2016 Southeastern Softball
2016 Season Preview Under first-year head coach Rick Fremin, the Lady Lions return 13 letterwinners from a squad that finished fourth in the Southland Conference standings and advanced to the conference tournament. Highlighting the group are a quartet of All-Southland returners – senior Katie Lacour, senior Amber Sather, sophomore Kinsey Nichols and senior Taylor Bishop. Fremin also has high hopes for his newcomers. Freshmen Jaquelyn Ramon, Taylar Fuselier and Peyton Pigniolo are among a group that Fremin and his staff expects to make an immediate impact. “We used the fall to evaluate our talent and install our new system,” Fremin said. “We were pleased in the fall with the way our players bought in to our system and staff. As the preseason unfolds, we’re expecting our players to continue to battle to earn their spots. We finished the fall confident that we’re heading in the right direction.” Lacour, an All-Region performer as a junior, is the top returner from a lineup that hit .299 a season ago. The Lady Lion leadoff hitter from Port St. Joe, Florida set single-season school records with a .484 batting average (fifth in the NCAA and first in the Southland), 89 hits and 46 runs scored. Lacour, Nichols (.340, 4 HR, 27 RBI, 7 3B) and Sather (.286, 7 HR, 31 RBI, 43 BB) are all expected to build on strong performances in 2015. Fuselier, junior Lacey Fritz, sophomore Brittney Wingate and freshman Whitney Sullivan are all among those hoping to combine with Sather to give SLU a formidable heart of the lineup.” “Katie and Kinsey were both very consistent throughout the fall and should be very productive at the top of the order,” Fremin said. “Amber is one of the toughest outs in our lineup and we saw several players make strides during the fall that we think can compliment Amber well in the middle of our lineup.” Fremin’s teams as his previous coaching post, Jackson State, were routinely among the national leaders in stolen bases. Added aggressiveness on the base paths will be one of the most striking changes for the roster in Fremin’s debut season. Lacour, Nichols, Ramon, sophomore Peyton Stokes-Sutton, senior Amanda Livaudais and freshman Taylor Estain provide SLU with a speedy nucleus that Fremin will utilize. “We’ve got a good group of players that have excellent speed and we’re going to take advantage of that skill set,” Fremin commented. “We’re always going to be on go and that’s going to be our mindset. If we get thrown out, we’re going to get thrown out being aggressive. That’s our style of play and we’re going to embrace it.” In the circle, Bishop returns after an allconference junior season that saw the Sugar Land, Texas native finish 14-9 with a 3.11 earned run average. Fremin was also impressed with the efforts of senior Madison Vige’, junior Kasey Nielson, freshman Caitlyn VanHemelryck nd Pigniolo during his first fall with the program.
2 | 2016 SLU Softball
“We felt we made some great strides during the fall with our pitching staff,” Fremin said. “We’re not going to just rely on one person during the spring. We’re concentrating on establishing a full staff.” Southeastern will play its first 11 games of the season in the friendly confines of North Oak Park. The Lady Lions open the season by hosting the three-day, seven-team Lion Classic from Feb. 12-14. SLU’s non-conference home slate is highlighted by visits from Southeastern Conference members LSU (April 13) and Mississippi State (Feb. 22), while also including Alabama A&M (Feb. 19-20), Louisiana Tech (March 2), UT Arlington (March 5-6), Southeast Missouri (March 16) and Southern (April 26). The Lady Lions will hit the road for the first time on Feb. 26-28, competing in the Gulfport Invitational that will see SLU face Baylor, Southern Miss, Memphis, Jackson State and IPFW. Southeastern’s non-conference travels will also take it to Alcorn State (March 1), Southern Miss (March 8) and Mississippi State (March 22). Southeastern hosts Abilene Christian on March 11-12 at North Oak Park to open Southland Conference play. League foes Stephen F. Austin (March 25-26), Central Arkansas (April 22-23) and Nicholls (April 29-30) also visit Hammond. The Lady Lions will travel to Incarnate Word (March 18-19), Sam Houston State (April 1-2), Lamar (April 8-9), McNeese State (April 22-23) and Northwestern State (May 6-7). The top six teams in the Southland Conference standings will advance to the league tournament, scheduled for May 11-13 in Lake Charles. According to the preseason polls, the Lady Lions are expected to make its second straight trip to the Southland Conference Tournament. Southeastern was picked fifth by the league’s head coaches, while the conference’s sports information directors predicted SLU to finish fourth. Northwestern State is the overwhelming favorite in both polls. The defending Southland regular season champion was followed in the coaches poll by McNeese State, reigning league tournament champion Central Arkansas, Lamar, SLU, Abilene Christian, Nicholls, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word. The order stayed similar in the SID poll, with the exception of Lamar and Southeastern tying for fourth and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumping Nicholls for seventh.

