2009-10 Year In Review
T
he Southeastern Louisiana University men's golf program has been in good hands since veteran coach Tim Baldwin took over the reins in 1988. One of the more consistent golf programs in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana, the 2009-10 Lion squad will go down as one of the best in the school's history. The 2009-10 Lions, with a lineup that consisted mainly of two juniors, a sophomore and two freshmen, claimed their third Southland Conference title since joining the league in 1998 and earned their fourth trip to the NCAA Regionals in the process. Posting a team scoring average of 290.45, the lowest mark in Baldwin's tenure, Southeastern captured four tournament championships and remained steady in the GolfStat and Golfweek national rankings. Paced by returning letterwinners Cedric Scotto, Rasmus Astrand and Patrick Solberg, Southeastern got off to a fast start in the fall with a season-opening win, a second-place finish and a strong showing at the David Toms Invitational. Led by one of the top freshman tandems in the country, Southeastern
captured its first league title in a decade with an 11-stroke victory, with Alvaro Arizabaleta claiming medalist honors and Philipp Westermann earning a fourthplace finish. Southeastern got off to a fast start in opening the fall season posting a victory at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate before a second-place showing at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Invitational. Cedric Scotto, the 2009 Southland Conference Golfer of the Year, led Southeastern in the first two events, posting a 54-hole best 204 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate before shooting a 210 and claiming medalist honors at Squire Creek. Southeastern's third event saw the Lions at the LSU/David Toms Invitational, competing against a rugged field that included five teams in the national polls. The Lions posted their second-lowest round in school history (275) while Arizabaleta gave the Lions a glimpse of the future in his second career event. Arizabaleta, who finished in the top 10 in his second consecutive event, fired a 54-hole total of 210, including a low round of 66, to lead Southeastern to a fifth-place finish.
Southeastern closed out the fall season, hosting the annual Carter Plantation Intercollegiate - the first of two tournaments on its home course. The Lions opened the spring with a second-place finish at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational with Westermann claiming medalist honors in his collegiate debut. Westermann, who finished as the overall scoring leader (72.10), opened his career with top-five finishes in his first five events and added to a potent lineup that included Scotto, Arizabaleta, Astrand and newcomer Horacio Leon. The Lions earned a seventh-place finish at the UNO/Mardi Gras Invitational, facing a solid field that featured nationally-ranked San Diego, North Carolina State and Wichita State. Westermann continued his strong start for the Lions with a fifth-place performance, nine shots behind medalist Alex Ching of USD and three strokes behind NC State’s Brad Revell. After a fourth-place finish at the Louisiana Classics, Southeastern posted consecutive victories beginning with a one-stroke victory over Ole Miss at the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic. Southeastern rallied from a six-
The trio of Cedric Scotto (left), Alvaro Arizabaleta (center) and Philipp Westermann (right) helped Southeastern to its third overall Southland Conference Championship, and its first since 2000. Scotto and Arizabaleta became the first Southeastern duo to claim Southland Conference Golfer of the Year honors in consecutive years while Westermann was named the league's Freshman of the Year after joining the team in January.

Southeastern claimed four tournament titles in 2009-10, including its third Southland Conference Championship
stroke deficit after two rounds to claim the inaugural tournament with Scotto claiming medalist honors. The Lions came back one week later to claim the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic, rallying from a two-shot deficit to claim their third event of the season. Westermann earned a fifth-place finish for the Lions after firing a 2-over-par 74 to finish at 215 while Leon finished tied for 11th at 219. After its final tuneup at the BancorpSouth Intercolleigate, Southeastern overcame a slow start on its home course and cruised to the Southland Conference title. The Lions fired a low score of 283 in the final round and claimed their first league title first since a one-stroke win
over UTSA in the 2000 Championships. Arizabaleta, who claimed the overall lead after shooting a 5-under-67 in the second round, carded a 3-under 69 in the final round to win medalist honors by eight strokes. The freshman, who became Southeastern’s third player to claim medalist honors (joining Bill Sherman in 1998 and Cedric Scotto in 2009), was the only golfer in the 50-player field to finish below par as he recorded an 8-under 208. With the majority of the team returning, the future remains bright for Baldwin and the Lions.

