2011 Board of Directors — For more than a century the Chamber has played a key role in fostering San Luis Obispo’s economic vitality while maintaining its quality of life. Chamber 2010 Highlights January The Chamber names former San Luis Obispo City Manager John Dunn as Citizen of the Year at 105th Annual Dinner. February The Chamber websites win second highest honor from Western Association of Chamber Executives. March The Chamber is one of the leading organizations behind “Make SLO Fast,” the movement that attempted to bring Google fiber to SLO. April The San Luis Obispo City Council commends the Chamber for its Economic Vision document and endorses the document’s six-point economic strategy. April The San Luis Obispo City Council adopts a city-wide “no-smoking” ordinance; the Chamber plays a key role on the task force and lobbies for the ban. May The Chamber hosts its annual “State of the City’s Economy” with a new segment that offers participants key tools in management, marketing and sales, and finances. May The Chamber takes a group of 20 to Sacramento to lobby key leaders, both elected and administrative, on important issues that effect SLO businesses. May The Chamber hosts a Sheriff candidate’s forum, the first of three candidates’ forums hosted by the Chamber throughout this election year to help inform members. July The Chamber receives “Community Spirit Award” from United Way of SLO County for inspiring hope and creating a brighter future in San Luis Obispo County. August The Chamber announces a fun trip to Ireland for Chamber members scheduled for spring 2011. September The Chamber takes SLOBusiness.com mobile. 8

September The Chamber, in partnership with the city’s Tourism Business Improvement District, launches a hospitality training program called My San Luis Obispo. October National Geographic’s THRIVE hits book stores – a proud moment for the Chamber after working with the author for more than a year to explain why SLO is such a “happy town.” October The Chamber supports inaugural Sunset Magazine’s Savor the Central Coast. October Leadership SLO Class XIX graduates; the program gears up for its 20th year beginning in 2011, interviews are conducted and Class XX is selected. November Measure H is defeated! The Chamber, along with other members of the community, worked hard to defeat Measure H and keep the Prado Road alignment on track for completion. November The Chamber plays a key role in the inaugural Central Coast Economic Forecast, the successor to the UCSB Economic Forecast. November The Chamber awards six businesses a 2010 Green Award for their efforts in sustainability leadership. The businesses include: Elemental Herbs, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens, Avila Bay Athletic Club and Spa, Solarponics and Tolosa Winery. December The City Council adopts a new Historic Preservation plan for the city, for which the Chamber advocated and had a major influence in drafting.

The Chamber receives over 100,000 requests for information about our members each year from potential customers, suppliers, clients and lenders. Only Chamber members receive referrals from the Chamber Office and Visitors Center. Exposure and Promotion:

These resource publications are used time and time again by new and continuing members, new residents and visitors to the area. Our Visitors Center is one of the busiest in the state of California with more than 100,000 visitors every year. All members are welcome to display marketing materials in the center. For new and expanding businesses we’ll conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Chamber and City officials to help you get needed attention. People here smile a lot. It’s normal here to smile and acknowledge people you don’t even know. Whether you’re walking downtown, riding your bike or driving your car, try a friendly smile and watch the magic happen.

Enjoy the outdoors. San Luis Obispo has magnificent scenery that you can experience by walking, hiking or biking in the public open space areas. When you connect with the land, you’ll start to feel the real San Luis Obispo.

Getting around is different in a small community like San Luis Obispo. Expect less traffic but slower cars, more pedestrians and friendly commuters. Try not to get frustrated — take a deep breath, look out at the blue skies and green hills and remember just how nice it is to live here. You might even try walking, biking or taking the bus once in a while yourself.

Try to shop and buy locally. San Luis Obispo is a self-reliant community where people and businesses work together to make the city successful. If you need a

Volunteer here. San Luis Obispo County has more than a thousand active not-for-profits. Find something you’re passionate about to support by giving a little of your time, money and heart. The community will be richer for it, and you will be, too.

Change is always difficult, and moving from a larger community to San Luis Obispo can be unsettling. Give yourself time — a year minimum — to adjust to the SLO life. The community might be different, but we think you’ll find you enjoy life here more.
