2014-15 Southeastern Women’s Basketball

2014-15 Season Preview The Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball program began a new era on April 4, 2014, as Yolanda Moore was named the fifth head coach in the program’s 40-year history. 2014-15 will be the first season of the Moore Era, as Southeastern will be looking to return to the Southland Conference tournament for the first time since the 201112 season. Southeastern returns four starters and nine letter winners from the 2013-14 roster, which finished 8-22 overall and 7-11 in Southland Conference play. Junior forward Nanna Pool is the top returner for SLU. As a sophomore, the Magnolia, Mississippi native was one of only two players in the Southland Conference to average a double-double. Pool was named third team All-Southland Conference in 201314, leading the league with 10.7 rebounds per contest and a 56.9 field goal percentage to go with 12.0 points per game.

Other returnees for the Lady Lions are junior guard Erica Hernandez, senior wing Annessa De La Cruz, senior forward Adrina LaVern, sophomore forward Chey Stewart and sophomore forward Dani Fielder. The Southeastern roster will also include a trio of newcomers – sophomore guard Bre’ Warren, sophomore forward Gabriella Delaune and freshman guard Taylin Underwood. Warren, who spent the 2013-14 season as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will sit out the 2014-15 season.

“Nanna is an extremely talented player,” Moore commented. “We will continue working on refining her offensive skills and we’re expecting big things from her in 201415.”

Last season, Southeastern averaged a respectable 67.8 points per contest offensively. However, the Lady Lions struggled mightily defensively, allowing 78.5 points per game. Moore knows that has to change if Southeastern wants to return to the postseason and compete in the challenging Southland Conference.

Southeastern also returns one of the Southland Conference’s most productive backcourts in senior guards Symone Miller and Elizabeth Styles. Miller, a Gonzales, Louisiana native, is the team’s leading returning scorer, averaging 13.5 points per contest a season ago. She enters 2014-15 needing 205 points to become the 19th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

“If you can’t or won’t play defense, then you’re not going to play for me,” Moore said. “We have plenty of players that can score the ball, but we have to be – and are going to be – better defensively. So much of the success on defense is about effort. And looking at the film from last season, a lot of the time we felt like the effort wasn’t there. That’s going to change right away.”

Styles was third on the team with 12.1 points per game. However, the Savannah, Georgia native’s biggest role was as the team’s facilitator, as she ranked second in the Southland with 5.4 assists per game. Styles currently ranks seventh on the school’s career assists list.

Southeastern will open a challenging non-conference schedule on Nov. 14, facing Big Ten Conference opponent Minnesota. The difficult non-conference slate also includes trips to LSU, Auburn, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Moore thinks the schedule will help her new team.

“We expect Symone and Liz to have great senior years,” Moore said. “Beyond what skills they exhibit on the court, we expect those two to take on a much-needed leadership role for our team.”

“Our players are excited about the opportunity to play against top-flight competition.” Moore said. “To play on the road in those atmospheres will be a great experience for our team. Those games will give us a good gauge of where we are and prepare us well to compete in the Southland Conference.”

Southeastern will also be bolstered by the return of senior wing Jameika Hoskins, who redshirted in 2013-14 after off-season surgery. As a junior in 2012-13, the Aberdeen, Mississippi native averaged 8.7 points per game and provided Southeastern with versatility, playing positions 2-4 for SLU.

2014-15 Southland Conference Preseason Polls

“We’re excited to have Jameika back with us,” Moore stated. “Jameika has already graduated, so she’s here because she wants to do great things as a senior to help us get to where we want to be.”

