2017 Season outlook
2017
LADy LiON Softball
Under second-year head coach Rick Fremin, the Southeastern Louisiana softball team will be looking to build on an impressive fall, as an influx of talented newcomers from both the junior college and high school ranks buoys a solid returning nucleus that includes four returning starters. “We really like we are heading into the spring,” Fremin commented. “We had a good fall and started to come together as a ball club.” The top returner for the Lady Lions is junior outfielder Kinsey Nichols, who has twice earned All-Southland Conference honors. As a sophomore, the Alvin, Texas native hit .391 and was second in the Southland Conference with 35 stolen bases on the way to helping SLU lead the nation with a single-season school record 172 steals. “Kinsey has the potential to be one of the most electric players in the Southland Conference,” Fremin said. “She plays very aggressive and is fun to watch. If she continues to do what we ask of her within our system, the sky is the limit for her. She’s become a better leader and she’s someone whose personailty rubs off on the team. “We’re going to continue to be aggressive on the base paths,” Fremin added. “We have plenty of players who can steal bases and we expect to play the same style in 2017.” Nichols will again be the starter in left field, with juco products Maddie Edmonston (St. Amant, Louisiana/LSU Eunice) and Kalyn Watts (Jones County JC) expected to join her to give SLU an athletic outfield trio. “Maddie had a great fall and will step in and be our leadoff hitter for us,” Fremin commented. “We like what we saw from Kalyn in the fall in the middle of the lineup.” Senior third baseman Mychal Truxillo and sophomore shortstop Jaquelyn Ramon both return to hold down the left side of the infield. Truxillo led Southeastern with nine doubles in her first season as a full-time starter, while Ramon was an additional threat on the base paths with 32 steals on the season. “We think Mychal can really have a big senior season for us,” Fremin commented. “She’s gotten really comfortable in the middle of the lineup, improved at third base and has embraced her role within our system. Jaquelyn came back a better player this fall. She needs to continue on the path of growth.” A pair of junior college transfers - second baseman Alli Daigle (Rayne, Louisiana/LSU Eunice) and first baseman Mahalia Gibson (Hattiesburg, Mississippi/East Central Mississippi CC) – have the inside track at their respective positions. Perhaps the fiercest position battle of the preseason will be at catcher, as several different players will vie for playing time behind the plate. “We may start the season on a rotation behind the plate,” Fremin said. “We want to see who is going to earn the majority of these innings as our catcher.”
Southeastern will be looking to increase their power output in 2017. Watts, Gibson and freshman Mattie Ort (Walker, Louisiana/Walker HS) are among the players expected to boost the Lions extra-base production. Fremin boasts a deep pitching staff heading into 2017. Sophomore Caitlyn VanHemelryck and senior Kasey Nielson return and are joined by newcomers Rachel Hayes (Ocean Springs, Mississippi/Jones County JC), Lacey Hill (Kilbourne, Louisiana/East Central Mississippi CC), Alley McDonald (Whitehouse, Tennessee/Pope John Paul II HS), Ali McCoy (Prairieville, Louisiana/Dutchtown HS) and Tanner Wright (Lake Charles, Louisiana/Sam Houston HS). “We want to build a staff and we don’t want to just depend on one person,” Fremin commented. “We may need all seven to get us through some of these early season tournaments and even a conference weekend. Our pitchers understand what we’re looking for from them and have really embraced our philosophy.” The Lady Lions will open the season on Feb. 11 versus Army in their first game of Lion Classic I. Southeastern will host two Lion Classics (Feb. 10-12; Feb. 17-19) to open the season and will play tournaments at Troy (Feb. 24-26) and Tennessee (March 2-4) during the non-conference campaign. During non-conference play, Southeastern will also host Mississippi State (Feb. 28), Southern Miss (March 7), Louisiana-Monroe (April 17) and Jackson State (April 18). Non-tournament road trips for the Lady Lions during nonconference play include trips to Louisiana Tech (Feb. 22), Ole Miss (March 15), Alcorn State (March 21), Louisiana-Lafayette (April 11) and Southern (April 25). “We’re playing some tough competition during non-conference play,” Fremin commented. “But I think that’s good for this team to get them ready for conference play and hopefully the postseason.” Southeastern opens Southland Conference play with a three-game series at Abilene Christian on March 10-11. The Lady Lions will also travel to Nicholls (March 24-25), Houston Baptist (April 7-8) and Central Arkansas (April 21-22) for Southland series. League foes visiting North Oak Park include Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (March 17-18), Lamar (March 31April 1), Northwestern State (April 14-15), Sam Houston State (April 28-29) and McNeese (May 5-6). The top six teams in the Southland Conference standings will advanced to the league tournament, scheduled for May 10-12 in Conway, Arkansas. “Our goal is to end the season in the postseason,” Fremin said. “Last season, we had a lot of success early, but we got ahead of ourselves. We have to learn to compete within our conference. Our returners now have a season within our system and we’ve added some very talented players. This is a group I expect to continue to get better as the season progresses. We want to be playing our best ball by the end of the year.”

