2015-16 Southeastern Women’s Basketball
Dedicated to Success Returnees providing spark in Moore’s second season Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball coach Yolanda Moore was quick to answer when asked how she has seen her team progress from her first season in 2014-15 to the start of the 2015-16 campaign. “The commitment is different,” Moore said. “The commitment level has increased from last year to this year. The desire to want to get better has improved tremendously from last season to this season with the returning players. Their commitment to working and improving their individual game is definitely improved.
inside.” Southeastern also has more depth in the backcourt with the addition of a pair of freshmen guards from the local area, Jaclyn Scholvin (Mandeville HS) and Baylie Stears (Walker HS). Another area product, sophomore Bre Warren (Northshore HS) joins the squad after sitting out last season after transferring from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Senior KaeLynn Boyd will be eligible at the end of the fall semester after transferring from Texas-Pan American in midseason in 2014-15. Those four join seniors Erica Hernandez Peaches Anderson and sophomore Taylin Underwood on the perimeter. Another newcomer, Asia Vetter, will miss the season following an injury in preseason camp.
“We had a lot of players this summer doing extra running outside of what we did as a team. We could come in here at any given time and see players working on getting shots up or working on their game without us telling them. They have a better understanding of what I expect and what we expect as a coaching staff and what it takes to actually win. You can’t do enough to just get by and I think that sunk in. With the new players coming in, they didn’t have anything to gauge it by. They came in knowing this is the way things are. You work hard for what you want around here.” Southeastern returns two starters and five letterwinners from last season’s 7-22 campaign. The Lady Lions finished 12th in the Southland Conference with a 3-15 mark. One of the highlights of the season was the play of senior forward Nanna Pool who earned honorable mention All-Southland Conference honors after averaging a team-high 11.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Moore said she is expecting even more production from the Magnolia, Mississippi native, calling her the Lady Lions’ most improved player. “Her attitude has completely changed,” Moore said. “Last year she kind of shied away from wanting the ball a lot because she played behind Aja (Gibson). She was just accustomed to letting everybody else shoot it and she would go get it off the boards. Last year we wanted her to be more of a go-to player and that was a role I don’t think she was very comfortable at. “This year she has taken on much more of a leadership role in practice and workouts and creating a really big presence for us inside. She has extended her range out to that 15-foot range, even out to the 3-point line. On the other side of the basketball, she can defend on the perimeter, even defenses guards and does a pretty good job.” Joining Pool in the front court are returning juniors Gabriella Delaune, Chey Stewart and Dani Fielder and a pair of freshmen from Georgia, Chambria Harrison and Kyle Felton. “Dani Fielder was a spark for us last year and we expect to use her a little bit more as well as Chey Stewart,” Moore said. “For Gabby (Delaune), we’re changing her position a little bit, putting her more on the wing. We’ll be able to extend the defense a lot more than we were able to do last year and we’ve also got some depth on the

Forward Nanna Pool returns for her senior season after earning honorable mention All-Southland Conference honors in 2014-15 with a team-high 11.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
2015-16 Southeastern Women’s Basketball “Erica Hernandez did a lot for us defensively and she’s going to do a lot for us defensively,” Moore said. “She and Peaches Anderson have stepped up. KaeLynn will be a senior and she got to practice with us last year so she’s already been acclimated to the system so when she’s ready to play, it’s won’t be an issue with chemistry or anything like that. Taylin Underwood is going to be Taylin. She’s a scorer and she’s gotten a lot more aggressive, a lot better on defense.” Southeastern will look to get better defense overall after finishing last in the conference in allowing 74.1 points per game. The Lady Lions ranked seventh in scoring with 63.7 points a contest but were 12th in field goal percentage at 38.1. In addition to an increased production from her backcourt, Moore is expecting it to provide more leadership both on and off the court. “I think our seniors have stepped up more with our guards and are being more vocal, being more leaders by example,” Moore said. That leadership will come into play
in a non-conference schedule that opens at 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Arkansas and includes games against Auburn, LouisianaMonroe, Jackson State and Troy at home and Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Wright State, Xavier, Florida A&M and Mississippi State on the road. “Our non-conference schedule is made by design so that our players are going to be ready for what we are going to see in conference play,” Moore said. “Our non-conference schedule is always competitive, but those first five games out of the gate are going to be a mental and physical test. But I know our players are going to be prepared.” The Southland is expected to be competitive again with regular season champion Stephen F. Austin, SLC Tournament winner Northwestern State and McNeese State all advancing to the postseason in 2014-15. Southeastern has been picked to finish 12th again by both the conference coaches and sports information directors. “It’s going to be competitive,” Moore said. “We only won three conference games last year so it was tough versus everybody we faced. I don’t expect it to be any different as far as the competitiveness and the inten-
sity we’re going to face once we get in the Southland but we have a completely different team with a completely different mindset with a completely different attitude and approach to this season. It’s going to be enjoyable. It’s not going to be easy but we’re going to be prepared.”

