2010 Season in Review Armed with a roster of four freshman and four sophomores, the Southeastern Louisiana women’s tennis team returned to the Southland Conference Tournament for the sixth time in the past seven years.
Chelini, who earned All-Louisiana honors for the second straight season, moved to the No. 1 position to replace Velkovska. The Bordeaux, France native finished with a 12-9 record and 7-4 mark in league action.
The Lady Lions finished the 2010 campaign with an 8-14 record and a 4-7 record in Southland Conference play. Led by sophomores Audrey Chelini and Morgane Dadot, Southeastern took the first step towards returning to the Southland Conference elite. In recent years, the Lady Lions won league regular season titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008, while earning the conference’s automatic bid in the NCAA Championships with tournament crowns in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Chelini was backed up by Dadot, who was the team’s most improved player. After finishing 10-10 as a freshman in 2009, the Reunion, France product finished with a teambest 15-6 mark in singles action. Starting the season at No. 4, Dadot gradually moved up to No. 2 as the season progressed.
The last link to that recent run of success - multi-time All-Southland choice Iva Velkovska – completed her eligibility in 2009. However, Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes believes the foundation of Chelini, Dadot and freshman Camille Pilon has the potential to help bring the program to similar heights in the future.
`The two Lady Lion veterans were joined by newcomer Pilon. In her first season with the Lady Lions, Pilon, who hails from Orleans, France, won three of her last four matches and finished the spring with an 11-9 singles mark.
“We went through some growing pains early in the season, but that was to be expected with such a young team,” Hayes commented. “I really liked what I saw from our team as the season progressed. The attribute that made this group fun to coach was their work ethic. They never gave up and always gave their best effort. That attitude combined with added experience will help us greatly in the future.” The strength of the Southeastern team was its play at the top half of the singles draw.

2010 Season in Review The doubles point was extra vital for the Lady Lions in 2010. All but one of Southeastern’s victories came in matches in which it won the doubles point. Sophomores Annika Hanke and Mia Hagiu teamed for a team-best nine doubles victories and posted a 5-4 record against Southland Conference competition. The Lady Lions started the season 2-5 with a pair of 7-0 victories over non-conference foes Alcorn State and Jackson State. Southeastern picked up their first Southland Conference victory on March 2, winning at UTSA, 4-3. Chelini, Dadot and Pilon each picked up singles wins to key the Lady Lion triumph. A pair of losses followed the win, but Southeastern bounced back to win four of its next five matches in a key stretch of the season. The important wins for the Lady Lions
were a pair of 5-2 triumphs over league rivals Nicholls and Stephen F. Austin. The win over SFA was particularly key, as the Lady Lions bounced back from dropping the doubles point for the only time during the season. Down 1-0, Southeastern roared back with five singles wins. Chelini won in a super tie breaker to go with straight set wins by Dadot, Pilon, freshman Nina Schmied and freshman Isabel Brito. Singles victories by Chelini, Dadot and Pilon pushed Southeastern to a 4-0 victory over Central Arkansas that secured a postseason spot for the Lady Lions. In the first round of the tournament, Dadot powered to a 6-0, 6-0 rout of UT Arlington’s Katarina Micochova, but the second-seeded Lady Mavs ended the Lady Lions’ season with a 4-1 defeat.

