ish you were here is such a simple phrase. But it can mean so much. We often say it when we find an extraordinary place that we want to share with someone special. For more than 200 years, San Luis Obispo has been a town that captivates and enchants visitors with its beauty and friendly simplicity. In that time, countless postcards have been sent from the city with the same simple message, Wish you were here. And while that message may now take the form of text messages and emails, the significance remains the same: San Luis Obispo is a place you want to share with your loved ones. Wish you were here.
Wish you were here.

or more than 27 years, Thursday night’s Farmers Market has been the city’s signature event. A large section of the downtown is blocked off for three hours of festival-like fun, and there is something here for everyone. One end of the market is dedicated to produce, and the other showcases local merchants and restaurants. History coming alive –
Walk the Path ofHistory
1. Mission Plaza, 1968 – A gathering spot for many community events and festivals yearround. The plaza adjoins a creekside walk and a footbridge provides access to shops across the creek. Before Mission Plaza was created in 1968, Monterey Street ran in front of the mission, separating it from the creek. Originally, most businesses were located in the area in front of the mission. 2. Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, 1772 – Established by Father Junipero Serra, this is the fifth of California’s 21 missions. The current structure was built in 1793-1794 with adobe bricks made by Chumash Indians. It is still an active Catholic church. See The “must-sees” of SLO Town, page 12, for more information.
5
3. San Luis Creek, – The mission’s earliest source of water, San Luis Creek now flows below street level for much of its course through the city. It emerges at Mission Plaza and meanders for several blocks along the creekwalk in the center of town. 4. Judge Walter Murray Adobe, 1849 – This whitewashed building at one end of Mission Plaza is all that remains of the adobe home of Walter Murray, an Englishman who came to California with Stevenson’s Regiment of New York Volunteers in 1846. Murray printed the first editions of San Luis Obispo’s local newspaper, The Tribune, in this building. 5. San Luis Obispo County Historical Museum, 1905 – One of some 3,000 public libraries built worldwide by steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie, this building became the County Historical Museum in 1956. It is built of granite quarried from nearby Bishop Peak and sandstone from Arroyo Grande. See The “must-sees” of SLO Town, page 12, for more information. 6. The Creamery, 1906 – San Luis Obispo County once had a larger dairy industry than any other county in the United States, and this full-service creamery did not close until 1974. It now houses art galleries, shops, restaurants and a yoga studio.
DED IS OBISPO, FOUN MISSION SAN LU
IN 1772
The chiming bells of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa resonate through the heart of the city daily and remind us all of the rich history this city holds. This creek-side mission was founded 238 years ago by Father Junipero Serra. Standing on its steps, it’s easy to picture the diverse cultures that shaped the city’s history, from the native Chumash people, Anglo pioneers, and Chinese laborers to the Victorian merchants, European immigrants and 20th-century entrepreneurs. 7. Jack House, 1875 – Pioneering rancher and banker Robert Edgar Jack built this home, which has been preserved as a museum of Victorian life circa 1880. On display are artifacts of several generations of the influential Jack family, who lived here before donating the house to the City of San Luis Obispo in 1974. See The “must-sees” of SLO Town, page 12, for more information. 8. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1867 – One of the first Episcopal churches in California, St. Stephen’s houses a pipe organ donated by Phoebe Apperson Hearst. 9. Myron Angel Home, 1883 – This red Victorian was the home of Myron Angel, one of the driving forces behind the establishment of California Polytechnic State University. A publisher of The Tribune in the 1880s, Angel wrote A History of San Luis Obispo County, published in 1883.
13
10. Dallidet Adobe, 1853 – Pierre Hyppolite Dallidet, who established the first commercial vineyard on the Central Coast, built this home. Here, his brother Juan shot him to death in a family quarrel in 1897. The adobe contains many original furnishings and is surrounded by gardens.
All Phone numbers are in the 805 area code unless otherwise noted
19
11. Ramona Depot, 1889 – The Southern Pacific Railroad Company built the depot to serve the luxurious Ramona Hotel, which hosted presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. The elegant Victorian burned to the ground in 1905, leaving only the depot, which now shelters the horse-drawn carriage that carried passengers between the hotel and the train station. 12. Kundert Medical Building, 1956 – This is the only building in San Luis Obispo designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
18
13. Fremont Theater, 1940 – SLO’s Art Deco movie palace is fully restored, with all of its original features. Its ceiling is entirely painted with sea nymphs on horseback and its marquee is a neon showpiece at night. 14. Andrews Bank Building, 1893 – The bank was built by J.P. Andrews, who arrived on the Central Coast in the mid-19th century. Andrews donated the land across the street to the county for the site of its courthouse.

