9 AM NATIVITY PAGEANT Church

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Today we celebrate one of our wonderful Saint Michael traditions: The Nativity Pageant! I give thanks for all the people who made today’s experience possible, a memory that will stick with our children for a lifetime. I hope you’re taking advantage of our newest season of Weekday Meditations that began on Monday. These daily meditations from the clergy of Saint Michael help to center us each day as we walk through the holy season together. I’m also happy to announce that this year’s Saint Michael Christmas ornaments are now on sale. Please see the Sunday News handout for purchasing information. You can also find wonderful ways to serve through Saint Michael. Please stop by one of the tables around the campus and talk with one of our wonderful volunteers.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Principal Cast

Johannes Brahms composed his setting of “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen” near the end of his life, and it was published posthumously. The serene nature of the music reflects a deep joy and trust in God, mirroring the chorale’s text.

This prelude by Johannes Pachelbel is a partita on Hymn 67: “Comfort, comfort ye my people.” This 17th-century Advent hymn conveys John the Baptist’s message to prepare the way of the Lord, revealing God’s glory as Christ brings peace and joy. Listen for the hymn’s simple melody, which Pachelbel elaborates in various ways.

Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

This is the record of John Orlando Gibbons

This is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly, I am not the Christ.

And they asked him, What art thou then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not.

Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

Then said they unto him, What art thou? that we may give an answer unto them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? And he said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord.

Presentation Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 380, v. 3 “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow” Old 100th

Give online by selecting General 2024 from the dropdown menu.

“This is the record of John” is a verse anthem based on a text from the Gospel of John in the Geneva Bible, and is a characteristic Anglicanstyle composition of its time. “John” (whose record is being told) refers to John the Baptist. The piece is divided into three sections, each beginning with a verse for solo tenor, followed by a full section (choir), echoing words of the verse.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

The Great Thanksgiving (standing)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant L ift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continues.

Dear God, we give you thanks for the many blessings you give to us. We thank for the beauty of the world, for our families and friends, and for your love for us.

We especially thank you for your son, Jesus. With this offering of bread and wine, we remember his sacrifice and proclaim his resurrection until he comes again.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body, which is g iven for you. Do this when you remember me.”

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, given for you. Do this when you remember me.”

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. Set them apart by your Holy Spirit to be for us the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Gather us all together and make us living examples of him. Help us to live as your sons and daughters, and to show others how to live with faith, with hope, and with love.

All this we ask in the name of your son, Jesus, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit is with us wherever we may be and who is our friend and guide. AMEN.

Let us say the prayer Jesus has taught us:

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (kneeling, sung by all) Hymn S 152

“Alleluia, Christ our Passover”

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Communion Hymn (sung by all)

Hymn 54

“Savior of the nations, come!” Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland All are invited to come forward to the two standing stations for Communion at the direction of the ushers. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

In 1953, Paul Manz’s three-year-old son was critically ill and not expected to survive. During this trying time, Manz composed this anthem. A devoted Lutheran church musician, Manz masterfully blends compositional techniques from the Renaissance and Baroque eras to create a deeply heartfelt piece. The text, written by his wife Ruth, expresses both resignation to God’s will and hope for the future during their son’s illness, drawing many parallels to the themes of the Advent season.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come Paul Manz

Peace be to you and grace from Him

Who freed us from our sins, Who loved us all and shed His blood That we might saved be. Sing Holy, Holy to our Lord, The Lord, Almighty God, Who was and is and is to come; Sing Holy, Holy, Lord!

Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, Rejoice on earth, ye saints below, For Christ is coming, is coming soon, For Christ is coming soon!

E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, And night shall be no more; They need no light nor lamp nor sun, For Christ will be their All!

- from Revelation 22

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing (kneeling)

The Dismissal (standing)

Postlude

Rhapsody on Helmsley

William Lloyd Webber

Written circa 1955, today’s postlude is based on the wellknown hymn tune Helmsley, which derives its theological content from the Book of Revelation, relating imagery of the Day of Judgment. It was dedicated to John Churchill, who at that time was the organist at St Martin-in-the-Fields church.