Southeastern head women’s tennis coach Jason Hayes recently completed his ninth season at the helm of the Lady Lions’ tennis program. During his tenure, he has developed the program to one of the elite in the Southland Conference. In his nine years with the Lady Lions, Hayes has been earned seven Coach of the Year awards. He has been named the Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year and Louisiana Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2006, he became the second person in league history to be named the SLC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year in the same season. In 2008, he became the first coach in league history to be named SLC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year honors three straight times. Hayes has a 228-160 record in his nine years with Southeastern. The men’s team, which Hayes coached from 2002-09, posted a 102-78 mark under the Paris, Ky. native, while the Lady Lions have recorded a 126-82 mark. Under Hayes, the Lions and Lady Lions have combined for 47 All-Southland Conference and 34 All-Louisiana selections. Hayes has lead his players to two Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year awards, one Louisiana Women’s Tennis Player of the Year award, two Louisiana Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year awards, one Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year award and one Louisiana Newcomer of the Year award. In 2007, Hayes guided two-time SLC Player of the Year and the school’s all-time career singles victory leader Emilija Arnaudovska to the NCAA Individual Championships, becoming the first player in school history to compete in that event. His work with the women’s team has been impressive, as he developed the Lady Lions into the premier program in the Southland Conference. After the team finished 2-19 in his first season, Hayes guided the team to back-to-back double-digit win seasons. In 2003, the team improved to 12-8 and barely missed the postseason tournament. The Lady Lions would only have to wait one more season to head back to the postseason, as in 2004, the Lady Lions returned to the SLC Tournament for the first time since 2001.
Southeastern’s rapid ascent continued in 2005, as a team featuring six freshmen finished second in the regular-season standings and earned their first ever NCAA Tournament berth by winning the SLC Tournament. The 2005 freshman class would go on to post a 84-17 record in their four seasons with the Lady Lions, with five members ranking in the school’s career top 10 in terms of singles victories. The Lady Lions made return trips to the NCAA Championships in 2006 and 2007, sweeping the SLC regular season and tournament titles. Southeastern won a third straight regular season title in 2008, running their win streak versus league opponents to 48 matches. After missing the tournament in 2009 due to playing the majority of the season with five players, the Lady Lions returned to the postseason in 2002. After posting a 6-16 record in Hayes’ first season, the men’s team put together four straight top-three Southland Conference finishes and winning seasons from 2003-06. In 2003, the Lions finished second in the SLC, their highest finish in school history. In 2004, Hayes’ squad was 11-9 and went into the final match of the season with a shot at the SLC regular-season crown. In 2005, Southeastern finished with a 16-10 overall record and advanced to the SLC semifinals for the third straight season. In 2006, the Lions earned a share of the SLC regular season title – the first in school history – finishing with a 16-4 overall record and again advancing to the SLC semifinals. After an injury-marred 2007 led to a 10-11 record, Hayes’ troops bounced back with an 18-9 finish in 2008 and returned to the SLC semifinals. Both the men’s and women’s teams also have excelled in the classroom under Hayes. This season, seniors Vladimir Paunic and Nina Knavs became the 10th and 11th, respectively, Academic All-Americans in school history. Both Paunic and Knavs were selected the Southland Men’s and Women’s Tennis Student-Athletes of the Year. In 2006, Ondrej Krivka and Knavs were named SLC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Student-Athletes of the Year. The Lions and Lady Lions have placed 24 players on the SLC All-Academic team and eight players on the Academic All-District team during

handling marketing, promotion, fundraising and budgetary issues, important skills in these days of tightened finances.” “I liked what I saw at Southeastern from the start but when my wife Jacki and I met the people, we knew we had found a home,” Bellairs said. “My whole life I have spent time in college towns; growing up, as a coach, and as an administrator, and I have been blessed by living in some great places. When I started preparing for the interview I was very impressed with the campus and the attention Southeastern paid to supporting the students; but when I met the people -- the faculty, coaches, and members of the community – I wanted to be a part of it.”
Bart Bellairs Bart Bellairs was named the 15th Director of Athletics at Southeastern Louisiana University on Nov. 24, 2009 after serving in the same capacity at Savannah State University. A former senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs succeeds Joel Erdmann, who took a similar position at South Alabama. “We are excited to welcome Bart Bellairs to our staff,” said President John L. Crain. “He has a broad range of accomplishments in athletic administration and shares Southeastern’s focus on the ‘student’ part of the student-athlete equation. He has a proven track record in inspiring his athletes and staff to achieve their full potential, whether in the classroom or in athletic competition. And he has experience in

Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s AllSports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics suc-