Head Coach Yolanda Moore First Year at Southeastern Overall Career Record: 26-3 Ole Miss, 2002 The Yolanda Moore File Playing/Broadcasting Career - College: Ole Miss - Professional: Houston Comets (WNBA) - Fox Sports South - Women’s Colllege Basketball Analyst (2005) - Memphis Grizzlies - Postgame Radio Analyst (2007) - Professional consultant and motivational speaker - Author of “You Will Win If You Don’t Quit”, published in 2012

Coaching Record A new era of Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball was ushered in on April 4, 2014, when two-time WNBA champion and successful junior college head coach Yolanda Moore was named the fifth head women’s basketball coach in school history. Moore spent the 2013-14 season as the head coach at LSU Eunice. Taking over a program that had won 17 games combined in the previous two seasons, Moore led the Lady Bengals to a 26-3 overall record and the program’s first-ever Miss-Lou Conference championship. LSU Eunice was ranked as high as No. 22 in the NJCAA Division I national rankings, thanks in large part to the commitment to defense by the 2013-14 NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year. The Lady Bengals finished the season ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 39.9 points per game. A 2010 inductee into the Ole Miss Sports Hall of Fame, Moore was a three-time All-Southeastern Conference post player for the Lady Rebels, including earning unanimous first team All-SEC honors in her final two seasons. Moore went on to become a player in the inaugural seasons of the WNBA and was a member of the champion Houston Comets during the league’s first two years. Following her playing career, Moore put her Ole Miss degree in radio and television to work. In addition to serving as a women’s college basketball analyst for Fox Sports South in 2005, she was the postgame radio analyst for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzles in 2007. Moore also has extensive experience as both a consultant and motivational speaker. She released her first book, “You Will Win If You Don’t Quit”, in September 2012. Moore, a Port Gibson, Miss. native, is the mother of four and has a grandson.

All-Time Record vs. Opponents All-Time Record vs. Opponents NCAA INFRACTION NOTICE

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues.

During the latter months of 1976 and into the early months of 1977, a lot of things were happening in the world. In the political world, Jimmy Carter, then the Governor of Georgia, was on his way to being elected President of the United States over Gerald Ford. On the football field, the Oakland Raiders, led by a coach named Madden and a quarterback nicknamed “Snake,” were on their way to capturing Super Bowl XI. On the television, a fictitious group of high school kids called the “Sweat Hogs” were keeping us in stitches every week on “Welcome Back Kotter.” And on the silver screen, we were preparing to go to “a galaxy far, far away.”

And in Hammond, an already successful women’s basketball team was about to make history. Not just in Tangipahoa Parish or the state of Louisiana, but on the national scene. The 1976-77 AIAW Small College National Championship team is a proud highlight in Southeastern’s rich athletic history. In its third year of existence, the Lady Lions added to an already glittering array of accomplishments after going 52-4 in their first two campaigns under the ever-successful Linda Puckett. In 2006-07, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this feat.

2014-15 Southeastern Women’s Basketball

1976-77 AIAW National Champions Led by the solid all-around play of Pam Cook and the dominating inside presence of Queen Brumfield and Sarah Williams, the Lady Lions outscored their opposition by over 36 points per game and produced 15 contests in which they scored 100 or more points. Starting in impressive fashion, the Lady Lions won their first 12 games to open the season, scoring 100 or more points in seven games to earn the reputation as the nation’s highest scoring team. Southeastern suffered its first loss at the University of Texas Tournament, where it lost 80-79 to Stephen F. Austin where it missed a last second shot. In the tournament, however, Southeastern defeated Trinity University and Texas en route to the finals. That performance catapulted Southeastern into the top-15 among small colleges, a position it would remain in for the remainder of the season. The Lady Lions tallied eight consecutive wins coming out of the Texas Tournament before losing to LSU, which finished second overall in the Major College AIAW Tournament. During that stretch were victories over Louisiana Tech and a 106-69 trouncing of LSU. The 101-77 loss at LSU would be the final loss of the season for the Lady Lions as they rolled through the LAIAW Small College Tournament with ease, pounding Louisiana College and McNeese State twice. Southeastern hosted the AIAW Regional Tournament in Cefalu Coliseum and started out the tournament with a 132-50 thrashing of Central Arkansas, which still stands as the largest margin of victory in Lady Lion history. The Lady Lions came back with a convincing win over Southern Arkansas before defeating Phillips (Okla.) University, a team that finished third in the nation the previous season. For the Lady Lions, it was off to Pomona, Calif., where they would compete in the National AIAW Tournament for the second consecutive season. In 1975-76, the Lady Lions finished fifth in the nation with a 30-2 overall record. For Southeastern to improve on the 1975-76 performance, it would have to have solid play from its starters along with

