Southeastern Louisiana University Women’s Basketball

Head Coach Lori Davis Jones 12th Year at Southeastern - School Record: 137-178 Overall Career Record: 315-275 Southeastern Louisiana, 1992 Lori Davis Jones is entering her 12th season at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball program. During her tenure, the Lady Lions have seen their program continue to improve and grow. Under the guidance of Jones and her staff, the Lady Lions have won two Southland Conference East Division championships (2006-07, 2008-09). Under Jones, Southeastern has had 17 All-Southland Conference and 10 All-Louisiana selections. Seven different Lady Lions have earned Academic All-Southland Conference accolades during Jones’ time at the helm of the program. Jones’ squads have also been very active in the local community, participating in projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life. Under Jones, the PRIDE (Positive Role Models in the Development of Excellence) group has been developed, as successful women from the local and campus community serve as mentors for the Lady Lion student-athletes. Jones took over the reins of the Southeastern women’s basketball program prior to the 2002-03 season. In her first year at the helm, she compiled a 7-20 record in her first steps to bringing Southeastern’s program back to prominence. In 2003-04, Southeastern took further steps towards Southland Conference contention, nearly doubling its win total from the previous season. The 2003-04 Lady Lions finished with a 12-15 mark and fell just short of reaching the SLC Tournament for the first time since 2001-02. Under Jones and her staff’s tutelage, junior forward Nakeya Downing was named Newcomer of the Year in both the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. In 2004-05, the Lady Lions finished with a 10-17 record and again narrowly missed a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. Downing finished her senior season third in the nation in rebounding and was a first-team All-SLC and All-Louisiana selection by the SLC. 2005-06 saw Jones lead the Lady Lions to their first Southland Conference Tournament berth since 2001-02. The Lady Lions rolled off a sixgame win streak during the season and picked up road wins at Louisiana-Monroe and Northwestern State for the first time in three decades. The 2006-07 season saw Jones lead the Lady Lions to new heights, as the team finished with a 17-13 record and won the SLC East Division title. It marked the first winning season for Southeastern since the 1994-95 season and its first conference title in school history. Southeastern placed three players on the All-SLC team – Brenita Williams, Jazmin Cain and Tina Wilson – for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The Lady Lions were also outstanding in the classroom, as Williams, Cain and Brooke Necaise gave the Lady Lions a leaguehigh three players on the SLC All-Academic team.

In 2007-08, Southeastern placed Kristy Carlin and Necaise on the All-SLC team. Necaise became the school’s career leader for three-point field goals made and free-throw percentage, while also setting the school record for three-point field goals in a single season. Necaise also became the school’s first three-time SLC All-Academic selection. In 2008-09, Southeastern enjoyed its best season of Jones’ tenure, winning their second SLC East Division title in three years and finishing with a 19-11 overall record – the program’s best mark since the 1994-95 season. The Lady Lions’ 11-5 mark in league play was also the program’s best since joining the Southland prior to the 1997-98 campaign. The 2008-09 Lady Lions featured All-Southland performers Carlin and Charinee Mitchell, both who were also named to the Academic All-Southland teams. Southeastern also connected on a school and SLC record 220 three-pointers in 2008-09. Jones reached a milestone in a 2009-10 season that saw the Lady Lions advance to the SLC Tournament for the fourth time in five years. In a 7750 win over Central Arkansas, she became the third head coach in the program’s history to reach 100 career wins. Senior Zevy Ivory represented Southeastern on the All-Southland Conference team. The 2010-11 team advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six years. Senior Rashima Jenkins represented Southeastern on the All-Southland Conference team as a third team selection. The 2011-12 season saw Southeastern make its fourth consecutive trip to the Southland Conference Tournament, behind All-Southland performers Kelli Jenkins and Aja Gibson. Jones won her 300th game as a head coach during the year, while Jenkins became the 16th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. In 2012-13, Jones again had a pair of players on the All-Southland Conference team, as Gibson and Brandi Simmons represented the Lady Lions. Sophomore guard Symone Miller was also named to the Academic All-Southland Conference team. After a successful eight-year stint at Lambuth, where she led the Lady Eagles to unprecedented success, Jones returned to her alma mater with simple goals in moving Southeastern into the upper echelons of the Southland Conference. Jones, who completed her playing career at Southeastern in 1991, had unparalleled success upon taking over the Lambuth program in 1994-95. In eight years as head coach, Jones enjoyed seven straight 20-win seasons, four consecutive berths in the NAIA National Tournament and advanced

