Tradition o n w a v es

A fleet of old wooden boats whose crews sail in honour of the fishermen from Komiža as well as in remembrance of the papal dinner on the beach, will this year be “strengthened” by two new boats AUTHOR Milena BUDIMIR

The Rota Palagruzona fleet will set sail with the renewed historical regatta of fishing boats on the Komiža - Palagruža route. The fishermen from Kom iža a re t he most well known and have rowed for centuries on their "falkusa" using the strength of their muscles and only sometimes the aid of their sails, rowing up to the 42-mile distant Palagruža, and fished pilchard, then salted them on the beaches of the offshore island and deposited them in their

barrels to then return home with their cargo, back to the island of Vis, bringing up numerous generations of islanders on this fish. Besides fishing, with the present Rota Palagruzona traditional boat regatta the historical regatta dating from June, 1593 is evoked, the occasion when the inhabitants of Komiža on their falkusa together with those from the islands of Hvar, Brač and Vis raced to Palagruža to arrive there safely accompanied then by the Hvar galleys. But their plan went wrong due to the strong south wind and the regatta had an alternative target – the volcanic islet of Brusnik at a distance of 12 miles from Komiža. The regatta ended on Brusnik, but history was not forgotten and sailing and rowing has been going on for six years on the Rota Palagruzona where another historical event is cherished – the papal dinner. Namely, in the 12th century, on 9 March, 1177 to be precise, the fishermen from Komiža hosted Pope Alexander III on the beach of Palagruža where the Pope was forced to make a stop on his journey to Venice due to a storm.

A tourist office on wheels As of this summer Rogoznica Tourist Board is the first in Croatia to have a Mobile Visitor Center. Rogoznica guests will be receiving tourist information wherever they are: on the beach, walk, or on a party. Mobile Visitor Center is an innovative Tourist Board project which will ensure that all of the dispersed villages in this family vacation county are covered with tourist information. The mobile tourist office will provide tourists and their hosts with necessary information, covering even the tiniest villages from Kanica to Zečevo. Rogoznica oldtimer already attracts a lot of attention, and this summer it will focus on interacting with visitors on social media. Photo shootings and prizes will promote the Rogoznica branded van, and subsequently the local offer. Rogoznica retro van will be managed by Petar – the wiry concierge of Rogoznica, and it will provide: free wi-fi, presentation pad, brochures of local tours, restaurants and services. Mobile info office will cruise the outskirts of Rogoznica and the county, inviting people to come and visit. Mobile Visitor Center activities will enable better communication with the town’s guests, as well as the local community, which allows an increase in both quality of service and overall satisfaction of guests. It was conceived as an innovative promotional tool communicating Rogoznica as an ideal family holiday destination. Active and innovative approach in providing all the necessary information to current and potential guests about the available facilities, activities, history and culture will help generate an increase in general guest satisfaction with holidays spent in Rogoznica

Practical advices

Due to its pleasant odour and curative properties, the Romans used it for their baths while the Greeks used it mostly for medical proposes. Its effectiveness in various difficulties is widely known and there is almost no home whose wardrobe is not protected by a small bag of lavender flower. It is a traditional medicine for the pacification and alleviation of insomnia and headaches, anxiety, depression, tension and stress.

Why is lavender so magical? 8

1

Mix a few drops of etheric lavender oil with olive oil which is an excellent combination for nurturing the body, hair and face, particularly after sunbathing. Add a few drops of etheric lavender oil to neutral oil (sesame oil), spread it over your temples and the back part of your neck to remove headaches and tension. Pour one litre of boiling water over four spoons of dry lavender flowers. Let it stay for five min-

Insect stings: place a drop or two of etheric oil directly over the sting.

When tired pour apple vinegar over two handfuls of lavender flowers and leave it under the sun. Filter after two weeks. It is used by taking deep breaths over it.

Split has joined the community of 450 world cities with Uber, a mobile service which causes regular taxi prices to drop wherever it is introduced. The service is called UberX and it enables professional drivers, operating via a company or a special craft licensed for providing vehicles with drivers to clients, to offer their services. Drives are paid for by a card and not with cash via the application and you will know an approximate price of the drive before the driver arrives. It basically works by connecting people who need to get from point A to point B with drivers who can provide the service. Uber prices in Split have already been made public. The starting price is 9 kuna and each following kilometre is paid an additional 5 kuna, with an extra 0.5 kuna added to the final amount for each minute of the drive.

A TAXI RIDE IN A FEW STEPS 1. Install Uber using iTunes, Google Play or Windows Store 2. Sign up, enter your email address, phone number and basic credit card data 3. When you need a ride, just open the application, choose your starting point and destination. 4. You will then see the closest vehicles and the approximate price of the ride. 5. Once you've confirmed the ride, you will see the driver's face, name, average rating as well as the vehicle type and registration table number. 6. After the service is provided, you will get a digital invoice with the route you took. You can also rate the driver and the driver can rate you as a passenger.

