2011 SeaSOn PRevIew After winning the fifth Southland Conference regular season championship in school history in 2010, the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team will once again be one of the league favorites in 2011. The Lady Lions return eight starters from a season ago, including six student-athletes who represented the program on the All-Southland Conference team. The returning corps plus several key newcomers have Southeastern aiming to repeat last season’s success. Southeastern tied a school record for singleseason victories, finishing with a 15-3-3 overall record and a 7-1-1 mark in conference play. Southeastern’s 2010 performance backed up a historic 2009 campaign. The Lady Lions finished second in the league standings and won the Southland Conference Tournament. That tournament victory allowed the program to make its first trip to the NCAA College Cup. While the previous two seasons saw the Lady Lions feature a young team, 2011 will see a Lady Lion squad littered with experienced performers. That added experience is one of the factors that has Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle optimistic about the upcoming season. “We played with a lot of freshman and sophomores the past two seasons and now we’re seeing that group move into their junior year,” Hornbuckle commented. “We should have a great deal of continuity now that we’ve been playing together for a couple of years. This is a tight knit group and team camaraderie will be another strength for us. “We feel like we have a good group of senior leaders, led by Kyle MacIntosh,” Hornbuckle added. “We also feel we’ll be fielding a more versatile 11 and we’re looking to attack from all areas and positions.” Chief among the Lady Lions who are moving into their junior year are forwards Maiya Cooper and Karly Dagys, who represent the league’s top returning scoring duo. After combining to become the top freshmen scoring tandem in Division I in 2009, the pair picked up right where they left off in 2010. Both Cooper (11 goals, four assists in 2010) and Dagys (six goals, nine assists) were first team AllSouthland Conference selections as sophomores. Hornbuckle cites the duo’s different methods of attack as the reason the pair combines so effectively. “Maiya and Karly are both extremely effective, but cause problems for the opposition in different ways,” Hornbuckle said. “Maiya is so
smooth and good on the ball, while Karly just mows through people with her combination of power and speed. We’re fortunate to have these two and their wonderful leadership skills.” Hornbuckle also believes that junior Megan Miller, junior Kerry McWhirter, junior Sam McNally, junior Dana Songe, junior Kailey Mills and freshman Jennifer Marzi could all provide additional options up top. In particular, Hornbuckle is quick to tout the progress of Miller, who shined during the spring. “Megan has a chance to have a breakout season if the spring is any indication,” Hornbuckle said. “Her development has been phenomenal. She’s got great speed and a good technical base.” In the midfield, Southeastern will be looking to replace 2010 senior Natalie Santana, a three-time All-Southland performer and the Southland’s career assists leader. McWhirter (eight assists in 2010), 2010 All-Southland performer Lauren Stillians (three goals, three assists) and sophomore Kelsey Salcido will be looked upon to ease the transition, along with junior Tabitha McReynolds, sophomore Jaci Teresinski, sophomore Ann Stranges , redshirt freshman Tiara Van Zeben, freshman Gabrielle DuBroc and freshman Jen Babcock. “We feel that Lauren (Stillians) and Kelsey give us stability in the midfield and we look for both of them to fill bigger roles for us,” Hornbuckle stated. “Kelsey is a great ball winner, while Lauren covers a lot of ground and has an engine that doesn’t quit. Tabitha has a great ability to switch the ball.” Teresinski is one of several players that could combine with All-Southland performers MacIntosh and sophomore Shanyce Shaw in the backfield. The Lady Lions have had the league’s top scoring defense in each of the past two seasons, but must replace four-year starters Brittany Prieto and Nicole Brannigan. MacIntosh, Shaw, Teresinski, Marzi and junior Kalyn Tanner could all see time on the back line. “We’re going to have a group of backs that will have more of an attacking mentality,” Hornbuckle said. “Kyle’s our stabilizing force with her talents and experience, while we expect Shanyce to build on an excellent freshman year. Jaci will see time at every position. She’s so strong and plays with such passion that she’ll be a key part of our attack.”