LADy LiON Softball A standout outfielder from 1992-93, Bookman earned second-team all-south region honors both seasons for her play in the field and at the plate. She was two-time first-team All-Louisiana and All-Trans America Athletics Conference and was named co-Louisiana Newcomer of the Year in 1992. A prolific hitter, Bookman finished her career with school records for season and career batting average (.460/.453), season and career triples (8/14), career slugging percentage (.697), as well as single game stolen bases (4) and single season bases on balls (27). She ranks second in single season slugging percentage at .742. Bookman was the second softball player to be inducted joining Tara Maus who was a 2003 selection.
Tara Maus - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2003
Tara Maus was a four-year letter winner for the Lady Lions and one of the most decorated players in Southeastern softball history. In 1991, she became the first female athlete in school history to be named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team, an accomplishment she repeated in 1992. In her junior season, she was a first team All-Trans America Athletic Conference selection after batting .309 with eight doubles and a .396 slugging percentage. In her senior season, she earned Academic-All American notice from the National Softball Coaches Association (NSCA). Maus also garnered second team All-TAAC and Honorable Mention All-Louisiana honors after batting .300 with eight doubles and 25 RBI. Maus holds the school's career record for sacrifice flies and finished her career with the record for most consecutive games played at that time.
Rachel Ray - Southeastern Hall of Fame 2015
Ray Fitzgerald, a native of Payson, Arizona, played for the Lady Lion softball team from 2004-08 and established herself as the most accomplished pitcher in program history. A three-time All-Southland performer, she finished her career as the school’s all-time leader with 391 career strikeouts. Her junior season was her best at SLU, as she earned first team All-Southland Conference honors and set single-season school records with 21 wins and eight shutouts, including a 1-0 victory over No. 6 LSU. A two-time Southland AllAcademic selection, Ray Fitzgerald earned her degree in nursing.

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university.
4 0 4 9 1 3 7,1 5,1 8 9 12 7 3 4 3,8 5 8 7,6 13 1,3 0,0 2 10 9,4 0 9,2 5 4,10 6 9 1,6 3 1,5 1 3 9,10 2 6,7 5,6 2
As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of studentathletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”

Athletic History S
outheastern Louisiana University’s storied athletic history dates back to 1930. Now, 15 intercollegiate sports strong, with nearly 330 student-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 17th year of Southland Conference membership poised for academic and competitive growth into the next century. Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and sponsors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s. For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 23 conference championships, including five regular-season crowns in women’s soccer, four regular-season titles in women’s tennis and four men’s golf championships. Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77. Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated football team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL. The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation. Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana. It claimed the Southland Conference Men’s All Sports trophy in 2008-09 and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings in three of the past five years. Southland Conference championships offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA post-season
play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf. Southeastern also made its mark in post-season NCAA Championship competition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in the 1998 championship tournament, along with qualifying seven golfers for the NCAA championship tournament and advancing to six NCAA regionals (2000, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). The Lions baseball team played in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s and came within a game of returning to the postseason in both 2012 and 2013, finally breaking through in 2014. The women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2009 and 2013; while the track and field team has qualified numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country. Southeastern student-athletes have been named All-Americans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and have garnered numerous awards in the Southland and the state of Louisiana. Southeastern student-athletes have also earned Academic All-American recognition; most recently in softball and baseball, while two individuals were named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2012. Under the leadership of Athletic Director Jay Artigues, Southeastern experienced unprecedented success in the 2013-14 school year. Southeastern claimed a school-record five conference titles during the academic year, with the baseball, football and soccer teams, as well as individual cross country, golf and track & field athletes, representing the institution in NCAA postseason action. Football and baseball carried the championship success into the 2014-15 academic year. Football repeated as Southland Conference champions. The baseball Lions finished 42-17 overall and 25-5 in the Southland Conference, setting the school record for overall wins and the Southland record for conference wins on their way to claiming the conference’s regular-season championship.
Soccer picked up another championship ring in the fall of 2015, winning the Southland Conference Tournament and advancing to the NCAA playoffs. In the spring of 2016 several athletes turned in stellar performances. Track & Field’s Alex Young won a national championship in the weight throw. Katie Lacour rewrote the softball record book on her way to leading the nation in stolen bases and claiming the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Golden Shoe Award. Jameson Fisher helped the Lion baseball team to its first NCAA at-large bid, and led the nation in both batting average and on-base percentage through the end of the regular season.

The Southland Conference
2017
The Southland Conference W
ell into its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions and approximately 4,200 student-athletes. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into the 21st Century. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed four additional members in 2013: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the Southland also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. An original Southland member from 1963-73, Abilene Christian rejoined the league as one of the most decorated athletic programs in NCAA history, and the addition of Houston Baptist, UIW and New Orleans gives the Southland a regular competitive presence in the key metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans. Southland cities encompass approximately 14 million people, and six of its television markets rank among the top 100 in the U.S.