Hall of Famers/Notable Performers Voncia Bookman - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2005
A standout outfielder from 1992-93, Bookman earned second-team all-south region honors both seasons for her play in the field and at the plate. She was two-time first-team All-Louisiana and All-Trans America Athletics Conference and was named co-Louisiana Newcomer of the Year in 1992. A prolific hitter, Bookman finished her career with school records for season and career batting average (.460/.453), season and career triples (8/14), career slugging percentage (.697), as well as single game stolen bases (4) and single season bases on balls (27). She ranks second in single season slugging percentage at .742. Bookman was the second softball player to be inducted joining Tara Maus who was a 2003 selection.
Tara Maus - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2003
Tara Maus was a four-year letter winner for the Lady Lions and one of the most decorated players in Southeastern softball history. In 1991, she became the first female athlete in school history to be named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team, an accomplishment she repeated in 1992. In her junior season, she was a first team All-Trans America Athletic Conference selection after batting .309 with eight doubles and a .396 slugging percentage. In her senior season, she earned Academic-All American notice from the National Softball Coaches Association (NSCA). Maus also garnered second team All-TAAC and Honorable Mention All-Louisiana honors after batting .300 with eight doubles and 25 RBI. Maus holds the school's career record for sacrifice flies and finished her career with the record for most consecutive games played at that time.
Rachel Ray - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2015
Ray Fitzgerald, a native of Payson, Arizona, played for the Lady Lion softball team from 2004-08 and established herself as the most accomplished pitcher in program history. A three-time All-Southland performer, she finished her career as the school’s all-time leader with 391 career strikeouts. Her junior season was her best at SLU, as she earned first team All-Southland Conference honors and set single-season school records with 21 wins and eight shutouts, including a 1-0 victory over No. 6 LSU. A two-time Southland AllAcademic selection, Ray Fitzgerald earned her degree in nursing.

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of studentathletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”

Athletic History S
outheastern Louisiana University’s storied athletic history dates back to 1930. Now, 15 intercollegiate sports strong, with nearly 330 student-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 17th year of Southland Conference membership poised for academic and competitive growth into the next century. Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and sponsors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s. For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 23 conference championships, including five regular-season crowns in women’s soccer, four regular-season titles in women’s tennis and four men’s golf championships. Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77. Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated football team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL. The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation. Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana. It claimed the Southland Conference Men’s All Sports trophy in 200809 and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings in three of the past five years. Southland Conference championships offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA post-season play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf.
40 | 2016 SLU Softball
Southeastern also made its mark in post-season NCAA Championship competition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in the 1998 championship tournament, along with qualifying seven golfers for the NCAA championship tournament and advancing to six NCAA regionals (2000, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). The Lions baseball team played in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s and came within a game of returning to the postseason in both 2012 and 2013, finally breaking through in 2014. The women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2009, 2013 and 2015; while the track and field team has qualified numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country. Southeastern student-athletes have been named AllAmericans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and have garnered numerous awards in the Southland and the state of Louisiana. Southeastern student-athletes have also earned Academic AllAmerican recognition; most recently in softball and baseball, while two individuals were named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2012. Under the leadership of Athletic Director Jay Artigues, Southeastern experienced unprecedented success in the 2013-14 school year. Southeastern claimed a school-record five conference titles during the academic year, with the baseball, football and soccer teams, as well as individual cross country, golf and track & field athletes, representing the institution in NCAA postseason action. Football and baseball carried the championship success into the 2014-15 academic year. Football repeated as Southland Conference champions. The baseball Lions finished 42-17 overall and 25-5 in the Southland Conference, setting the school record for overall wins and the Southland record for conference wins on their way to claiming the conference’s regular-season championship.

A
fter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Artigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics on October 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season, Artigues helped build a foundation of success for the Southeastern baseball program and now is doing the same for the entire athletic department. In his first year on the job, he presided over arguably the greatest athletic year in Southeastern history. The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference championships, the most the school has ever won in a single year. The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record. Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference. Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years. Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national, regional and conference awards. Advancing to the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted a 39-21 record and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura.
Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of the Year for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history, Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll. In his first season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to 42 wins and a berth in the JUCO World Series in Millington, Tenn. PRCC finished the year as the South Division Conference Champions, Region XXIII Champions and Central District Champions with Artigues earning Region XXIII and Central District Coach of the Year honors. Before returning to Pearl River in 2001, where he was a two-year letter winner and was a first team All-State and All-Region selection, Artigues spent three seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and posted a 107-57 record. In his final season at BPCC, Artigues led the Cavaliers to a school-record 46 wins and a No. 8 ranking in the final NJCAA poll.
Jay Artigues Athletic Director
Artigues began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at Spring Hill College where he worked with the team’s hitters and infielders. He served as Dean of Students and head baseball coach at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La., where he led the Saints to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 1996. Artigues moved to Hammond in 1996 and served as athletic director and head baseball coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, leading the Falcons to the 1997 state playoffs. He then moved on to the college ranks accepting a job at UNO where he was a volunteer assistant coach in 1998 under Tom Schwaner. As a player, Artigues spent two seasons at PRCC where he was an All-State and All-Region selection. He then went on to play two seasons at Belhaven College where he was an All-Conference selection as a second baseman. A native of Bay St. Louis, Miss., he holds the highest single-season on-base percentage (.538) and sixth-highest career batting average (.375) in Belhaven history. A 1992 graduate of Belhaven, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration, Artigues also holds a Master’s Degree in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy (1993). Artigues and his wife Rachel are the parents of two sons, Christopher “Champ” (15) and Casey (12).
