and five Croatian premieres. These numbers only confirm how, in the first two weeks of June, Split is to be the centre of the entire Mediterranean film world. We are revealing the special film delights for you to enjoy during the nine days of the Festival. Among them is the winner of this year’s Berlin, the film 'Gori more' (Fuocoamare) of the famous documentarian Gianfranco Rosi. The documentary “Turizam!” by Tonći Gaćina will be shown to the large auditorium of Bačvice Summer Cinema, along with the earlier announced sure hits, the

Italian 'Anticipation' where the main role is played by the Oscar winner Juliette Binoche, and two French films with the famous Isabelle Huppert. The first film Things to Come, by director and writer Mia Hansen-Løve awarded with the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, while the second, “Asphalt Stories” by Samuel Benchetrit, is coming from the Cannes programme. One of the most interesting titles of this year’s festival is surely the Greek comedy 'Chevalier' with which director Athina Rachel Tsangari was celebrated at the London Film

Festival, while the Festival will be opened by the Spanish ‘Nothing in Return’ for which Daniel Guzmán received the Goya Award for best debut film. The programme also offers the best film according to ZagrebDoxa Best Choice Award ‘In the Twilight of Life’ by director Sylvain Biegeleisen, then the controversial 'Ivy' by Turkish Tolga Karaçelik who is coming to Split after the Sundance, even though censored in his homeland, while 'Madness' awarded with 11 awards and nominated for the Golden Lion in Venice is coming directly from Turkey.

City where you are not a stranger

Be sure to add your ‘To Do list’ a visit to the market on Saturday mornings, this is a sign of life at its fullest, people chat and mingle, exchange recipes, recount stories from the past, and good food is never afar AUTHOR MILENA BUDIMIR

The name Šibenik was first mentioned on Christmas of 1066 in the Charter of King Petar Krešimir IV, which is why the city is also called Krešimir's City. Up until the plague epidemic in the second half of the 17th century, it was the biggest city on the entire eastern coast of the Adriatic. St. Jacob's Cathedral is the most significant building of the 15th and 16th centuries on Croatia's territory. Thanks to its exceptional value, it was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in the year 2000.

We will make a suggestion of what to see and where to eat, but we strongly encourage you to explore Šibenik on your own - you won't regret it! You needn't worry about beaches as those in Šibenik are well known for their beauty - especially the Banj Beach. It offers an unforgettable view of the Old Town and is an ideal place for taking a selfie.

On warm evenings, everybody is outside. Šibenik's nightlife is neither scenery nor divided into old and young, so in most places you'll find an unpretentious mix of people. Young Croatians are a pretty cosmopolitan lot, and you would be surprised how urban the culture is. There are a handful of clubs which offer some decent nights, and a wide choice of bars to suit your tastes.

The secret

of desert magic Blaca Desert can be reached from several directions, but always and only – on foot. Ten minutes of driving from Nerežišća to Dragovode are followed by half an hour of walking across the canyon. The road that had for centuries been trodden my mules and horses is still the only connection with the world. The most picturesque approach is from the sea, from Blaca Cove where a narrow path leads through the canyon

Blaca Desert is located at the foot of an enormous isolated rock, between Bol and Milna, in the region of present day Nerežišća Municipality

On the first Saturday after the Assumption which is celebrated on August 15, pilgrims arrive in the Desert to celebrate the feast of Our Lady in Blaca. The Unburnt Blessed Lady, a wooden statue of the Mother of God, is carried in the procession, being the only remembrance of the tragic fire of 1724. The statue was brought to Blaca in the 16th century by Glagolitic monks who had fled from the Turks.

surrounded on both sides by gray rocky three-kilometrelong cliffs. The hills leading to the valley are very steep and rocky, filled with gorges, caves and holes. It was in one of those caves that in the mid 16th century Glagolitic monks, the founders of Blaca Desert, had settled. Their new home quickly developed into a hermit’s monastery. A church and monastery were built, as well as houses and farms, and the small religious community acquired great property with their diligent work. The Glagolitic monks worked on the land and bread cattle with their farm hands, and their cooperation was enforced by Regulations – the outline of their development. Last hermit from Blaca died in 1963, and the more than four century old priestly community disappeared with him. The secret of this desert magic, a monument of man’s work and persistence actually lies in the unity of nature and life that went on among the cliffs and steep slopes on this land of poor soil. Blaca Desert has been a museum institution within the Brač Culture Centre since 1994.

Paradox is absolutely the hit place in Split, and their tapas, helping portions of cheese with honey, jam, dry fruit and prosciutto are a regular quick dish with a glass of good wine. Even though Paradox does not serve regular tapas, the inhabitants of Split have decided to give these that name. - We are not a tapas bar, we serve 25, sometimes even 30 types of cheeses that come in various combinations. We also serve marinated anchovies, sweet bacon, duck breasts and similar, but people mainly like to eat cheese and prosciutto – says Zoran Pejović from Paradox who is, at the moment, running a successful Split restaurant called Paradigma. Pejović states that Paradox is not that young any more, they have been open for five seasons and guests have recognized their quality. - We have something specific. We present our food nicely, particularly the cheeses, and we inform each guest on the history of the served cheese, where it comes from and of what taste and tradition. Even though we have a number of imported cheeses, we mainly offer domestic ones, Dalmatian cheeses – adds Pejović and he also likes to eat tapas in Paradox.

For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable component of both the daily routine and festivities. Over centuries, each Croatian wine region developed its own distinctive wine varieties that fully adapted to the climate, soil and expectations of their residents. When you find yourself in one of the wine regions of Croatia such as Dalmatia, Istria, Hilly Croatia or Slavonia, don’t forget to taste some of the wines favorite among the local population.

