2015-16 Season Preview

Lions out for strong finish in Narro’s 1st season The fall season was similar to a practice round for the Southeastern men’s golf team as the Lions got accustomed to new head coach Jake Narro. “For me and a lot more for these guys, last fall was more about me getting settled in and they trusting me a little bit,” said Narro, who replaced long-time coach Tim Baldwin who left for Louisiana-Monroe last summer. “To be able to call me over, and say, ‘Help me out a little bit’.” Southeastern finished in the top 10 in each of its three fall tournaments, culminating in a sixth-place finish at the David Toms Intercollegiate. And with the majority of the squad returning from a ninth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Lubbock Regional – the program’s highest regional finish – Narro is expecting further success as the spring season gets underway. “I expect us to build toward the (Southland) Conference Championship and coming down the stretch, have an opportunity to win,” Narro said. “Whether we do or don’t, we’ll let the chips fall where they may.” Southeastern does have to replace Grady Brame, a first-team All-Southland Conference selection in 2014-15. Among those returning is junior James Anstiss who earned 2015 Southland Conference and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors and was a third-team All-Southland selection after transferring in prior to the spring semester. He had a 73.3 stroke average over 21 rounds, including a tournament record 64 at the Lone Star Invitational. He had a pair of top-20 finishes in the 2015-16 fall season, then finished fourth at the Louisiana Classics in early March. Also back is senior Lawrence Allan, another third-

Southeastern junior Paul Anstiss, left, earned 2015 Southland Conference and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors and was a third-team All-Southland selection after posting a 73.3 stroke average over 21 rounds. team All-Southland selection. Allan had three top-10 finishes in 2014-15, including a third at the Southland Championships. He finished with a 73.6 stroke average in 29 rounds. Allan closed out this past fall season with a 16th-place finish at the David Toms, then finished with strong final rounds at both the USTA/Oak Hills Intercollegiate and Louisiana Classics to open the spring. Eamon Bradley is also back for his senior season. The 2013 Southland and Louisiana Freshman of the Year had a 73.9 average over 33 rounds, recording a pair of top-10 finishes. He was second at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, then tied for sixth at the Border Olympics. Junior Gustavo Leon had a 74.8 average over 11 rounds in 2014-15, tying for third at the seasonopening Sam Hall Intercollegiate. He finished in tied for 19th at the Louisiana Classics this spring.

Southeastern senior Lawrence Allan is coming off a third-team All-Southland Conference selection in 2014-15 after posting three top-10 finishes, including a third at the Conference Championships.

Junior Paul Obermann, a third-team All-Southland selection as a freshman, posted a 74.9 average over 32 rounds in 2014-15 with an eighth-place finish at the Sam Hill. He was also 22nd at the Lubbock Regional. Obermann led the Lions at the David Toms this

past fall with a tie for 12th and tied for 20th at the UTSA/Oak Hills to open the spring. Sophomore Wyatt Ott returns after playing in one event as a freshman, tying for 76th at the Louisiana Classics. Freshman William Meyers joins the Lions for 2015-16 and had a 74.83 average over six rounds in the fall. Southeastern had a habit in the fall of falling behind in the opening round, then rallying over the final two rounds. “You can’t do that,” Narro said. “You have to zoom out of the gate so that is definitely going to be a goal for us - come out of the gate fast and let’s get under pressure right at the beginning and let’s put ourselves in the heat of it.” That especially means the Southland Conference race where McNeese State, last year’s runner-up, is the favorite going into the season. “We’re going to have to play better to beat them,” Narro said. “These guys are going to have to be better three months from now. That’s good. We don’t want anything easy. We want to have to play good to win.”

Head Coach Jake Narro Southeastern Louisiana men’s golf coach Jake Narro admits to having a few butterflies when the Lions teed off for the first time at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in September. Sure, Narro was a veteran golf professional who had played in PGA Tour events in the past. But this was his first experience in coaching a collegiate squad since being named the Lions’ head coach just nine days prior. “I was a bit nervous, unsure of myself,” Narro said. “I’ve played so many tournaments in my life but I was playing. I wanted to gain some immediate credibility.” Narro takes over for long-time Southeastern head golf coach Tim Baldwin, who led the Lions to the NCAA Regionals five of the past seasons before accepting the same position at Louisiana-Monroe last summer. “Jake brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to our golf program,” Southeastern Athletics Director Jay Artigues said upon Narro’s hiring. “He will be a good role model for our student-athletes. We expect Jake to continue the tradition of excellence in the classroom and competition that our golf program has

established.” Narro said he picked up the game from his dad. But it was baseball Narro excelled in growing up until deciding to switch to golf his sophomore season in high school. Narro went on to play one season at the Jake Narro University of Southern 1st season Mississippi before going Southeastern Louisiana to work at Beau Chene (2014) Golf and Racquet Club in. Narro has also served as a professional at the Bayou Oaks Golf Club, Lakewood Country Club, Riverlands Country Club and most recently, the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. As a player, he has twice been named the Gulf States Section Player of the Year (2003 and 2012). During his career, Narro has won six Gulf States Section championships (2000, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2014).

