Lionel Messi, the best football player at the moment and, according to many, of all times, should spend his summer holiday in Croatia! Unless something unexpected happens to Barcelona and Argentinian national team's number 10 at the end of the season, Messi will arrive to Sveta Nedjelja on the island of Hvar in July. The luxurious Santa Domenica Villa, owned by Slavko Gotovac, an entrepreneur from Kaštela, is has already been booked. This piece of information was confirmed by Gotovac when we called him on Thursday in the morning hours. - It’s true! His acquaintances contacted me and asked me if my villa was available for ten days in July. I told them that it was and now I'm just waiting for final confirmation - said Mr. Gotovac, sounding a bit surprised that we found out about Messi's arrival. He would not reveal the exact date of arrival to keep the high profile guest's privacy. He did the same last summer when he was the host for the Hollywood star George Clooney. Messi should arrive in the com-
pany of his family and they are supposed to be joined by Ivan Rakitić, his fellow player from Barcelona and Croatian national team's player, whose family and friendship ties often bring him to Split. In Gotovac's Villa, Messi and his company will not miss any of the luxuries they're used to as planetary popular stars. Villa "Sancta Domenica" is located right in the town of Sveta Nedjelja. It is a five-star accommodation with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, three toilets, a living room, dining room, kitchen with entrance hall, basement garage with six parking spaces, professional laundry and dry warehouse, wellness centre (includes Turkish bath, Finnish sauna, showers with special effects as well as a space for massage tables and daily rest). The villa also has a wine cellar and an area intended as a heliport. Its location is right by the sea, it has a beautiful garden, outdoor jacuzzi and a swimming pool, all of which guarantees a perfectly relaxing holiday. The villa also has its own sea access and an option for yacht mooring in a marina close by.

Tourist destination o welcome to the city of Zadar, a city of exceptional 3000-year-old history and particularly valuable cultural heritage, a city that will always continue to offer something new and original AUTHOR milena budimir
Some forty years ago the legendary film artist Alfred Hitchcock had already then said that the sunset in Zadar was „The most beautiful in the world“. Even today, in the European destination of the year, a flattering title that Zadar can brag about, all those who have enjoyed the spectacular view of the sunset and the sky accompanied by the sounds of the world famous Sea Organ and the magic lights of the Greetings to the Sun agree with him. Zadar is one of the most popular Croatian tourist destinations which even the London Times declared as “the centre of entertainment on the Adriatic”, and the Guardian as “Croatia’s new capital of cool”. The last great acknowledgement came from the portal "European best destinations" where, in the competition of 20 European cities, reader’s votes awarded

Split your week Split is not only a city museum but a place full of life that thrives among its historical layers AUTHOR Milena BUDIMIR
A week in Split gives you a chance to find out more about the city, become a bit absorbed by its spirit and get to know the surrounding areas filled with natural and cultural heritage wonders. Seven days enable you a more relaxed approach. Experience the city's vivid streets and squares and consider planning your stay in accordance with scheduled events. Summer is, of course, reserved for relaxation at Split beaches, which are among the cleanest on the Adriatic coast despite of the city's size. There are numerous options for taking one-day excursions. Trogir, another jewel on the UNESCO's Cultural Heritage List, is just a halfhour's drive from Split. Towns of Makarska, Omiš and the magnificent Solin, with the ancient Salona archaeological site and remnants from Croatian medieval kingdom times, are also close by. So is the town of Klis and its fortress which has become popular as one HBO's Game of Thrones series' filming locations.

touch!
The tow n of Šibenik, with its Jacob's Cathedral, a lso a UN ESCO Heritage Site, and Krka National Park, is also rather close to Split. However, to get to Croatia's most beautiful national park - Plitvička jezera, you will have to travel a bit more. There are many other towns around Split, such as Zadar, a town from the Antiquity period, which was Dalmatia's capital for centuries. There are also beautiful towns in Dalmatian hinterland, with recognisable gastronomy and cultural landmarks, such as Knin. Drniš, Imotski and Sinj. The latter is famous for its 300 years old Alka knight's tournament. Islands are another story altogether. The third UNESCO Heritage Site in Split-Dalmatia County, the Stari Grad Plain on the Island of Hvar, can be easily reached by ferry from Split. The Island of Hvar also boasts other priceless heritage sites, excellent wining and dining offer and rich nightlife. There is also the Island of Brač famous for Zlatni rat, the most beautiful beach on the Adriatic, and ancient quarries from which the stone used to build Diocletian's Palace was excavated. The Island of Vis, on the other hand, is famous for its wine, the most beautiful coves you can imagine and Blue Cave on the nearby Islet of Biševo.
Tip one You love adrenaline sports? No problem; you can go rafting on the Cetina, hiking on Mount Mosor and Mount Biokovo, mountain biking through endless terrains in the Dalmatian hinterland, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing...