CARVELL REPEATS AS ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR Former Southeastern Louisiana University golf standout Matthew Carvell was one of 108 Division I golfers across the country named Thursday as a Cleveland Golf/ Srixon All-America Scholar in a release by the organization. The selection of Carvell, a two-time recipient, marked the fifth consecutive year a Southeastern golfer was named to the team. Former Lion Brett Bergeron earned All-America Scholar honors in 2006 and 2007 and was joined by Hugo Leon (2006) and Anders Hofvander (2005). A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Carvell became the first player in school history to lead the team in scoring average all four years after posting a 73.57 clip. The 2008 SLC Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, Carvell earned All-SLC honors for the fourth consecutive year and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Regionals. The 2006 LSWA Freshman of the Year and a three-time All-LSWA selection, Carvell opened the 2008-09 season in impressive fashion, becoming the seventh golfer in NCAA history to shoot a 60 when he accomplished the feat in the first round of the Aldila/Scenic City Invitational. Carvell, who is one of three players to shoot a 12-under-60, set the course and tournament record in claiming medalist honors.

Carter Plantation - Home of the Lions
Carter Plantation, a new David Toms’ Signature course located just minutes from Hammond in Springfield, La., is destined to become one of the best layouts in the State. Through a partnership with the Athletics Department, Carter Plantation is the new home for Lions’ Golf
C
arter Plantation is home to PGA championship and Louisiana native David Toms' first signature design and the course is the recent recipient of Golf Magazine's "Top 10 Courses You Can Play". The spectacular 18-hole, 7,000-plus yard, par72 golf course winds through three distinct Louisiana landscapes - live oak flats, cypress wetlands, and upland pine forests. Carter Plantation is an honored member of the Louisiana Audubon Golf Trail. Following a strict evaluation process including course playability, conditioning, amenities and customer service, The Louisiana Golf Commission moved to add the course to the nationally recognized trail. As a member of the trail, Carter Plantation is part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf Courses, a program dedicated to protecting the environment and preserving the heritage of the game of golf. In addition to meeting Audubon Golf Trail criteria, Carter Plantation is equipped to professionally cater group and tournament outings with expert PGA of American service standards. The visually stunning daily fee course has a Louisiana Golf Association slope rating of 140 and a course rating of 74.4 from the championship tees. Both the front and back nines consist of two par-3s, five par-4s, and two par-5s. Eighty-six strategically placed bunkers offer surprise and challenge to the golfer. Carpeted with Tifeagle on the greens and Tifsport on the rolling fairways, each of the holes offers four or five tee positions, with water coming into play on 11 of the holes. Great effort has been made to preserve the plantation's native wildlife habitats, and indigenous grasses and plants have been extensively incorporated into the landscaping. A double-ended driving range, three practice greens, and practice bunkers are additional features of the course.

B
art Bellairs, former director of intercollegiate athletics at Savannah State University in Savannah, Ga., and a senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute was named the 15th Director of Athletics at Southeastern on Nov. 24, 2009. Bellairs succeeds Joel Erdmann, who accepted a similar position at the University of South Alabama in August. Southeastern men’s golf coach Tim Baldwin has served as interim director since Erdmann’s departure. “We are excited to welcome Bart Bellairs to our staff,” said President John L. Crain. “He has a broad range of accomplishments in athletic administration and shares Southeastern’s focus on the ‘student’ part of the student-athlete equation. He has a proven track record in inspiring his athletes and staff to achieve their full potential, whether in the classroom or in athletic competition. And he has experience in handling marketing, promotion, fundraising and budgetary issues, important skills in these days of tightened finances.” “I liked what I saw at Southeastern from the start but when my wife Jacki and I met the people, we knew we had found a home,” Bellairs said. “My whole life I
have spent time in college towns; growing up, as a coach, and as an administrator, and I have been blessed by living in some great places. When I started preparing for the interview I was very impressed with the campus and the attention Southeastern paid to supporting the students; but when I met the people -- the faculty, coaches, and members of the community – I wanted to be a part of it.” At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 21 regular-season or tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, two in men’s basketball and two in men’s golf. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins. Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va.
Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. S
outheastern is the third largest university in Louisiana, offering 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs that are nationally accredited. Southeastern now offers five new post-graduate degree programs, including the university’s first doctoral program in Educational Leadership and unique master’s degree programs in Integrated Science and Technology, Organizational Communication, Applied Sociology, and the Master of Arts in Teaching. Our classes are small in size, interaction is high, and faculty, not graduate students, teach 99 percent of our classes. Southeastern also is one of the major providers of distance education among state universities. Our main campus and satellite centers in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany and Livingston parishes are equipped to handle e-learning activities, and students have access to computer labs in classroom buildings, residence halls, the War Memorial Student Union and the Sims Memorial Library. A Student Help Desk is available by phone, and Student Productivity Services allows students to check out laptops, external drives, digital cameras, and other equipment. The Southeastern Channel, Southeastern’s education access cable channel operated in cooperation with Charter Communications and airing in several area parishes, offers original programming and telecourses that can be taken for college credit. Southeastern’s Honors program offers an alternative academic track in all departments and majors, and our Study Abroad program allows our students to explore the globe. Southeastern provides the opportunity for all its students to be successful in whatever they choose to do. In-
ternships, undergraduate research opportunities and service learning programs help prepare students with real-world learning experiences. Southeastern Alumni are successful in all areas of business, government, and entertainment. Internationally and nationally recognized Southeastern alumni include ABC “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, U.S. Federal Judge James Brady, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo. Founded in 1925, Southeastern’s campus and facilities have grown to meet the needs of its students in today’s technological environment. In recent years, Southeastern has undergone a $140 million construction program that has transformed the campus, including new residential facilities, classroom and lab buildings, and a student activity center. Yet our campus still maintains its southern Louisiana charm, nestled in ancient oaks, pines, magnolias and camellias. Southeastern’s Turtle Cove Environmental Research Center, located at Pass Manchac, offers students an ideal facility for wetlands research. In recent years, Southeastern has received nearly $3 million in federal funds to enhance environmental research programs at the facility. Another important benefit provided by Southeastern is our textbook rental system. Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation where you can rent, not buy, your textbooks. At Southeastern, you pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semester, and simply return your books at the end.You will still have to purchase some paperbacks and workbooks, but you’ll save a bundle in comparison to buying all your textbooks and then selling them back at a fraction of their cost. Southeastern provides a wide range of health services
on campus. Southeastern’s Health Center has full-time nurses Monday through Friday for minor incidents, and if your case is a bit more serious, physicians make “campus calls” every afternoon to diagnose and treat minor illnesses. Our Counseling Center provides individual or group counseling to help our students to get back up when stressful times in college or life in general gets them down. Career Services provides career and educational counseling, help in choosing a major and finding a job. Southeastern’s intramural and recreation program includes activities from group fitness programs to flag football. Tennis courts, a swimming pool and Southeastern’s new 85,000 square foot facility, the Claude B. Pennington Jr. Student Activity Center, also provide students plenty of other opportunities to stay fit and healthy. With more then 80 organizations, every Southeastern student can find a niche. Our school newspaper, The Lion’s Roar, and our yearbook, Le Souvenir, welcome students interested in journalism. KSLU, Southeastern’s radio station and the Southeastern Channel provide experience for students who want to go on the air, just for fun or for on-the-job-training. Dynamic organizations such as the Campus Activities Board and Residential Services sponsor fun events like Gumbo Ya-Ya serving up tons of gumbo in the fall. Homecoming in October is a weeklong celebration full of zany student fun and games, a huge bonfire and spirited parade. When strawberries ripen in local fields, the sweetest and juiciest star in their own “Strawberry Jubilee,” which also includes cool games, hot bands, and free eats like red beans and rice and the biggest strawberry cake you’ve ever seen.
