2012 Outlook

2012 Outlook

Frugoli Looks To Meld Returners, Newcomers Into Physcial Squad Building upon the foundation laid last season, second-year head coach Geno Frugoli preaches the same mantra he has since his first day on the job. “Our goal is to get better every day,” Frugoli said. “That’s been the goal since day one and it doesn’t change. It’s going into the gym, learning the systems and being comfortable with each other. We have seven new girls in our gym, which is a large number, and they have to buy in and get on the same page.” Frugoli and assistant coach Priscilla Morgan hit the recruiting trail after the 2011 season to beef up the team’s height and physical presence, something he said will help the team improve overall. “I put blocking more at a premium than a lot of coaches,” Frugoli said. “Last year I was disappointed we didn’t get more blocks. We saw it in a couple of matches, but I wanted to get bigger. That’s going to help our defense. It’s exciting to see we’re going to be as physical as other teams in the conference and that’s going to help us.” The coaching staff’s hard work paid off in the addition of three freshmen six feet or taller and a former All-Southland Conference setter in senior Becky Bekelja. The talented newcomers join an experienced group of returners. Eight of the 10 returning players have seen significant starting time in their careers. Up front Southeastern must replace its

top two blockers from a season ago, All-Southland performer Paige Dollison (90 total blocks) and Kinsey Williams (51 total blocks). Dollison also finished second on the team in attack percentage (.222). Courtney Donald, the Lady Lions’ leading offensive player, returns along with Zoe Douglas, Tamra Grayson, Stephanie Mueller, Elizabeth Ramee and Jessica Rauch. They will be joined by freshmen Shelby Devlin and Veronica Turk, each standing 6-foot-2. Most, if not all, can play elsewhere on the court, giving Frugoli a little bit of flexibility he didn’t have last season. “You always look at the talent you have and say this person could be better here, so let’s move them,” Frugoli said. “Courtney could play outside or middle, though it looks like she could be back in the middle. Some of the new girls were middles in high school, but they could be moved to the right side or outside. I still do a lot of that. We’re still such a young team that saying you’ll keep someone where they’ve been playing is not where we are as a program.” Another six-foot freshman is setter Mikayla Shippy. She joins returning starter Lindsey Young and McNeese State-transfer Becky Bekela.Young, a junior, sits seventh on Southeastern’s career assists list and Bekelja is a former all-conference performer. The two veteran setters provide Frugoli the freedom to

mix and match his lineup. Along the back row, returners Taylor Buckner, Cherish Krohn and Megan McMillin form a solid corps. Both Buckner and Krohn join McMillin, who finished 10th in the Southland Conference in digs per set (3.53) last season, in vying for playing time with freshmen Brooke Balser, Katie Garrity and Morgan Todd. “We have three setters and six girls fighting for two positions on the back row,” Frugoli said. “They all have strengths and weaknesses. We’re trying to watch a lot of film of situations and drills to see which girls stand out.” Three tournaments with opponents spanning the continental United States, hosting the Lion Classic, a 15-game home slate that includes intra-state rivals Grambling State, Louisiana Tech and Southern, plus a challenging 18-match Southland Conference slate highlight the 2012 Southeastern volleyball schedule. Facing schools from as far away as Connecticut, Montana, South Dakota and Utah in the first two weeks of the season, the Lady Lions will have a chance to see how they compare to teams from across the country. For the first time since 2005, Southeastern will host its own tournament, Sept. 6-8. The Lion Classic will feature the Lady Lions, Louisiana Tech, Southern, Texas-Pan American and Weber State in a round-robin format spanning three days. The Classic is part of Green and Gold Week, a week-long celebration lead-

