T h e number of actual drowning cases is st ill very h igh , b u t wo u ld b e much h igher b u t for the efficient p atr ollin g of ou r bea ches and the r eady willingness of Club m embers to go o ut-under very trying condi tions at times -to the assistance of those in distress . The Cl ubs ren d er wonderful service to the community, and the co m m u nity could , throu gh its Local Bodies , help the Clubs in many ways to en su r e a co n t in u a n ce of th eir efficient work on our beaches. It is with feel ings of pride and justification that the Association records the fo regoi ng set of fig ures in making its appeal for a definite recogni tion by the general public and Lo cal Authoriti es in the activiti es of its Clubs, and in th e hope that some tangible recognition will be given to ensure the continuance of su ch services und er the most efficient conditions as regards to necessary equipm ent for all Clubs. A WORTHY ACHIEVEMENT. As far as the Association is a ware, on no occasion when the services o f membe rs of S u r f Life-Saving Clubs have been called upon has a life been lost. THE G OVE RN M ENT'S RECOGNITION OF S ER V ICES. The Hon . Minister of I n terna l Affairs (Hon . W . E. Parry, M .P.), in addressing th e Ann u a l G ener a l Meeting of the Association on O cto ber 24th, 1936, m a d e special reference to the work being done by th e Sur f Life-Saving Clubs of th e Do minion, a n d expressed the appreciation of the Go ver n m ent for such services. In handing to the President of th e As soci ati on a cheque for ÂŁ200 the Governm ent, thro ugh t he Hon. Mi ni ste r , as a g ra n t f rom the Art Unions, sig n ified in a very d efin it e manne r its app roval of the operations of th e Surf Li fe -Saving mo vem ent a s co n d uc ted by th e Associa tion . The C ou nc il places on r ec ord it s sincere a p p reciatio n of th e recogni tio n of th e ser vic es that the A ssoci a ti on is endeavouri ng to re nde r to th e co mmu ni ty, a n d trusts th at th is form of recogni t ion will be co nt in ue d and will be fo llowed by a j ust r eco gnitio n in this or so me ot her for m by Loca l A u tho ri ties an d t h e general p ublic.

A n event o f u nprecedented impo rta nce t o th e Association was the recept io n of th e team sent to visi t t h e D om in ion b y the A .S .L.S .A ., and the visit c rea ted cons id era bl e in terest not o n ly t o C lu b m em ber s. but to th e g en eral pu bl ic . Du e to th e h ealth co ndi t ions ex ist ing at t h r- ti me of th e visit, it was fou n d impossib le to exte n d th e visit to th e S o uth I sla nd , and th e to u r was co nfi ned to a tt en dan ces in the N orth I sland Distric ts. reached by me mb ers of the A.S.L.S .A ., a n d in the wat er ' even ts the standard reached wa s very high indeed . The team showed to cerfection in the surf events, and had little diffi culty in demon;trating its su p e r iority in the surf races. Th ough gi ving of its best at all ti me s, th e team. soon gave in d ications on the co m m en ce ment o f the t ou r th at it was not o ut fo r th e securing o f prizes or honours, b u t m ainly for the purpose of c re a ti ng further interest in the a cti vit ies o f the or ganisati on to whi ch they bel onged and it s kindred organisation, the N .Z.S.L.S.A. The tour , educationally, was all that could be d esired, and the sportsmanship a n d general deportment of th e team a n d party th roughout the t our h a s left an indelible m emo ry in th e m inds of those whose good fort u ne it was to h a ve m et and been as soc iated with our visi ting m emb ers fr om across th e Tasm an . Th e Manage r, Captai n , a n d a ll memb ers of the team a nd pa rt y were willi n g and anxious to be of the g re a test assistance to th e D omini on As soc ia tion a n d the va ri ous Clubs, and we record with th e hi gh est apprec iation ou r sincer est thanks for the ac tio n of th e A .S. L.S .A . in se n d in g the team o ver and fo r th e great h elpfulness of the tea m . Th e co u rtesy sh ow n to ou r o fficia ls and mem ber s by th e visitin g p arty was 'o n e of th e factors that h a s made th is initial visit of an A .S.L.S.A . tea m to the D om in ion o f N ew Z ea land an epic eve nt in our .sh ort h istory. N .Z. NATIONAL SURF LIFE-SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS. The N ational Surf Life-Sa vi ng Championships wer e condu cted at Lyall Bay Beach, Wellington, on Saturday and Sunday, February l Jth and 14th. The a rr a n g em ents for th e conduct of th e Cham pionships wer e in th e hands of the \'V'e lli ngton District Surf LifeSaving Associatio n , and the Association is to be congratulated on the great amount o f d etailed work and o rganisation it had done to ensure the su cces s of the carnival. The accommodation arrangem ents were id eal , and the gea r supplied f or th e u se of Clubs and officials reach ed a very high standard indeed. Considerable pub lic interest was a r oused , and with the additional attraction of the presence of th e vi siti ng Surf Life-S aving te am from Australia record atten dances wer c f o re ca st ; but fo r ces, o the r than club enthu siasts, took a h and. a n d th e wea ther condi tions were o f th e worst, and, in de ed , co uld h ardly be worse for suc h ev ents as a National Surf Championships M eeting. Despite th e inclement weather conditions th e a ttendan ces on both . days were very grarifyin g. The Championships were d eclared officially opened by The H on . M in ist er of Educat ion a n d Health ( H on. P . Fraser, M .P. ) , and th e d eclaration o f the A thletes' Oath by Mr. F. Mollier, Lyall Ba y Club, \1(felling to n . The object ive o f entrants to m embership in Surf Life-Saving is, or sh ou ld b e, th e securing of the qualifying emblem of a trained Surf Life-Saver-th e Surf Life-Saving Medallion-and though previous r eports of the Association have only made passing references to the number of th ese distinguished awards gai ned by the Clubs du r in g the previous year, the fo llow ing su mm a ry of the awards ga ined by Club m embers of the va r io u s District Associations and individua l Clubs is well worthy of record in g, a n d g ive s indication of the increa sing efficiency of the young memb ers of the Clubs, and a d efini te g u a ra ntee to th e bathers a n d visitors t o the beach es o f the increa sing number o f those fully conversant with the knowled ge required to be of material assistance in the case of distress in the water.
