Slotin Folk Art Auction April 24, 2021 - 10am Slotin Auction is Proud To Present The Davenport / Kemp Collection BILLY KEMP ON PASSIONATE COLLECTOR GARY DAVENPORT Antiques were the gateway that got Gary Davenport and Robert Bishop addicted to collecting folk art starting in the 1970s. They were romantic partners who became collecting partners, too. Much more than an enthusiast, Bob Bishop was a tastemaker who helped elevate self-taught art as an early director of New York’s Museum of American Folk Art starting in 1977 as well as the author of numerous books on folk art and crafts. Even after their romance ended, Bob and Gary still collected folk art together, filling the walls of their shared New York townhouse. When Gary, who was in the real estate business, purchased a second home in Miami in the late 1980s, his partner Billy Kemp remembers that their home quickly filled up with folk art, too. Though Gary’s tastes were diverse, mixing established and rising artists, he fell hard for Purvis Young’s work, at one point owning 900 pieces by the Miami artist. “Our house was like a museum,” Billy recalls. “You didn’t see walls. There was no storage left under beds or behind doors or in lofts. Everywhere you looked there was art.” Now Bob and Gary are both gone, and major pieces from their early, important art collections are about to find new homes, filling walls of new collectors.

One of Adams’ best-known portraits of Appalachian life, The Home Funeral was described by the late photojournalist Mary Ellen Mark in 1993 as “one of the strongest documentary photographs of our time.” The photograph is divided into two sections by the partition in the middle. On the right, the deceased was laid out in her own home. Her granddaughter lovingly placed a rose in her coffin. On the left, guests for the “country wake,” who brought food and flowers, went into another room for refreshments and a long visit. Adams knew the deceased and spent more than seven hours with the family that day—paying his respects, photographing family members around the coffin as was the custom, participating in a prayer service—before finally taking this photograph, which he had envisioned earlier that afternoon, at around midnight. Most of the prints from this long sold-out edition of 25 are in museum collections, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA: International Center of Photography, New York: Art Institute of Chicago: Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH: Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College Chicago: and the Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum. Literature: Appalachian Portraits, photographs by Shelby Lee Adams, University Press of Mississippi, 1993. Illustrated on page 6 and on the verso of the book’s dust jacket. Howard Finster (1916-2001)
LARRY AND JANE SCHLACHTER ON HOWARD FINSTER’S GIVING ANGEL When Larry Schlachter visited his friend Howard Finster one weekend in 1989 and laid eyes on an 8-foot-wide painted wooden cutout angel the artist had just completed, Larry knew he had to have it, even if he wasn’t quite sure how he’d afford it. Trying to keep up with unprecedented demand for his art, Howard had been moving into more of a production mode, and Larry sensed that a work of this beauty, size and detail would be hard to come by in the future. He was right.
Over the years, Larry and his wife Jane shared “Angel of the Lord” with many – from church and community members who attended 13 Easter sunrise services at their home on the Cloudland brow of Lookout Mountain, to exhibitions at Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum, Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and a Folk Art Society of America conference in Savannah. Now that they are little older and host guests less often, they decided that the angel deserves a new home. “Art needs to be seen and enjoyed,” Jane says. “Howard’s angel is too special a piece not to.” The co-owners of Summerville’s Trade Day flea market and Folk America art gallery will donate a portion of sale proceeds to help establish the Arts and Learning Center at Paradise Garden, Howard’s folk art environment maintained by the nonprofit Paradise Garden Foundation. “We are only too glad to do that to honor a dear friend who changed the direction of our lives and thousands of others as well,” Larry says. “I never in my wildest dreams could have imagined all the people who crossed our path -- artists, collectors and titans of industry – due to Howard. God bless his soul.” - Howard Pousner

Provenance: ex. Collection of Victor Niederhoffer. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. Ship: $45 Born to Italian immigrant parents, Fasanella spent his youth delivering ice with his father from a horse-driven wagon. His father Joseph Fasanella abandoned his family and returned to Italy in the 1920s, which led to young Ralph serving two brutal stints in reform schools run by the Catholic Church. (He later said he was sexually abused by the priests there.) His crimes: truancy and running away from home. During the Great Depression Fasanella worked in garment factories and as a truck driver. A self-taught artist who began to paint in 1945, he became consumed by art and left labor union organizing to paint full time. To pay the bills, he bought a service station and worked there. On October 30, 1972, Fasanella appeared on the cover of New York magazine. The cover depicted him wearing a work shirt and standing in his tiny studio. Accompanying the photo was the headline: “This man pumps gas in the Bronx for a living. He may also be the best primitive painter since Grandma Moses.” That magazine cover catapulted Fasanella to national fame. His canvases are bold, colorful, and loaded with detail. Themes included organized labor, the dignity of work, family, New York City, the Yankees, memories of his youth, and many others. Fasanella’s work was featured in a retrospective at the American Folk Art Museum, New York, in 2014.

Stephen JM Palmer (1882-1965) Palmer suffered a spinal injury in the 1920s that left him bedridden in later life. He painted prolifically during his last decades and forged a cult-like devotion with his fellow religious outsiders. The Cold War, the conversion of Russia, and his Sacrificial Love Society were important to him. His medium was pen, ink, and water color.