Southeastern features a talented goalkeeper tandem. Senior Lacey Bockhaus returns as the starter, having earned Southland Conference Player of the Year honors after tying her own school record with a 0.64 goals against average in 2010 and enters her final season with the conference’s career standard for shutouts. Junior Cassie Northrup is also ready to step in if needed. “Lacey’s been dominant for us,” Hornbuckle said. “Her blend of athleticism and leadership has made her invaluable to our team. Cassie is also extremely talented. She’s good off the ground and a good communicator. We’re very fortunate to have her and we expect her to continue to improve with more training and match experience.” While Hornbuckle heads into the 2011 campaign with a positive outlook, the 14th-year head coach knows to be leery of the always competitive Southland Conference schedule. “We know Southland Conference play will be a battle as always,” Hornbuckle commented. “When we get into league play, you can throw out the records. You have to be focused and ready at all times, because a five-minute span can determine the entire season.”

Head Coach blake Hornbuckle 14th Year at Southeastern School Career Record: 144-81-28 Overall Career Record: 154-88-30 Maryville (Tenn.) College ‘91
Entering his 14th season at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer program, Lady Lion head coach Blake Hornbuckle has helped the program establish itself as one of the elite programs in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. A five-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and three-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the school's alltime leader in victories with 144, Hornbuckle has guided Southeastern to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, a pair of Southland Conference tournament titles, five regular-season crowns and eight SLC Tournament championship game appearances. Hornbuckle took over a program that had compiled a 15-40 record before his arrival and has helped Southeastern up their all-time mark to above the .500 mark at 159-121-26. Hornbuckle has a 144-81-26 record in 13 seasons as the Lady Lion head coach. In the past decade, the Lady Lions have won 99 matches, including a schoolrecord 15 wins in 2003, when the Lady Lions earned their second straight Southland Conference regular season title and third in the last five seasons. After leading the 2003 squad to a 15-2-4 record and a undefeated 9-0-3 SLC mark, Hornbuckle was named LSWA Coach of the Year for a third time. Hornbuckle guided the Lady Lions to a 12-win season in 2002. In 2006, he was named SLC Coach of the Year, guiding the team to an 11-4-4 record and 5-0-3 league mark. The Lady Lions' 2006 league title was its fourth regular season championship in school history. In 2009, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA College Cup with Hornbuckle again earning LSWA Coach of the Year honors. He repeated as Louisiana’s top coach in 2010 and also earned the same honor from the SLC, as he led the Lady Lions to a Southland regular season title and a school-record tying 15 victories. Hornbuckle's success has been evident on the field as he has produced 91 allconference players, 59 All-Louisiana selections, four conference and three Louisiana players-of-the-year, five conference newcomerof-the-year, five Louisiana newcomer-of-theyear, three SLC freshman-of-the year and four Louisiana freshmen-of-the-year athletes. Among the players under his tutelage were CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-District selection Kim Kwolek, who was named the 1999 recipient of the F.L. McDonald Academic Scholarship, given to the female student-athlete in the Southland Conference with the highest grade point average. In 2009, Dana Mayer earned the F.L. McDonald Post Graduate Scholarship and received the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence. In the past four seasons, Southeastern has placed seven student-athletes on the NSCAA All-South
12
Region Scholar teams and earned Team Academic and Ethics Awards in recent seasons. In 2003, forward Kendra Oney became the first player in Southland Conference history to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine All-Central Region Team and was selected the SLC Player of the Year. In addition, midfielder Alexis Tramacchi was named the SLC Women's Soccer StudentAthlete of the Year. In 2006, Kari Yost was named both Southland Conference Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. Mayer earned Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2009. In 2010, Lacey Bockhaus was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year and was joined on the NSCAA All-Central Region team by Natalie Santana and Maiya Cooper. The Lady Lions also excelled in the classroom, as five student-athletes were named to the Southland All-Academic team, led by 2010 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Kyle MacIntosh. In his first season as head coach, Hornbuckle took the Lady Lions to the SLC Championship Game where they defeated host Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, to cap an 8-10-2 campaign. For his efforts, Hornbuckle was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year. The 1999 squad posted a 7-2-3 mark in SLC games during the season and won the conference's regular-season title for the first time in school history. Along the way to 11 victories, Hornbuckle's crew ripped off a 13game unbeaten streak (9-0-4), which was fifthbest in the nation, and finished with a final record of 11-4-5. For his leadership, Hornbuckle was named as the 1999 Coach of the Year by both the LSWA and the Southland. The Lady Lions continued their win-