2015-16 Southeastern Women’s Basketball A new era of Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball was ushered in on April 4, 2014, when two-time WNBA champion and successful junior college head coach Yolanda Moore was named the fifth head coach in the program’s history. The Lady Lions took the first steps to building a winning program in Moore’s first season. In 2014-15, senior guard Elizabeth Styles became the 19th student-athlete in school history to reach 1,000 career points and the first to top both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists. In addition, junior forward Nanna Pool represented SLU on the All-Southland Conference teams. Moore spent the 2013-14 season as the head coach at LSU Eunice. Taking over a program that had won 17 games combined in the previous two seasons, Moore led the Lady Bengals to a 26-3 overall record and the program’s first-ever Miss-Lou Conference championship. LSU Eunice was ranked as high as No. 22 in the NJCAA Division I national rankings, thanks in large part to the commitment to defense by the 2013-14 NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year. The Lady Bengals finished the season ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense, holding opponents to 39.9 points per game. A 2010 inductee into the Ole Miss Sports Hall of Fame, Moore was a three-time All-Southeastern Conference post player for the Lady Rebels, including earning unanimous first team

2015-16 Southeastern Women’s Basketball NCAA INFRACTION NOTICE
On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current studentathlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”

Lady Lions win Small College title in 3rd season of existence It took only three years for Southeastern to reach the pinnacle of women’s college basketball. Under the guidance of Southeastern Hall of Famer Linda Puckett, the Lady Lions rolled to a 30-2 record in their third year of existence in 1976-77, knocking off Phillips University for the AIAW Small College National Championship. Southeastern had gone 52-4 in its first two campaigns but the best was yet to come. Led by the solid all-around play of Pam Cook and the dominating inside presence of Queen Brumfield and Sarah Williams, the Lady Lions outscored their opposition by over 36 points per game and produced 15 contests in which they scored 100 or more points. Starting in impressive fashion, the Lady Lions won their first 12 games to open the season, scoring 100 or more points in seven games to earn the reputation as the nation’s highest scoring team. Southeastern suffered its first loss at the University of Texas Tournament, where it lost 80-79 to Stephen F. Austin where it missed a last second shot. In the tournament, however, Southeastern defeated Trinity University and Texas en route to the finals. That perfor-
mance catapulted Southeastern into the top15 among small colleges, a position it would remain in for the remainder of the season. The Lady Lions tallied eight consecutive wins coming out of the Texas Tournament before losing to LSU, which finished second overall in the Major College AIAW Tournament. During that stretch were victories over Louisiana Tech and a 106-69 trouncing of LSU. The 101-77 loss at LSU would be the final loss of the season for Linda Puckett guided the Lady Lions as they rolled through the Southeastern to the LAIAW Small College 1976-77 AIAW Small Tournament with College National ease, pounding Championship. She Louisiana College was inducted into the and McNeese State Southeastern Hall of twice. Southeastern Fame in 2002 hosted the A I AW R e g i o n a l Tournament in Cefalu Coliseum and started out the tournament with a 132-50 thrashing of Central Arkansas, which still stands as the largest margin of victory in

Lady Lion history. The Lady Lions came back with a convincing win over Southern Arkansas before defeating Phillips (Okla.) University, a team that finished third in the nation the previous season. For the Lady Lions, it was off to Pomona, Calif., where they would compete in the National AIAW Tournament for the second consecutive season. In 1975-76, the Lady Lions finished fifth in the nation with a 30-2 overall record. For Southeastern to improve on the 1975-76 performance, it would have to have solid play from its starters along with its bench. After opening the tournament with a 9150 win over Dayton, the Lady Lions knocked off previously unbeaten High Point (N.C.) University in convincing fashion, 112-85. That win advanced Southeastern to a date with defending national champion Berry (Ga.) College with a berth in the championship game on the line. Against Berry, Southeastern overcame injuries and foul trouble to key players, getting excellent play from its reserves as the prevailed, 86-81, and moved on to the championship game.

Hammond: Crossroads Of the South A
pioneering railroad town, Hammond, Louisiana, has been a staple of Northshore life since 1830 when Peter Hammond decided to call a tract of land 55 miles outside of New Orleans home. Hammond was originally from Sweden, and moved to the area to manufacture products from the resin in pine trees, and ship them to New Orleans. Railroad is the reason behind the city’s success, and in 1854, the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad pumped people and money into this small, pioneer town. A flag station just a block away from the current train depot was called “Hammond’s Crossing” and brought handfuls of new people to town. Peter Hammond was so convinced that the railroad would bring people to the city that he signed a contract with the rail company that forced the trains to stop every time they passed through Hammond. Five years after the railroad came to town, another staple in Hammond’s past arrived. Charles Emery Cate moved his family into the area in 1859 from New Orleans because of the natural springs, lush pine forests, and desirable climate. Cate immediately began to help the city grow. Cate built a factory, sold crossties, tar, and turpentine as well as laying out city streets and planting oak trees along the curbs. During the Civil War, Cate owned a shoe factory that made and shipped shoes to the
Confederate Army. His factory sent nearly 45,000 shoes to the soldiers before being found by Union Soldiers who destroyed the factory. At the turn of the 20th century, Hammond struck gold—in the form of red. With the development of the strawberry industry, Hammond saw another explosion in growth. The city became a center for growing, processing, and shipping strawberries. Boxcar loads of strawberries became a staple of the area and as trains left the city headed north, the money flowed south. Hammond prospered throughout the rest of the 20th century. Planes began flying into the area and a university came to town. Industry moved in, and with it, more people. As the interstate corridors of I-55 and I-12 developed, Hammond’s footprint did too. People are choosing Hammond because of its close proximity between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Hammond is thirty miles from Baton Rouge, and fifty- five miles from New Orleans.

fter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Artigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics on October 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season,Artigues helped build a foundation of success for the Southeastern baseball program and now is doing the same for the entire athletic department. In his first year on the job, he presided over arguably the greatest athletic year in Southeastern history. The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference championships, the most the school has ever won in a single year. The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record. Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference. Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years. Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of theYear, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of theYear, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national,
regional and conference awards.Advancing to the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted a 39-21 record and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of theYear Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of theYear for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history,Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC,Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll.
