2012-13 Season Outlook T
he 2012-13 edition of the Southeastern Louisiana University golf team will be one of the youngest in head coach Tim Baldwin’s storied career. But with a savvy veteran at the top of the lineup, a second-year player who came on strong and competed on the top amateur stage and a talented group of freshmen, Baldwin has the Lions poised again to contend for the Southland Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. The Lions will enter their 25th season under Baldwin fresh off their sixth overall berth, and third at-large selection, in the NCAA Regionals. But Southeastern will be looking to replace three-year letterwinner Philipp Westermann, who rewrote the Southeastern record books and finished his career as the Southland Conference Golfer-of-the-Year. With the loss of Westermann, who posted the three lowest single-season scoring averages in school history, Southeastern will rely on the team’s lone senior, Rhys West, along with young veterans Grady Brame and Baptiste Courtachon to help fill the void. Along with returning veteran Charlie Sault, Baldwin will look for the freshman trio of Lawrence Allan (who enrolled at Southeastern in the Spring 2013 semester), Eamon Bradley and Nicholas Inderthal to make an immediate impact in the lineup and help Southeastern maintain its foothold as one of the top-echelon teams in the Southland Conference. “We’re a young team and we’re making progress, but we’ve still got a long way to go,” Baldwin said. “The Southland Conference is such a competitive league in golf with quality teams, but with some additions for us in the spring, I can see us as one of the teams that will contend for the conference title.”
After limited playing time early in the spring portion of Southeastern’s 2011-12 schedule, Baptiste Courtachon was a major contributor in the Lions’ five-man lineup during the final five events of the season.
2012-13 Southeastern Louisiana University Golf
The key to Southeastern’s success in 2012-13 will rely mainly on the play of West, the team’s mostseasoned veteran who finished second for the Lions in scoring average (73.49) last season and was named third-team All-Southland Conference. Competing in all 12 events last season, West recorded 13 rounds of par or lower along with four rounds in the 60’s while garnering a top-10 finish at the annual Louisiana Classics. “Rhys is super important to our team,” Baldwin said. “He’s our lone senior, he’s a good team leader. We need him to perform in the spring. Eamon was solid for us in the fall and Grady has been solid as well. (Sophomore) Baptiste Courtachon really had a good fall for us and Charlie Sault has made some strides and can help our team.” He’ll be joined in the lineup by Brame, a Hammond native who played strong as a true freshman during the final month of the 2011-12 season and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Amateur. After pacing the Lions at the NCAA Regionals, that included low score of 1-under-69 on the famed Stanford Golf Course, Brame looks to build off a solid fall campaign where he led the Lions in events at UAB and Arkansas State. Another young veteran - Courtachon - earned a spot in the lineup during Southeastern’s final five events in 2011-12 after a solid performance at the Lions’ own Carter Plantation Intercollegiate. The French native posted his best round of the season, an even-par 70, at the NCAA Regionals and played in three of Southeastern’s four events in the fall, carding a low round of 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
5 Southland Conference Players of the Year | 9 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars | 43 All-Southland Conference Selections
As a freshman in 2011-12, Grady Brame recorded eight rounds of par or better and averaged 75.34 in 35 rounds of play. Brame carded a low-round of 1-under-69 on the famed Stanford Golf Course in the NCAA Regionals and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Golf Course in suburban Denver, Colo.
Sault, a native of England, saw his most significant action of his young career in the fall, competing in three events that included the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate and the Arkansas State Fall Beach Classic. His best showing came at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate where he carded a 54-hole score of 227, highlighted by a low round of 1-under 70. With the loss of Westermann and the absence of West for the first two events of the fall due to an injury, much of the scoring load was carried by Bradley, who played in all four events and posted the lowest scoring average (73.08) on the team. The native of Scotland made an immediate impact for the Lions, earning a top-10 finish at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate before a fifth-place performance at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. In 12 rounds of action during the fall, Bradley recorded four rounds of par of better and twice carded scores in the 60’s, highlighted by his 5-under 67 at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. Another freshman, Inderthal saw limited action during the fall as he lone action came at the UAB Shoal Creek Invitational. But the German native brings a ton of potential to the lineup and will look to see increased playing time during the spring. Another Scottish freshman, Allan, will look to make his mark in the lineup after a stellar amateur career across the Atlantic. Rated as one of the top amateurs in Scotland, Allan brings good ball-striking ability to the lineup and a solid short game. After competing in four events during the fall, the Lions will have a rugged test in the spring as they prepare for the Southland Conference Championships that will be held April 22-24 in McKinney, Texas. The Lions open play during the spring portion of their schedule at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational before competing in the annual Louisiana Classics, hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette. In its third tournament of the spring, Southeastern will return home to host the eighth annual Carter Plantation Intercollegiate on March 18-19 at picturesque Carter Plantation. The Lions will host a 12-team field that includes Southland Conference opponents Nicholls State, Oral Roberts and Sam Houston State along with future league rival New Orleans plus Austin Peay, Jackson State, Lipscomb,
Louisiana-Monroe, Oakland, SIU Edwardsville and South Dakota. After hosting the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate, Southeastern will look to defend its title at the UALR First Tee Collegiate Classic before competing in a pair of tournaments hosted by SEC schools - the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate (Ole Miss) and the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship (Mississippi State). With a young team learning the pace of the collegiate game during the fall, Baldwin is hopeful that the team’s work ethic and past success will lead to a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regionals that will be played May 16-18 with the possibility of competing in the NCAA Championships that are slated for May 28 - June 2 in Atlanta, Ga. “We made improvements during the fall and the guys worked hard in getting ready in the spring,” Baldwin said. “We didn’t have the fall that we wanted, but we ended on a positive note and hopefully that carries us into the spring.”
