2009 Southeastern Louisiana Women’s Soccer Media Guide
2009 Season Preview/southland preseason teams & Polls The 2009 Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team reports to campus on Wednesday, it will do so with a roster that features a solid blend of proven veterans and talented newcomers. The Lady Lions return nine letterwinners – including seven starters – from last season’s squad, which finished with an 11-6-2 overall record a season ago. That solid nucleus will be joined by a group of 11 freshmen poised to make an impact on the Southland Conference under the guidance of 12th-year head coach Blake Hornbuckle, who has led the program to five Southland titles in his career. Southeastern led the Southland with 48 goals scored a season ago and return three of their top five scorers from 2008. Second team All-Southland selection Natalie Santana, a junior from Cypress, Calif., is the top returner on offense. In her first full season as a starter, Santana was second on the team in points with 16 and tied for the league lead with eight assists. “Natalie is extremely versatile and savvy,” Hornbuckle commented. “She plays with a calm demeanor and has developed into a complete player in the midfield.” Sharing that Southland lead for assists was senior Candice Wallace, who has started every match in the past three seasons for the Lady Lions. A steady performer in her time with the Lady Lions, Wallace heads into the year ranked among the school’s career leaders in goals, assists and points. “Candice is another player who has proven to be extremely versatile,” Hornbuckle stated. “Her ability to blow by defenders and slash to the goal allows her to create numerous opportunities.” Wallace is not the only Lady Lion senior climbing the school’s career lists. With 13 career goals, Dana Mayer is currently ninth on the school’s career list heading into her final season. Mayer was tied for second on the team with six goals last season, including a team-high three game-winners. “Dana has an uncanny ability in tracking down balls and transitioning quickly,” Hornbuckle said. “She’s been a tireless worker during her career and has a motor that won’t stop.” Productive seniors Gloria Burkhart (four goals in 2008) and 2008 Southland and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year Jenna Oney (three goals, four assists) will also return for
the Lady Lions. Newcomers Lauren Stillians, Maiya Cooper, Megan Miller and Kailey Mills, among others will provide depth and firepower to the Lady Lion attack. “Gloria possesses a dangerous left foot and her ability in service makes her a difference maker,” Hornbuckle commented. “Jenna has a true attacker’s mentality, enjoys going 1-v-1 and does a great job getting behind the defense. “Our newcomers give us several versatile options on the attack. Lauren’s speed and willingness to attack will make her an impact player. Maiya is a great competitor who will put a lot of pressure on the opposition,” Hornbuckle added. “Megan Miller will be a good target for us, while Kailey adds depth on the flank, has a strong service and plays with an edge that we like.” While the 2008 Lady Lions put up gaudy offensive numbers, the strength of last season’s team was in the defensive backfield – an area which figures to be a strength again this season. Leading the way for the Lady Lion are returning two-year starters Brittany Prieto and Nicole Brannigan. The junior tandem, along with versatile sophomore Kyle MacIntosh, who was a key player in the back and midfield last season, give Southeastern a strong veteran group returning from a team that tied a Southland record with 13 goals allowed last season. “We return a wealth of experience in the backfield,” Hornbuckle commented. “Nicole, Brittany and Kyle are great at getting us into our attack from the back and making attackers defend them.” Sharing MacIntosh’s ability to play multiple positions is newcomer Karly Dagys, who Hornbuckle expects to make an immediate impact in a variety of ways. Dagys and fellow freshman Samantha McNally will add to an already deep backfield. “Karly is someone we feel can play anywhere on the field,” Hornbuckle stated. “She has a strong leg and is a legitimate threat from 35 yards and in. Sam will also give us another capable performer in both the backfield and midfield.” Any 2009 newcomer will be hard pressed to match the impact that sophomore goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus had in goal a season ago. As a freshman, the San Leandro, Calif. native played every minute, posted a Southland single-season record tying 0.67 goals against average and recorded nine shut-

