2. Buyer pays Slotin Folk Art Auction (“Slotin”) premium of Twenty-five percent (25%) of the Lot’s Hammer price. (As used throughout these “Terms and Conditions,” “Lot” means an object or group of objects offered for sale as one unit and “Hammer Price,” means the price announced by the auctioneer when the hammer falls.) The Buyer’s Premium shall be collected by Slotin directly from the Buyer at the time of sale.

3. Slotin will accept cash, checks and credit cards. (The “Sales Price” is the Hammer Price plus the Buyer’s Premium, plus applicable taxes). Any returned check will result in a return check fee and entitle Slotin to the remedies provided under Georgia law and in paragraph 7, below.

4. Title to Lot and risk of loss or damage to the Lot passes to the Buyer when the Hammer falls (i.e. when Slotin, as agent for seller, accepts the bid). Slotin Auction shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises after the date of sale. The Sales Price must be paid prior to the close of the auction. Buyers with an outstanding balance after 14 days of the close of the auction will be charged a ten percent (10%) late fee on the Sales Price. Buyers must provide a credit card number in order to bid. Buyers with an outstanding balance after 14 days will be charged the outstanding balance, including (10%) late fee and (4%) credit card fee to their credit card. Slotin will have sole and absolute discretion to determine who the successful bidder is and/or may withdraw the Lot or reoffer the Lot for sale, in the event of a dispute.

5. Invoices will include shipping prices for most items. If an item is listed as “Buyer Responsible for Shipping,” we suggest you contact one of the shippers we have listed or we are happy to work with anyone you would prefer. You may pick up the items after the auction by appointment. Just email if you would like us to remove the shipping charges.

6. ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS.” Slotin, for itself and as agent for the seller, makes no warranties or representations of any kind with respect to any Lot. Buyer agrees that in no event shall Slotin be responsible for the correctness, description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, value or condition of any Lot. Nothing being said or done by Slotin shall be deemed a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability by Slotin.

7. If Buyer fails to pay the Sales Price at the close of the auction or otherwise comply with these Terms and Conditions, Slotin shall be entitled to the following remedies: (1) to recover from Buyer any monetary loss arising on any resale of the Lot (including all costs of any resale or attempted resale); (2) any deposit or partial payment paid by Buyer: (3) to recover from Buyer all of its costs and expenses of collection, including attorneys’ fees of fifteen percent (15%) of the outstanding balance, interest on the outstanding balance of 1.5% per month and costs; and (4) all other relief and remedies allowed by the law. Georgia law applies and jurisdiction and venue over all disputes involving these Terms and Conditions shall be in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

8. Bidding on any Lot is acceptance of these Terms and Conditions and any and all other terms announced at the time of sale. These Conditions constitute the entire agreement between bidders and Slotin and supersede all prior agreements between them, if any.

9. Shipping Is Easy! Slotin Folk Art Auction will be glad to pack and ship your auction purchases for you. We ship via UPS Ground. The shipping charges are listed in the catalog for U.S. continental shipments only. A shipping invoice will be mailed along with the auction invoice the week after the auction. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

The limit you leave should be the amount to which you would bid if you were to attend the sale. Bidding increments are listed above. Please make sure that your bids fall within these increments. At the auction, bids are handled in a competitive manner in an attempt to buy the object for less than your top bid. You will be competing against other absentee, phone and internet bidders. Items are sold in the exact order of the catalog around 45 lots an hour. List the lot number, and a brief description. Where it says bid amount or phone number, simply list the phone number you would like us to use during the auction. You may leave a back up number. There is no need to list a bid amount unless you would like the phone operator to bid for you in the event that you can-not be reached. Absentee bidding and Phone bidding is a convenience we offer to our customers and we will make every attempt to reach phone bidders as their lots come up during the auction, but we cannot be held responsible for errors, technical difficulties or failure to bid. Phone bidders may wish to view the auction live on online to check the progress of the sale and to help determine when to expect their phone calls.