2013-14 Season Preview Featuring a solid returning nucleus and an array of talented newcomers, the Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball team heads into the 2013-14 season with expectations to take a step forward in its quest to compete for a Southland Conference championship. Southeastern returns three starters and six letter winners from last season. Lady Lion head coach Lori Davis Jones believes the team has made the necessary additions and improvements to return to the Southland Conference Tournament after missing the postseason for the first time in five seasons in 2012-13. “We knew that we had to address issues on both sides of the ball,” Jones said. “We feel that with the additions we’ve made, as well as the maturation of our returners we are going to be able to score the ball more easily. We have added players with a scoring mentality. We plan on playing more up tempo to give our scorers more opportunity. “Our defensive integrity also had to improve and we feel like we’ve addressed that,” Jones added. “The main problem we had defensively last season was lack of depth. We feel we are much deeper, more experience team heading into the 2013-14 season.” Southeastern’s top returner is senior forward Aja Gibson, a preseason first team All-Southland Conference choice and the team’s top scorer in each of the past two seasons. Gibson, who averaged 10.9 points a season ago and was named to the All-Southland Conference third team, will once again be the team’s go-to player and team with sophomore Nanna Pool, as well as newcomers Adrina LaVern and Chey Stewart to give the Lady Lions a deep post corps. “Aja has been a steady performer for us throughout her career and we feel us moving to a more up-tempo style will allow her to be more productive,” Jones said. “We expect Nanna to step in as our other starting post. We need her to be more versatile offensively while also concentrating on becoming a better defender. Adrina will be a steady solid performer from day one. The wild card in the paint is Chey. She gives us more toughness in the paint and will likely play significant minutes as a true freshman.”

The starting backcourt of juniors Elizabeth Styles and Symone Miller also return for the Lady Lions. Styles was third on the team with 9.3 points per game and was third in the Southland with 4.8 assists last season, while Miller chipped in 8.1 points per contest. Sophomore Erica Hernandez, as well as newcomers Annessa De La Cruz, Brandi Riddle, Peaches Anderson and Dani Fielder should provide a versatile back court. “Liz and Symone are upperclassmen now, so we expect them to take the next step,” Jones commented. “Liz made a lot of strides last season and we want her to continue to play at a fast pace, but still make sound decisions. Symone has to come in with more of a scoring mentality. She has to be more aggressive offensively for us to succeed. “Peaches transferred in mid year last season from Michigan and will join us after the fall semester,” Jones added. “She will have an immediate impact as a steady player with a high basketball IQ. Annessa has Division I experience after playing at American University as a freshman and both she and Brandi were both big-time scorers in good junior college leagues. Erica’s a great shooter who will help us space the floor. We are looking forward to seeing Dani develop this season. She’s a tremendous athlete.”

Jones believes the Southland Conference race is as wide open as it has been in recent years. “This is going to be an intriguing year in the Southland,” Jones said. “So many of the top players from last season were seniors, so we are interested to see how we match up against the competition. We feel like we’ve made great strides from a talent and depth standpoint. We’re excited about the coming season and we are confident that we will be very competitive in league play.”

During the latter months of 1976 and into the early months of 1977, a lot of things were happening in the world. In the political world, Jimmy Carter, then the Governor of Georgia, was on his way to being elected President of the United States over Gerald Ford. On the football field, the Oakland Raiders, led by a coach named Madden and a quarterback nicknamed “Snake,” were on their way to capturing Super Bowl XI. On the television, a fictitious group of high school kids called the “Sweat Hogs” were keeping us in stitches every week on “Welcome Back Kotter.” And on the silver screen, we were preparing to go to “a galaxy far, far away.”

And in Hammond, an already successful women’s basketball team was about to make history. Not just in Tangipahoa Parish or the state of Louisiana, but on the national scene. The 1976-77 AIAW Small College National Championship team is a proud highlight in Southeastern’s rich athletic history. In its third year of existence, the Lady Lions added to an already glittering array of accomplishments after going 52-4 in their first two campaigns under the ever-successful Linda Puckett. In 2006-07, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this feat.