In the middle of everything Welcome to the city of Zadar, a city of exceptional 3000-year-old history and particularly valuable cultural heritage, a city that will always continue to offer something new and original AUTHOR Milena BUDIMIR

Some forty years ago the legendary film artist Alfred Hitchcock had already then said that the sunset in Zadar was „The most beautiful in the world“. Even today, in the European destination of the year, a flattering title that Zadar can brag about, all those who have enjoyed the spectacular view of the sunset and the sky accompanied by the sounds of the world famous Sea Organ and the magic lights of the Greetings to the Sun agree with him. Zadar is one of the most popular Croatian tourist destinations which even the London Times declared as “the centre of entertainment on the Adriatic”, and the Guardian as “Croatia’s new capital of cool”. The last great acknowledgement came from the portal "European best destinations" where, in the competition of 20 European cities, reader’s votes awarded Zadar with the title of Best European Destination 2016! And Zadar will capture you with its particular atmosphere and rich livelihood. In the summer Zadar hosts the Musical Evenings in St. Donatus, Zadar Summer Theatre, Contemporary Music Festival, KalelargArt - Street Art Festival, Zadar Dreams Urban Festival, but al-

so many other entertaining manifestations such as Night of the Full Moon, Millennium Jump or concerts by world music attraction. The biggest concert this summer will be given by the group Prodigy. But entertainment is only a small part of what Zadar offers its guests: a city of exceptional 3000-year-old history and particularly valuable cultural heritage, it is particularly attractive to cultural monument and cultural heritage lovers. A monument city surrounded by historical walls, Zadar is a real treasure house of archaeological, medieval and Renaissance monuments as well as numerous contemporary architecture achievements. Zadar offers its guests various tourist attractions: ideal accommodation, autochthonous gourmand delicacies cultural monuments, contemporary sports facilities and a variety of excursion programmes. It is enough to mention the archipelago with 24 bigger islands and around 300 smaller ones, three nature parks - Telašćica, Velebit and Lake Vrana and five national parks - Paklenica, Plitvice, Kornati, Krka and North Velebit which places Zadar and its surroundings at the very top of the tourist offer in Croatia.

On July 1, “Jazine Open Air” will host the legendary electro punk trio, and, by all odds, the most massive foreign musical hosting in the chronicles of the city. Exceptional interest for this grandiose opening of the summer season has been shown. Fans from all over the region have reacted well at the affordable price of the tickets for 220 kn. On the day of the concert, on Friday, July 1, the entrance will cost 250 kn. The group is now in the Chinese stage of their world tour and will slowly start for Europe among which dates is the Croatian date of July 1. The band

is bringing the biggest ever production to the city, and the complete equipment is coming from several European countries. The tour which is following the actual album “The Day Is My Enemy” is, according to the latest announcements, the last one in the career of this incredible band. Placing Croatia on its list was the big and expressed wish of the group for their 2013 performance has evidently left a vivid experience when 15,000 fans came to listen to them in “Jazine Open Air” and maybe this time they will be met in an even greater number.

DUBROVNIK WALK

Did you know? Less than a mile...

6

Chroniclers from England record that Anglo-Norman King Richard the Lionheart came to Dubrovnik in the autumn of 1192 after returning from the Crusades. He found shelter from storm near the island of Lokrum.

An orphanage founded in 1432 as part of St. Claire's Monastery is one of the first of its kind in the world.

2

Dubrovnik's Maritime Insurance Law ("Ordo super assecuratoribus", 1568) is the oldest such law in the world.

In 1296, the Dubrovnik Republic made one of the first medieval sewage systems, which is still being used today.

3

The pharmacy in the Dubrovnik Franciscan Monastery, which has been in continuous operation since 1317 until today, is the third oldest of its kind in Europe.

4

The first quarantine in the world was set up in Dubrovnik in 1377. A quarantine is a place where persons arriving from areas struck by infectious diseases are separated until they are proven healthy.

5

Dubrovnik adopted a regulation on slavery abolition and prohibition of slave transportation on 27 January 1416, which is the first instance of slavery abolition in Europe.

7 8

In William Shakespeare's, "The Merchant of Venice "and" Taming of the Shrew" you will find the term "argosy", meaning "Dubrovnik boat".

9

Dubrovnik Republic was the first country in the world that recognized the United States. This was in 1783.

Even if you’re visiting Dubrovnik for just a few days, you should set aside some time to visit one of the many islands dotting the coast. One of the easiest to reach is Lokrum. The islet is small, less than one mile wide, and half a day there is all you need to see its sights. It takes about 15 minutes to get there by the taxi-boats that run from the old harbor every half hour from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. ENTERANCE 35 KN/6,30€

10

Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said: "Those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik."

