2013 Season Outlook Armed with its deepest roster in recent years, the Southeastern Louisiana softball team is poised to make a marked improvement in 2013. A strong returning nucleus mixed with an influx of new talent has prospects looking up for the Lady Lions for the short and long term future. Southeastern Louisiana head coach Pete Langlois believes the Lady Lions will be much improved due to the aforementioned depth. “We simply have more options in every area than we have in the past few seasons,” Langlois said. “Our players will have to produce when they have the opportunity, because they’ll be able to look over to the bench and see someone who is capable of stepping in to get the job done. “One of the biggest improvements we’ve made is our team speed,” Langlois added. “Some of our top hitters heading into the season are not the best base runners. Now, we have the personnel coming off the bench who can put pressure on our opponents with their abilities on the base paths.”

Pitchers

For Southeastern to improve its position in the Southland Conference standings, the Lady Lions will need more consistent performances in the circle. Two talented newcomers join a group of three veterans that are poised for a bounce back season. The top returner in the circle for Southeastern is senior Kenna Terry (Baytown, Texas). Terry’s 5-15 record in 2012 was not indicative of her performance, according to Langlois. “We have a lot of faith in Kenna,” Langlois commented. “When you look at what she did last year, a ground ball gets fielded cleanly, a pop up gets caught or we drive in runners on base, her record is much different. We were very impressed with what she did in the fall. She knows this is her last season and she’s ready to finish strong.” The other two returners are senior Kati Morse (Ponchatoula, La.) and junior Jessie Browne (Zachary, La.). Langlois wants to see both his veteran arms put together more steady outings in the upcoming year. “Both Kati and Jessie have a lot of talent and have proven that when they are on, they have the ability to be dominant,” Langlois said. “For us to reach our potential, they both have to be ready to go. Kati pitched some nice games for us last season and we’re looking forward to seeing more of that in the coming year. Jessie has the skills to be an ace in our league. We were pleased with her showing in the fall and we think she’s poised to do some good things for us.”

The Lady Lion pitching staff will feature a pair of new faces in junior Rachael Hellyer (Folsom, Calif.) and freshman Taylor Bishop (Sugar Land, Texas). Both Hellyer and Bishop showed enough ability in the fall to gain Langlois’ confidence. “Rachael was very productive in a good junior college league and we’re looking for her to give us an additional veteran presence in the circle,” Langlois said. “Taylor shows a lot of poise as a freshman and her off-speed stuff is going to be a good weapon for us.”

Junior Tori Sheppard (Houston, Texas) and freshman Amber Sather (Kennedale, Texas) will split time at first base, with both seeing plenty of work at designated player when their counterpart is in the field. Langlois is anxious to see both bats in the lineup. “Tori is in her third year with our program and we’re confident she can put up some good numbers with a full season of at-bats,” Langlois said. “Amber came here after winning a state championship in power lifting, so we weren’t surprised with the power she displayed in the fall. What impresses us about Amber is her discipline at the plate. She’s a difference maker in our lineup.” Langlois is also excited about the return of sophomore third baseman Megan Moore (Elgin, Texas). Moore suffered a season-ending injury early in the 2012 season and was granted a medical redshirt. “Having Megan back at third is huge for us,” Langlois commented. “She’s very good defensively and we’re expecting her to be productive at the plate.” Perhaps preseason practice’s most intrigu-

Infield

A key return from injury, a big addition and a solid veteran pair up the middle has Langlois very confident in his infield corps. Leading the group is junior second baseman Megan McCollum (Lafayette, La.). The 2012 honorable mention All-Southland selection led the Lady Lions and ranked among the league leaders with a .319 batting average, 10 doubles, 22 runs scored and a .406 on-base percentage. Joining McCollum in the middle of the infield is senior shortstop Kayla Elswick (Rossville, Ga.). Elswick provided Southeastern with stellar defense and was second on the team with 21 runs scored and 21 RBI in her first season with the program out of Motlow State Community College. Sophomore Vanessa Eng (Alvin, Texas) joins the program out of Temple Junior College and will provide depth behind McCollum and Elswick. “Defensively, I’ll put the middle of our infield against anybody’s,” Langlois commented. “Mac worked hard to improve at the plate and saw the results last season. Kayla was really coming on at the plate as last season progressed and we expect her to continue to improve in that area.”