2012 Outlook / Opponents ing up to the first home football game of the 2012 season. Following the Southeastern Lion Classic, the Lady Lions open Southland Conference play at home against McNeese State (Sept. 13) and Lamar (Sept. 15) before making its first trip, Sept. 20, to face new conference foe Oral Roberts. After a match at Central Arkansas (Sept. 22), the Lady Lions return home for a pair of matches against Sam Houston State (Sept. 27) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sept. 29). “Oral Roberts is going to bring a different type of volleyball to the conference,” Frugoli said. “I think they’re going to come in and be successful. I know they’re going to be a challenge, but after that I think there are a lot of teams about the same caliber. We’re trying to catch up to that. If a few teams get just a little bit better, you’re going to see a dogfight every match.” Southeastern embarks on a five-match road trip by stepping out of conference play to face Jackson State (Oct. 3). Nicholls State (Nov. 10) conclude the home portion of the schedule. This season, eight of the 10 teams will qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 15-17 in Conway Ark. “I’ve made it very clear to the girls that making the Southland Conference Tournament is a goal,” Frugoli said. “I don’t think there are any excuses for us not to make the tournament. We can do that this year.”

Head Coach Geno Frugoli

Geno Frugoli Head Coach

Second Season at Southeastern Louisiana • UNLV, 1992

G

eno Frugoli begins his second season as head volleyball coach at Southeastern Louisiana University. In his first season with the Lady Lions, Frugoli guided the team to a 5-28 overall record and a 1-15 mark in Southland Conference play. After the season, senior Paige Dollison was named to the Southland’s All-Conference and All-Academic teams, and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-Louisiana team. In the classroom, the Lady Lions earned their secondconsecutive AVCA Team Academic Award for maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average. Southeastern was one of two in-state schools and one of three in the Southland to earn the distinction. Prior to Southeastern, Frugoli spent four seasons as head coach at UMKC, gradually building the program into a competitor in the Summitt League. UMKC made a big jump in competitiveness in Frugoli’s third season on the sidelines, as he steered the ‘Roos to a 15-16 overall record and a 10-8 mark in league play. The 15 wins marked the third most wins in school history, while the 10 league wins tied the 1999 squad for the most all-time. UMKC made a late season surge to qualify for the Summit League Tournament for the first time since 2003. During the season, Frugoli guided UMKC to a series sweep over Oral Roberts. The ‘Roos snapped a 34-match losing streak to the Golden Eagles with their 3-1 win on Oct. 9 before completing the first ever season sweep of ORU with a 3-1 triumph in early November. The program also opened some eyes early in the season, when it took a game off of No. 23 Kansas State in Manhattan on Sept. 1. At the conclusion of the year, a pair of his studentathletes - Jamie Hagerman and Christiana McQuin - garnered Second Team all-Summit League honors. The duo

were UMKC’s first all-league honorees since the 2005 season and the first teammates to earn post season recognition since 2003. During Frugoli’s second season in Kansas City, he led the ‘Roos to a 12-20 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the Summit League. The 12 wins more than doubled his 2007 win total, and they were the most victories for the program since the 2002 season. McQuin became Frugoli’s first recruit to earn Summit League all-Freshman team honors after leading the squad with a .263 hitting percentage to go along with 233 kills. In his first season with the Kangaroos, Frugoli guided the team to a 5-27 overall record and a 2-14 mark in Summit League play. The squad started out the season with a 33 overall record, and it pushed ORU to a five-game match in October before ultimately falling by the 3-2 score. It was the first time that UMKC forced a decisive fifth game with ORU since the 1993 season. In the classroom, two of Frugoli’s first three squads earned the AVCA Academic Team Award for having at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA. In his three years with the ‘Roos a total of 32 student-athletes have been named to The Summit League Academic all-League team and 14 were selected to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. Additionally in 2009, Frugoli’s squad was one of just 49 teams in the nation to be recognized as a part of the NCAA’s academic reform program. Prior to moving to UMKC, Frugoli was the primary recruiter at Baylor University for three seasons. During his stint in Waco, he helped bring in seven players that were ranked among the top-150 and the No.1 player from the state of Texas. The Bears’ 2006 class received national acclaim, as it was tabbed the No. 16 ranked class in the country.