Why SOUTHEASTERN? Southeastern is the third largest university in Louisiana, offering 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. All of Southeastern's graduate programs and 97% of undergraduate programs are nationally accredited. Southeastern now offers five new post-graduate degree programs, including the university’s first doctoral program in Educational Leadership and unique master’s degree programs in Integrated Science and Technology, Organizational Communication, Applied Sociology, and the Master of Arts in Teaching. Our classes are small in size, interaction is high, and faculty, not graduate students, teach 99 percent of our classes. Southeastern also is the second largest provider of distance education among state universities. Our main campus and satellite campus sites in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany and Livingston parishes are equipped to handle e-learning activities and students have access to computer labs in classroom buildings, residence halls, the War Memorial Student Union and the Sims Memorial Library. A Student Help Desk is available by phone, and Student Productivity Services allows students to check out laptops, external zip drives, digital cameras, and CD burners. Southeastern attracts highly qualified students through a competitive scholarship package based on ACT scores and high school GPAs. Any beginning
freshman with an ACT of 24 or higher and a 3.0 GPA is awarded an academic scholarship, some of which include coverage of housing costs. The Southeastern Scholars Program allows high school students in any classification with an ACT 24 or higher and a 3.0 GPA to enroll in Southeastern classes and receive a scholarship of up to six hours of tuition. The Southeastern Channel, Southeastern’s education access cable channel, went on air on area cable stations in summer 2002, and offers original programming and telecourses that can be taken for college credit. Southeastern's Honors program offers an alternative academic track in all departments and majors, and our Study Abroad program allows our students to explore the globe! Alumni of Southeastern are successful in all areas of business, government, and entertainment. Internationally and nationally recognized Southeastern alumni include former ESPN sportscaster Robin Roberts, Federal Judge James Brady, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo. Founded in 1925, Southeastern's campus and facilities have grown to meet the needs of its students in today's technological environment. In recent years, Southeastern has undergone a $90 million construction program that has transformed the campus, including new residential facilities, classroom and lab buildings, and a student activity center. Yet our campus still maintains its southern Louisiana charm, nestled in ancient oaks, pines, magnolias and camellias. Southeastern's Turtle Cove Environmental Research Center, located at Pass Manchac, offers students an ideal facility for wetlands research. Southeastern has received nearly $3 million in federal funds to enhance environmental research programs at the facility. Another important benefit provided by Southeastern is our textbook rental system. Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation where you can rent, not buy, your textbooks. At Southeastern, you pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semester, and simply turn your books back in at the end. You will still have to purchase some paperbacks and workbooks, but you'll save a bundle in comparison to buying all your textbooks and then selling them back at a fraction of their cost. Southeastern provides health services on campus. Southeastern's Health Center has full-time nurses Monday through Friday for minor incidents, and if your case is a bit more serious, physicians make "campus calls" every afternoon to diagnose and treat minor illnesses. Our Counseling Center provides individual or group counseling to help our students to get back up when stressful times in college or life in general gets them down. Career Services provides career and educational counseling, help in choosing a major and finding a job.
Southeastern's intramural and recreation program includes activities from group fitness programs to flag football. Tennis courts, a swimming pool and Southeastern's new 85,000 square foot facility, the Claude B. Pennington Jr. Student Activity Center, also provide students plenty of other opportunities to stay fit and healthy. With more then 80 organizations, every Southeastern student can find a niche. Our school newspaper, The Lion's Roar, and our yearbook, Le Souvenir, welcome students interested in journalism. KSLU, Southeastern's radio station and the Southeastern Channel provide experience for students who want to go on the air, just for fun or for on-thejob-training. Dynamic organizations such as the Campus Activities Board and Residential Services sponsor fun events like Gumbo Ya-Ya in the fall and Fais-Do-Do in the spring, serving up tons of Louisiana mudbugs, jambalaya or gumbo. Homecoming in October is a weeklong celebration full of zany student fun and games, a huge bonfire and spirited parade. When strawberries ripen in local fields, the sweetest and juiciest star in their own "Strawberry Jubilee," which also includes cool games, hot bands, and free eats like red beans
and rice and the biggest strawberry cake you've ever seen. Fanfare, Southeastern's annual arts festival, opens the year-long season of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts, our beautifully renovated historic theater in downtown Hammond. Fanfare and the Columbia enhance the quality of life in the north shore region by offering some of the best in dance, exhibits, films, jazz, lectures, music and theater. Featured artists have included world-renowned celebrities such as poet-actress-author Maya Angelou, actor James Earl Jones, astronaut James Lovell, and the legendary Pete Fountain, as well as our own talented students and faculty. Students also have the opportunity to hear the best and brightest new musicians, artists and actors from all over the world for free, or at specially discounted student prices. In fall 2005, the university opened the final phase of our $55 million housing program for students that features eight new stateof-the-art residence halls. All housing on campus, including the apartment-style Southeastern Oaks and the Village, features the amenities today’s students seek such as privacy, cable TV, and wireless Internet.