East of the city centre is Bačvice beach, a few minutes’ walk of the ferry terminal. This simple crescent of sand and shingle is popular – and crowded – destination for locals and their guests. Bačvice is also the spiritual home of picigin, a game only played in and around Split, which works rather like a netless version of volleyball in the sea, involving a lot of acrobatic leaping around as players try to prevent a small ball from hitting the water. With several cafés and a couple of charming eating places inside, it’s a popular venue for after-dark drinking and feasting.

The day goes by Breakfast whether on board or on shore. After the breakfast depending where you are anchored, you could do some grocery shopping, swimming, sightseeing, fishing or simply preparing the boat for the trip to the next destination. When choosing the route consult the weather charts. Practice your tacking and jibing. However, if you are not such an adventurous type find some nice bay to anchor and enjoy your lunch in peace. Time until dinner can also be spent sailing if the weather permitting. However, a more relaxing option would be to enjoy the sun and the sea by sunbathing and swimming.

Paradox is absolutely the hit place in Split, and their tapas, helping portions of cheese with honey, jam, dry fruit and prosciutto are a regular quick dish with a glass of good wine. Even though Paradox does not serve regular tapas, the inhabitants of Split have decided to give these that name. - We are not a tapas bar, we serve 25, sometimes even 30 types of cheeses that come in various combinations. We also serve marinated anchovies, sweet bacon, duck breasts and similar, but people mainly like to eat cheese and prosciutto – says Zoran Pejović from Paradox who is, at the moment, running a successful Split restaurant called Paradigma. Pejović states that Paradox is not that young any more, they have been open for five seasons and guests have recognized their quality. - We have something specific. We present our food nicely, particularly the cheeses, and we inform each guest on the history of the served cheese, where it comes from and of what taste and tradition. Even though we have a number of imported cheeses, we mainly offer domestic ones, Dalmatian cheeses – adds Pejović and he also likes to eat tapas in Paradox.

We ask the owners, young Split entrepreneurs Nikola Matić and Dario Šunjić where the secret lies for such a success. - In the more than 80 pancakes we offer on our menu and which are not just a simple dessert but an entire meal. WINES Croatia is well known for great wines that receive awards all over the world. These are a few authentical sorts that you just have to try while in different Croatian regions AUTHOR SAŠA ŠPIRANEC
Wine is one of the most valuable elements of the Croatian tradition and gastronomic heritage. For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable component of both the daily routine and festivities. Over centuries, each Croatian wine region developed its own distinctive wine varieties that fully adapted to the climate, soil and expectations of their residents. When you find yourself in one of the wine regions of Croatia such as Dalmatia, Istria, Hilly Croatia or Slavonia, don’t forget to taste some of the wines favorite among the local population.

When in Istria, malvasia is the most important variety to try. A white wine full of freshness and pleasant aromas of ripe fruits, such as peaches and hints of blossoming acacias. In addition to this basic edition, malvasia can also be found in more ambitious forms after ageing for a long time and developing a co-mplex aromatic set.
In Dalmatia, it is plavac mali. This is the most important and the most represented red variety in Croatia. It yields soft, ripe and succulent wines when offered in a lower price range and originates from Dalmatian fields situated in ravines hidden in endless karst. On the
other hand, when it comes from steep slopes facing the sun and the sea, usually from islands or peninsulas such as Hvar, Brač and Pelješac, it gives powerful, warm, strong and ripe wines, perfectly reflecting the harsh conditions that created them with their richness and concentration.

When in Hilly Croatia, look for aromatic white varieties such as sauvignon blanc or Riesling (locally referred to as rajnski rizling). They also use many other varieties to make wine in the region, but what they all have in common are lively acids and a highly refreshing character. The wines of Hilly Croatia work ideally as an aperitif, refreshment in summertime, or to go with a light meal.

Slavonia and the Danube Region are an empire of graševina, the most important and represented white variety, but also a general type. Graševina is a good-time wine, and is ideal to go with your lunch. It is normally bold and refreshing with attractive aromas of apple, pineapple or citrus, and is offered at very affordable prices. Sometimes, when it comes from later harvests, it shows quite a different face and its aromas, such as meadow flowers and chamomile, become dominant in the riper, softer and richer flavor.

GRADELe or how to grill a fish
photos: shutterstock, željko grgić
LEARN ABOUT...
GRILL briefly The fish is quickly done, do not grill it too long because it will lose juiciness
do not place fish in the center of 'gradele' Always grill fish on the outer edges of 'gradele', and not in the middle of the grid because that point is very hot
prevent sticking DRY the fish and 'drown' it in olive oil to prevent sticking to the grid
be careful while turning Fish will easily fall apart if not carefuly turned over
is it over already? NOT TO RAW AND not too overdone that is the point. insert the fork into the flesh of fish. If the meat is easily separated - it is over.

