WELCOME
FROM THE RECTOR
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
Happy new year! We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
As we begin this new year, I hope you’ve made your financial pledge of support to help us extend our mission and ministry in 2025. Please click the QR code below to learn more about our plans and make your gift today—we need you! Today we kick off a new semester of Sunday classes for all ages at 10 a.m. Please see the back of the bulletin for the offerings and plan to join us. I hope you’ll join us next Sunday, January 19 at 4 p.m., for Epiphany Lessons & Carols, the conclusion of the cycle of observances that began in Advent and continued through Christmas. This service will feature both our Traditional and Contemporary music ministries and will include familiar hymns and music newly arranged for this service. Come and bring a friend as we celebrate the light of Christ shining throughout the world.
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

“O love, how deep, how broad, how high” Deus tuorum militum
The Opening Acclamation (standing)
Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
Celebrant There is one Body and one Spirit;
People There is one hope in God’s call to us;
Celebrant One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism.
People One God and Father of all.
Song of Praise (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 278
“Glory to God”
The Collect of the Day (standing)
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
The flowers adorning the altar are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving of the marriage of Briana Bouldin and Charles Carson.
J.S. Bach encircles the then-known title hymn about Jesus’s baptism with a trio. The trio’s flowing bass line is thought to represent the flowing waters of the Jordan River, while the upper two voices outline a cross figure. Thus, a musical picture of a baptism in a river is created. The hymn melody (Hymn 139) is heard in sustained notes in between the bass line and upper voices.
Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.
Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by Percy Buck.
The Lesson (seated)
Isaiah 43:1-7
Thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, “Give them up,” and to the south, “Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth—everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
The Psalm (seated) Psalm 29: 1-4, 7, 10-11
Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, * ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; * worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the LORD is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; * the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; * the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore.
The LORD shall give strength to his people; * the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.
Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 132, v. 3
“ Within the Jordan’s sacred flood” Erhalt uns, Herr
The Gospel (standing) Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”... Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. O ver it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)
L isten, sweet dove Grayston Ives
Listen sweet dove unto my song, And spread thy golden wings in me; Hatching my tender heart so long, Till it get wing and flie away with thee.
Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow
The earth did like a heav’n appear, The starres were coming down to know If they might mend their wages and serve here.
The sunne which once did shine alone, Hung down his head and wisht for night, When he beheld twelve sunnes for one
Going about the world and giving light.
Lord though we change thou art the same, The same sweet God of love and light; Restore this day for thy great name, Unto his ancient and miraculous right.
- George Herbert, 1633
Presentation Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 380, v. 3
“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow” Old 100th
Give online by selecting General 2025 from the dropdown menu.
The text of this anthem is derived from the poem “Whitsunday” by 17th-century Welsh poet, orator, Member of Parliament, and Anglican priest George Herbert. It reflects on the spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit granted the apostles and petitions for the restoration of these gifts to all believers, empowering them to share His light with others.
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing)
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant L ift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to g ive thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) Hymn S 128
“Holy, holy, holy”
Please kneel as you are able.
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and g ave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for
many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
All We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these g ifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
Recently retired as Director of Music at the Washington National Cathedral, Michael McCarthy previously founded and directed the London Oratory School Schola, which quickly became one of London’s leading boys’ concert choirs. Under his direction, the Schola recorded music for films such as Sleepy Hollow, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. The “Vidi aquam” text, used in the Latin Eastertide ritual since the 12th century, describes the prophet’s vision of water flowing from the temple. McCarthy composed this setting for the Investiture of Presiding Bishop Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori at the Washington National Cathedral in November 2006.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