11

With its mere 30m length, Dubrovnik's Ombla River is one of the world's shortest rivers.

A traditional "Harvesting" event is organised by the Konavle Agritourism Association at St. Blaise's Monastery in Pridvorje, every season in Konavle. White grapes harvest starts in the monks' vineyards in the vicinity of the monastery and the numerous Konavle winemakers and winegrowers join them, bringing carts of their finest white grapes. After harvesting and collecting grapes, it's time to make Communion wine using a traditional method. Girls wearing traditional folk dresses demonstrate how wine was once made. The event ends with the serving of a traditional white "menestra" dish for all visitors served with red and white wines from Konavle.

Even though Paradox does not serve regular tapas, the inhabitants of Split have decided to give these that name. - We are not a tapas bar, we serve 25, sometimes even 30 types of cheeses that come in various combinations. We also serve marinated anchovies, sweet bacon, duck breasts and similar, but people mainly like to eat cheese and prosciutto – says Zoran Pejović from Paradox who is, at the moment, running a successful Split restaurant called Paradigma. Pejović states that Paradox is not that young any more, they have been open for five seasons and guests have recognized their quality. - We have something specific. We present our food nicely, particularly the cheeses, and we inform each guest on the history of the served cheese, where it comes from and of what taste and tradition. Even though we have a number of imported cheeses, we mainly offer domestic ones, Dalmatian cheeses – adds Pejović and he also likes to eat tapas in Paradox.

DRINK in vinoNOW veritas

WINES Croatia is well known for great wines that receive awards all over the world. These are a few authentical sorts that you just have to try while in different Croatian regions AUTHOR SAŠA ŠPIRANEC

Wine is one of the most valuable elements of the Croatian tradition and gastronomic heritage. For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable component of both the daily routine and festivities. Over centuries, each Croatian wine region developed its own distinctive wine varieties that fully adapted to the climate, soil and expectations of their residents. When you find yourself in one of the wine regions of Croatia such as Dalmatia, Istria, Hilly Croatia or Slavonia, don’t forget to taste some of the wines favorite among the local population.

8

8

When in Istria, malvasia is the most important variety to try. A white wine full of freshness and pleasant aromas of ripe fruits, such as peaches and hints of blossoming acacias. In addition to this basic edition, malvasia can also be found in more ambitious forms after ageing for a long time and developing a co-mplex aromatic set.

In Dalmatia, it is plavac mali. This is the most important and the most represented red variety in Croatia. It yields soft, ripe and succulent wines when offered in a lower price range and originates from Dalmatian fields situated in ravines hidden in endless karst. On the

other hand, when it comes from steep slopes facing the sun and the sea, usually from islands or peninsulas such as Hvar, Brač and Pelješac, it gives powerful, warm, strong and ripe wines, perfectly reflecting the harsh conditions that created them with their richness and concentration.

When in Hilly Croatia, look for aromatic white varieties such as sauvignon blanc or Riesling (locally referred to as rajnski rizling). They also use many other varieties to make wine in the region, but what they all have in common are lively acids and a highly refreshing character. The wines of Hilly Croatia work ideally as an aperitif, refreshment in summertime, or to go with a light meal.

Slavonia and the Danube Region are an empire of graševina, the most important and represented white variety, but also a general type. Graševina is a good-time wine, and is ideal to go with your lunch. It is normally bold and refreshing with attractive aromas of apple, pineapple or citrus, and is offered at very affordable prices. Sometimes, when it comes from later harvests, it shows quite a different face and its aromas, such as meadow flowers and chamomile, become dominant in the riper, softer and richer flavor.

What to see...

What to see...

What to see...

The story of Split is already 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near the great Roman city Salona, where he wanted to spend the last years of his life. Diocletian's Palace is among the best preserved monuments of the Roman building heritage in the world,. it is must see.

Sea Organ is situated on the western end of Zadar´s Riva, and can be observed as a differently shaped part of the coast which consists of several stairs that descend into the sea.The Greeting to the Sun is on Istarska obala, at the very end of the Zadar peninsula.

Šibenik is in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic Coast, in the picturesque and indented bay where the Krka River, one of the most beautiful karst rivers in Croatia enters the sea. Šibenik today extends along the 100 kilometre long coastline between the Zadar and Split Rivieras, extending up to 45 kilometres into the hinterland area, at the bottom of Dinara mountain..

Old City Walls – the old city walls of Dubrovnik encompass the entire old city and run unbroken for almost 2 kilometres. The walls are a symbol of the city and offer glorious views over the city and the Adriatic Sea.