on the courthouse, a lengthy lawsuit ensued; Dana was county treasurer and so paid himself the amount due. 17. Sinsheimer Bros. Store, 1874 – The only San Luis Obispo County building with a cast-iron façade once housed the Sinsheimer Brothers Store. The façade was cast in San Francisco and transported down the coast by ship. 18. Sauer Adobes, 1860 – The pair of adobes across Chorro Street from the mission includes the two-story Monterey-style Sauer-Adams adobe, which was sided with redwood clapboard to protect it from the rain. It was originally a one-story structure similar to its smaller companion. 19. Ah Louis Store,1884 – Chinese immigrant merchant Ah Louis built this structure of bricks that he made himself. The store, which anchored SLO’s Chinatown, served as bank, post office and general merchandise store for the more than 2,000 Chinese laborers who came here to build the railroad. 20. Garden Street Inn, 1887 – The Italianate Queen Anne home built by German immigrants Morris and Helena Goldtree changed hands twice before being configured into eight apartments in 1923. In 1990, it opened as a bed-and-breakfast inn. 21. Presbyterian Church, 1905 – This church is built entirely of gray granite quarried from Bishop Peak, the second in the range of volcanic peaks that lead from San Luis Obispo to the Pacific Ocean at Morro Bay.

The main drag for shopping is Higuera Street; it is paralleled by Monterey and Marsh streets, where shopping is also abundant. And you’ll have more eye candy as you weave your way through the side streets that connect the thoroughfares, replete with boutiques and unique, local eateries. In the middle of it all is the Downtown Centre, a complex of national retailers, quaint restaurants and a seven-screen commercial movie theater. The area serves as a rendezvous point for locals and visitors alike. Just down Higuera Street, The Network is a European-style indoor arcade that has a sprinkling of local specialty shops, coffee shops and eateries. You might opt to enjoy your meal on the accommodating creekside terrace, where live music plays in fair weather. Art Jewelry
The twist of a silver bracelet made by a local jeweler can emulate the winding creek gently weaving its way through town. The smooth stroke of a painter’s brush is reminiscent of the breeze flowing through the Mission Plaza trees. Artists and jewelers alike find their inspiration here, in both the nature and culture of this small yet bustling town. Let SLO’s diverse galleries, antique shops and jewelry stores be your muse.

It’s no wonder why California’s finest students choose to pursue their dreams here. With the city’s hometown feel, friendly neighbors and abundant activities, San Luis Obispo has become known by many students as a home away from home. There is no better place to study or find inspiration than in the hills of Poly Canyon or on a grassy knoll near a calming creek. The presence of both Cuesta College and California Polytechnic State University’s youthful exuberance enhances the local culture and energizes the city. 3 2

WhyCuesta? • Cuesta College offers a wide variety of more than 120 degrees and certificates from general studies and vocational training to nursing and fine arts. • Cuesta’s high school enrichment program enables students to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously.
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is world-renowned for its distinctive “learn-by-doing” approach to education. Long respected for its agricultural programs, it now has the largest schools of engineering and architecture in the West. Approximately 18,000 students study in its 60-plus undergraduate and 20-plus graduate degree programs. The Performing Arts Center on campus hosts theatrical and musical productions by local, regional and touring performers. A self-guided tour of the campus can include a hike in Poly Canyon (where you can view experimental structures built by architecture students), a stop at the Shakespeare Press Museum, a visit to the horse and dairy units and a stroll through the ornamental horticulture greenhouses. Campus maps are available at the student union and the admissions office. Guided walking tours of the campus are also offered; call the campus tour hotline at 756-5734 for information. Enter the Cal Poly campus via Grand Avenue, north of downtown. 756-1111; calpoly.edu. Cuesta College is known statewide for its excellence as a community college dedicated to lifelong learning. It offers about 60 degree programs and 70 certificate programs to 11,000 students. The college gives tours of its scenic campus, near the base of Hollister Peak and Cerro Romauldo. Cuesta College is five miles west of downtown via Highway 1 north. 546-3100; cuesta.edu. All Phone numbers are in the 805 area code unless otherwise noted
• Day, evening, and weekend classes are available. • Online classes are available in entry level and advanced subjects. • Education is a fraction of the cost of universities and private vocational/technical schools.
Cuesta has something for everyone! • Community Programs - Non-credit classes, recreational opportunities and classes for personal enrichment. • Professional Development - Job training for workforce improvement and career advancement.
Classes available throughout the Central Coast