its bench. After opening the tournament with a 91-50 win over Dayton, the Lady Lions knocked off previously unbeaten High Point (N.C.) University in convincing fashion, 112-85. That win advanced Southeastern to a date with defending national champion Berry (Ga.) College with a berth in the championship game on the line. Against Berry, Southeastern overcame injuries and foul trouble to key players, getting excellent play from its reserves as the prevailed, 86-81, and moved on to the championship game. In a rematch from the AIAW Region IV Tournament, Southeastern faced Phillips University fr the Small College National Championship and took a 92-76 victory giving the Lady Lions the national championship. The 1976-77 Southeastern team, which recorded 18 games with 100 or more points, still holds five single season records, including a 99.1 scoring average. Individually. five records still remain in the record books as Williams pulled down a single-game record 27 rebounds against Southern. On the season, Williams’ 13.8 rebound average is best in school history. Brumfield blocked 80 shots and Cook still holds records for steals (117) and consecutive free throws (26).

Hammond: Crossroads Of the South A

pioneering railroad town, Hammond, Louisiana, has been a staple of Northshore life since 1830 when Peter Hammond decided to call a tract of land 55 miles outside of New Orleans home. Hammond was originally from Sweden, and moved to the area to manufacture products from the resin in pine trees, and ship them to New Orleans. Railroad is the reason behind the city’s success, and in 1854, the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad pumped people and money into this small, pioneer town. A flag station just a block away from the current train depot was called “Hammond’s Crossing” and brought handfuls of new people to town. Peter Hammond was so convinced that the railroad would bring people to the city that he signed a contract with the rail company that forced the trains to stop every time they passed through Hammond. Five years after the railroad came to town, another staple in Hammond’s past arrived. Charles Emery Cate moved his family into the area in 1859 from New Orleans because of the natural springs, lush pine forests, and desirable climate. Cate immediately began to help the city grow. Cate built a factory, sold crossties, tar, and turpentine as well as laying out city streets and planting oak trees along the curbs. During the Civil War, Cate owned a shoe factory that made and shipped shoes to the

Confederate Army. His factory sent nearly 45,000 shoes to the soldiers before being found by Union Soldiers who destroyed the factory. At the turn of the 20th century, Hammond struck gold—in the form of red. With the development of the strawberry industry, Hammond saw another explosion in growth. The city became a center for growing, processing, and shipping strawberries. Boxcar loads of strawberries became a staple of the area and as trains left the city headed north, the money flowed south. Hammond prospered throughout the rest of the 20th century. Planes began flying into the area and a university came to town. Industry moved in, and with it, more people. As the interstate corridors of I-55 and I-12 developed, Hammond’s footprint did too. People are choosing Hammond because of its close proximity between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Hammond is thirty miles from Baton Rouge, and fifty- five miles from New Orleans. More shops, restaurants, and culture are less than an hour drive. Small town living with big city flare gives Hammond a lifestyle edge.

After serving four months as interim Director of Athletics, former baseball coach Jay Artigues (pictured with Greg Marten) was officially named AD at Southeastern on Oct. 14, 2013.

Athletic Administration A

fter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Artigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics on October 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season,Artigues helped build a foundation of success for the Southeastern baseball program and now is doing the same for the entire athletic department. In his first year on the job, he presided over arguably the greatest athletic year in Southeastern history. The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference championships, the most the school has ever won in a single year. The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record. Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference. Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years. Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of theYear, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of theYear, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national,

regional and conference awards.Advancing to the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted a 39-21 record and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of theYear Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of theYear for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history,Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC,Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll.