Southeastern Louisiana University golfer Rhys West was one of 146 Division I players from across the nation named as a Cleveland Golf/ Srixon All-America Scholar in an announcement by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The award of West marked the eighth consecutive year a Lion was named to the prestigious group joining former standouts Brett Bergeron (2006 and 2007), Matthew Carvell (2008 and 2009), Cedric Scotto (2010 and 2011), Hugo Leon (2006) and Anders Hofvander (2005). In helping Southeastern to its sixth berth in the NCAA Regionals, West averaged 73.49 on the course in 35 rounds of play. The junior recorded 13 rounds of par or better, including a career-best four rounds in the 60s. In a sixthplace finish at the 27th Annual Louisiana Classic, West shot his season-low round of 68. West earned third-team All-Southland Conference honors in 2011-12 and was named to the league’s All-Academic squad. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon AllAmerica Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 77.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. Carter Plantation - Home of the Lions
Carter Plantation, a new David Toms’ Signature course located just minutes from Hammond in Springfield, La., is destined to become one of the best layouts in the State. Through a partnership with the Athletics Department, Carter Plantation is the new home for Lions’ Golf
C
arter Plantation is home to PGA championship and Louisiana native David Toms' first signature design and the course is the recent recipient of Golf Magazine's "Top 10 Courses You Can Play". The spectacular 18-hole, 7,000-plus yard, par-72 golf course winds through three distinct Louisiana landscapes - live oak flats, cypress wetlands, and upland pine forests. Carter Plantation is an honored member of the Louisiana Audubon Golf Trail. Following a strict evaluation process including course playability, conditioning, amenities and customer service, The Louisiana Golf Commission moved to add the course to the nationally recognized trail. As a member of the trail, Carter Plantation is part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf Courses, a program dedicated to protecting the environment and preserving the heritage of the game of golf. In addition to meeting Audubon Golf Trail criteria, Carter Plantation is equipped to professionally cater group and tournament outings with expert PGA of American service standards. The visually stunning daily fee course has a Louisiana Golf Association slope rating of 140 and a course rating of 74.4 from the championship tees. Both the front and back nines consist of two par-3s, five par-4s, and two par-5s. Eighty-six strategically placed bunkers offer surprise and challenge to the golfer. Carpeted with Tifeagle on the greens and Tifsport on the rolling fairways, each of the holes offers four or five tee positions, with water coming into play on 11 of the holes. Great effort has been made to preserve the plantation's native wildlife habitats, and indigenous grasses and plants have been extensively incorporated into the landscaping. A double-ended driving range, three practice greens, and practice bunkers are additional features of the course.

art Bellairs is in his third year at Southeastern Louisiana University after being named the school’s 15th Athletic Director in November of 2009. Before arriving at Southeastern, Bellairs served in the same capacity at Savannah State University. A former senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs oversees 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 23 regular-season or tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, three in men’s golf and two in men’s basketball. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. During Bellairs’ tenure at Southeastern, the University’s athletic facilities have seen significant improvements, including renovations to locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The Southeastern baseball team saw the addition of a covered hitting facility and a new bullpen area while the Ray A. Naquin Strength and Conditioning Center installed new flooring and workout equipment. The Southeastern track and field team saw improvements with locker rooms, along with a state-of-the-art facility. In volleyball, the Lady Lions’ will move into an expanded locker room while the women’s tennis team moved into its new locker rooms and refurbished courts. Probably the biggest improvement during Bellairs’ tenure has been the replacement of the playing sur-
face at Strawberry Stadium. The new surface - which was installed in June 2012 - was the same surface used in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during the 2010 season. With improvements to help Southeastern on the field, there has also been steady improvement in the classroom and APR scores. Eleven of the 15 sports met or exceeded the standard of 925 set forth by the NCAA. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins. Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams. As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of the Year and the “Sports Illustrated” Unknown Coach of the Year. Bellairs, a native of Richmond, Ky., also served as assistant basketball coach at James Madison University

The Southland Conference I
n an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators nearly 50 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 11 member universities in four states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current member Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. The successful transformation continues. On Oct. 11, 2011, the Southland Conference announced the addition of Oral Roberts University, effective for the 2012-13 academic year, marking the league’s first entry into the state of Oklahoma and the Tulsa metropolitan area. Shortly thereafter, on Nov. 21, the Southland announced the addition of Houston Baptist University for the 2013-14 academic year, giving the league an 11th member and its first institution in the region’s largest city, home to significant studentrecruitment and alumni bases. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference membership also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F.
