park under lights is set to conclude the season in December. “It’s in between most of our teams in Queensland and Victoria; it has the convenience of the hotel over the road; it also has good proximity for TV crews so we can have less people travelling interstate to deliver the event,” says Seamer on the choice of Sydney Motorsport Park. “In addition to that, it’s a good precinct for us from a management point of view. There’s plenty of room out the back of the pits, it has big pit garages, so it enables us to meet the restrictions

and be compliant. So it was a compliance decision and also a logistical decision. “On the basis that we are chartering the teams in and out on tight turnaround times, the night racing doesn’t work and, obviously, they need a bit more time to complete the [permanent] light towers.” While the Bathurst 1000 will retain its four-day schedule and its endurance format, the rest of the rounds are scheduled as two-day events with an emphasis on sprint-race formats to limit the number of team personnel required to attend. When crowd restrictions lift remains in doubt, and will depend on the rules in place in each respective state and territory. “We’re buoyed by the conversations we’re having with state governments and excited

for both Winton and Bathurst to see Stage Two and the ability for campgrounds to open,” says Seamer. “So we’ll be working with both of those state governments on camping plans for those events.” Supercars has tried to retain a presence in all states and the Northern Territory. “The fact that we go everywhere nationally is important to us, it’s important to our DNA, and we’ve done everything that we can to make sure that we can get up to Townsville, just in the same way as getting back to Winton,” says Seamer. In contrast, the rounds on the Gold Coast and Newcastle were deemed unfeasible given the cost of building the tracks amid the uncertainty over when fans will be allowed to attend.

“We’ve worked with our partners in state and local governments, and over the past two weeks, and the discussions that we’ve had, we’ve taken the decision to exclude them from the remainder of this calendar for a range of reasons, not withstanding the disruption that the residents of those cities have already been through this COVID-19 crisis,” explains Seamer. Should a driver or team be forced to withdraw from any event on the revised calendar due to COVID-19, the final championship points for both the drivers and teams’ championships will be calculated by dropping the worst event points from the final points score. Stay tuned to SupercarXtra. com.au for the latest news on the calendar, formats, rules and more.

chassis at around $300,000 and a shape that is more accommodating for different types of car stylings, such as two-door coupes. Also in the spotlight is the cost of engines, with off-theshelf engines set to be made available to teams for a significantly reduced price with a focus on retaining V8s. The Gen3 working group is led by Supercars senior executive John Casey and includes the organisation’s head of motorsport, Adrian Burgess, along with team bosses Roland Dane and Ryan Story.

Holden’s retirement saw the factory’s deal with Triple Eight Race Engineering concluding a year earlier than planned, bringing an end to a 50-year factory-backed presence for the make in Australian touring cars. “GM Holden and Triple Eight Race Engineering have reached an amicable agreement in the wake of Holden’s announcement that the manufacturer will be closing later this year,” said a statement from Triple Eight Race Engineering. “The settlement, the details of which are

commercially confidential, will see the Red Bull Holden Racing Team remain on the grid in its present guise until the end of the current Virgin Australia Supercars Championship season. “The existing contract had been due to expire at the end of 2021. “The future branding of Triple Eight’s Supercars team is yet to be determined, with the current contract between co-title partner Red Bull and Triple Eight in place until at least the end of the 2021 season. “The whole team at Triple

Eight extends their heartfelt thanks to Holden, all Holden employees past and present with whom we’ve interacted, and the dealer network for their incredible support and friendship over the past decade. “The team is totally committed to delivering the best possible results, both on and off the track, for the remainder of the season.” While the current ZB Commodore Supercar will still be on the Supercars grid next season, the cars will run without Holden branding.

COURTNEY GETS A FORD BOOST

After splitting with Team Sydney following just one round, James Courtney and sponsor Boost Mobile have resurfaced at Tickford Racing in place of Will Davison and 23 Red Racing.

J

ames Courtney is back racing a Ford in Supercars for the first time since his championship win with Dick Johnson Racing in 2010. Following nine seasons with the Holden Racing Team/ Walkinshaw Racing/Walkinshaw Andretti United outfit, Courtney’s stint with Team Sydney (formerly Tekno Autosports) lasted just one round in 2020. Then, the sudden departure of 23 Red Racing and Will Davison created an opening for Courtney and sponsor Boost Mobile to move to Tickford Racing. “Certainly it’s unfortunate what has happened with Will and 23 Red,” says Courtney. “It’s a tough situation, but when one door closes another opens, and I’m just grateful

that Boost Mobile have come on board and tapped me to continue in growing and building Boost Mobile Racing. “Given the way my last few months have gone, I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. From the end of February up until now, my world’s been upside down and all over the place. “To come out of that situation with this opportunity, I’m very happy. I see a lot of potential in what we can achieve together, and I’m looking forward to racing for Boost Mobile Racing and working alongside the incredibly talented team at Tickford Racing. “To get back into a Ford is exciting as well. The last time I stepped out of a Ford I was champion, so stepping back in brings some good memories.

“It does bring you some warm feelings. I’ve obviously had some great results with Ford and coming back brings back all those fond memories. Hopefully we’ll create some more in the Boost Mobile Ford Mustang.” 23 Red Racing withdrew from Supercars in May following the departure of title sponsor Milwaukee Tools. The team made its debut in 2018, running as an independent entity and fielding Davison in its customer Ford FG X Falcon. The entry moved into Tickford Racing’s stable with the switch to the Ford Mustang in 2019, scoring two podium placings. Davison started the 2020 season with two top-five finishes in Adelaide and sat in fifth place in the drivers’ championship when the

season was suspended, with the team’s exit leaving the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner out of a full-time drive for the first time since 2005. “I’ve been in motorsport my entire working career and since the inception of 23 Red Racing, I’ve been nothing short of committed to building a front-running team,” says 23 Red Racing owner Phil Munday. “The start to the 2020 season showed signs we were in contention for consistent podiums, the results any team owner would want. The uncertainty and unprecedented times have forced some tough decisions. “It is deeply saddening to exit the sport earlier than planned; however, we are certainly proud of our achievements.”

James Courtney and Boost Mobile started the season with Team Sydney and will resume it with Tickford Racing.

VIRTUAL MOVES

The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries provided some racing during the suspension of the season, paving the way for more regular virtual contests.

V

irtual racing will become a fixture on the Supercars schedule beyond the restart of the current season. Supercars launched the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries when the COVID-19 pandemic forced a suspension of the 2020 season, with drivers taking part in the online competition on the iRacing platform. Supercars enjoyed solid ratings for its virtual racing, filling the void of live sport as one of the few sporting categories that could mimic its real-life competition.

With the full grid of drivers racing in their real-life liveries, Supercars drew praise for its virtual offering relative to other motorsport categories around the world. The addition of international motorsport stars such as Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Joey Logano and more also increased interest. With real-life racing resuming in June, Supercars will look to fill non-racing weeks with virtual offerings. “We’re very pleased with the ongoing growth of this format,” says Supercars CEO Sean Seamer. “It is not lost on us how fortunate we are to be able to offer

everyone some entertainment while we aren’t racing. “A big thank you should go to our drivers and teams for getting behind the concept, and thank you also to the number of household names that are joining them each week.” The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries contributed to the growth of the virtual racing industry, with simulator builders reporting increased demand and record sales. The live broadcast numbers included impressive figures on online platforms such as Twitch and social media pages, with Supercars teams and drivers hosting their own streams.

“I’m a big fan of online racing,” says Scott McLaughlin, a regular on iRacing who won races in the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries plus the IndyCar Series’ virtual events. “With this unprecedented situation meaning we can’t race our real cars, I think this is as good a substitute as possible. “How cool is it that we can do this? We’re pretty much the only sport that can still compete in the online space. “This has the potential to introduce a whole new legion of fans to our sport.” For more on the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries and virtual racing, turn to page 22.

EXPERT INSIGHT

THE INSIDE STORY Column by Ryan Story

THE NEW NORMAL

A

s we prepare for the return of racing, the whole Supercars pitlane is wondering how things will look. And work. With the World Health Organisation declaring novel coronavirus a global pandemic, our lives instantly changed. No one was immune, not even race teams. Cancelling the Australian Grand Prix was the right choice. In a game of Mexican standoff, common sense prevailed. Our technical director Nick Hughes has spent a lot of time in the United States of America with the good ol’ boys of NASCAR. He’s prone to using a saying that has never been more pertinent: “Motor racing is like wiping your arse with a hula hoop, eventually the same shit comes back around.” And so a lot of energy has been expended talking about race formats for our return to racing, that and everything in between. Things like reverse grids, no pitstops, new cars… So much hot air has been expended that one might suggest new holes in the ozone layer may have developed over north Sydney, Melbourne and south-east Queensland! But rest assured, the core product is at the forefront of all our minds; that and the ongoing sustainability of all our teams. Supercars truly is the best touring car category in the world. We forget that sometimes. When NASCAR returned to 14

racing, TV ratings went through the roof. People were desperate for live sport and for motor racing to return to their screens and into their lives. We have been incredibly fortunate with the Eseries. Supercars, and head of TV, Nathan Prendergast, deserves great kudos for what has been a successful venture for all of us, ensuring that Supercars was front and centre in a nationwide live sports vacuum. Along the way a great deal of focus and effort has been placed on the health and wellbeing of our staff. Many teams were able to take advantage of JobKeeper, and that has been a saving grace in a period of doubt and uncertainty. People capital is everything. With the best people you can achieve great success. The importance of taking care of the many over the few is vital for survival, but understanding and appreciating the needs of individuals and their circumstances does indeed engender loyalty. Heading to Sydney Motorsport Park with new formats designed to bring some excitement and spectacle to racing whilst respecting the new normal of social distancing and other COVID-19 derived best practices hasn’t been without challenge. Racing without a live crowd will be something a bit different, but given the tremendous progress made over recent months, let’s hope that’s a short-term thing and we can let the punters back through the gates soon. Changes to pitstops and less

personnel on the ground certainly make for a new normal too, but everyone is in the same boat. Across the field, teams will make mistakes, strategy will come into play and the pressure will be on! That aside we have allowed for flexibility as we progress through the proceeding rounds of the revised 2020 season calendar. One must never lose sight of the fact that we are in the entertainment business; if we’re not entertaining, we’re not in business. Hence, we must be nimble and respect that we can never

unlearn what we have learned. But that said, with the recent hoarding and shortages of toilet paper, let’s ensure we don’t resort to using hula hoops instead! Recycling is for paper, cans and bottles, not necessarily ideas. Finally, I want to pay tribute to Phil Munday and 23 Red Racing. Phil is a gentleman of the highest calibre and a good man who has invested heavily in motorsport over many years. Whilst he won’t be a stranger to us, he and his team will be sorely missed. – Ryan

“THE CORE PRODUCT IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL OUR MINDS; THAT AND THE ONGOING SUSTAINABILITY OF ALL OUR TEAMS. SUPERCARS TRULY IS THE BEST TOURING CAR CATEGORY IN THE WORLD. WE FORGET THAT SOMETIMES.”