outs. Freshman Cassie Northrup will provide depth in the net. “Lacey was tremendous as a freshman and will only continue to get better,” Hornbuckle said. “Her size and athleticism, combined with her communication skills make her one of the premier goalkeepers in the Southland Conference. Cassie will compete for time in goal. We’re very fortunate to have two quality keepers on the roster. The Lady Lions open their 2009 schedule on Aug. 21, hosting Alabama State at 4:30 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. That matchup kicks off a non-conference schedule that includes home matches with Troy (Aug. 28), Jacksonville State (Sept. 6), Arkansas-Little Rock (Sept. 18), LouisianaLafayette (Sept. 20) and Southern (Sept. 27), as well as road trips to Southern Miss (Aug. 30), Grambling (Sept. 11) and LouisianaMonroe (Sept. 13). Southeastern opens Southland Conference play on Oct. 4, hosting Nicholls at 1 p.m. UTSA (Oct. 16), defending league champion Texas State (Oct. 18), McNeese State (Oct. 30) and Lamar (Nov. 1) will also visit Hammond during league play. The Lady Lions will head on the road to face league foes Sam Houston State (Oct. 9), Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 11), Central Arkansas (Oct. 23) and Northwestern State (Oct. 25). The Southland Conference Championships are scheduled for Nov. 5-8 on the Northwestern State campus in Natchitoches. Although the Lady Lions are picked to finish sixth in the standings, Hornbuckle believes his team has an opportunity to compete for its sixth league title. “The league race will be wide open once again this year,” Hornbuckle commented. “We know every match in Southland Conference play will be extremely competitive. We have to concentrate on being prepared to perform at our highest level match in and match out.”

12th Year at Southeastern School Career Record:⇣116-73-23 Overall Career Record:⇣126-80-25 Maryville (Tenn.)⇣College ‘91
Since taking over as head women's soccer coach in 1998, Blake Hornbuckle has kept Southeastern at a model of consistency, not just in the Southland Conference but in the state of Louisiana. A three-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and two-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the school's alltime leader in victories with 116, Hornbuckle has guided Southeastern to a Southland Conference tournament title, four regular-season crowns and six SLC Tournament championship game appearances. Hornbuckle took over a program that had compiled a 15-40 record before his arrival and has helped Southeastern up their all-time mark to above the .500 mark at 131-113-23. Hornbuckle has a 116-73-23 record in 11 seasons as the Lady Lions head coach. In the past eight seasons, the Lady Lions have won 84 matches, including a school-record 15 wins in 2003, when the Lady Lions earned their second straight Southland Conference regular season title and third in the last five seasons. After leading the 2003 squad to a 15-2-4 record and a undefeated 9-0-3 SLC mark, Hornbuckle was named LSWA Coach of the Year for a third time. Hornbuckle guided the Lady Lions to a 12-win season in 2002. In 2006, he was named SLC Coach of the Year, guiding the team to an 11-4-4 record and 5-0-3 league mark. The Lady Lions' 2006 league title was its fourth regular season championship in school history. Hornbuckle's success has been evident on the field as he has produced 71 allconference players, 44 All-Louisiana selections, three conference and three Louisiana players-of-the-year, five conference newcomer-of-the-year, five Louisiana newcomer-of-theyear and three SLC and state of Louisiana freshmen-of-the-year athletes. Among the players under his tutelage were CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-District selection Kim Kwolek, who was named the 1999 recipient of the F.L. McDonald Academic Scholarship, given to the female student-athlete in the Southland Conference with the highest grade point average.

In 2003, forward Kendra Oney became the first player in Southland Conference history to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine All-Central Region Team and was selected the SLC Player of the Year. In addition, midfielder Alexis Tramacchi was named the SLC Women's Soccer StudentAthlete of the Year. In 2006, Kari Yost was named both Southland Conference Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. In his first season as head coach, Hornbuckle took the Lady Lions to the SLC Championship Game where they defeated host Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, to cap an 8-10-2 campaign. For his efforts, Hornbuckle was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year. The 1999 squad posted a 7-2-3 mark in SLC games during the season and won the conference's regular-season title for the first time in school history. Along the way to 11 victories, Hornbuckle's crew ripped off a 13-game unbeaten streak (9-0-4), which was fifth-best in the nation, and finished with a final record of 11-4-5. For his leadership, Hornbuckle was named as the 1999 Coach of the Year by both the LSWA and the Southland Conference. The Lady Lions continued their winning ways in 2000, establishing a school record for wins (13). Seven players earned AllConference honors with Cory Cochrane earning Freshman of the Year honors by both the Southland Conference and LSWA, giving the Lady Lions three straight honorees by both organizations. In 2001, Southeastern advanced to the SLC championship match for the fifth straight year. Senior Becca Weingartner became the school's all-time leader in points, goals and assists and became the first player to be named First team All-SLC four times. The 2002 squad won the SLC regular season title and set school records for goals (58), goals per game (2.76), points (167) and assists (51). Hornbuckle's squad featured five All-SLC performers and three All-Louisiana selections, led by transfer Kim McNally. McNally rewrote the school and SLC record books on the way to earning SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors.

