Southeastern Louisiana University 2011 SEASON PREVIEW Southeastern Louisiana head coach Pete Langlois is confident that his 2011 Lady Lions are much improved and ready to be a factor in the Southland Conference. With five returning starters - a group that includes returning All-Southland performers Katie Duhe (Lutcher, La.), Jordan Logan (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Meghan Gomez (Alvin, Texas) – and a talented crop of 10 newcomers, Langlois believes that this season’s team will be in the mix for its first Southland Conference Tournament berth since 2008.

and is the team’s undisputed top threat in the middle of the order. Duhe will once again split time between second base and shortstop this season. Freshman Megan McCollum (Lafayette, La.) has impressed as second base during preseason drills, while fellow freshman Aly Williams (Katy, Texas) has shown adeptness at shortstop.

One player whose role is clearly defined is Duhe, a preseason first team All-Southland performer. The senior returns after leading the team with a .363 batting average, while also hitting five home runs and driving in 23 runs. The Lutcher native ended the season with a school-record tying 14-game hitting streak

Tamra Ladnier

Gomez, who led the Lady Lions with seven home runs in 2010, and senior Heather Grivas (Lakewood, Wash.) return as the top two catchers for the Lady Lions. However, both will be pushed by freshman Hali Westmoreland (Walker, La.), whose performance behind the plate has drawn the attention of Langlois.

“Katie’s been great for us since the day she got here and we’re going to count on her to be our leader offensively and run our middle infield, whether it’s at second or short,” Langlois commented. “We’ve been really pleased with what Megan and Aly have shown leading up to the season and both of them will get their chances to earn playing time.” Senior and three-year starter Tamra Ladnier (Hernando, Miss.) returns at first base, where she has established herself as one of the league’s premier defensive first basemen. Langlois will look to Ladnier to continue to improve her offensive output, as freshman Tori Sheppard (Houston, Texas) and her ability at the plate will have her pushing for playing time.

Katie Duhe

Over at third, junior Lauren Coniglio (LaPlace, La.) returns as the starter. Newcomers Trish Bliss (Lafayette, La.), Megan Moore (Elgin, Texas) and Kenzie Howe (Hammond, La.) are all in the running to compete for playing time at third. “We expect Lauren to be much improved both offensively and defensively,” Langlois said. “She’s going to need to be ready to go from the start, because we’ve got several players we feel comfortable putting out there at third.”

Langlois believes the increased depth of his roster, as well as the improvement of several young returners will pay dividends on and off the field. “We’re really pleased with the talent we have in place,” Langlois commented. “We have a good group of returners, but they have some pressure on them this year. They have to understand the role we are asking them to play. The biggest key for us is that everyone on this team puts the team’s needs over their individual needs.”

ly. Tori’s good enough at the plate, where even when she doesn’t spell Tamra at first, she’ll see some time at designated player.”

“Tamra’s so smooth over at first base and we count on her to run the defense,” Langlois commented. “She’s improved at the plate during her time here, but we still need more production from her offensive-

Meghan Gomez “We’re going to have a hard time keeping Meghan’s bat out of the lineup, so she could serve as the DP, play some outfield and catch for us depending on what we need,” Langlois commented. “Right now, Hali’s our best defensive option behind the plate. She’s everything we’re looking for defensively. She’ll see a lot of time back there.”

Southeastern Louisiana University 2011 SEASON PREVIEW The outfield corps is arguably the team’s deepest position. Logan returns after a 2010 campaign that saw her hit .303 and lead the team with 50 hits. Sophomore Kelsey Nichols (Alvin, Texas) hit .319 a year ago after moving into the starting lineup midway through the year. Sophomore returner Michelle Duhe (Lutcher, La.) and Centenary transfer Katie Matthews (Spring, Texas) will also see work in the outfield.

La.), Kenna Terry (Baytown, Texas) and Moore all should see action in the circle.

“We’re going with the hot hand in the outfield,” Langlois said of his most wide open position. “The speed of Jordan and Michelle make both of them dangerous at the top of the lineup. On the other hand, Katie and Kelsey both have some pop and could help us in the middle of the lineup.

“Jessie’s a special talent,” Langlois added. “She’s blessed with a lot of physical ability and she’s going to be a force immediately for us. Jessie’s also impressed us a great deal with her performance at the plate. We’re very fortunate to have her for the next four years. Kenna’s unique style is going to be a good change of pace for us and we’ve also got a lot of confidence in Vicki and Bailey to give us some good innings.”

“We should be much improved offensively, simply because we have so many more options this season,” Langlois added. “If someone’s not getting it done at the plate, we’ll have someone we can replace them with. That’s a luxury we honestly haven’t had the last year or two.”

“We think Kati and Jessie will likely be our primary weekend starters,” Langlois commented. “Kati did some good things as a freshman and she’s impressed up by coming back this spring as a better and more mature pitcher. She’s worked hard to improve and we feel like the difference is going to be evident on the field.

Southeastern Louisiana University HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS

Head Coach Pete Langlois 16th Year at Southeastern School Career Record: 333-461 Southeastern Louisiana, 1992

Delaneuville was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith the school's career leader in home runs was named first-team all-SLC and allLouisiana. As a senior, Smith was once again named all-SLC. The three first-team SLC picks in 2002 were the first-ever in the Southland for Southeastern.

After 16 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2008 squad returned to the Southland Conference Tournament after a five-year absence. Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led seven teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve. The upgrading of Southeastern's home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick fence along the foul lines and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason leading up to the 2010 season, turf was laid in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New outdoor batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’s home field is considered to be one of the top facilities in the SLC and the immediate area.

In 2010, Southeastern junior infielder Katie Duhe was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic AllAmerica team as a second team selection. In 2009, Heather Sherrill was named to the All-Southland team for the third time and became the school’s leader in hits, RBI, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases. Duhe was named to the Academic All-District VI squad, marking the third of four straight years that one of Langlois’ players made the squad.

Southeastern Louisiana University HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS Lockhart was named to the Academic AllAmerica team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team. In 2007, Ray was a first team AllSLC choice and Arica Rodriguez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The Lady Lions tied the school record with 31 victories, including a 1-0 win over No. 6 LSU that snapped the Lady Tigers' 55game winning streak versus in-state schools. Ray set school records with 21 victories and eight shutouts. Langlois also earned his 300th career win during the 2007 campaign. The renovation of North Oak Park has been one of Langlois’ top accomplishments

The 2001 season provided perhaps the finest season ever for Southeastern softball as Langlois' Lions broke or tied 14 school and individual single-season and single-game records and placed five on the Southland Conference post season teams en route to the first winning season since 1998. Most noticeably, the squad tied the all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as the Lady Lions knocked off the second and thirdseeded teams finishing with a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors. The 2002 season wasn’t quite as good as 2001, but the finish was almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fifth place league finish. The Lions didn't win quite as many games or set as many records as the '01 squad, but the 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off topseeded and tournament host Northwestern State in the semifinals to finish third in the event for the second straight year. In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Conference and set the school's all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament

while also setting numerous standards in the record books. And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor is no stranger. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge. Langlois received a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (11) and Macie (7). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008 and the couple will welcome their first son, Jacques, during the early part of the 2011 season.

Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeastern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under thenhead coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions. Langlois picked up the duties as interim head coach, finishing the season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995 and has taken over the softball program full force. Langlois has compiled an overall coaching record of 333-471 but has recorded 20+ wins in nine of his last 11 campaigns. In his time at Southeastern, he has guided two All-South Region players, 21 All-Louisiana team members, 43 all-Conference players, 14 conference allAcademic team members and three CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.