EXPERT INSIGHT

BEYOND THE WHEEL Column by Mark Winterbottom

RACING VIRTUALLY

R

acing online in the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries was a new experience for me. While there were some carryover traits from racing in real life, there were also some significant differences. Online racing comes down to a lot of repetition. So if you brake in the same spot, with the same brake pressure, turn the steering wheel and accelerate the same way, you’ll get the same result. However, in real life you go into a corner and you can’t always take that same approach. You can be close, but it’s just a slightly different tyre, a slightly different temperature and, as a result, a slightly different brake marker. There’s always something that’s slightly different in real life. So unless you have the time to practice and repeat online, it’s hard to break through. What is the same between the two is race craft, which was evident in the BP Supercars All

16

Stars Eseries. Take Shane van Gisbergen, for example; he’s a good racer and when pitted against experienced sim-racers who are potentially quicker, he still outraces them. Your senses such as sight, sound and feel all come into play when racing online, but to varying degrees compared to real life. For example, without the level of sensory feel we get from sitting in a race car, it’s harder to tell when the car is sliding and you’re going to spin in the virtual arena. That’s where the practice time is crucial, so those things become more predictable and you can anticipate what’s going to happen. Then there’s also the variables of the level of simulator and its calibration, which only adds to the complexity of racing online. It works for some and not so much for others. While I play computer games for fun and think of them as good for brain training, I’d personally rather go to the gym and smash out an hour session

than spend an hour racing in the simulator. If you are relying too heavily on the simulator, it can create some bad habits relating to the things that don’t carry over to real life. Where it does help, though, is in the early stages of development. My nine-year-old son loves it, and it will be really good for him if he races gokarts one day. He’s already driving around and understanding braking, accelerating, steering, etc. He’s actually doing really well at it and I’ve seen a massive improvement in him. So it’s really good for training to get you to a level, but then if you’re at a level, does it help you anymore? I’m not sure.

But, in terms of having a competition when we couldn’t race in real life, it was a good thing and the closest any other sport could get. For us drivers, it was good mind and visual training. There’s nothing like driving the cars in real life, though. And it’s going to be interesting to see how we adapt to getting back on track after what’s effectively been another offseason and with such limited time on track. The expectation and the delivery of what you have to give is higher than ever, so it’s going to be tough. But I’d expect to be pushing the car to its limits and I’d expect the same of the other blokes, too. – Frosty

RIGHT ON TRACK

Column by Craig Lowndes

SPRINTING BACK INTO ACTION

T

he Virgin Australia Supercars Championship returns with shorter sprint races on the reworked calendar in 2020. The shorter races bring a different element to what we’ve become used to in recent seasons. It’s short, sharp and explosive; you need to make sure you qualify well, get a good start and minimise mistakes to stay up front. As for the possibility of reverse-grid races, which was discussed before the season resart, they can be quite hit and miss. It will often depend on whether you get caught up in the carnage around you or not. What it does show, though, is the craftsmanship of drivers; race craft and overtakes need to be clean and decisive. There is a risk that reversegrid races will result in more damage and prove costly to teams, so one suggestion would be to have another race soon after the reverse-grid race so the drivers will be forced to minimise risks knowing there is a short window for repairs. The last time we used reverse grids was in 2006, which impacted the title fight as it came down to a bit of luck in avoiding the loss of too many points and consistency. Hopefully we don’t see the format adversely impact the title race, as we want the fastest cars and drivers up at the front and fighting it out for the championship.

18

The new format will mix it up, but we should see the same entries at the front of the field, which is what we want as this season was shaping up as a competitive contest between the heavyweights. Not only did we have Triple Eight Race Engineering and DJR Team Penske battling it out up front, there were new combinations like Chaz Mostert at Walkinshaw Andretti United and Kelly Racing with its Ford Mustangs getting amongst them. There was also the possibility of a Bathurst sprint round for the first time since 1996. Though it won’t happen this season, it could still be on the cards for the future.

It would a great addition as it’s a track we love to race at any time we can, and it would be fascinating to watch Supercars in sprint mode at such a challenging circuit. The Bathurst 1000 is all about getting into a strong position for the decisive final stints, whereas there won’t be that chance to climb your way into contention in the sprint races there. Teams and drivers would have to focus on outright speed without any compromise of setting up the car with the co-drivers, so the lap times could tumble. Obviously, it’s disappointing that there will be a reduction in the number of endurance events this season.

The mentality and pressure will be the same as last year, when we started the PIRTEK Enduro Cup at Bathurst before going to the Gold Coast and Sandown. There will be limited time in the car for the co-drivers this season, but that will be the same across the board with the main drivers also missing out on track time and having been in sprint mode for most of the campaign. It will be fascinating to watch the drivers get back up and running as this break has, effectively, been like another off-season. We can’t wait to get racing once again. – Craig

“THE SHORTER RACES BRING A DIFFERENT ELEMENT TO WHAT WE’VE BECOME USED TO IN RECENT SEASONS. IT’S SHORT, SHARP AND EXPLOSIVE; YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU QUALIFY WELL, GET A GOOD START AND MINIMISE MISTAKES...”

VIRTUAL

The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries has paved the way for Supercars to further embrace virtual racing, opening up an important avenue to attract and engage with new audiences for the category. 22

or some it was the coming of age for virtual racing. For others, it was nothing more than a glorified computer game. But, no matter where you stood in between those viewpoints, there could be no denying the value of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries

during the break in racing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While other sports were left with no new content to deliver, motorsport could at least mimic its real-life product thanks to an online platform such as iRacing and the technological advancements in simulators. SUPERCAR XTRA

BP SUPERCARS ALL STARS ESERIES

ABOVE: The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries gave Supercars the opportunity to race virtually at some of the great international circuits.

Supercars’ offering was praised worldwide for its professionalism, featuring all of its full-time drivers racing in their real-life liveries and complete with commentary and stewards as if it were happening in the real world. While it was considered a bit of fun by many, there will be a long-lasting impact from the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries moving into future virtual-racing contests. It will allow Supercars to expand its offering to prospective sponsors and partners, with the potential of bringing in a whole new audience to the category. Supercars’ data analytical partners reported that the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries reached half a million viewers who had never been exposed to the sport before. Television ratings on Fox Sports Australia peaked

THE ORIGINAL COCKPIT

While Esports have become even more popular of late, Hyperdrive and its Adelaide-manufactured simulators have been at the forefront of race simulation since the Australian company entered the market with ‘The Original Cockpit’ in 1998. Further boosting Hyperdrive’s ability to lead the way in Esports in Australia is the fact that since 2012, it has partnered with PlayStation Australia to operate the GT Academy and has also played a role in the SBS Speedweek Eseries. Hyperdrive’s latest racing rig - ‘The E-series™’ - delivers excellent rigidity, stability and versatility with heaps of unique upgradeable features, which gives customers an extra edge against their competitors. 24

at 76,000 and averaged around 50,000, often as the most-watched shows on the network at a time when there was little in the way of live sport. Given the great economic uncertainty and in lieu of real-life racing, it was one key way in which Supercars and its teams could cater to their sponsors. Supercars found that 45 percent of the audience for its 2019 Gfinitiy Supercars Eseries, featuring sim-racers only, fell in the 18 to 34 years of age demographic. With traditional motorsport audiences leaning more towards an older demographic, virtual racing is seen as a vital strategy in bringing in a new and younger audience to the sport. The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries also gave drivers the chance to reach out to their fans in ways that simply aren’t possible in real-life racing, such as

Hyperdrive’s success is due to its philosophy, which ensures its customers can have confidence in the originally-designed cockpit system, which Hyperdrive is continually developing to support the latest technology in gaming peripherals. Hyperdrive prides itself on the fact that all of its customers are still able to upgrade and buy add-ons for all of their cockpit models. For example, add-ons like seat lift height options ensure drivers can customise the seat height for the perfect position for long-distance driving, while single or triple screens, dashboards and VR ready rigs produce the best immersive sim-racing experience. And its all made in Australia!

streaming to and interacting directly with their own audiences on their social media channels, most notably on Twitch. Scott Pye, for example, launched his Twitch channel during the pandemic, streaming his BP Supercars All Stars Eseries races, post-race debriefs and other iRacing outings. By the end of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries, he had generated 120,000-plus views and, perhaps more importantly for the long-term, engaged with his fans, old and new, like he couldn’t before. The growth of audiences associated with Supercars on platforms such as Twitch will only help the inevitable move of real-life racing to these streaming services, given the transition of viewers from traditional platforms such as free-to-air and paytelevision to online. Therefore, it’s no surprise that virtual racing will continue in tandem with real-life racing, filling gaps in the schedule in between the main events. The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries also allowed for dreamticket items that wouldn’t be possible in the real world, with racing taking place at ovals, such as Michigan International Speedway, and great grand prix tracks, such as Monza, SpaFrancorchamps and Silverstone. It also paved the way for a variety of non-Supercars drivers to join the field, including international stars such as Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Joey Logano; legends of the sport such

as Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander and Marcos Ambrose; and simracing experts such as Fawzan El-Nabi. The debate over the crossover in skills between virtual and real-life racing will continue. The best performers of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries were inevitably the younger generation of drivers who have significant iRacing experience, including Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin. Yet they fought it out for the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries just as they have done in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Despite the inclusion of sim-racing experts, the talent of Supercars drivers still shone through. Even in Formula 1’s virtual contest, racing on its own more arcade-style game, the stars of real life such as Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon and George Russell regularly defeated the more experienced sim-racers. As Mark Winterbottom noted: “What is the same between the two is race craft, which was evident in the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries. Take Shane van Gisbergen, for example; he’s a good racer and when pitted against experienced sim-racers who are potentially quicker, he still outraces them.” He added: “Your senses such as sight, sound and feel all come into play when racing online, but to varying degrees compared to real life. For example, without the level of sensory feel we get from sitting in a race car, it’s harder to tell when the car is sliding and you’re going to spin in the virtual arena.”

