2016 Outlook

Lady Lions Coming Off Best Season In a Decade Coming off its best season in more than a decade, the Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team opened fall practice with its sights set on continued success under fourth-year head coach Jim Smoot. Last season, Southeastern (13-18, 7-9 Southland) picked up its most wins since the 2004 season and advanced to the conference tournament for a second consecutive year. “A lot of the new faces are going to help determine our success,” Smoot said. “There’s a lot of energy with this new group which will combine great with our returning players. It’s going to be a really fun season and it looks like everyone is ready to work hard. We’ve made that a point of emphasis and it should lead to success.” Paced by preseason All-Southland Conference selection Landry Bullock, a group of four seniors will help lead a squad dominated by underclassmen. A first team selection, Bullock averaged a team-high 3.12 kills per set (346 total) last season, ranking ninth in the Southland. The senior from Spring, Texas, recorded an attack percentage of .400 or better against North Carolina Central (.400), Abilene Christian (.483) and in the conference tournament against top-seeded Texas A&M-

Corpus Christi (.485). Seniors Parrie Hartley and Madi Odom, along with Bullock, are the Lady Lions top returning offensive threats, while Rachael Bunn is the top returning blocker on the squad. Sophomores Monica Ramon and Macey Stock are the top returning defensive specialists while Haley Baker split setting duties last season as a freshman. Redshirt freshmen Sky Ramsey and Elyssa

They were talkative. There was lots of communication and excitement in the gym.”

Jim Smoot Head Coach

Fourth Season at Southeastern Louisiana • Pepperdine University, 1979

D

uring Jim Smoot’s tenure at Southeastern Louisiana the Lady Lion volleyball program has established much needed consistency, winning double-digit matches all three seasons and qualifying for the Southland Conference Tournament each of the last two. In 2015, Southeastern recorded its most overall wins (13-18) since the 2004 season and that comes on the heels of an 8-8 Southland mark in 2014, the program’s most conference victories in a dozen seasons. Juniors Landry Bullock and Madi Odom earned All-Louisiana honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for their efforts in leading the Lady Lions to new heights in 2015. One of the highlights of the year included the Lady Lions’ first victory over conference-foe Central Arkansas. Southeastern also made its academic efforts known throughout the conference as Bullock joined senior Mikayla Shippy on the Southland All-Academic squad. For Shippy, it was her second consecutive appearance on the conference’s academic team. Morgan Todd made her mark on the Southeastern record book in 2014, earning All-Southland (second team) honors. A balanced offensive attack, aided by four different players with at least two kills per set, and a stingy defense paced Southeastern to a pair of four match win streaks in 2013, including a sweep of the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic. A former head coach at Ohio State, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount and South Alabama, Smoot has made two trips to the Men’s NCAA Division I Final

Four and one trip to the Women’s NAIA Final Four. After 14 seasons as the women’s head coach at Westmont College, an NAIA school in Santa Barbara, Calif., Smoot spent the 2012 season as a volunteer assistant for legendary coach John Blair at Tennessee Tech. At Westmont, Smoot took his team to the NAIA national tournament four times. Included in those four appearances is a 1999 trip to the Final Four. Smoot’s coaching experience prior to Westmont includes three years as the women’s head coach at South Alabama (1994-96) where he earned the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1995. He has also served as an assistant with the women’s programs at LSU and Michigan. On the men’s side, Smoot served as head coach at Loyola Marymount (1980-81), Ohio State and El Camino Junior College (1982-84), as well as a stint as co-head coach at Hawaii (1985). In 1982 and 1983 his Ohio State teams advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The native of Torrance, Calif., has also coached in the Women’s Professional Volleyball League and a men’s club team in Saudi Arabia. He was head coach for the men’s East Team in the 1982 National Sports Festival and an assistant for the men’s squad at the 1983 World University Games. Smoot began his collegiate playing career at El Camino Junior College, then played two years at Pepperdine where he was named the Most Valuable Player in 1973 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Physcial Education. He resides in Hammond, Louisiana.

squad. For Shippy, it was her second consecutive appearance on the conference’s academic team. Morgan Todd made her mark on the Southeastern record book in 2014, earning All-Southland (second team) honors. Barker joinied the staff in October of 2013 from Seward County (Kan.) Community College. In her one-plus seasons with SCCC, Barker helped Seward to a 20-win season and was on the bench for a Lady Saints team that was ranked in the NJCAA Top-20 for the 18th straight season. Seward finished the 2012 season in second place in the Jayhawk West with an 11-3 record, just the second time since the turn of the century that the Lady Saints posted double digit wins in conference action. Barker, who primarily worked with the Seward hitters, saw three of her players named Jayhawk West All-Conference, including Thayna Silva who was a first team selection. Barker came to Seward County from Sweeny, Texas, where she coached a number of different

In 2010, Barker started her coaching career at Christian Life Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She served as the Crusaders JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach. Barker graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on Kinesiology-Sports Management. On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally selfreported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 20092010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification

* 16 wins from the 2005-2007 seasons were later vacated due to NCAA sanctions. The Lady Lions actual on-court record was 6-20 (2005), 4-27 (2006) and 10-18 (2007).

process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