Touring the county OSO FLACO LAKE
Take the time to explore San Luis Obispo County’s breathtaking scenery, historic landmarks, abundant wineries, vigorous outdoor adventures and white sandy beaches. Whether you enjoy group tours or exploring on your own, San Luis Obispo County has more to see than you could ever imagine. Each of these tours starts in San Luis Obispo and takes about six hours, depending on how fast you drive and how many times you stop, but take the time to enjoy yourself and the spectacular views of the county.
AVILA BEACH
Tour 1 South County Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, Oceano Dunes, Oso Flaco Lake, San Luis Obispo Wine Region rom SLO, drive 12 miles south on U.S. Highway 101 to the San Luis Bay Drive exit. Turn right and continue until reaching See Canyon Road. A winding, hilly road shaded by sycamores and flanked by orchards and ranchland is a pleasant drive; in the fall fresh apples, cider and organic honey is available directly from growers. You can bypass See Canyon and continue on San Luis Bay Drive to Avila Beach Drive. Turn right and Avila Beach is only a couple of miles. It’s a classic California beach town where the sun often shines even when other coastal towns are foggy. Avila Beach Drive skirts the bay to reach Port San Luis, where you can charter a deep-sea fishing excursion or just watch commercial fishing boats from the pier. Return to U.S. Highway 101 on Avila Beach Drive, continuing south to the Highway 1 exit into Pismo Beach, famous for its clams and wide beach. Head straight onto Dolliver Street to downtown; a right on Pomeroy takes you to the pier and public parking. This is a great place to stop for fish and chips and browse surf shops.
Highway 1 south next crosses through Grover Beach, where you can rent an ATV to explore the Oceano Dunes. Just past the Grover Beach city limit sign, a eucalyptus grove is home to thousands of Monarch butterflies in late fall and winter. Continuing south past Oceano, the highway ascends the Nipomo Mesa. Travel for several miles and veer right toward Guadalupe. Turn right on Oso Flaco Lake Road and drive to the end to take an easy one-mile walk to the lake. A boardwalk crosses the lake and you can continue to the beach. Return to Pismo Beach, then travel east on Price Canyon Road to reach the San Luis Obispo Wine Region. SANTA MARGARITA
Tour 2 North County Santa Margarita, Atascadero, Templeton, Paso Robles Wine Country ead north on U.S. Highway 101 from SLO. Ascend Cuesta Grade, one of the highest passes in the county and an old stagecoach route. About eight miles north of SLO, take the Santa Margarita turnoff. Stay on the main road (El Camino Real) as it passes through Santa Margarita, a town with an Old West feel and some good antique shops. Proceed north on El Camino Real through Atascadero. Turn left onto Highway 41 and drive west to Atascadero Lake Park and Charles Paddock Zoo, which boasts a charming meerkat exhibit. Returning to town, again catch U.S. Highway 101 north. Exit at Vineyard Drive in Templeton and turn left. (A right will take you into the quaint downtown). West on Vineyard Drive will take you through wine country, crossing Highway 46. Continue on Vineyard Drive into the hilly far west Paso Robles wine country or turn right to drive past numerous wineries on the way back to U.S. Highway 101. A few miles farther north is downtown Paso Robles; San Luis Obispo lies about 35 miles south.