“THE STIGMA OF ONLINE RACING SEEMS TO HAVE GONE AWAY… I THINK ONLINE RACING IS HERE TO STAY; IT REALLY IS FANTASTIC.” – MARCOS AMBROSE

The level of simulators, which in some cases include free-moving rigs, and the use of three screens or virtual-reality headsets can help increase these senses within the virtual-racing experience. Ambrose is one of the few veterans of Supercars who had previous experience in online racing, as one of the early proponents of iRacing and from using simulators to assist with his real-life racing. He argued that the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries has helped to legitimise virtual racing to a wider audience. “I keep telling myself it’s actually just a computer game and it’s not a real-life thing,” said Ambrose. “It feels like you’re in the car and with the motion included and the competition; it’s just like the real thing. “It’s great to see all the drivers supporting it; the stigma of online racing seems to have gone away. “I think online racing is here to stay; it really is fantastic.” In contrast to Ambrose, fellow Supercars champion Lowndes was a newcomer to virtual racing. He noted the absence of one key trait of virtual racing. “It was completely different for me,” he explained. “While I understand the younger generations have grown up with it as part of their training, the one big thing I’ve always relied on is that tactile feel of the car moving around beneath your bum. “By taking that sense away, and losing the understanding of how the car is moving, sliding, etc, it’s really difficult to enhance your hand and eye co-ordination. “While it was difficult for me to move into the virtual-reality world, it was still a lot of fun and I appreciate that there is some merit in it.” With restrictions in real-life testing and track time, especially in the new economic climate postpandemic, virtual racing is arguably the best way for drivers to work on their race craft and other driving fundamentals. While some drivers may only use virtual racing to sharpen up their skills or learn/train on a particular circuit, the real potential is how it allows Supercars and its drivers to engage with new and old fans alike. Virtual racing is indeed here to stay, with the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries more than just a stop-gap solution for when real-life racing stopped.

The BP Supercars All Stars Eseries produced actionpacked contests.

F

ormula 1, MotoGP, Formula E, WEC and NASCAR are just some of the big-name races that were postponed due to the COVID-19 international pandemic. Supercars and indoor simulator rigs have become more and more popular. With the ability to set up simulator platforms in your own home and play racing games with simulator rigs with your Xbox or PlayStation, the market for these products has skyrocketed. Since 2008 Trak Racer has been striving for perfection and engineering rigs that get better and better with each model produced. Despite not being able to immerse yourself into the epic environment of a real-life race, we have found even pro drivers are competing using sim rigs, including professional drivers like Supercars star Anton De Pasquale, who is driving virtually with Trak Racer’s sim rigs. They are not only competing with other pro drivers but also taking on gamers who are putting the pedal to the metal in their sim rigs at home. Racing simulators have skyrocketed in popularity in recent times, with one of the reasons being that they bear a striking resemblance to real-life experiences on the race track; that awesome rush of adrenaline and the skill-sets required to beat the competition on the track.

SX117 p27 Trak Racer advertorial.indd 27

When you immerse yourself into racing on Trak Racer’s epic sim rigs, you get as close as you can get to that feeling. Trak Racer is one of the biggest and best suppliers of sim rigs, offering a range of sim racing frames to suit all budgets and demands, ranging from the FS3 Wheel Stand at $299 to the TR160 Pro-Cockpit at $1,439, including fibreglass race sets. With over 100 epic products, including racing simulators and accessories, you are sure to find a way to immerse yourself or play with mates and make an event of it. For the true super fan of racing, Trak Racer can emulate that experience in your own home, ushering in a new age of competitive, virtual motorsports that is already upon us. Formula 1 and all the bigname races will return to our tracks. Until then, a virtual supercar like Trak Racer’s impressive array of sim rigs and accessories, like a wheel stand, sim racing frames, and our excellent fibreglass race seats, will dominate the racing world. And since Trak Racer’s debut in 2008, we have been in the pursuit of flawless engineering, reaching for greatness and consistently learning, developing and optimising. That is why Trak Racer is the pioneer of taking racing from the race tracks to our lounge rooms. Visit TrakRacer.com.au for more.

Australia’s most expensive car book revealed One of the rarest and most expensive new automotive books has been unveiled. Elfin: The Spirit of Speed is published in three editions, but it is the latest and last edition that is creating all the headlines.

Elfin: The Spirit of Speed Ultimate Edition is 704 pages long, weighs almost 20 kilograms (book and case), costs $2750 and is available to just five lucky enthusiasts. The book features incredible production values, with a specially made matching slipcase, heavyweight stock, ribbon bookmark modelled on the famous Elfin-made magnesium wheel, and is packed with rare historical photos, and specially commissioned photographic essays of every Elfin model produced between 1959 and 2012. Published by well-known automotive identity and one-time Elfin Sports Cars owner, Bill Hemming, and written by motoring journalist David Dowsey, Elfin: The Spirit of Speed captures the story of the South Australian marque founded by Garrie Cooper through the eyes of those who lived it. “David Dowsey took five years to write this book, interviewing over 50 people who were intimately connected with the Elfin story,” said Elfin Heritage Centre founder, Bill Hemming. “Members of Garrie Cooper’s family, employees, mechanics, designers, body-builders, and drivers – including Vern Schuppan, John Bowe, Kevin Bartlett, John McCormack and Larry Perkins – tell their stories in the unforgettable tale of the tiny Adelaide company which became the second largest racing car manufacturing business in the world.”

Elfin: The Spirit of Speed Ultimate Edition is packaged in a wood and aluminium presentation box complete with leather straps and a special presentation plaque cut from Vern Schuppan’s Elfin MR8A-C, which he campaigned in Australia and – in Can-Am specification – North America. Housed inside their own compartments is a signed and numbered copy of the book along with a selection of genuine Elfin Sports Cars bodymaking tools used by Garrie Cooper and body-maker and designer John Webb from the late 1950s through to the late 1970s. “I was lucky enough to visit Elfin employee John Webb in Adelaide one year ago and he gifted these tools to me. Later that night he had a heart attack and died. This unfortunate event has become part of the Ultimate Edition story and those lucky enough to purchase this book will have genuine tools used by Mr Webb and Garrie Cooper to build the aluminium versions of almost all the models constructed under Cooper’s ownership. It’s an incredible and unrepeatable story,” said Mr Hemming. Five Ultimate Edition packages have been made and only two remain available.

Elfin: The Spirit of Speed is available in Standard Edition, Limited Edition and Ultimate Edition versions and can be purchased only from the Elfin Heritage Centre and elfinspiritofspeed.com.au For further information and interviews contact: Bill Hemming (publisher) Ph: 0408 059 002 David Dowsey (author) Ph: 0419 361 122

TOP 60

DRIVERS

Who are the greatest drivers in the 60-year history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars? We rank the top 60 with an emphasis on best championship finishes, race-winning percentage and competitive longevity. Only drivers with top 10 championship finishes were considered, to emphasise championship performances over part-time or endurance campaigns. Also, results from the Bathurst 1000 and other endurance events were only factored in when they were part of the championship.

60. BARRY SETON

59. LAWRIE NELSON

Barry ‘Bo’ Seton is one of a number of drivers who are better known for their results in the Bathurst 500/1000 than the Australian Touring Car Championship. While he never won a race in the championship, his class performances in Ford Escorts and Capris netted him third outright in the championship in 1976, one of four top 10 championship finishes.

Lawrie Nelson raced in the championship for a 20-year period. He scored podium places as an outright contender with a Chrysler Valiant Charger in 1973 before switching classes to race Ford Capris in Group C and then Mustangs in Group A. It was in a Capri that Nelson finished fourth outright in the championship in 1977 and won a class race in 1979.

58. BOB HOLDEN

57. PETER MCLEOD

Bob Holden is one of the great stalwarts of the championship, in a career that lasted from the second single-race decider in 1961 to the start of the V8 era in 1993. Holden mostly raced in the lower classes, driving Ford Escorts and Toyota Sprinters in his own entry, with the quirks of the points system netting him second place in the championship in 1982.

Peter McLeod is better known for his Bathurst 1000 entries, including being part of the winning entry alongside Peter Brock in 1987, but he did make a number of appearances in the championship throughout the 1980s. Most notably, he finished third in the championship standings driving a Mazda RX-7 in his only full-time season in 1984. Despite irregular championship appearances, he often recorded top-five finishes when he did race with his own entry.

56. MICHAEL CARUSO

55. CAMERON MCCONVILLE

Michael Caruso is one of many Garry Rogers Motorsport graduates. Caruso won a race for the team but didn’t break into the top 10 in the championship. A move to Nissan Motorsport (Kelly Racing) netted another win and 10th in the standings, the highest-placed Nissan entry in three seasons. Caruso was often on par with the results of teammate Rick Kelly, and is considered to be a driver who should still have a full-time drive.