ning ways in 2000, establishing a school record for wins (13). Seven players earned AllConference honors with Cory Cochrane earning Freshman of the Year honors by both the Southland Conference and LSWA, giving the Lady Lions three straight honorees by both organizations. In 2001, Southeastern advanced to the SLC championship match for the fifth straight year. Senior Becca Weingartner became the school's all-time leader in points, goals and assists and became the first player to be named First team All-SLC four times. The 2002 squad won the SLC regular season title and set school records for goals (58), goals per game (2.76), points (167) and assists (51). Hornbuckle's squad featured five All-SLC performers and three All-Louisiana selections, led by transfer Kim McNally. McNally rewrote the school and SLC record books on the way to earning SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors. Due to a rash of injuries and the loss of six starters in 2005, the Lady Lions suffered a 3-11-1 season. The Lady Lions bounced back to win the Southland Conference title in 2006, shutting out a school-record 11 opponents and allowing only two goals in conference play, while also rolling to a nine-match winning streak. In 2007, Southeastern posted another double-digit victory total, finishing 107-3 and advancing to the SLC semifinals behind SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year Kristin McDonald. In 2008, the Lady Lions posted an 11-6-2 record and advanced to the Southland Tournament semifinals. Jenna Oney was named the Southland and LSWA Newcomer of the Year. The 2009 season saw the Lady Lions finish 13-5-2, win the Southland Conference Tournament and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to national seed Florida State in the opening round. Mayer was joined on the first team AllSouthland Conference team by Southland Conference Tournament MVP Bockhaus, Louisiana Freshman of the Year Cooper, Santana and Candice Wallace. The team set or matched school and league single-season records for fewest goals allowed (13), shutouts (13) and lowest goals against average (0.63). The Lady Lions came back with a 15-3-3 showing in 2010, tying a school record for single-season victories and advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament final. Bockhaus, the league’s Player of the Year, was one of a league-high five Lady Lions on the * - at Sue Bennett (Ky.) College

The Southeastern Soccer Complex, opened in 2002, has become one of the finest facilities in the region.
Opened in 2002, the Southeastern Soccer Complex provides the Lady Lions with one of the top facilities in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. Located on the university’s North Campus, the 1,000-seat facility features a digital LED scoreboard and a top-of-the-line sound system. In addition to being used for Southeastern matches and practices, the Southeastern Soccer Complex also hosts several camps throughout the area. The field has also given the Lady Lions a definite “home-field” advantage, as Southeastern has recorded a 51-22-10 record in its nine seasons playing at the facility. “The opening of the Southeastern Soccer Complex was a big step in the right direction for our program,” head women’s soccer coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “The field has a great root system and is one of the better playing surfaces in the area. With a few added amenities, we will have a first-class facility that the community and university can enjoy, that provides a showcase for North Campus and aids the future of our program.”
One of the nicer features is the grassy berm located on the left side of the Southeastern Soccer Complex entrance. During Lady Lion home games, Southeastern students and fans are known to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the view from the berm. Plans for adding a second berm on the right side are in place. In its inaugural season, the Southeastern Soccer Complex played host to the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament, marking the first time Southeastern had hosted a SLC postseason event. Southeastern also served as the host site for the 2004 and 2005 SLC Tournaments. In recent years, one of the priorities of Southeastern Athletics has been the improvement and renovation of the teams’ facilities. The Southeastern Soccer Complex is a prime example of that priority. In 2004, a concrete entrance way has been laid, as well as a concrete pad for the benches and press row area.
The newest additions to the facility are on-line for the 2009 season. A new permanent structure that covers the benches and press area, as well as serves as a film tower has been added.
