CASS Information Systems Joined The Center The Saint Louis University Center for Supply Chain Management Studies (CSCMS) announced that CASS Information Systems joined the CSCMS as a regular member organization. “CASS Information Systems recently expanded its supply chain operations globally and two organizations will collaborate to produce research and working papers in supply chain, freight movements and logistics areas, and the CSCMS is looking forward a close working relationship with CASS Information System,” said Ik-Whan Kwon, Director of the CSCMS. CASS Information Systems was an original sponsor of the Annual Logistics Report under the leadership of late Mr. Bob Delaney. The annual Report is currently published by the CSCMP as Ms. Rosalyn Wilson a leading researcher.

The Center Welcomes New Board Member from CASS The Center for Supply Chain Management Studies is pleased to add Mr. Frank Cirimele, Director of Product Development at CASS Information Systems, to its Advisory Board.

At Cass Information Systems, Cirimele is the Director of Products and Services, leading Cass’ growth initiatives including the current Global Expansion Project. Prior to joining Cass, Cirimele experience includes leading global logistics software start-up ventures as well as senior operations management and business development responsibilities for global logistics industry leaders including DHL Worldwide Express, Circle International, and BAX Global.

In the public sector, Cirimele is a recognized expert on global trade and the practical application of effective global logistics strategies. He has represented the United States on the United Nations International Trade Procedures Working Group (UN/CEFACT ITPWG), which addresses trade facilitation and global e-commerce issues. Frank was also selected as a private sector expert, by the U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, to join the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Committee on Electronic Commerce.

Product Safety and Health Regional Workshop Held at Saint Louis University Attendees from government, industry, and product safety organizations gathered in St. Louis at the Cook School for a full day workshop on "Supply Chain Risk and Management-From Design to Retail." Richard Hackman of Procter & Gamble set the tone for the day by examining the full scope of daily risks that affect companies such as P&G and others, and how critical it is to have a plan to respond to these crises. A focus on compliance issues at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was led by agency staffers Hank Tapey, who discussed import surveillance and inspection procedures, and Mark Schoem, who discussed priorities at the agency during the upcoming year, including surveillance activities at retail and on the internet, as well as recall effectiveness and reporting obligations. CPSC Commissioner Robert Adler discussed activity on the agency's pubic data base, and introduced the topic of a greater focus on product safety issues affecting seniors.

Dean Woodard, Director of the CPSC Office of Education, Global Outreach and Small Business Ombudsman, led a session that featured industry officials discussing specific challenges their companies faced and ways in which they approach compliance responsibilities.

The Center, in cooperation with the International Consumer Product Safety and Health Organization (ICPHSO), held a one-day workshop on Risk Management in Product Safety on August 13, 2012 at the John Cook School of Business, Saint Louis University. More than 70 people from all over the country attended. Commissioner Robert Adler from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) delivered a keynote speech.

Product Safety Class Completes 2012 Course The 2012 graduates of the Certificate in Product Safety Management at Saint Louis University completed their course with a 2-day closing workshop, August 6-7 at the John Cook School of Business. Students made presentations, followed by questions from their peers and the faculty of the program. Some topics included risk identification, quality assurance programs, product testing strategies, document management, and software systems to improve product safety management. In a confidential environment, class members were able to apply product safety principles and topics from the course directly to issues or challenges within their organization. Topics were developed by students working in conjunction with their management. The highly sophisticated case study presentations, where each student presented on their topic of research and how their research would benefit their organizations, were the cornerstone of the closing workshop.

Fall 2012 Advanced Supply Chain Management Certificate Program The fall session began on August 23rd. The class has thirty students and is one of the largest in several semesters. The certificate program has five courses starting with Project Management in the Supply Chain, then Inventory Management, Strategic Sourcing, Transportation and Warehousing. The final course is Risk Management and concludes with project presentations on December 14, 2012.

Center Workshops in September, 2012 “Managing Inventory for Increased Profitability” - September 20 and 21 This course is part of the core courses required to earn a certificate in Advanced Supply Chain Management. It can also be taken as an independent course for those who have a primary interest in inventory management.

Key topics in the course include: Developing of an understanding of the role of managing supply chain inventories in the business environment.

How to use a variety of analytical tools, skills and techniques to solve supply chain problems.

The key measurements required for successfully managing inventories in supply chain operations.

How to achieve the optimal balance and trade-offs between customer service, inventory levels and investment.

“Advanced Product Safety Management” - September 24 through 28 Key topics in the course include: Compliance and regulations: tracing decision-making for a “product in crisis” at various decision-making points where a professional must understand the balance between regulatory requirements and meeting the company product safety goals.

Court and agency decisions: a review of recent decisions that influence the product safety and liability field and company decision-making. This section will include steps a company should consider to be prepared for litigation.

Product investigations: class members will be assigned mock investigations to determine the nature of field reports of a hazardous product and steps that need to be taken to protect a company’s brand and consumer loyalty in a regulatory environment.

“Advanced Product Safety Management” key topics (continued from previous page): Supply chain management: most companies rely on a well-managed system of suppliers to meet production and product safety goals. This segment will examine what happens when a supply chain system breaks down.

Risk assessment: Class members will examine the full scope of a risk assessment system operating in a global economy where the importance of collaborative commerce grows daily. Each student will be responsible for developing a risk assessment plan for presentation to management.

Standards and harmonization: This segment will include an assessment of different information sources necessary in operating production and distribution in a global economy. A template for action will be examined.

Product recall and retrieval: Every consumer product company faces the risk of having a hazardous product in the market place that must be recalled. The challenge of preparedness is thoroughly examined, along with steps a company can take to develop a realistic plan of action.

Class members will collaborate in developing webinars on product safety topics that are “hot button” issues, as a course follow-up activity.

This course will also feature speakers from organizations and government agencies that influence product safety decisions that every company makes.