Cameron McConville’s single-event stint filling in for the injured Craig Lowndes at the Holden Racing Team in 1999 marked the one time he was with a leading team. He did win a race with Garry Rogers Motorsport and made it into the top 10 in the championship, though he was often with uncompetitive teams.

54. STEVEN ELLERY

53. DAVID BESNARD

One of the most successful privateers of the V8 era finished in an impressive ninth place in the championship in 2001, defeating a number of entries from bigger teams in the process. Ellery won a race a season earlier in 2000 and finished on the podium at Bathurst with his own entry in 2003, continuing to defy expectations with his privately-run team.

David Besnard scored a win in the Queensland 500 endurance event and finished in the top 10 in the championship with Stone Brothers Racing in 2002, the highlight of his full-time career in the category. He also enjoyed a solid stint as an endurance codriver with consecutive podium finishes at the Bathurst 1000 in another stint with Stone Brothers Racing.

ACTIVE YEARS: 1994–2008 TEAMS: Steven Ellery Racing (1994–1996, 1999–2004), Longhurst Racing (1997), Holden Young Lions (1998), Dick Johnson Racing (1999), Triple Eight Race Engineering (2005), Paul Morris Motorsport (2006–2007), Garry Rogers Motorsport (2008) CHAMPIONSHIP BEST: 9th (2001) WINNING PERCENTAGE: 0.36%

52. PAUL DUMBRELL

51. TOMAS MEZERA

Paul Dumbrell stepped up to a new level in the championship just as his off–track commitments drew him away from a fulltime drive. He scored a maiden race win on his way to ninth in the championship in 2010, his penultimate full-time season. He became a starring co-driver at Triple Eight Race Engineering and added to his winning tally, most notably at Bathurst in 2012.

Tomas Mezera’s stint with the Holden Racing Team coincided with its early-year growing pains. Nevertheless, he finished fifth in the championship in 1995 at the end of his four-year stint with the team, going on to record solid results for his own entry and then as an endurance co-driver. Mezera amassed five podium finishes over his championship career, though he didn’t break through for a win.

48. LEE HOLDSWORTH

47. WAYNE GARDNER

Lee Holdsworth is one of many drivers to have been given his break at Garry Rogers Motorsport, taking over from Garth Tander as the team’s leading entry during a seven-year spell. He scored wins and four consecutive top-10 championship finishes for the team, with an opportunity to repeat those achievements with Tickford Racing.

The motorcycle grand prix world champion moved into the Australian Touring Car Championship at the start of the V8 era and was amongst the rough and tumble, initially with the Holden Racing Team before setting up Wayne Gardner Racing, with which he finished in the top 10 in the championship on three consecutive occasions.

46. JASON BARGWANNA

45. TIM SLADE

Jason Bargwanna scored a Bathurst 1000 victory alongside Garth Tander in 2000 and helped Garry Rogers Motorsport become a contending team in the category. Bargwanna claimed race wins and two top-10 championship finishes for the team, also getting into the top 10 with Larkham Motor Sport.

An underrated driver of the modern era who is unlucky not to have a full-time drive this season. Tim Slade’s stint with Stone Brothers Racing saw him claim an impressive top-five finish in the championship in 2012, before the sale of the team to Erebus Motorsport. He scored two consecutive race wins for Brad Jones Racing, though couldn’t break into a contending team.

44. STEVEN JOHNSON

43. CHARLIE O’BRIEN

Steven Johnson took over the #17 Dick Johnson Racing entry from father Dick Johnson in 2000, claiming his best finish in the championship a season later. Dick Johnson Racing was rarely a contender in the second-generation racer’s stint as a full-time driver, though Johnson did score three wins and regular top-10 championship finishes.

Charlie O’Brien won a race in a privately-entered Holden Torana in his full-time rookie season in 1976. Podiums with various teams and a top-five finish in the championship followed, though his outings in the category were limited. A podium in a privately-entered BMW 635 CSi after a six-year absence posed the question of what could’ve been.

ACTIVE YEARS: 1994–2014 TEAMS: Dick Johnson Racing (1994–1995, 1998–2012, 2014), Alcair Racing (1997), Erebus Motorsport (2013) CHAMPIONSHIP BEST: 5th (2001) WINNING PERCENTAGE: 0.7%

42. PAUL RADISICH

41. STEVEN RICHARDS

Paul Radisich made a name for himself in European Super Touring in the early 1990s before a move to Australia at the end of that decade, scoring impressive results for Dick Johnson Racing. There were some other standout performances, including a top 10 for Briggs Motor Sport ahead of the Triple Eight Race Engineering takeover, before injuries ended his career prematurely.

Steven Richards followed in the footsteps of his father Jim Richards in winning multiple Bathurst 1000s, though championship success eluded the second-generation racer. His five-year stint with Perkins Engineering produced the best results, before he settled into the role of co-driver and added to his Bathurst tally.

ACTIVE YEARS: 1999–2008 TEAMS: Dick Johnson Racing (1999–2002), Briggs Motor Sport/ Triple Eight Race Engineering (2003–2004), Team Kiwi Racing (2005–2007), HSV Dealer Team (2007–2008) CHAMPIONSHIP BEST: 4th (2000) WINNING PERCENTAGE: 3.47%

40. FABIAN COULTHARD

39. TODD KELLY

Fabian Coulthard had a challenging start to his championship career with part-time stints at Tasman Motorsport, Team Kiwi Racing and Paul Morris Motorsport. Podiums for the unfancied Paul Cruickshank Racing proved the turning point, eventually leading to Brad Jones Racing, where he won multiple times and became the team’s most successful driver. He’s added to his tally at DJR Team Penske with a best of third place in the championship.

Todd Kelly wasn’t in the right team at the right time in an era when Holden had an abundance of talent for its various factorybacked outfits. His high point came in 2005 with a win in the Bathurst 1000 alongside Mark Skaife and fourth in the championship. A move to the declining Perkins Engineering and the pressure of team ownership at Kelly Racing saw him fall down the grid in his final seasons.

38. DAVID REYNOLDS

37. ALAN JONES

David Reynolds thrived following a move to Ford Performance Racing in 2012, after struggling to get a break at factory team Walkinshaw Racing and an unhappy stint at Kelly Racing. Reynolds took race wins and third in the championship in his final season with the team in 2015, carrying that form into Erebus Motorsport, where he helped lift the team into a genuine front-runner. With a long-term deal at Erebus Motorsport, Reynolds looks set to continue his run of challenging bigger teams for race wins.

The Formula 1 world champion made an immediate impression when he committed to the championship on a full-time basis in 1990, scoring podiums in a Ford Sierra RS500 and BMW M3 in the Group A era. He entered the V8 years as Glenn Seton’s offsider, keeping his teammate honest and ensuring a Glenn Seton Racing one-two in the championship in 1993. He continued to be a threat upon setting up his own team from 1996, though he couldn’t match the results he achieved from 1993 to 1995.

36. JOHN HARVEY

35. CHAZ MOSTERT

The loyal Holden Dealer Team number two made the most of irregular appearances in the championship, highlighted by a race win and third in the championship in 1979. Starting out in privately-entered Austin Coopers in the single-race championship deciders, John Harvey was a podium challenger when he did race for the Holden Dealer Team in the 1970s and 1980s, often in more of a development or supportive role. It’s a case of what could’ve been had he entered on a more regular basis or moved on to another team.

Chaz Mostert looked on course for a championship challenge in 2015 before a massive accident at Bathurst ruled him out for the rest of the season. The title tilt followed a mercurial rise, winning a race in his rookie season with the underfunded Dick Johnson Racing team in 2013 and then moving on to the factory-backed Ford outfit and winning multiple races. A move to Walkinshaw Andretti United for 2020 represents an opportunity to build a team around him and fight for more championships.

ACTIVE YEARS: 1965–1986 TEAMS: John Harvey (1965–1966), Bob Jane Racing (1972), Holden Dealer Team (1976–1986) CHAMPIONSHIP BEST: 3rd (1979) WINNING PERCENTAGE: 4.25%

34. JIM MCKEOWN

33. LARRY PERKINS

After five seasons (four in the single-race championship deciders and one in the multi-round format) in Ford Cortinas, Jim McKeown switched to the Porsche 911S in 1970 and finished second in the championship. McKeown climbed into second place following two late-season wins, continuing his strong form by scoring podiums and fourth in the championship up against a number of more powerful muscle cars in 1971. His ability to overcome that horsepower deficiency and challenge for race wins made him an underrated driver of his era.

Larry Perkins is the first to admit he focused on the Bathurst 1000 more than the championship. Nevertheless, the six-time Bathurst 1000 winner produced some great drives in the championship, including in often uncompetitive Holden Commodores during the Group A years. But it was with his own Perkins Engineering team in the V8 era that Perkins enjoyed his best results, with five consecutive top-five placings in the championship between 1994 and 1998.

32. ALLAN GRICE

31. WILL DAVISON

Allan Grice famously won the 1986 Bathurst 1000 in a privateer entry. The best he could manage in his championship career, spent mostly in privateer entries, was third place in 1975. Despite often missing rounds due to other racing commitments or limited opportunities, Grice still won races across eight seasons as a challenger to better funded rivals.

Will Davison often seemed to be at the right team at the wrong time, after making a name for himself in his full-time arrival with Dick Johnson Racing. Davison won races with five different teams, in a variety of cars from factory-backed Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores to Erebus Motorsport’s Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, including Bathurst 1000 wins with the Holden Racing Team and Tekno Autosports.

30. TONY LONGHURST

29. JASON BRIGHT

Tony Longhurst was one of the stars of Group A, particularly in 1991 and 1992 as the nearest competitor to the all-conquering Nissan Skylines of Jim Richards and Mark Skaife. He also produced more impressive results as an underdog in the V8 era with top-10 championship placings with his own team in 1997 and 1998, going on to win the Bathurst 1000 as a co-driver to Mark Skaife in 2001.