ing position battle will be at catcher. Senior Katie Doyle (Mesa, Ariz.), sophomore Hali Westmoreland (Walker, La.) and junior Caitlyn Fowler (Fort Worth, Texas) will all vie for playing time behind the plate with junior Emily Moreno (Greenwell Springs, La.) providing additional depth. Langlois likes the different attributes each player brings to the table. “Katie is the most dangerous of the group at the plate,” Langlois said. “Hali has the edge defensively, while Caitlyn is pretty solid all around and made some improvements throwing during the fall. We want to see one of them come in and separate themselves.

SoutheaStern LouiSiana univerSity SoFtbaLL However, we also are very comfortable with all three and you could see us use a by committee approach behind the plate.”

Outfield

A speedy, versatile group makes up the talented Southeastern outfield group. Langlois sees a plethora of options that could contribute. Senior Michelle Duhe (Lutcher, La.) is the top returner for the Lady Lions and will retake her place as the team’s starting centerfielder. A 2012 honorable mention AllSouthland pick, Duhe hit .281 with a team-high four triples last season and routinely wowed crowds with her diving catches in the outfield. “Michelle runs balls down in the outfield as well as anyone I’ve ever coached,” Langlois said. “She’s a great catalyst for our offense at the top of the order and we’re looking for her to continue her production as one of our senior leaders.”

“One of the big improvements we’ve made is in the outfield,” Langlois said. “We have a lot of different styles we can play out there depending on the matchup.”

The Southland Conference

While defending league champion Texas State, along with UT Arlington and UTSA, has left the Southland Conference, the league promises to prove a tough test once again for Southeastern. The Lady Lions are picked to finish eighth by both the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Langlois believes Southeastern can surprise some opponents in the coming season.

Senior Kelsey Nichols (Alvin, Texas), junior Logane Fuselier (Oberlin, La.) and freshman Katie Lacour (Port St. Joe, Fla.) are the main competitors for the corner outfield spots coming out of the fall. Nichols is a proven veteran, while Fuselier and Lacour stood out to Langlois in the fall. “Kelsey really worked hard in the fall to get back to the All-Southland player she was as a sophomore,” Langlois said. “It’s going to be hard to keep someone with the pop Logane has as the plate out of the lineup. Katie was the surprise of the fall and we’re looking forward to teaming her with Michelle at the top of the lineup to give us an added dimension.” Freshmen Sloan Jenkins (Katy, Texas), Amanda Livaudais (Belle Chasse, La.) and Arden Delany (Gonzales, La.) provide added depth in the outfield and will all have value as pinch runners.

“I really like our chances this season,” Langlois said. “We have improved our overall talent without a doubt. We just have to concentrate on doing the right things on and off the field to put ourselves in the best position to be successful.” The top eight teams in the league standings will compete in the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 9-12 in Natchitoches.

Head Coach Pete Langlois 19th Year at Southeastern Career Record: 370-525 Southeastern Louisiana, 1992 After 18 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2008 squad returned to the Southland Conference Tournament after a five-year absence. Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led seven teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve.

In 2010, Southeastern junior infielder Katie Duhe was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team as a second team selection. Duhe, a President’s Medal of Academic Excellence recipient, earned first team Academic All-Southland honors in 2011. In 2009, Heather Sherrill was named to the All-Southland team for the third time and became the school’s leader in hits, RBI, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases. Duhe was named to the Academic All-District VI squad,

The upgrading of Southeastern’s home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick fence along the foul lines and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason leading up to the 2010 season, turf was laid in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New outdoor batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’s home field is considered to be one of the top facilities in the SLC and the immediate area. Over the past 12 seasons, Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy of individual accolades including 42 all-SLC selections (six first team) and 41 all-Louisiana picks. In 2004, Summer Delaneuville was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith - the school’s career leader in home runs - was named first-team all-SLC and all-Louisiana. As a senior, Smith was once again named all-SLC. The three first-team SLC picks in 2002 were the first-ever in the Southland for Southeastern.