Narro, who earned his degree in general studies from SLU in 2014, has family ties to Southeastern. His wife, Dr.Amber Narro, is an associate professor in the SLU Department of Languages and Communication, while one of his five children, Shayne, is a SLU student. The Narros are also the parents of Alex, Blane, Harris and Olivia. Over those years of both playing and teaching golf, Narro said there are things he’s ultimately learned about the game. “I’ve played in 10 Tour events and 10 to 15 Web.coms and National Club Pros, probably 25 or so really nice events,” Narro said. “And ultimately a good shot is still just a golf shot. Just because there are sky boxes and the Golf Channel and TV cameras, and David Feherty, all that’s there, it’s still just a golf shot. “If you can just settle in and make your heart beat like it is right here, right now - if you can just goof around and be yourself and have fun in those big moments, you’re going to do fine. I know who a good golfer is. I’ve seen it. They (his players at Southeastern) qualify. They’re good. I’m just trying to make them believe in that.”

2015-16 Fall Tournament Recaps Lions overcome slow start at Sam Hall HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southeastern

Louisiana men’s golf team carded the low round of the day, firing a final-round 11-under par 273 to move up to seventh place on the final day of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Southeastern vaulted five places in the final standings after shooting 11-under over the final 36 holes. The 273 by the Lions tied the first round score of tournament champion McNeese State for the lowest round of the tournament. Tuesday’s round also was the second-lowest round in program history – just one off the record of 272 set at last season’s Lone Star Invitational. The veteran Lions’ play steadily improved as the season-opening tournament progressed. After struggling to a 303 (+19) in Monday’s opening round, the Lions bounced back later in the day with an evenpar 284 before blistering the course on Tuesday. Head coach Jake Narro, who was making his debut at the helm of the SLU golf program, was impressed how his team shook off the uneven opening 18 holes. “The first round of the season was definitely bad,” Narro said. “But I was really proud of how we bounced back from that opening round. Even though today was our best round, I was probably more proud of yesterday’s second round. When you start off like we did yesterday, it’s so hard to switch gears in the middle of the day and we were able to do that and play well. Moving forward, we can build on these last two rounds, while learning from first round mistakes.” Four Lions finished under par on Tuesday, led by senior Lawrence Allan, who carded a four-under par 67. Allan’s fellow senior Eamon Bradley shot three-under par 68 over the final 18 holes, while juniors Gustavo Leon and James Anstiss both posted two-under par 69. For the tournament, Leon was SLU’s top finisher, as his even-par tournament score netted him a tie for 15th place. Anstiss (T19th, +1) joined Leon in the top 20, while Bradley (T43rd, +6), Allan (T57th, +10) and junior Paul Obermann (T64th, +12) rounded out the Lion starting five. Playing as an individual, SLU freshman William Meyers finished tied for 49th (+8) for the tournament in his collegiate debut. McNeese State (-23) ran away with the tournament, besting runner-up Louisiana-Lafayette by 15 strokes. MSU’s Robert MacIntyre (-14) claimed individual medalist honors. GLENCOE, Ill. – Southeastern Louisiana senior Lawrence Allan fired a final-round 69 to pace the Lion golf team on the final day of the Windon Memorial Monday at Lake Shore Country Club. As a team, Southeastern finished four-over par over the final 18 holes. The Lions finished with a tournament score of 864 (+12) to finish in a tie for eighth place. Allan was one of two Lions to post red numbers for Monday’s round, as junior James Anstiss notched his second consecutive 70 to close out the tournament. Anstiss, the reigning Southland Conference and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, posted his second top-20 finish in as many tries this fall. The Queenstown, New Zealand native shot even-par 213 to earn a tie for 17th place after three rounds on the par-71, 6,844-yard course in the Chicago suburbs. Lions finish strong at David Toms BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men’s golf team continued a fall-long trend of finishing strong as the Lions rallied in the final round to take sixth at the David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by LSU at the University Club on Sunday.

Southeastern climbed three spots with a final round 292 to finish with a team score of 908. The Lions were 14th following a 310 in Saturday’s first round before shooting a second round 306 to move up to ninth. “We did it again – started out terrible and finished great,” Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. “That’s what we did all semester and we kept the same theme going. We started out with the worst score of the event and ended up in sixth place. I’m thrilled with the way we hang in there.” Narro said he thought the difference between Saturday and Sunday was his team simply played better in the final round. “But I think also got a couple of good breaks here and there and hit a couple of better shots at the right time,” Narro said. “This is a golf course where there are four or five holes on the course where you have to just stand up there and hit a really good shot. Today we did it and the first round we didn’t. It’s all timing.” Defending tournament and national champion LSU maintained its second round lead, winning by 16 shots with an 864 following a final round 286. Kansas State was second with an 880. Junior Paul Obermann led Southeastern, tying Iowa State’s Nick Voke and Iowa’s Nate Yankovich for 12th with a 6-over-par 222 after shooting a final round 1-over 73. Senior Lawrence Allan finished with the Lions’ lone sub-par round of the weekend, a finalround 2-under 70, to tie for 16th with Kansas State’s Oscar Spolander and Louisiana Tech’s Hunter Glenn at 8-over 224. Allan shot 4-under on the front side with six birdies. Junior James Anstiss shot a 1-over 73 on Sunday to finish at 11-over 227, tied for 24th with Iowa’s Voramate Aussarassakorn and Iowa State’s Ruben Sondjaja. Senior Eamon Bradley tied for 59th with Louisiana-Monroe’s Velten Meyer at 22-over 238 following a final-round 4-over 76. And junior Gustavo Leon shot a 7-over 79 Sunday to come in 68th with a 26-over 242. LSU’s Eric Ricard pulled away for a sevenstroke win at 10-under 206 after firing a 4-under 68 final round. NCAA infraction notice On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 20052006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-

athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university selfreported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