Jason Bright suffered the same fate as Will Davison with unfortunate moves, enjoying his best spell with the Holden Racing Team and Paul Weel Racing between 2001 and 2004. His decision to race for his own team, Britek Motorsport, took him out of contention, though he showed his skill with wins for Brad Jones Racing.

28. KEVIN BARTLETT

27. GEORGE FURY

Kevin Bartlett was on the grid for the first Australian Touring Car Championship in 1960, and scored a top-three finish in the singlerace decider in 1966. But it was in the 1980s that Bartlett made a lasting impression on the championship with his four-year stint driving the Chevrolet Camaro Z28, finishing runner-up in 1980. His diversity is reflected in scoring podiums in cars as different as the Camaro, an Alfa Romeo GTA and a Mitsubishi Starion.

George Fury followed Nissan in its move from rallying to touring cars in the 1980s, putting the Japanese manufacturer on the map with impressive performances at the Bathurst 1000 and in the championship. Fury claimed runner-up finishes in the championship with the Bluebird in 1983 and Skyline in 1986, while also scoring podium finishes in all eight seasons entered, including in a one-off appearance in a Ford Sierra in 1990.

26. GREG MURPHY

25. DAVID MCKAY

Greg Murphy is considered the best driver never to win the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars title. One wonders what could’ve been had Craig Lowndes not returned to the category in 1998, forcing Murphy out of the Holden Racing Team ahead of its winning run. Murphy’s best days were with Kmart Racing, with two runner-up placings in the championship and two Bathurst 1000 wins.

Ranking David McKay in comparison with other drivers is extremely difficult considered he made just one appearance in the Australian Touring Car Championship, winning the singlerace decider at the Gnoo Blas Motor Racing Circuit in 1960. McKay was driving one of the three Jaguar Mark 1s on the grid that day, defeating Bill Pitt by six seconds to claim the inaugural title. McKay went on to a career in team management and journalism, with his racing record, including his touring-car success in the 1960 championship decider, reflecting his ability behind the wheel.

24. ROBBIE FRANCEVIC

23. BILL PITT

Robbie Francevic scored five race wins and a championship in the Volvo 240T, overcoming tensions within his team to win the title in 1986. The dissolution of the Volvo Dealer Team left Francevic on the sidelines, with only three more outings in the championship following his title win. Nevertheless, the New Zealander’s performances in the Volvo 240T against stiff opposition made him a worthy champion.

After narrowly missing out on the first Australian Touring Car Championship win in 1960, Bill Pitt made amends with victory in 1961. Pitt finished in the top two in all three of his outings in the single-race championships, missing out on victory in 1960 with an early-race spin and in 1962 with a mechanical problem. Pitt is another driver that’s difficult to rank given his limited outings, but he was a contender for the win in all three races entered.

22. RICK KELLY

21. JAMES COURTNEY

Rick Kelly climbed through the ranks at Holden and scored two victories in the Bathurst 1000 alongside Greg Murphy before championship success with the HSV Dealer Team in 2006. His decision to race for the family-run Kelly Racing deprived him of the chance to challenge for more championship wins, though multiple race wins in customer Holden Commodores and with the Nissan Altima were arguably just as impressive as his earlier success. Now with a Ford Mustang, he’s one to watch for the remainder of the current season.

James Courtney arrived in the championship with a lot of hype following success racing in various categories overseas. After a challenging time with Stone Brothers Racing, he shone at Dick Johnson Racing and took a surprise championship win in 2010. His time with the Holden Racing Team coincided with the team’s decline, but he still managed wins in five of the nine seasons in that period with the chance to challenge again at Tickford Racing in 2020.

20. RUSSELL INGALL

19. JOHN BOWE

After four runner-up finishes, Russell Ingall finally broke through for a championship win with Stone Brothers Racing in 2005. With a title win achieved, Ingall released the shackles and went back to his ‘enforcer’ ways in a career that lasted for two decades.

John Bowe emerged from the shadows of long-time teammate Dick Johnson to win a championship for Dick Johnson Racing in 1995, while also notching up four runner-up finishes. A move away from the team resulted in a slide in results, though there were flashes of his true talent.

18. COLIN BOND

17. MARK WINTERBOTTOM

The Holden Dealer Team protégé, alongside Peter Brock, won a championship for the team in 1975. His results in the Alfa Romeo GTV6 and Ford Sierra RS500 in the later years of his championship stint were just as impressive, in a varied career that included wins in rallying and sportscars.

Mark Winterbottom scored a long-awaited championship win for what was then known as Prodrive Racing Australia in 2015. In addition to a Bathurst 1000 victory, he was often the main challenger to Triple Eight Race Engineering and Jamie Whincup with seven top-three placings.

16. GARTH TANDER

15. SHANE VAN GISBERGEN

Garth Tander elevated the Garry Rogers Motorsport team into championship contention. A move to the factory Holden setup netted a much-deserved championship win with the HSV Dealer Team in 2007, though the Holden Racing Team’s fall set him back in his later years.

Following some remarkable performances for Team Kiwi Racing, Stone Brothers Racing and Tekno Autosports, Shane van Gisbergen fulfilled his potential with a championship win for Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2016. He’s now entering his prime with a long-term deal with the team.

14. BOB MORRIS

13. MARCOS AMBROSE

Bob Morris achieved one of the great underdog championship wins when he defeated Holden favourite Peter Brock in 1979, off the back of a second runner-up placing for the privateer Ron Hodgson Motors. A race win in a one-off outing in 1984 marked the end of a remarkable career.

Marcos Ambrose dominated with the Ford BA Falcon between 2003 and 2004, the highlight of a five-year stint with Stone Brothers Racing. We can only guess what more he could have achieved if he didn’t move to race in NASCAR in what would’ve been his prime years though, with his second coming in Supercars failing to live up to expectations.

12. NORM BEECHEY

11. GLENN SETON

Norm Beechey is in the history books as the first championship winner with a V8-powered car (Ford Mustang in 1965) and Australian-made car (Holden HT Monaro GTS350) in 1970. He also had three other top-three placings, though he sometimes lost out by being in uncompetitive cars, which was amplified in the singlerace championships. One of the most spectacular drivers of his era, Beechey retired suddenly in 1972. He was another driver who should have won more with more time in the championship.

Glenn Seton may be remembered for missing out on a win at the Bathurst 1000, but his championship record is the envy of other drivers with two title wins for his own team in 1993 and 1997, three runners-up finishes, 40 race wins and a 12-year run of top-10 championship placings.

America beckons, but his racewinning stint with Garry Rogers Motorsport and championship-winning run with DJR Team Penske that’s netted an impressive winning percentage sees him ranked alongside the greats.

Scott McLaughlin made an immediate impression in the championship with top-10 finishes in his first races as a co-driver for Tekno Autosports in 2012 and winning races in his full-time rookie season with Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2013. It was with Garry Rogers Motorsport and its Volvo Polestar S60 that McLaughlin took the next step in his career, winning races and becoming a qualifying master. A move to DJR Team Penske in 2017 saw the New Zealander become an immediate championship contender, narrowly missing out on the title in that season but 44

outfits. A return to the factorybacked Holden team resulted in a second championship win in 1978 and then a third and final title in the first season running the Commodore in 1980. While some suggest Brock’s success can only be attributed to the support he received from Holden, consider his

performances following his split from Holden in the BMW M3 and Ford Sierra from 1988 to 1990, which included round wins and a second and third in the championship, and his competitiveness till his fulltime retirement in 1997. He is a championship as well as endurance great.

Engineering in 2005. But Lowndes didn’t win a title with the latter, finishing runner-up six times and playing second fiddle to teammate Jamie Whincup. Lowndes, like mentor Peter Brock, will be best remembered for his endurance

record with seven wins at the Bathurst 1000. Despite that, his stint with the Holden Racing Team remains one of the most dominant in the history of the championship with his longevity highlighted by his second place in the all-time wins’ list.

Peter Brock’s endurancerace record stands above the competition – nine Bathurst wins including two sets of three-peats, plus nine wins at Sandown – and overshadows his championship record. His championship career started with a second placing in 1973, going one better in 1974 before a split with the Holden Dealer Team that led to a threeyear stint driving for privateer

Craig Lowndes stormed into the championship with a record-breaking run to the title in his rookie season in 1996. After a year spent racing in Formula 3000 in Europe in 1997, Lowndes returned to the Holden Racing Team and won championships in 1998 and 1999. With three championships won from three attempts, Lowndes seemed destined to rule for years to come. However, a move from Holden to Ford resulted in lean years at Gibson Motorsport and Ford Performance Racing before a switch to Triple Eight Race SUPERCAR XTRA

championship success with multiple championships across two manufacturers is arguably more impressive. He played an instrumental role in the development and rise of the BMW and Nissan teams and is without doubt the greatest driver of the Group A era between 1985 and 1992.

The famed entrepreneur was one of the most dominant drivers in the 1960s and into the early 1970s, running his own entries to multiple championship wins. Jane won back-to-back championships in a Jaguar in the single-race deciders in 1962 and 1963. He added to his tally and once again scored back-to-back titles with dominant championship seasons in his Chevrolet Camaro in 1971 and 1972, overcoming fellow greats such as Ian Geoghegan and Allan Moffat in the process. There could have been more championship wins had Ford provided consistent support to Allan Moffat Racing throughout the 1970s and had the end

of Group C not cut short his stint with Mazda in the mid 1980s. But Moffat’s winning percentage shows how dominant he was in his day.

in the championship spent in single-race deciders, it’s hard to rank Geoghegan against the drivers that followed. However, his level of domination

between 1966 and 1969, including the latter in a competitive multi-round season, confirms his place as one of the all-time greats.