SoutheaStern LouiSiana univerSity SoFtbaLL marking the third of four straight years that one of Langlois’ players made the squad.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge.

In 2008, Sherrill was a first team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who became the school’s career strikeout leader as a senior, made her third appearance on the All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhart was named to the Academic All-America team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team.

Langlois received a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (13) and Macie (9). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008 and the couple welcomed their first son, Jacques, in February 2011.

In 2007, Ray was a first team All-SLC choice and Arica Rodriguez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The Lady Lions tied the school record with 31 victories, including a 1-0 win over No. 6 LSU that snapped the Lady Tigers’ 55-game winning streak versus in-state schools. Ray set school records with 21 victories and eight shutouts. Langlois also earned his 300th career win during the 2007 campaign. The 2001 season provided perhaps the finest season ever for Southeastern softball as Langlois’ Lions broke or tied 14 school and individual single-season and single-game records and placed five on the Southland Conference post season teams en route to the first winning season since 1998. Most noticeably, the squad tied the all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as the Lady Lions knocked off the second and third-seeded teams finishing with a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors. The 2002 season wasn’t quite as good as 2001, but the finish was almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fifth place league finish. The Lions didn’t win quite as many games or set as many records as the ‘01 squad, but the 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off top-seeded and tournament host Northwestern State in the semifinals to finish third in the event for the second straight year. In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Conference and set the school’s all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament while also setting numerous standards in the record books. And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor is no stranger. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions.

Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeastern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under then-head coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions. Langlois picked up the duties as interim head coach, finishing the season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995. Langlois has compiled an overall coaching record of 370525 but has recorded 20+ wins in 10 of his last 13 campaigns. In his time at Southeastern, he has guided two All-South Region players, 24 All-Louisiana team members, 47 all-Conference players, 19 conference all-Academic team members and four CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.

This is Southeastern S

ince its founding in 1925, Southeastern Louisiana University has been committed to helping the region grow and prosper. Our mission -- to lead the educational, economic and cultural development of the region – ties Southeastern intimately to the lives of the communities and residents we serve.

Quick Facts & Figures

• Enrollment: approximately 15,400 • Faculty: 637 (full and part time) • Student-Faculty ratio: 27:1 • Sites: Hammond (main campus), St. Tammany Center (Mandeville), Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center (Walker), Nursing Center (Baton Rouge), Turtle Cove Environmental Research Center (Pass Manchac) • Last fall, Southeastern had a record number of graduates exceeding 1,400.

Economic Impact

• More than $564 million annual impact. Spending by the university’s more than 15,000 students accounts for an approximate $237 million impact, while faculty and staff spending amounts to a $99 million impact. • As part of the University of Louisiana System, the impact of each dollar invested in the university is multiplied by eight as it cycles through the state economy. • More than 5,700 non-university jobs throughout the state in areas such as construction, health care and food services.

Community Impact

• Faculty and staff volunteered approximately 69,000 hours during the year, and students contributed

254,000 hours to enhancing area communities. • The Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts is a venue for a wide range of educational and entertaining events. Fanfare, the annual festival of the arts, has entertained and educated thousands of patrons over the past 24 seasons. • Multiple service-learning courses provide students the opportunity to serve their communities while participating in hands-on learning.