Ross entered the coaching ranks after a tremendous playing career at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. The Midwest City, Okla. native was named the American Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year four times and received All-Region honors as both a freshman and junior. In her career, she tallied a school-record 73 goals and 163 points.

The two-time Gene Day Award winner, given to Austin College’s most outstanding female athlete, Ross also served as the women’s soccer team captain for three seasons and worked as a student athletic trainer for her final three years. A tremendous student, Ross was named to the Verizon Academic All-American team as a senior and earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and exercise and sports science. Prior to coming to Hammond, Ross also completed her graduate studies at VCU, earning a master’s degree in health and movement science.

All-Time Top Performers The Southeastern women’s soccer program began from scratch in 1995 and suffered through a winless inaugural season. Since then, with the help of 11th year head coach Blake Hornbuckle and a steady influx of talented players, the Lady Lions have become one of the most successful programs in the Southland Conference, the state of Louisiana and the Central region. The following 12 players have been the top stars in school history.

Baldwin, currently the head men’s golf coach, will assume additional duties as Athletic Director until a permanent director is selected. Baldwin, a graduate of Southeastern, is entering his 22nd season with the Lions as golf coach. Under his leadership, the program has been consistently competitive in the Southland Conference and nationally, with the Lions ranking annually among the top 75 out of 300 Division I golf programs in the country. overall since the tournament's inception in 1992. The highlight of Baldwin’s tenure at Southeastern came when he guided the Lions to its first Southland Conference Golf Championship in 1998, leading the team to a 37-stroke victory and qualifying for the NCAA Championships, where Southeastern finished 23rd in the nation. A native of Goodrich, Michigan, Baldwin has been associated with the Southeastern golf program since joining the team as a freshman in 1983. He was a four-year letter winner at Southeastern and served as team captain in his senior campaign while leading the team in stroke average. Following graduation, Baldwin served as an assistant golf professional at Bay Tree Resort in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. He soon returned to Hammond to assume the head coaching duties in August of 1988 as one of the youngest Division I head coaches in the country (22 years, 11 months). He quickly established himself as a winner by guiding the team to a schoolrecord four tournament championships. Baldwin is the father of two daughters, Brienne and Hailey.

Southeastern Soccer Complex
The Southeastern Soccer Complex, opened in 2002, has become one of the finest facilities in the region.
Opened in 2002, the Southeastern Soccer Complex provides the Lady Lions with one of the top facilities in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. Located on the university’s North Campus, the 1,000-seat facility features a digital LED scoreboard and a top-of-the-line sound system. In addition to being used for Southeastern matches and practices, the Southeastern Soccer Complex also hosts several camps throughout the area. The field has also given the Lady Lions a definite “home-field” advantage, as Southeastern has recorded a 35-17-9 record in its first six seasons playing at the facility. “The opening of the Southeastern Soccer Complex was a big step in the right direction for our program,” head women’s soccer coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “The field has a great root system and is one of the better playing surfaces in the area. With a few added amenities, we will have a first-class facility that the community and university can enjoy, that provides a showcase for North Campus and aids the future of our program.” The newest additions to the facility are on-line for the 2009 season. A new permanent structure that covers the benches and press area, as well as serves as a film tower has been added.
31
One of the nicer features is the grassy berm located on the left side of the Southeastern Soccer Complex entrance. During Lady Lion home games, Southeastern students and fans are known to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the view from the berm. Plans for adding a second berm on the right side are in place. In its inaugural season, the Southeastern Soccer Complex played host to the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament, marking the first time Southeastern had hosted a SLC postseason event. Southeastern also served as the host site for the 2004 and 2005 SLC Tournaments. In recent years, one of the priorities of Southeastern Athletics has been the improvement and renovation of the teams’ facilities. The Southeastern Soccer Complex is a prime example of that priority. In 2004, a concrete entrance way has been laid, as well as a concrete pad for the benches and press row area.