Allan Moffat became an Australian household name and Ford hero for his exploits at Bathurst. But his championship record is a match for his Bathurst 500/1000 tally, winning four of each. After starting out driving Lotus Cortinas and Ford Mustangs, Moffat scored his first championship win with the XY Falcon in 1973. From 1976 and 1977, Moffat was at his peak with consecutive championship wins. Moffat proved his versatility with his performances in the Mazda RX-7 from 1982 to 1984, scoring another title in 1983.

Geoghegan would really dominate with the Ford Mustang from 1966, scoring four consecutive championship wins, including the first multiround championship in 1969. He remained competitive into the 1970s with top-five championship finishes and a famed win over Allan Moffat at the Bathurst Easter meeting in 1972. With the majority of his time

1989, claiming back-to-back titles with the Ford Sierra RS500. He added to his winning tally with the Falcon in the V8 era, remaining competitive until his full-time retirement in 1999. Johnson defeated his great rival Peter Brock in their

head-to-head championship battle in 1981 and mastered very different cars in the Falcon and Sierra. His winning percentage is lower due to the number of races in his latter seasons, but his run of success in the 1980s puts him in the top three.

into the pack in following seasons, with the burden of team ownership, he added more wins in his final fulltime campaigns and as an endurance co-driver, bringing his Bathurst 1000 tally to six wins. Skaife raised the bar with his determination and

professionalism during his Holden Racing Team reign, becoming the template for the modern driver. By defeating the likes of Jim Richards and Craig Lowndes in equal machinery and with a level of domination rarely seen, Skaife ruled one of the most competitive eras.

Following an early stint with Holden, Dick Johnson became synonymous with Ford with five championship wins across two different sets of regulations in the 1980s. Johnson won the championship with his own team in 1981, following the heartbreak of crashing out of Bathurst in 1980. Further titles followed in 1982 and 1984, in the final years of Group C. After two seasons in the uncompetitive Group A Mustang, Johnson proved unstoppable in 1988 and

A second title with the team in a Holden Commodore followed in 1994, though it was with the Holden Racing Team that Skaife emerged as a dominant force. Skaife defeated teammate Craig Lowndes to the title in 2000 and then went on a remarkable run of success with crushing championship wins in 2001 and 2002. Though he would fall back 48

Active years: 2002–2020 Teams: Garry Rogers Motorsport (2002–2003), Perkins Engineering (2004), Tasman Motorsport (2005), Triple Eight Race Engineering (2006–2020) Championship best: 1st (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017) Winning percentage: 23.89% It’s remarkable to think that the greatest of all time in terms of statistics and this ranking struggled in his rookie full-time season with Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2003 and was let go by the team at the end of the campaign. Following an endurance co-driver stint with Perkins Engineering, Tasman Motorsport plucked Whincup from the scrapheap in 2005, and he rewarded the team with podiums. Whincup was then handpicked by Roland Dane to join Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2006, making an immediate impact with a debut victory at

the Adelaide 500 and partnering Craig Lowndes to three consecutive Bathurst 1000 wins. Though Lowndes took the spotlight in those three Bathurst 1000 victories, Whincup got the better of his more experienced teammate in the championship, toppling Lowndes in each season from 2007 to 2014. Whincup amassed a record-breaking tally of six championship wins between 2008 and 2014. And it could have been seven in a row with a two-point defeat in 2007 and a 65-point loss in 2010, the former due to a disqualification for a technical infringement and the latter due to unreliability in the team’s first year running Holden Commodores. A seventh title in 2017 showed that Whincup could keep up the fight against new threats in Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen, extending his run of top-five finishes in the championship

(just once outside the top three) to 13 seasons. While his critics will say Whincup has done all his winning at Triple Eight Race Engineering during its dominant run, the fact is he consistently got the better of Lowndes and has matched van Gisbergen with the same equipment; two of the most naturally-talented drivers of the modern era. And he’s done so within the most competitive era of the championship with the cars so evenly matched. The stats don’t lie with the record for most championships, race wins, podiums and pole positions. And his winning percentage, from an era of so many races and after two winless seasons in his first two years in the championship, is a match with the other multiple champions. Whincup stands atop the list of best drivers from the first 60 years of the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars, with time to add to his tally.

MAKES 10 ALFA ROMEO

The Italian make scored a single Australian Touring Car Championship race win with Ray Gulson’s class victory in his Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV at Oran Park Raceway in 1974. Alfa Romeo was also a class contender with Colin Bond and his GTV6 in the early years of Group A in the mid 1980s.

PORSCHE

Porsche was one point shy of winning the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1969 and four off in 1970. Jim McKeown won two races with his Porsche 911S in the latter season, the only two victories for the German make in its brief appearance in Australian touring cars.

7

8 MAZDA

Mazda had a brief but significant stint in the Australian Touring Car Championship in the early 1980s. Allan Moffat won the title in the rotary-powered RX-7 in 1983, the first championship win for a Japanese manufacturer, claiming race wins across three seasons. 50

VOLVO

Volvo enjoyed two successful spells in Australian touring cars. Robbie Francevic won the title with the 240T in 1986, though the Volvo team soon disbanded. Volvo teamed up with Garry Rogers Motorsport from 2014 to 2016, taking multiple wins with Scott McLaughlin.

6 JAGUAR

Jaguar won the first four Australian Touring Car Championships from 1960 to 1964. The Mark I that won the first two titles was superseded by the Mark II in 1962. Jaguar locked out the top-three places in the title deciders between 1960 and 1962.

4 BMW

BMW arrived in the Australian Touring Car Championship in the early 1980s. But it was under the Group A rules from 1985 that the German make became a force with two championship wins with Jim Richards in 1985 and 1987.

2 FORD

Ford had the early running on rival Holden, dominating the Improved Production era with the Mustang. The Falcon traded championship wins with the Torana and Commodore under the Group C and V8 rules, while the Sierra had a dominant spell in Group A. The Blue Oval has 26 championships to Holden’s 21, but Ford significantly trails Holden in terms of race wins partly due to inconsistent support.

5 CHEVROLET

Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL-1 was the car to beat in the final years of the Improved Production era, with Bob Jane winning back-to-back titles in 1971 and 1972. Chevrolet was also a contender in Group C, courtesy of Kevin Bartlett and his Camaro Z28.

3 NISSAN

Nissan is the most successful non-Ford and Holden manufacturer with 31 race wins across three eras, Group C, Group A and Supercars. The Japanese make hit its peak in the final years of Group A, winning three consecutive titles with the Skyline BNR32 GT-R between 1990 and 1992.

1 HOLDEN

By the time Holden won its first championship in 1970, Ford had already claimed six titles. But Holden soon made up for lost time, matching Ford in the Group C years, losing ground in Group A and then winning 15 championships to Ford’s 12 in the V8/Supercars era. Entering 2020, Holden had 559 race wins to Ford’s 382, having enjoyed numerical supremacy in recent times. SUPERCAR XTRA

TEAMS 10 KMART RACING/HSV DEALER TEAM

The sister operation of the Holden Racing Team enjoyed its own dominant spell in the mid-2000s with consecutive Bathurst 1000 and championship wins. Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly ruled at Mount Panorama in 2003 and 2004, while Kelly and Garth Tander won the championship in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

87

STONE BROTHERS RACING

Brothers Jim and Ross Stone founded Stone Brothers Racing in 1998 and promptly won the Bathurst 1000. In terms of the championship, the Ford team won three consecutive titles with Marcos Ambrose and Russell Ingall from 2003 to 2005, dethroning the Holden Racing Team with the BA Falcon.

7

BOB JANE RACING

Bob Jane won four championships with his own team, with two backto-back runs across two different sets of regulations. Jane won with Jaguars under the Appendix J rules in 1962 and 1963 and then with Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1s in Improved Production in 1971 and 1972, overcoming a forced engine restriction in the latter. 52

9

GIBSON MOTORSPORT

Gibson Motorsport became a dominant force with the Nissan Skyline BNR32 GT-R between 1990 and 1992, winning three consecutive titles with Jim Richards and Mark Skaife. The team proved it wasn’t all down to the controversial Group A beast, going on to win the championship with a Holden VP Commodore in 1994.

6 TOTAL TEAM

Ian Geoghegan and his Total Team outfit won the title under the Appendix J rules with a Ford Cortina. But it was under the Improved Production era with the Mustang that the team stepped up to another level, winning four titles between 1966 to 1969. It was the first dominant run for a team in the championship, with its record of consecutive titles unbeaten for 30 years.

4 ALLAN MOFFAT RACING

Allan Moffat Racing was the leading Ford team in the first half of the Group C era, winning three titles in five years in the 1970s and adding another with Mazda in 1983. The team scored the same amount of championships (four) and race wins (38) as the Holden Dealer Team, though did so with inconsistent backing from Ford and with different makes.

2 DICK JOHNSON RACING/DJR TEAM PENSKE

Dick Johnson started his own team in 1980 and won the championship a year later in 1981. Dick Johnson Racing/DJR Team Penske holds the record for most championship wins with nine, including two in a row in 2018 and 2019 following the takeover by Team Penske. The team has survived multiple hardships, meaning it hasn’t challenged as consistently as its current rival, but it’s kept bouncing back and is once again the team to beat.

5 HOLDEN DEALER TEAM

The Holden Dealer Team may have had more success in the Bathurst 500/1000, but its championship record includes four titles between 1974 and 1980. Three of those titles were won by Peter Brock, culminating in the Commodore’s winning debut in 1980, with the team also claiming the championship following its split with Brock in 1975.

3 HOLDEN RACING TEAM

The Holden Racing Team was formed following the demise of the Holden Dealer Team and enjoyed more championship success than its predecessor. From 1996 to 2002, the factory Holden team won six championships, including a record five in a row between 1998 and 2002, before ownership wrangles ended its winning run.