During his time on the sidelines, Frugoli helped the Bears increase their RPI from 196 to a season-high 32 in 2006. Additionally, he helped the squad to several victories over top-25 programs. The team also thrived in the classroom, as it received several academic all-District awards with a team grade point average of 3.3. Prior to joining the BU staff, Frugoli started the first men’s volleyball program in the state of Nebraska at Peru State College, and his team was ranked No. 7 in the nation when he departed. He was also in charge of the women’s program that was the conference runner-up with a 12-6 record in 2003 and advanced to the first MCAC conference final appearance in school history. During his year on the sidelines, Frugoli coached one honorable mention allAmerica selection, four all-conference selections and three Academic all-Americans. From 2000-03, Frugoli served as the head coach at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., where he led his team to a top-10 NAIA regional ranking. He coached six all-conference, one all-Region and five Academic allAmericans in his three seasons. Frugoli also coached at the high school and club levels in Las Vegas from 1993-2000, including serving as director of operations of All Sport Las Vegas Volleyball Club, Nevada’s largest club program, during that entire span. He compiled a 82-28 overall record during his time at Las Vegas High School. Additionally, his men’s team won the 1999 conference championship, and he was voted as the conference’s coach of the year. Frugoli received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UNLV in 1992 and a bachelor’s degree in education in 1996. He also earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Sioux Falls in 2002.

Athletic History S

outheastern Louisiana University’s storied athletic history dates back to 1930. Now, 15 intercollegiate sports strong, with nearly 330 student-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 15th year of Southland Conference membership poised for academic and competitive growth into the next century. Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and sponsors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s. For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 22 conference championships, including the 2010 Men’s Golf title, the 2009 Women’s Soccer Championship and the 2009 Men’s Track and Field Championships. Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77. Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated football team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s 60-year gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL. The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation. Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana. It claimed the

Southland Conference Men’s All Sports trophy in 2008-09 and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings in three of the past four years. Southland Conference championships offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA post-season play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf. Southeastern also made its mark in post-season NCAA Championship competition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in the 1998 championship tournament, along with qualifying seven golfers for the NCAA championship tournament and advancing to the NCAA regionals in 2000, 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The Lions baseball team played in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s and came with a game in 2012 of returning to the postseason. The women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2009; while the track and field team has qualified numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country. Southeastern student-athletes have been named All-Americans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and have garnered numerous award in the Southland and the state of Louisiana. Southeastern student-athletes have also earned Academic All-American recognition; most recently in softball and baseball, while two individuals were named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2012.

art Bellairs is in his third year at Southeastern Louisiana University after being named the school’s 15th Director of Athletics in November of 2009. Before arriving at Southeastern, Bellairs served in the same capacity at Savannah State University. A former senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs oversees 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 23 regular-season or tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, three in men’s golf and two in men’s basketball. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. During Bellairs’ tenure at Southeastern, the University’s athletic facilities have seen significant improvements, including renovations to locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The Southeastern baseball team saw the addition of a covered hitting facility and a new bullpen area while the Ray A. Naquin Strength and Conditioning Center installed new flooring and workout equipment. The Southeastern track and field team saw improvements with locker rooms, along with a state-of-the-art facility. In volleyball, the Lady Lions’ will move into an expanded locker room while the women’s tennis team moved into its new locker rooms and refurbished courts. Probably the biggest improvement during Bellairs’ tenure has been the replacement of the playing sur-

face at Strawberry Stadium. The new surface - which was installed in June 2012 - was the same surface used in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during the 2010 season. With improvements to help Southeastern on the field, there has also been steady improvement in the classroom and APR scores. Eleven of the 15 sports met or exceeded the standard of 925 set forth by the NCAA. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins. Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams. As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of the Year and the “Sports Illustrated” Unknown Coach of the Year. Bellairs, a native of Richmond, Ky., also served as assistant basketball coach at James Madison University