Tour 3 North Coast Montaña de Oro, Morro Bay, Cambria, Hearst Castle
ake U.S. Highway 101 south to Los Osos Valley Road, turn right and follow this road for about nine miles as it meanders past spectacular scenic peaks (part of the Seven Sisters) and peaceful farm lands where cattle graze. At certain times of the year, whole fields are bathed in colorful blooming flowers. In the spring, summer and early fall, roadside stands offer fresh produce to offer nourishment on your way. After about nine miles, you’ll enter the quiet community of Los Osos. Continue another six miles to state park Montaña de Oro, known for its spectacular ocean vistas and sweet-smelling eucalyptus groves. PG&E’s Point Buchon Trailhead is accessed through the south end of Montaña de Oro State Park (Coon Creek Parking Lot). The trail is open Thursday through Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the summer months (April through October) and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter months (November through March). Once you’ve soaked up your fill, leave the same way you entered, but this time turn left on South Bay Boulevard. Head north, past Elfin Forest Preserve and Morro Bay Wildlife Refuge, home to many waterfowl species. Turn left onto State Park Road and discover Morro Bay State Park. After passing the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History, the road becomes Main Street and leads to the heart of Morro Bay, a fishing village brimming with amazing seafood restaurants and abundant gift shops. In midwinter, whale-watching excursions depart from this small town. Main Street leads to Highway 1 north. Four miles up the road is Cayucos, a quaint beach town, followed by the tiny hamlet of Harmony (population 18), the site of a winery and a few artisans’ studios. Continue north and find nestled among Monterey pines the charming village of Cambria. Filled with art galleries, eclectic shops and fine restaurants, the town is an ideal romantic getaway. Nitt Witt Ridge, California Landmark 939, is a wacky hand-built home worth checking out. A stroll along Moonstone Beach, where you may spot some otters, provides a serene respite. Continue north to San Simeon, the location of Hearst Castle. The mountaintop mansion of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, and later inherited by his infamous granddaughter Patricia Hearst, is now a State Historical Monument. The extravagant estate is filled with art treasures gathered from around the world (see page 44). Return to SLO on Highway 1.

Hearst Castle –
A place like no other Imagine a sprawling castle with golden swimming pools overlooking extensive ranchlands and a rugged coastline. Now imagine that you can find it on California’s Central Coast. Welcome to Hearst Castle, the media-mogul mansion that is now a state park. Publishing powerhouse William Randolph Hearst’s historic and extensive lifestyle turned this beautiful landscape into the must-see landmark reminiscent of a bygone era. Experience what it was like to live like a 1920s high-roller or classic movie star by visiting Hearst Castle, just a short drive up the coast from San Luis Obispo. or publishing baron William Randolph Hearst, Pure California was a sprawling castle atop a hill overlooking extensive ranchlands and the rugged coast north of San Luis Obispo. Hearst Castle was a place “where Hollywood stars and the San Francisco elite were brought together by perhaps the only man colossal enough to stand astride both worlds,” according to Sunset magazine. It was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, built over 28 years and filled with Hearst’s prodigious collection of art and antiques from around the world. At once elegant and outlandish, the 250,000-acre estate consists of four homes, 165 rooms, 127 acres of gardens, 41 fireplaces, two pools and even a private zoo.
4 4
There are several tours which highlight specific parts of the castle and gardens. Tour One is recommended for first-time visitors. At La Cuesta Encantada (the Enchanted Hill), as he called it, Hearst entertained the celebrities of his era. Politicians, journalists, movie stars and European royalty frolicked in the pools, dined in the tapestry-hung dining room, played at lavish costume parties and watched films in the Castle’s theater. Today, Hearst Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in California. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument includes a large visitor center with an exhibit about the Hearsts, a National Geographic movie theater with a five-story screen, a gift shop and food service. You can choose from five guided tours of the castle all rated by the number of steps included or take a self-guided tour through the gardens; reservations are strongly recommended.
For more information, please visit www.hearstcastle.com or call (800) 444-4445 for tour reservations.
Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument is 43 miles north of San Luis Obispo via Highway 1. Open daily except New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Tours leave at regular intervals from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., later in summer. Spring and fall also feature an evening tour that allows guests to experience the castle as one of Hearst’s guests would have. During the winter holidays, the castle and its docents are decked out for the occasion.

rape growing and wine making are not new industries here. European settlers learned early that the climate and soil in and around San Luis Obispo are ideal for growing wine grapes. In the days of the Spanish missions, Franciscan padres planted vineyards to make wine for sacramental purposes. Locals have been producing wine here commercially for about a century.

The Edna and Arroyo Grande valleys, each a designated American Viticultural Area, boast a cool climate and soil rich in marine sediment. The combination nurtures superior Chardonnay and is ideally suited to Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache and white Rhône varietals, such as Roussanne and Viognier. From downtown San Luis Obispo, drive south on Broad Street/Highway 227 or Orcutt Road to discover the treasures of San Luis Obispo’s wine region. Just 30 minutes north of San Luis Obispo is the renowned Paso Robles wine region with many vineyards and tasting rooms. Most of the wineries have tasting rooms with friendly staff, unhurried tastings, exclusive releases and sometimes specialty food and gift items.