8

8

When in Istria, malvasia is the most important variety to try. A white wine full of freshness and pleasant aromas of ripe fruits, such as peaches and hints of blossoming acacias. In addition to this basic edition, malvasia can also be found in more ambitious forms after ageing for a long time and developing a co-mplex aromatic set.

In Dalmatia, it is plavac mali. This is the most important and the most represented red variety in Croatia. It yields soft, ripe and succulent wines when offered in a lower price range and originates from Dalmatian fields situated in ravines hidden in endless karst. On the

other hand, when it comes from steep slopes facing the sun and the sea, usually from islands or peninsulas such as Hvar, Brač and Pelješac, it gives powerful, warm, strong and ripe wines, perfectly reflecting the harsh conditions that created them with their richness and concentration.

When in Hilly Croatia, look for aromatic white varieties such as sauvignon blanc or Riesling (locally referred to as rajnski rizling). They also use many other varieties to make wine in the region, but what they all have in common are lively acids and a highly refreshing character. The wines of Hilly Croatia work ideally as an aperitif, refreshment in summertime, or to go with a light meal.

Slavonia and the Danube Region are an empire of graševina, the most important and represented white variety, but also a general type. Graševina is a good-time wine, and is ideal to go with your lunch. It is normally bold and refreshing with attractive aromas of apple, pineapple or citrus, and is offered at very affordable prices. Sometimes, when it comes from later harvests, it shows quite a different face and its aromas, such as meadow flowers and chamomile, become dominant in the riper, softer and richer flavor.

If it weren’t for the inhabitants of the ancient Salona, Split - the capital and the biggest city of Dalmatia, wouldn’t be a city at all, merely a ruin of a palace. As it came to be, the ancient Salonians, fleeing before the Avars and Slavs found refuge on the nearby islands and the Diocletian’s palace. Before the invasion, Salona had been a big, bustling, cosmopolitan city, as evidenced by the remains of a number of significant buildings - the monumental amphitheater, shrines for many Roman gods and large city thermae.

8

The famous city is today a relaxing location for a holiday. In addition to the ruins of ancient Salona, we recommend visiting Gašpine mills, a preserved mill on the river Jadro, which has been of great importance for the economy of the entire region since the early Roman times. The relaxing vicinity of the river with its lively ducks blends beautifully with the surrounding greenery of Our Lady’s islet – the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia, whose church keeps the inscription of queen Helen the Glorious. Besides its rich

cultural heritage, today Solin is the youngest town in Croatia. It is marked with visit of Pope John Paul II to St.Mary Island in 1998. The citizens of Solin will proudly say that teir river Jadro is full of endangered endemic trout subspecie Softmouth trout, they also have a Swamp cypress as natural monument. Practical advices

Why is lavender so magical? Due to its pleasant odour and curative properties, the Romans used it for their baths while the Greeks used it mostly for medical proposes. Its effectiveness in various difficulties is widely known and there is almost no home whose wardrobe is not protected by a small bag of lavender flower. It is a traditional medicine for the pacification and alleviation of insomnia and headaches, anxiety, depression, tension and stress.

8

1

Mix a few drops of etheric lavender oil with olive oil which is an excellent combination for nurturing the body, hair and face, particularly after sunbathing. Add a few drops of etheric lavender oil to neutral oil (sesame oil), spread it over your temples and the back part of your neck to remove headaches and tension. What to see...

What to see...

What to see...

What to see...

The story of Split is already 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near the great Roman city Salona, where he wanted to spend the last years of his life. Diocletian's Palace is among the best preserved monuments of the Roman building heritage in the world,. it is must see.

Sea Organ is situated on the western end of Zadar´s Riva, and can be observed as a differently shaped part of the coast which consists of several stairs that descend into the sea.The Greeting to the Sun is on Istarska obala, at the very end of the Zadar peninsula.

Šibenik is in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic Coast, in the picturesque and indented bay where the Krka River, one of the most beautiful karst rivers in Croatia enters the sea. Šibenik today extends along the 100 kilometre long coastline between the Zadar and Split Rivieras, extending up to 45 kilometres into the hinterland area, at the bottom of Dinara mountain..

Old City Walls – the old city walls of Dubrovnik encompass the entire old city and run unbroken for almost 2 kilometres. The walls are a symbol of the city and offer glorious views over the city and the Adriatic Sea.

The Island of Hvar

The city of Sinj is located in the centre of the Dalmatian Zagora and the Sinj Alka has been taking place there since 1717. It is a spectacular knightly competition on horseback and one of the most attractive Croatian manifestations. Somewhat more to the north of Sinj is the picturesque Vrlika known for its impressive wheel dance without saying a word and music.

The Island of Hvar is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, with mild climate, numerous tourist attractions, cultural monuments, and plenty of wine and olives. Although it is detached from the mainland, everything is available on the Island of Hvar, and there is a feeling of mild isolation, which is exactly what some of us want on holidays.

Omiš offers superb hiking and climbing, while in the islands the walk to the highest point, Vidova Gora on Brač, offers remarkable views. For rafting the Cetina River tempts, while windsurfers should head to Korčula and kitesurfers to Neretva or Pelješac.

8

Eat well Croats are proud of the fine organic products their country has, wherever you are, a local market is never far away, so shop local.

9

Talk to the locals You'll soon understand that a Dalmatian people are very friendly. They will gladly help you, and show you what you can't find online, or in a book.

10

Try the seafood Croatia’s seafood is truly world class. Fish delights are comming daily from the Adriatic, the cleanest corner of the Mediterranean. No trip to the coast is complete without a seafood feast.