All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). The Southland Bowling League, an affiliated Conference sport, originated in 2015, and four of its members filled out half of the eight-team bracket, with Stephen F. Austin advancing to the national title match. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewership through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In 2014, three Southland teams – Southeastern Louisiana, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin– all qualified for the NCAA Division I Football Championship, and in 2011 and 2012, Sam Houston advanced to the national championship game. Also, in 2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advanced to the 2002 national championship contest. The conference has been represented in eight national championship games since the league joined the FCS (formerly I-AA) in 1982. All told, Southland teams have played in 115 Division I playoff games in 33 years, winning 56 of the contests. Historically, the Southland’s successful football heritage has sustained itself through numerous membership and classification changes. The Southland joined the NCAA College Division in 1964, and was designated as NCAA Division II in 1973 before joining Division I in 1975. The Southland was an NCAA Division I-A league from 1978-81, before joining the ranks of FCS in 1982, its home ever since. During its tenure as a Division I and I-A conference, the Southland Conference initiated the startup of the Shreveport, La.-based Independence Bowl in 1976. The Southland representative served as the host team of the bowl until 1980, compiling a 2-3 record in those contests. The Conference can lay claim to five national championships, including College Division championships through former members Arkansas State (1970, UPI) and Louisiana Tech (1972, National Football Foundation). Louisiana Tech also won the first NCAAsanctioned national title, winning the Division II playoffs in 1973. Tech followed that with the UPI’s Division II national championship in 1974. Louisiana-Monroe won the 1987 Division I-AA national championship. McNeese State, which has made 15 appearances in the NCAA Division I playoffs, played in the 1997 NCAA Championship game, while Sam Houston State has earned eight trips to the football playoffs, most recently advancing to the 2014 national semifinals. Stephen F. Austin played in the 1989 NCAA title contest and has seven total playoff appearances, including 2009, 2010 and 2014. Northwestern State has advanced to the NCAA playoffs six times, Nicholls State has participated three times in postseason, Southeastern Louisiana played in the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Championships, and Central Arkansas made consecutive playoff appearances in 2011 and 2012. On six occasions, the Southland has placed three teams in the NCAA playoffs. The Southland has produced 177 first-team football All-Americans during its history and in 2010, Stephen F. Austin quarterback Jeremy Moses became the first player in Southland history to receive the Walter Payton Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding football player at the FCS level. The Southland is one of five FCS conferences with at least 200 selections (208) in the National Football League draft. There have been 28 Southland players taken in the draft since 2000, including Southeastern Louisiana defensive back Robert Alford, who was picked as the first FCS player in the second round of the 2013 draft. There are more than 15 former Southland players on NFL rosters heading into the 2015 season. Southland Conference alums in the NFL include Cleveland’s Josh McCown (Sam Houston State), who has been in the league for the last 12 seasons, and Baltimore’s Lardarius Webb, who is currently the second-longest tenured player with six seasons of experience. Other recent NFL additions from
the Southland include New England’s Kevin Hughes (Southeastern Louisiana) and Dax Swanson (Sam Houston State), Seattle’s Jeremy Lane (Northwestern State), Chicago’s Malcolm Bronson (McNeese State), Atlanta’s Robert Alford (Southeastern Louisiana) and Washington’s Chase Dixon (Central Arkansas). The Southland has seen former Nicholls State players win Super Bowl rings in recent seasons, as former Colonel Antonio Robinson was a member of the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl XLV champions. And, Nicholls-ex Webb was a member of the Super Bowl XLVII champion Baltimore Ravens. Among the former NFL stars from the Southland include Fred Dean, who was inducted to the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 2008 to become the first former Southland Conference player to earn induction in Canton. Other great NFL players from the Southland include Super Bowl XXIX quarterback Stan Humphries, Bill Bergey, Mike Barber, Fred Barnett, Bubby Brister, Ray Brown, Roger Carr, Larry Centers, Bruce Collie, Jackie Harris, Buford Jordan, Tim McKyer, Kavika Pittman, Billy Ryckman, Rickey Sanders, Eugene Seale, Rafael Septien, Terrance Shaw, Leonard Smith, Marcus Spears, Pat Tilley and Marvin Upshaw. Both Dean and Smith are recent inductees to the College Football Hall of Fame. The Southland Conference has also seen its share of great coaches during its history in Maxie Lambright, Ernie Duplechin, Sam Goodwin, Jack Doland, Bennie Ellender, Bobby Keasler, Larry Lacewell, Bill Davidson, Dennis Franchione, Pat Collins, and Ron Randleman. The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors male and female scholar-athletes with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female studentathlete with the highest grade-point average. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A total of 1,294 student-athletes appeared on the honor roll following the 2016 spring semester, and total of 1,039 studentathletes earned a spot on the honor roll at the end of the 2015 fall semester. While successful on the fields and courts, the Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. The conference continues to make great strides in the classroom. During the last decade, no other Division I conference has improved its Academic Progress Rate as well as the Southland Conference has. In fact, in 2009-10, the Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Division I leagues in men’s basketball APR. The academic progress the league has shown ultimately leads to higher graduation rates for our student-athletes. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.