Academic Excellence

• Incoming freshman ACT average composite scores (21.4) last fall exceeded both the state and national averages. Highly qualified students entering Southeastern – those with ACT scores of 24 and above – have increased nearly 50 percent in the past five years. • In a report issued by the Southern Regional Education Board, Southeastern’s master’s degree program in education was rated among the best in the southern states in preparing future school principals and other education leaders. • The School of Nursing has been named the Nursing Program of the Year three times in the last 10 years by the Louisiana State Nurses Foundation. • Southeastern in 2008 was named a “Great College to Work for” by The Chronicle of High Education. The only Louisiana institution to be recognized in the survey, Southeastern received high marks in 10 different areas, including collaborative governance, job satisfaction and confidence in leadership. • Southeastern has been named to the 2010 and 2011 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Rolls, recognizing the university as a front-runner for its involvement in volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The award

“barriers” to student success. In two years, the college algebra success rate has improved by 27 percent and the withdrawal rate is steadily falling.

Successful Alumni

• Alumni of Southeastern are successful in all areas of business, government, and entertainment. Recently recognized as distinguished alums are Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, internationally recognized opera tenor Donald George, Chinese real estate and retailing entrepreneur Roger Wang, El Salvador Finance Minister William Handal, Federal Judges James Brady and Carl J. Barbier, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo, and former American Heart Association Chair Colletta C. Barrett.

Campus Living

• Campus living is convenient, smart and fun! Southeastern students have the opportunity to meet and mingle with people of different backgrounds, interests, ideas, experiences, and goals. Southeastern’s campus provides dining halls, library, bookstore, health center, swimming pool, tennis courts, student activity center and a student union with a game room, snack bars, and post office. • Southeastern’s eight state-of-the-art residence halls, plus apartment-style Southeastern Oaks and the Village features the amenities today’s students seek such as privacy, cable TV, and wireless Internet. • Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation where students rent, not buy, textbooks. At Southeastern, students pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semester, and simply return books at the end, resulting in a significant savings.

in nursing, supply chain management, engineering technology with mechanical, construction, computer science, and industrial technology concentrations, additional clinical training in radiology technology, and doctoral programs in educational leadership and advanced nursing practice. • Since opening in 2003, the Southeast Louisiana Business Center has functioned as a one-stop center designed to facilitate more than 125 new business starts, more than $130 million in capital raised for businesses; 13 incubator “graduates” creating nearly 50 jobs and millions of dollars in new capital; and the completion of more than 40 business and industry economic impact studies. • The Southeastern Small Business Development Center was recognized in 2012 with the SBDC Excellence and Innovation Award, given annually to the program that demonstrates excellence in improving value to small businesses and advancing program delivery and management through innovation. • A survey of employers who have hired Southeastern graduates indicates that more than 75 percent found Southeastern graduates were better prepared for employment when compared to other employees; all said they would readily hire another Southeastern graduate.

Workforce Development • A number of new undergraduate degrees have been specifically designed to meet area workforce demands. These include an online RN to BS degree

art Bellairs is in his third year at Southeastern Louisiana University after being named the school’s 15th Director of Athletics in November of 2009. Before arriving at Southeastern, Bellairs served in the same capacity at Savannah State University. A former senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs oversees 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 23 regular-season or tournament championships, including five regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, three in men’s golf and two in men’s basketball. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. During Bellairs’ tenure at Southeastern, the University’s athletic facilities have seen significant improvements, including renovations to locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The Southeastern baseball team saw the addition of a covered hitting facility and a new bullpen area while the Ray A. Naquin Strength and Conditioning Center installed new flooring and workout equipment. The Southeastern track and field team saw improvements with locker rooms, along with a stateof-the-art facility. In volleyball, the Lady Lions’ will move into an expanded locker room while the women’s tennis team moved into its new locker rooms and refurbished courts.

Probably the biggest improvement during Bellairs’ tenure has been the replacement of the playing surface at Strawberry Stadium. The new surface - which was installed in June 2012 - was the same surface used in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during the 2010 season. With improvements to help Southeastern on the field, there has also been steady improvement in the classroom and APR scores. Eleven of the 15 sports met or exceeded the standard of 925 set forth by the NCAA. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins. Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams. As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of
