Cosmetic vs Plastic Surgeons: What is the difference and why is it important?

WITH THE POPULARITY OF COSMETIC PROCEDURES INCREASING, THERE ARE MORE AND MORE PRACTITIONERS OFFERING COSMETIC SERVICES, BUT BEFORE YOU DECIDE WHO TO SEE, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE CHOOSING FOR YOUR CARE AND IF THEY ARE RIGHT FOR YOU.

Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular in recent years, with many people seeking to enhance their appearance through various procedures. However, not all cosmetic surgeons are created equal, and it is important to understand the difference between cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons when considering undergoing a procedure.

So what is the difference? In Australia any doctor with a medical degree can refer to themselves as a cosmetic surgeon, as the term is not currently regulated. A plastic surgeon however, must have completed at least 12 years medical training and 5 years specialist training in order to use the term and be admitted to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Most doctors using the cosmetic surgeon title are medical professionals who have received training in various cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction. However, they are not trained in the more complex procedures that plastic surgeons specialise in.

Plastic surgeons have undergone extensive training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. This training includes a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, wound healing, and tissue reconstruction, which is essential for producing the best results in cosmetic procedures. Plastic surgeons are also required to keep up with the latest advancements in their field, which helps to ensure that they are providing the most effective and safe treatments available.

A plastic surgeon will also have the ability to handle any complications that may arise during a cosmetic procedure. For example, if a patient experiences a complication during a facelift, a plastic surgeon is better equipped to address the issue and provide the necessary care to ensure that the patient heals properly and still achieves a pleasing result. They are also trained in various techniques for performing cosmetic procedures, including minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic surgery and laser surgery which often offers faster recovery times.

Unfortunately, in recent times there have been many reports in the media about unscrupulous cosmetic surgeons, performing procedures outside their skill set and leaving patients with less than desirable outcomes.

So what are some things you should consider when making the choice to see a cosmetic or plastic surgeon for your procedure?

Dr Peter Widdowson, plastic surgeon at The Lotus Institute suggests doing plenty of research and getting to know your surgeon.

“Patients should do plenty of research before choosing their surgeon. Gather recommendations, check the qualifications of your surgeon and meet with them to discuss your procedure. There is no such thing as a silly question or asking too many. A good surgeon will welcome a thorough conversation with you about your care and the results you want to achieve.”