Southeastern Louisiana University Women’s Basketball

1976-77 AIAW National Champions Led by the solid all-around play of Pam Cook and the dominating inside presence of Queen Brumfield and Sarah Williams, the Lady Lions outscored their opposition by over 36 points per game and produced 15 contests in which they scored 100 or more points. Starting in impressive fashion, the Lady Lions won their first 12 games to open the season, scoring 100 or more points in seven games to earn the reputation as the nation’s highest scoring team. Southeastern suffered its first loss at the University of Texas Tournament, where it lost 80-79 to Stephen F. Austin where it missed a last second shot. In the tournament, however, Southeastern defeated Trinity University and Texas en route to the finals. That performance catapulted Southeastern into the top-15 among small colleges, a position it would remain in for the remainder of the season. The Lady Lions tallied eight consecutive wins coming out of the Texas Tournament before losing to LSU, which finished second overall in the Major College AIAW Tournament. During that stretch were victories over Louisiana Tech and a 106-69 trouncing of LSU. The 101-77 loss at LSU would be the final loss of the season for the Lady Lions as they rolled through the LAIAW Small College Tournament with ease, pounding Louisiana College and McNeese State twice. Southeastern hosted the AIAW Regional Tournament in Cefalu Coliseum and started out the tournament with a 132-50 thrashing of Central Arkansas, which still stands as the largest margin of victory in Lady Lion history. The Lady Lions came back with a convincing win over Southern Arkansas before defeating Phillips (Okla.) University, a team that finished third in the nation the previous season. For the Lady Lions, it was off to Pomona, Calif., where they would compete in the National AIAW Tournament for the second consecutive season. In 1975-76, the Lady Lions finished fifth in the nation with a 30-2 overall record. For Southeastern to improve on the 1975-76 performance, it would have to have solid play from its starters along with

its bench. After opening the tournament with a 91-50 win over Dayton, the Lady Lions knocked off previously unbeaten High Point (N.C.) University in convincing fashion, 112-85. That win advanced Southeastern to a date with defending national champion Berry (Ga.) College with a berth in the championship game on the line. Against Berry, Southeastern overcame injuries and foul trouble to key players, getting excellent play from its reserves as the prevailed, 86-81, and moved on to the championship game. In a rematch from the AIAW Region IV Tournament, Southeastern faced Phillips University fr the Small College National Championship and took a 92-76 victory giving the Lady Lions the national championship. The 1976-77 Southeastern team, which recorded 18 games with 100 or more points, still holds five single season records, including a 99.1 scoring average. Individually. five records still remain in the record books as Williams pulled down a single-game record 27 rebounds against Southern. On the season, Williams’ 13.8 rebound average is best in school history. Brumfield blocked 80 shots and Cook still holds records for steals (117) and consecutive free throws (26).

hammond: Crossroads of the South A

pioneering railroad town, Hammond, Louisiana, has been a staple of Northshore life since 1830 when Peter Hammond decided to call a tract of land 55 miles outside of New Orleans home. Hammond was originally from Sweden, and moved to the area to manufacture products from the resin in pine trees, and ship them to New Orleans. Railroad is the reason behind the city’s success, and in 1854, the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad pumped people and money into this small, pioneer town. A flag station just a block away from the current train depot was called “Hammond’s Crossing” and brought handfuls of new people to town. Peter Hammond was so convinced that the railroad would bring people to the city that he signed a contract with the rail company that forced the trains to stop every time they passed through Hammond. Five years after the railroad came to town, another staple in Hammond’s past arrived. Charles Emery Cate moved his family into the area in 1859 from New Orleans because of the natural springs, lush pine forests, and desirable climate. Cate immediately began to help the city grow. Cate built a factory, sold crossties, tar, and turpentine as well as laying out city streets and planting oak trees along the curbs. During the Civil War, Cate owned a shoe factory that made and shipped shoes to the

Confederate Army. His factory sent nearly 45,000 shoes to the soldiers before being found by Union Soldiers who destroyed the factory. At the turn of the 20th century, Hammond struck gold—in the form of red. With the development of the strawberry industry, Hammond saw another explosion in growth. The city became a center for growing, processing, and shipping strawberries. Boxcar loads of strawberries became a staple of the area and as trains left the city headed north, the money flowed south. Hammond prospered throughout the rest of the 20th century. Planes began flying into the area and a university came to town. Industry moved in, and with it, more people. As the interstate corridors of I-55 and I-12 developed, Hammond’s footprint did too. People are choosing Hammond because of its close proximity between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Hammond is thirty miles from Baton Rouge, and fifty- five miles from New Orleans. More shops, restaurants, and culture are less than an hour drive. Small town living with big city flare gives Hammond a lifestyle edge.
