2015 Season Outlook With a solid returning nucleus and several impact newcomers entering the fold, Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois believes his team can greatly improve the roster’s 19-29 finish from 2014. “We’ve improved our athleticism and overall team speed from last season,” Langlois commented. “We’ve got to continue to get tougher, but we like the talent on this roster and we’re excited to get going.” Southeastern returns three All-Southland Conference players in junior outfielder Katie Lacour, senior third baseman Megan Moore and junior designated player Amber Sather. Langlois believes the returning trio will be surrounded with an improved batting order in 2015. “Megan and Amber will be counted on production in the middle of the lineup,” Langlois said. “We expect Sydney Booker and Lacey Fritz to help take pressure off those two by providing added pop to our lineup. We’re going to have more speed in the order and we expect Katie, Vanessa Eng, Kinsey Nichols and Shelby Stewart to be able to pressure our opponents.” In the circle, junior Taylor Bishop, senior Spencer Adkinson and senior Tori Stamper return to give the Lady Lions a veteran pitching staff. Two newcomers to go with the holdovers have Langlois excited about his group of arms. “We expect Taylor and Spencer to continue to improve and we’re confident in each of their abilities to give us good innings versus anybody,” Langlois said. “We’ve added Nicole Ayala and Madison Vige’ who both compliment Taylor and Spencer’s styles very well. “The one to watch is Tori,” Langlois added. “We’re very proud of the work she’s put in to improve during the offseason. She’s poised for a big season.” Around the infield, Moore returns at third base, where Booker will also see action. Booker was also impressive at short during the fall, while Eng and freshman Grace DeLee will compete for playing time at second base. Sather could see more action at first base when not serving as designated player, though senior Teresa Lemos could also see playing time at first. Fritz and sophomore JoAnna Booty are expected to share catching duties.

“We’re going to have some good competition around the infield,” Langlois said. “We really like what we saw from Booker in the fall. Grace is going to be a very good player for us in the future, but it’s hard to take a proven hitter like Vanessa out of the lineup. “We’d like to see Amber hold down that role at first base, but Teresa has shown to be a really good communicator and understands the game very well,” Langlois added. “Behind the plate, Lacey is the better offensive player right now, but JoAnna is ahead defensively. We may have to use those two in a platoon or Lacey may see more time at DP when Amber plays first.” Lacour returns in centerfield after a sophomore season that saw the Port St. Joe, Florida native hit .397 and become the first Lady Lion to earn first team All-Southland honors since 2008. Nichols has the inside track to start in left field, while Stewart and sophomore Mychal Truxillo are expected to both see plenty of action in right field. “Katie’s the catalyst for our offense,” Langlois said. “We expect her and Kinsey to be on base an awful lot at the top of that order. We’re going to be more aggressive on the base paths, but we still want those big boppers to be productive. We’re confident that Katie and Kinsey are going to give us RBI opportunities and our middle of the order is going to have to take advantage.”

Head Coach Pete Langlois 21st Year at Southeastern Southeastern Louisiana, 1992 After 20 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2013 squad returned to the Southland Conference Tournament after a five-year absence. Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led eight teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve. The upgrading of Southeastern’s home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick fence along the foul lines and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason leading up to the 2010 season, turf was laid in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New outdoor batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’s home field is considered to be one of the top facilities in the SLC and the immediate area. Over the past 14 seasons, Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy of individual accolades including 50 all-SLC selections (seven first team) and 47 all-Louisiana picks. In 2004, Summer Delaneuville was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith - the school’s career leader in home runs - was named first-team all-SLC and all-Louisiana. As a senior, Smith was once again named all-SLC. The three first-team SLC picks in 2002 were the first-ever in the Southland for Southeastern.

In 2010, Southeastern junior infielder Katie Duhe was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team as a second team selection. Duhe, a President’s Medal of Academic Excellence recipient, earned first team Academic All-Southland honors in 2011. In 2009, Heather Sherrill was named to the All-Southland team for the third time and became the school’s leader in hits, RBI, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases. Duhe was named to the Academic All-District VI squad, marking the third of four straight years that one of Langlois’ players made the squad.
2015 Southeastern Softball In 2008, Sherrill was a first team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who became the school’s career strikeout leader as a senior, made her third appearance on the All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhart was named to the Academic All-America team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team. The 2013 team returned to the league tournament for the first time since 2008, setting a new single-season school record with 32 victories. The Lady Lions eliminated league champion McNeese State from the tournament, earning its first postseason victory since 2002. Michelle Duhe, Kelsey Nichols, Katie Lacour, Megan Moore and Amber Sather all earned All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honors. In 2007, Ray was a first team All-SLC choice and Arica Rodriguez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The 2001 season provided perhaps the finest season ever for Southeastern softball as Langlois’ Lions broke or tied 14 school and individual single-season and single-game records and placed five on the Southland Conference post season teams en route to the first winning season since 1998. Most noticeably, the squad tied the then all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as the Lady Lions knocked off the second and third-seeded teams finishing with a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors. The 2002 season wasn’t quite as good as 2001, but the finish was almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fifth place league finish. The Lions didn’t win quite as many games or set as many records as the ‘01 squad, but the 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off top-seeded and tournament host Northwestern State in the semifinals to finish third in the event for the second straight year.
In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Conference and set the school’s then all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament while also setting numerous standards in the record books. And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor is no stranger. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions. Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeastern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under then-head coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions. Langlois picked up the duties as interim head coach, finishing the season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995. In his time at Southeastern, he has guided two All-South Region players, 21 conference all-Academic team members and four CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees. Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge. Langlois received a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (15) and Macie (11). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008 and the couple welcomed their first son, Jacques, in February 2011.

2015 Southeastern Softball On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year prior, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 20092010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules, stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues.

fter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Artigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics on October 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season,Artigues helped build a foundation of success for the Southeastern baseball program and now is doing the same for the entire athletic department. In his first year on the job, he presided over arguably the greatest athletic year in Southeastern history. The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference championships, the most the school has ever won in a single year. The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record. Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference. Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years. Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of theYear, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of theYear, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of theYear Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of theYear for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history,Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure.