13. Bidding Live on the Internet During the Auction: Bidders may place absentee bids or bid in real time along with our audience online. If you are bidding live online the Buyer’s commission is 25%. You may view the auction live for no fee. The process of bidding live on the internet is convenient, but not perfect. Paradise Garden, a historic art environment created by the most famous 20th century contemporary self-taught/folk artist, Rev. Howard Finster.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Paradise Garden is located in the small rural town of Summerville, Georgia, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The 4-acre historic art environment is filled with art structures including concrete grotto walls, 200+ ft of mosaic sidewalks, a 50+ year old mosaic garden with raised beds, a 300 ft outdoor art gallery, and 18 separate art structures and buildings, all created by Rev. Howard Finster.

CNN called it, “The Souths most inspired garden.”

Paradise Garden is one of the top 10 art environments in the world and is open to the public 6 days a week, 12 months a year.

Over 43,000 patrons have visited Paradise Garden from 33 counties since the Garden was purchased by Chattooga County in 2012. Today, it serves as a nonprofit regional rural art center and one of two major economic drivers for the impoverished and economically depressed Appalachian region of Georgia. Programming includes an art museum and visitors center, year-round tours, children art camps and workshops, adult art classes, art exhibitions, 16 music performances, art conservation, historic restoration and a two-day NEA sponsored nationally recognized folk art festival benefiting 100+ local and regional visual artists, musicians, authors and spoken word.

Robert Lindsey Walker was born in 1909 in Savannah, Georgia, where he lived his entire life. He spent his career working as a stonesetter until his retirement in the late 1960's. He was married and divorced with no children. Upon retirement, Walker took on a variety of odd jobs including working for the Senior Citizens Employment Service, landscaping, and driving a cab. He was well known in the historic district of Savannah for his helping hand with odd jobs, and for his meticulous yardwork. Walker combed the downtown streets looking for the discarded materials that he collected throughout his life. Upon his death, box after box of these collected materials were found, stacked from floor to ceiling. Though his colleagues remember him "doodling on anything that would stay still," few people knew of his meticulously constructed drawings depicting the homes and lawns he knew so well from his work as a gardener, and the neighborhoods where he picked up and delivered the "widow ladies" in his cab. Only after his death were they discovered.

Robert Lindsey Walker's work is in the collection of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, and the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA.

ARTIST ANNA WEISS Self -taught artist Anna (aka Dianne) Agnes Hallenen Weiss, was born 1933, in Windham Vermont to Estonian immigrant farmers. As a young artist she drew and painted landscapes and animals copied from photographs found in the Saturday Evening Post, National Geographic and other magazines. Hollywood fan magazines were also a source of inspiration as she collected movie star pin-ups decorating the walls of her bedroom with the likes of Lauren Bacall, Rosalind Russel, Lucille Ball, Clark Gable, and Van Johnson. At 18 she married a former professional boxing champion and lived in the Bronx.

They eventually moved to Miami where they raised two sons and Anna worked with her husband at their photo studio where she hand colored black and white portraits. At middle age she endured a sudden mental breakdown and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Being heavily medicated for years with anti-psychotic drugs prevented her from succumbing to catatonic prayer vigils and trances. Her art making ceased prior to and during this time. It wasn’t until she eventually improved and was weaned off those meds that she returned to art, and at age 80 began drawing with an entirely new vision and heightened passion. She revisited her adolescent obsession with celebrities by doing their portraits working from memory or photos rendering her favorites such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Tom Jones, Princess Diana, and Barbara Streisand. Family and childhood memories are also go to subjects. Her frequently used mediums include pencil, felt tip markers, pen, and watercolor which she combines with abandon often pairing text and image in an effort to reclaim her history or the history of others. If she isn’t drawing, or watching vintage Hollywood films, she collects jokes and tells them to any captive audience she can corral using her self- dubbed stage names, Anna Banana or Dirty Gerty. Her love of life, and fearless positive outlook comes through in her work and is a testament to her identity as a survivor. According to Anna, ”I’m a Van Gogh in a female body.”