1 TRIPLE EIGHT RACE ENGINEERING

British outfit Triple Eight Race Engineering arrived in Supercars in 2003. It didn’t take long to become a front-running team, challenging for the championship in 2005. Triple Eight has won eight championships with both Ford and Holden between 2008 and 2017, in addition to seven Bathurst 1000s. And in the seasons it didn’t win the championship, one of its drivers was runner-up. It’s the longest run of front-running form in the history of the championship. SUPERCAR XTRA

CARS 10 FORD XD FALCON

10

The privately developed Ford XD Falcon defied expectations when Dick Johnson took the car to consecutive championship wins in 1981 and 1982, following a career-defining race at Bathurst in 1980. The first iteration of the fourth-generation Falcon represented a big leap for Ford, with a new style for the new decade, defeating Holden’s recently introduced Commodore in the process to set up the Commodore versus Falcon battles that followed.

8 HOLDEN LX TORANA SS A9X

The final Torana gave the nameplate a fitting farewell following a decade of success in the 1970s. Peter Brock and Bob Morris won a championship each in 1978 and 1979 respectively, battling it out in closely fought final round deciders in both seasons. The A9X lost just two of the 16 rounds across those two seasons, making it the best-performing version of the Torana. 54

9 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL-1

The last of the great American muscle cars that dominated the Improved Production era won two championships in a row in the hands of Bob Jane in 1971 and 1972. The Camaro ZL-1 not only overcame the challenge of the Holden HT Monaro GTS350 and the Ford Mustang, including Ian Geoghegan’s championship-winning version and the Boss 302 of Allan Moffat, it won its second title despite an enforced engine reduction from seven litres to 5.7 litres.

FORD SIERRA RS500

The Ford Sierra RS500 was unbeatable over the course of 1988 and 1989 with Dick Johnson Racing teammates Dick Johnson and John Bowe finishing first and second in both seasons and the car losing just one of the 17 rounds in that two-year period. The turbo-charged rocket also won five of eight rounds in 1989, narrowly missing out on another championship.

6 HOLDEN VE/VE II COMMODORE

The VE Commodore was a significant departure for Holden, moving away from the previous line of Commodores with an exclusive Australian design. The VE and updated VE II ran from 2007 to 2012, winning three championships and coinciding with Triple Eight Race Engineering’s partnership with Holden. The Triple Eight-built VE II Commodores of 2011 and 2012 are considered the best cars of the Project Blueprint era.

4 FORD BA FALCON

Ford ended a barren run with Stone Brothers Racing’s Marcos Ambrose winning the title in the debut season of the BA Falcon in 2003, the start of a three-year run of success for the team and car. In terms of performance and also styling, it was a massive step forward from its underwhelming predecessor, the AU Falcon. It also set the groundwork for other successful Falcons, like the BF Falcon that followed.

2 HOLDEN VT/VX COMMODORE

The VX Commodore had a near-perfect record in its two years as the car being run by Holden’s leading teams, with the Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife claiming back-to-back championship and Bathurst 1000 wins in 2001 and 2002. A slight upgrade on the successful VT Commodore, which had won the three preceding titles, Skaife’s VX was labelled the ‘Golden Child’ with the combined might of the VT and VX resulting in a golden era for Holden.

5 HOLDEN VF COMMODORE

The VF Commodore is the most successful Holden with four championships and 108 race wins. The VF may have won more than any other Holden, but its longevity (six seasons) and the make’s numerical advantage over this period diminishes its stature. Even still, it has sentimental value as the last Australian designed Commodore and first under the Car of the Future regulations, in the most part getting the better of its Ford Falcon rival.

3 NISSAN SKYLINE R32 GT-R

The Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R was so dominant it accelerated the demise of Group A in the 1990s. The turbo-charged all-wheel-steer system was more sportscar than touring car. It was introduced at the end of 1990, helping Jim Richards score Nissan’s first championship win. The car was untouchable in 1991 and 1992, despite engine restrictions and weight penalties in the latter, proving to be the ultimate Group A racer.

1 1 FORD MUSTANG (IMPROVED PRODUCTION)

No other car has won as many championships, let alone in a row, than the Ford Mustang of the Improved Production era. Norm Beechey won the first title for the Mustang in 1965 before Ian Geoghegan won four in a row from 1966 to 1969. And it remained a competitive force in the final years of Improved Production up until 1972. Its level of domination, performance and classic styling set the bar in Australian touring cars. CIRCUITS 10 SANDOWN INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Sandown International Raceway has hosted more Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars rounds than any other circuit. The Dandenong Road corner at the end of the back straight is the focal point of the circuit. The combined horse racing and motorsport facility is not only steeped in history but is also one of the most accommodating for fans.

8

SYMMONS PLAINS RACEWAY

Symmons Plains Raceway may be the shortest circuit on the current Supercars calendar, but it makes up for it with plenty of character. The hairpin breaks up what is otherwise a fast circuit, which draws comparisons with a speedway-type layout. Only Sandown has hosted more Australian Touring Car Championship/ Supercars rounds.

7

AMAROO PARK RACEWAY

Amaroo Park Raceway hosted the championship over a two-decade period from 1974 to 1994 before closing soon after. The short but spectacular circuit featured great undulations with little margin for error, with the layout producing a natural amphitheatre for the big crowds in attendance.

SURFERS PARADISE STREET CIRCUIT

The Surfers Paradise Street Circuit first hosted IndyCar in 1991 and was included in the Supercars championship from 2002. The original layout was shortened in 2010, when Supercars became the headline act. The punishing street circuit is one of the toughest on the calendar, with Surfers Paradise’s stretch of beaches a stunning backdrop.

6 ADELAIDE STREET CIRCUIT

Adelaide set the standard for street-circuit marquee events when it debuted in 1999. The shortened version of the city/parkland circuit that hosted the Australian Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995 proved a great challenge to drivers, with Turn 8 soon becoming one of the most infamous corners in the championship.

4 LAKESIDE INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Lakeside International Raceway was a regular on the calendar from 1964 to 1998. The circuit was short yet fast, producing some of the greatest races in the history of the championship. The circuit, sitting on the banks of Lake Kurwongbah, is still operational but doesn’t meet the current requirements to host Supercars.

2 ORAN PARK RACEWAY

Oran Park Raceway hosted some of the greatest title deciders in the history of the championship. It was a fitting host for the season finales with the undulations of the circuit, including the unique crossover and bridge, making for great racing and attracting big crowds. It has been greatly missed since hosting its final round in 2008 and closing soon after.

5 PUKEKOHE PARK RACEWAY

Pukekohe Park Raceway became the first circuit outside of Australia to host the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars in 2001. The fast and flowing circuit on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand, was a welcome addition and popular with drivers. Upgrades and changes in 2013 did little to diminish the challenge of the circuit.

3 PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT

The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is considered one of the great race tracks in the world, though it is arguably better suited to motorbikes than cars. Nevertheless, the fast and flowing circuit is challenging for drivers and cars and is one of the most picturesque with Bass Strait as its backdrop. It’s been a regular host of sprint and endurance rounds.

1 MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT

The greatest race track in Australia is best known for the Bathurst 500/1000. But its championship history includes championship rounds in the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s before the Bathurst 1000’s inclusion in the title race from 1999. The stretch of road across the peak of Mount Panorama is the greatest challenge for drivers and is the heart and soul of Australian touring cars. SUPERCAR XTRA

Craig Lowndes won his third championship despite missing a round through injury following a huge crash at Calder Park. With the debut of the Adelaide 500 and inclusion of the Bathurst 1000 in the championship for the first time, big grids ushered in a new era for the category.

Dick Johnson and Peter Brock fought it out for the title with the championship decided in a thrilling head-to-head battle at the finale at Lakeside. Johnson overcame race-long pressure from Brock to win the race and the title on home soil.

Holden drivers Peter Brock and Bob Morris won seven of the eight rounds between them, with the title fight going down to the season finale in Adelaide. Morris prevailed to claim the title for the privateer over the factory-backed star, overcoming the disappointment of a narrow defeat to Brock in 1978.

A classic muscle-car battle saw the Ford Mustangs of Allan Moffat and Ian Geoghegan tussle with the Chevrolet Camaro of Bob Jane. The title was decided at the season finale at Oran Park with Jane scoring the race win and championship.

Four legends of the sport did battle for the championship, with the Nissan Skyline of Jim Richards beating the Ford Sierras of Dick Johnson, Peter Brock and Colin Bond to the title in the season finale at Oran Park.

Two sets of teammates engaged in a season-long battle that went down to the wire at Phillip Island. The HSV Dealer Team’s Garth Tander defeated reigning championship winner Rick Kelly and Triple Eight Race Engineering duo Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, with just two points separating Tander and Whincup.

James Courtney won the title in a dramatic finale in Sydney, overcoming Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom. The penultimate race of the season saw all three contenders crash into the wall in unison when a sudden downpour hit, leading to a race in pitlane to repair the damaged cars.

The first multi-round championship went down to the final race, with Alan Hamilton in a Porsche 911 almost snatching victory in the decider. When he was unable to pass an ailing Norm Beechey in the final stages, the title went to the Ford Mustang of Ian Geoghegan.

One of the most controversial championship deciders saw Rick Kelly crowned champion following a tangle with title rival Craig Lowndes in the final race of the season at Phillip Island. It followed on from an emotional Bathurst 1000 win for Lowndes over Kelly, in the wake of mentor Peter Brock’s passing.

A classic Ford versus Holden battle was decided on the final lap of the final race of the season in Newcastle when Scott McLaughlin tangled with Craig Lowndes, handing the championship to race winner Jamie Whincup. It marked the start of an intense rivalry between DJR Team Penske and Triple Eight Race Engineering. SUPERCAR XTRA

RACES 10 ADELAIDE STREET CIRCUIT 1999

The first Adelaide 500 marked the start of a new era for the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars, as the first marquee street-circuit event. The race itself delivered with Craig Lowndes winning the opening leg only to be demoted to the rear of the field for the second leg for tangling with a backmarker. The Holden driver then stormed through from the rear of the field to victory, in a race of survival.

