SlotinFolkArt.com 13. Absentee Bidding Instructions: If you would prefer to submit absentee bids through the auction house instead of online: 1. The limit you leave should be the amount to which you would bid if you were to attend the sale. Bidding increments are listed above. Please make sure that your bids fall within these increments. At the auction, bids are handled in a competitive manner in an attempt to buy the object for less than your top bid. You will be competing against the other absentee, phone and internet bidders. You will pay one bid above the next highest bid, but no more than your maximum. If two absentee bids are received with the exact same amount, the first bid received will take precedence. Slotin Folk Art Auction will always attempt to purchase designated lots for the lowest possible amount in competition with other bidders, but we cannot be held responsible for errors or failure to bid. 14. Live Phone Bidding Instructions: If you would like to be called as the lots you are interested in come up during auction, please complete the form on page 3. Items are sold in the exact order of the catalog around 60 lots an hour. List the lot number, and a brief description. Where it says bid amount or phone number, simply list the phone number you would like us to use during the auction. You may leave a back up number. There is no need to list a bid amount unless you would like the phone operator to bid for you in the event that you can-not be reached. Absentee bidding and Phone bidding is a convenience we offer, and we will make every attempt to reach phone bidders as their lots come up during the auction, but we cannot be held responsible for errors, technical difficulties or failure to bid. Phone bidders may wish to view the auction live on online to check the progress of the sale and to help determine when to expect their phone calls.

Miriam Schecter was born and raised on the Lower Eastside of Manhattan, where she was exposed to many unique artists, and where she developed a deep love and appreciation for Art. With a desire to collect, Miriam started going to small galleries and attending art shows in the early 1940’s. She had limited funds but managed to save money and started her collection. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s she continued to acquire both lesser known and up and coming local artists. Much of her collection included artists from Works Progress Administration (WPA). Miriam cultivated a profound connection for self taught artists, such as Rex Clawson whom she collected an array of marvelous paintings and drawings. Her apartment walls were covered with all the beautiful artwork she amassed over decades. Nothing delighted her more than to showcase her collection and share memories of the artist/artwork with friends and family.

Alfredus Williams (1875-1967) Alfredus Williams was a pioneering, self-taught Afro-Caribbean artist born on the island of Dominica in the West Indies whose body of work crossed many genres, including landscapes, portraits, figure paintings, and still-lifes. Working primarily in oil and in a manner reflecting the “primitive” or “intuitive” styles arising from the West Indian folk art tradition, Williams composed a body of work laden with mystical and magical-realist elements, often highly detailed and with rich primary colors. The settings of his work included his native Dominica, as well as North Africa and the island of Bermuda. His Bermudian Work from 1959 is considered the earliest Outsider Art relating to the island. For many years he lived and worked in the historic Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Though he did not seriously take up painting until the age of 65, Williams’ work began to appear in New York City shows in the 1950s, including the “Art on the Square” exhibition in Washington Square Park in 1956, and the “Fourth Annual Exhibition of Negro Art,” held at the Jo Marino Gallery in 1958. Posthumously, his work was featured in the major group retrospective, “Visionary Landscapes: Work of Three Self-Taught Painters,” held at the Luise Ross Gallery in New York City in 1996. In addition to Williams, the show also featured the work of Minnie Evans and Louis Monza. Having worked well into his eighties, Williams’ contributions as a key figure in the development and legacy of twentieth century African-American art have earned him representation in several important reference books, including Theresa Cedarholm’s Afro-American Artists: A Bio-Bibliographical Dictionary, Roslyn Walker’s A Research Guide to the Visual Arts of Afro-Americans, and Ralph Harley Jr.’s A Checklist of Afro-American Art.