This is the fruit of a longstanding family tradition. It is located outside the city crowds so you can enjoy your meal in peace and quiet. You can give way to a hedonistic relax during your vacation sipping premium Hvar wines. "I'd highly recommend this restaurant and would go as far as to say that it is now one of my favourite restaurants worldwide! The service is exceptional, the staff were fantastic and the food couldn't be beaten " - these are the comments you can find on the Internet.
The pleasant ambience of the restaurant has retained elements of tradition. This fish restaurant in the ramparts of the small port Foša built in the 16th century is a real connection of original Dalmatian and modern trends, equally in architecture and interior design as well as in gastronomy. Among the fresh seasonal food, characteristic for the Zadar climate, they prepare dishes that preserve the tastes of the old Dalmatian cuisine, but at the same time cherish the concept of healthy food.
When you ask what this restaurant offers, chef Ivo Močić will simply answer: Mediterranean food. The main course will cost you 110 kn, but you need not worry about the choice of wine. You can choose among 65 labels which cost about one hundred kunas a bottle while some bottles from 120-240 kn. They also offer a vegetarian menu and you will not make any mistake if you order the Šibenik steak and/or Šibenik risotto. You must try it!

It has been well preserved even though snapped at some points. These small snaps were probably caused by the friars when they carried the painting in a bag during their escape from Rama

Gaius Laberius The gravestone of a seven-year-old Roman boy Gaius Laberius, who holds a sphere in his hand decorated with a network of connected hexagons, a symbol of real leather beauty is considered to be from proof that the first football in Europe was played here in the Cetina region. It was found on the Tilurium archaeological site, in the locality of Gardun, and dates from the 2nd century. Today it is walled into the façade of a stone house in Vrlička Street in Sinj. The monument is 113 centimetres high and 46 centimetres wide. Roman soldiers and sons of distinguished persons played football in Gardun, but the game was originally Illyrian and the Delmats, an Illyrian tribe, played football much earlier than the arrival of the Romans army. This is also confirmed by the fact that nowhere in the Roman Empire, except for Gardun, no sample was found connected with this game.

Split's version of the Lisbon neighbourhood of Bairo Alto is located in Dosud, within the Diocletian's Palace Walls, where locals and tourists drink colourful cocktails, sweet rakias or wine while sitting on the steps where a string of bars and cafés is located. The oldest of these is "Ghetto", one of Split's rare fully LGBT friendly places, surrounded by high walls covered with greenery and artistic installations. This oasis for the open-minded where people come to warm up before hitting the clubs.

A two-floor club located next to the Firule Beach used to be a meeting place for rock music fans, but now offers pretty much something for everyone on different days of the week. If you would like to experience Croatian trash music, visit the club on Mondays. If you feel like listening to traditional Dalmatian music, it's on Wednesday nights, while weekends are reserved for open-air concerts of some of the most famous local bands and performers.
Traditionally, a mojito is a cocktail that consists of five ingredients: white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint. Main alchocol is rum.

For years, this has been one of the rare places in Split where you could tell for sure that it would be packed each Friday and Saturday. Dress to impress is the unwritten rule of the club, and no sports shoes rule is strictly followed. This is where you'll find all the beautiful women and handsome guys listening to house and r'n'b hits. In the early hours of the morning, though, you'll also find out that Croats like music with a more Balkan tone, too.

The story of Split is already 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near the great Roman city Salona, where he wanted to spend the last years of his life. Diocletian's Palace is among the best preserved monuments of the Roman building heritage in the world,. it is must see.
Sea Organ is situated on the western end of Zadar´s Riva, and can be observed as a differently shaped part of the coast which consists of several stairs that descend into the sea.The Greeting to the Sun is on Istarska obala, at the very end of the Zadar peninsula.
Šibenik is in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic Coast, in the picturesque and indented bay where the Krka River, one of the most beautiful karst rivers in Croatia enters the sea. Šibenik today extends along the 100 kilometre long coastline between the Zadar and Split Rivieras, extending up to 45 kilometres into the hinterland area, at the bottom of Dinara mountain..
Old City Walls – the old city walls of Dubrovnik encompass the entire old city and run unbroken for almost 2 kilometres. The walls are a symbol of the city and offer glorious views over the city and the Adriatic Sea.

The largest, the oldest and the most popular national park in Croatia boasts 16 lakes and numerous creeks and brooks. The park enjoys the protection of the UNESCO as natural heritage, due to its exquisite beauty of the woods and the bluegreens of the water which creates a special atmosphere. The Korana river, one of four Karlovac rivers, has its source in the area of Plitvice Lakes. The Korana has four waterfalls and flows toward the Golubinjača river. Five years ago the park recorded over a million tourists, an alltime high. The Tourist Board claims that the beauty of this natural pearl cannot be described with words – it has to be experienced first-hand.

City of Sinj
The Island of Hvar
The city of Sinj is located in the centre of the Dalmatian Zagora and the Sinj Alka has been taking place there since 1717. It is a spectacular knightly competition on horseback and one of the most attractive Croatian manifestations. Somewhat more to the north of Sinj is the picturesque Vrlika known for its impressive wheel dance without saying a word and music.
The Island of Hvar is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, with mild climate, numerous tourist attractions, cultural monuments, and plenty of wine and olives. Although it is detached from the mainland, everything is available on the Island of Hvar, and there is a feeling of mild isolation, which is exactly what some of us want on holidays.