QUEENSLAND RACEWAY 2001

A late rain shower led to a dramatic conclusion to the Queensland 500 in 2001. Paul Radisich led the race only to lose control of his Ford AU Falcon as the conditions worsened. A dramatic race ended with the leader in the gravel trap and the red flag being shown, handing Radisich and Steven Johnson the win ahead of a frustrated Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall, who were left as the leading car on the road but declared as runners-up.

7

8 ADELAIDE INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY 1983

The closest ever race in championship history saw Peter Brock defeat Allan Moffat in a drag race to the finish line. Brock’s Holden VH Commodore SS had the horsepower advantage and could power away on the straight, while Moffat’s more nimble Mazda RX-7 fought back in the twisty section. But the Commodore prevailed on the run to the line, giving Brock a crucial win the championship battle eventually won by Moffat.

MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT 1972

Allan Moffat and Ian Geoghegan engaged in an all-Ford race-long battle at the Mount Panorama Circuit. The Mustang of Moffat and Falcon of Geoghegan fought it out bumper-to-bumper over the course of the race, until Geoghegan’s car start leaking fuel. Moffat dropped back, undid his seat belts to see out of the driver’s side window and fought back in the closing stages only to lose by sixtenths of a second.

6 LAKESIDE RACEWAY 1981

The 1981 championship came down to a final round decider between Ford’s Dick Johnson and Holden’s Peter Brock at the former’s home circuit of Lakeside in Queensland. Johnson held off the Commodore of Brock in a race-long battle despite having a broken front anti-roll bar on his Falcon. He won the race by two-tenths of a second and the championship by eight points, in the greatest battle between the two greats.

4 SYMMONS PLAINS RACEWAY 1969

The 1969 championship, the first to be run over multiple rounds, was decided at the final race of the season in Tasmania. Ian Geoghegan and Alan Hamilton were the championship protagonists with Geoghegan seemingly out of contention after stalling and being disqualified for a push-start. Hamilton was in second place and closing in on an ailing Norm Beechey on the final lap, though Beechey held on by three-tenths of a second to deprive Hamilton of the title by one point.

2 NEWCASTLE STREET CIRCUIT 2017

A season-long battle between Triple Eight Race Engineering and DJR Team Penske was settled on the final lap of the final race in Newcastle. DJR Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin fought back from two penalties only to tangle with Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Craig Lowndes on the final lap and receive a third penalty. This handed the championship to race winner Jamie Whincup, in the most dramatic of title deciders.

5 MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT 2007

Rain once again caused havoc in the late stages of the 2007 Bathurst 1000, scattering the order and setting up a thrilling final stint. Mark Winterbottom, Mark Skaife, Russell Ingall and Jason Bright all fell foul of the conditions when in strong positions, leaving Craig Lowndes and Steven Johnson to fight it out for the lead. Lowndes and co-driver Jamie Whincup prevailed, while the battle for the podium places came down to a final-corner battle.

3 SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK 2010

The penultimate race of the season came alive with a sudden rain shower. The three championship contenders, Mark Winterbottom, Jamie Whincup and James Courtney, were leading when the conditions worsened, and they duly hit the wall simultaneously. The race then headed for pitlane with the respective crews rushing to repair the cars to get back out on track and score valuable points, with Courtney emerging from the pits to finish the race and winning the title the following day.

1 MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT 2014

The 2014 Bathurst 1000 had it all over the course of its seven hours and 58 minutes. A race stoppage helped set up a thrilling final stint, with Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris recovering from starting last place on the grid and an early-race accident to win with a last-lap pass on the out of fuel Jamie Whincup. It was the culmination of a race that had it all, with the first two cars across the line both having been in the wall earlier in the race, highlighting the drama of the day. SUPERCAR XTRA

CRASHES

10 MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT 2014

Former co-drivers Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff made unfortunate contact during practice at Bathurst. Brake failure sent Luff into a spin and contact with Lowndes as they approached Griffin’s Bend. Both Commodores suffered significant rear-end impacts with Luff ending up on his side and out of the event.

MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT 2008

Paul Weel had a lucky escape after he spun at the exit of Reid Park at Bathurst and was subsequently T-boned by Chris Pither. Thankfully, Pither just missed direct contact with Weel with the latter’s Commodore still suffering irreparable damage and forced out of the endurance classic.

7

87 PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT 2002

Jason Bargwanna made contact with fellow Holden driver Greg Murphy on the run to Turn 1 and was bumped into the tyre barrier along the front straight. The barrier pitched Bargwanna into the air in a frightening roll, thankfully avoiding being hit by a following car after landing the correct way up, minus a few wheels. 62

9

SANDOWN INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY 2017

Sandown’s Turn 6 (Dandenong Road corner) has been a hotspot for accidents, the biggest of which involved Todd Hazelwood and Jonathon Webb. The Holden drivers made contact, sending Hazelwood into the tyre barrier at such speed that he was vaulted into the air and landed on his roof, ripping panels from the car.

6 ORAN PARK RACEWAY 2000

Paul Morris collided with a slow-starting Larry Perkins and was left stranded on the grid, only to be hit hard up the rear by Mark Larkham. The huge contact ruptured Morris’ fuel tank with the fireball engulfing both cars. While Larkham escaped without injury, Morris needed assistance to get away from the flames due to pain in his back following the heavy rear-end collision.

4 BARBAGALLO RACEWAY 2011

Karl Reindler stalled on the grid and was collected by an unsighted Steve Owen, rupturing the former’s fuel tank and resulting in a huge and spectacular fireball. Reindler suffered minor burns while trying to free himself from his fiery Commodore, while Owen escaped without injury.

2 SURFERS PARADISE STREET CIRCUIT 2012

A number of the event’s international guests made a mess of their attempts to get off the line at the Gold Coast. A slow-starting James Hinchcliffe caused mayhem behind, with Vitantonio Liuzzi and Simon Pagenaud getting tangled up and a charging Ricky Taylor sent into a flip and ending up on his roof.

5 ADELAIDE STREET CIRCUIT 2014

Jason Bright was pitched into a horrific rollover after a restart in Adelaide. The restart featured the short-lived 60 km/h limit before the designated ‘Acceleration Zone’ rule, which bunched the pack heading into the first chicane. Bright walked away from the crash having rolled into the fence, in an accident that caused significant damage to his Commodore.

3 CALDER PARK RACEWAY 1999

Craig Lowndes suffered one of the most infamous barrel-rolls at Calder Park. The then reigning champion had bogged down at the start and was tipped into a spin as the pack bunched up, sending him onto his roof and into a series of rolls that ended on top of a tyre barrier.

1 SYMMONS PLAINS RACEWAY 2017

The biggest pile-up in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars occurred in wet conditions in Tasmania. Twelve cars were involved in the collision on the run to the Turn 3 hairpin, resulting in an estimated $5 million worth of damage. Brad Jones Racing had the misfortune of having three cars involved in the crash. SUPERCAR XTRA

THE F1 LEGENDS

AT THE MOUNTAIN

The recently departed Sir Stirling Moss is recognised as the best Formula 1 driver never to win the drivers’ world championship, but his illustrious career extended to many other categories, including an often forgotten appearance in the Bathurst 1000 alongside another legend of the sport.

J

ack Brabham and Stirling Moss teamed up to form arguably the most star-studded combination in the history of the Bathurst 1000. The Formula 1 greats drove a Holden LH Torana SL/R 5000 L34 in the endurance classic in 1976. But the Mount Panorama Circuit wasn’t kind to Brabham and Moss. As Allan Moffat and Peter Brock raced each other into Hell Corner, followed by Colin Bond, Bob Morris and the rest of the field, Brabham was left stranded on the grid with 50-odd cars on the charge behind him. It was almost inevitable that the Torana, adorned by a unique blue with gold ‘stitching’ paint scheme in honour of major sponsor Blues Union jeans, would be hit. Sure enough, the John Dellaca/ Terry Wade Triumph Dolomite slammed into the back of

Brabham’s stricken Holden. The Australian three-time Formula 1 world champion was racing seriously for the first time since retiring at the end of the 1970 season, while Moss had only competed in an historic event since a careerending crash at Goodwood in 1962. The car, which now resides in Bathurst’s National Motor Racing Museum, was perhaps lucky to make the race at all after the brakes failed at the end of Conrod Straight during practice. Travelling at around 260km/h, the car sailed past its current resting site and down the escape road, with Brabham skilfully bringing the car to a safe halt by throwing it into a spin. Nevertheless, Brabham qualified in the top 10, but the infamous start-line incident soon put paid to the pair’s challenge. Moss eventually got behind the wheel after a marathon three-hour repair job;

however, the team’s hard work amounted to nothing after the engine let go shortly after. Brabham had rarely raced at Bathurst, and the two heartbreaking problems ensured his relationship with Mount Panorama remained at that time distant. According to Brabham, the result may have been very different had the original plan been followed. “I enjoyed the experience, except that car wasn’t the one we were supposed to be driving in the race,” he said. “They were building a new car for us, which never got finished, so we had to drive the old car. That had its downfall, I can assure you. “The team had changed the gearbox just before the race start, and in those days you went straight onto the grid – there was no parade lap. I put it into first gear and it was in two gears – first and reverse, so the car was locked... I couldn’t move.

“As the flag was about to go up, I was fighting with the gear-lever and it came out of a gear and I thought, ‘Ah, that’s fantastic!’ “I dropped the clutch and the car went backwards, so I had no option but to sit there and put my hand out of the window. Of course, somebody way back at the end of the field didn’t see the car and ran straight into the back of us. “I was expecting somebody to run into me, but I thought by the time that bloke had arrived everybody would have known about it. But he came right at the end. I couldn’t believe it when he was coming down. I was watching the rear-vision mirror as he was coming down, and there was nothing I could do about it except brace myself for the accident.” The incident proved that even for Formula 1 legends, things don’t always go your way at Bathurst.

A powerhouse partnership at the 1976 Bathurst 1000.
