OUR FOCUS: Build Christian Disciples for a Transformed Community Rob Springer-Kyle leads our Welcome and Engagement ministries at Saint Michael and he would love the opportunity to connect and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to contact him at (903) 405-7447 or rspringer-kyle@saintmichael.org. We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today! We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. The schedule for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services can be found in this bulletin. It will be a beautiful celebration and we can’t wait to see you there! As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS EPISCOPAL CHURCH HOLY EUCHARIST: RITE II 11:00 A.M. December 17, 2023 WELCOME SONG Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace! Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! Oh, fix me on it, mount of God’s redeeming love. Here I find my greatest treasure Hither by thy help I've come And I hope by thy good pleasure Safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger Wondering from the fold of God He to rescue me from danger Interposed his precious blood Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. THE LESSON
1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-24
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SONG Come Thou long expected Jesus Born to set Thy people free

THE GOSPEL
JOHN 1:6-8, 19-28
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’” as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. The Gospel of the Lord.
4 Praise to you Lord Christ. SERMON
THE REVEREND ROBIN HINKLE
NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
5 We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People: Form III Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. CONCLUDING COLLECT Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION
6
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. THE PEACE The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. OFFERTORY SENTENCE Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. OFFERTORY SONG My soul proclaims his greatness My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior For he has looked on his servant, Poured out his favor upon me From this day all generations will call me blessed, will call me blessed I am blessed, oh I am blessed He has remembered his people Fulfilled his Promise, giving his mercy to us
MAGNIFICAT (SONG OF MARY)
7 For he has lifted the lowly Filled up the hungry with good things From this day all generations will call me blessed, will call me blessed I am blessed, oh I am blessed Let my soul rejoice and bless The Lord Let my soul rejoice and bless The Lord From this day all generations will call me blessed, will call me blessed I am blessed, oh I am blessed From this day all generations will call me blessed, will call me blessed I am blessed, oh I am blessed Adapted from Luke 1:46-55 Words and music by Justin Brooks and David Gentiles © 2011 Elgie Street Music (ASCAP)
COMMUNION RITE II PRAYER A The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. [ Here the Celebrant includes a proper preface ] Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
8
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
9 All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. COMMUNION SONG Lo! he comes with clouds descending, once for our salvation slain; thousand, thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ the Lord returns to reign. Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at nought and sold him,
LO, HE COMES WITH CLOUDS DESCENDING
10 pierced, and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshipers; with what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture, gaze we on those glorious scars! Yea, amen! let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Savior, take the power and glory; claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. Words by Charles Wesley Music by Martin Madan Arrangement by Justin Brooks (c) 2023 Elgie Street Music (ASCAP)
POST COMMUNION PRAYER Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE BLESSING The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Annual Giving Campaign Giving to our annual stewardship campaign, Building the Kingdom, is an essential practice that supports Saint Michael’s shared mission and ministry, including our growing staff, campus, and programs. While essential to our operations, giving annually is an incredibly important spiritual discipline. An annual gift represents our stewardship of the time, talents, and treasures that God gives freely to each one of us. Giving back to God’s work through Saint Michael is a sign of gratitude and a key part of deepening our discipleship identity. It’s our turn to invest in our future. This year we will be sharing Christmas joy with our friends at Stephen C. Foster Elementary through our first annual toy drive for the students grades PreK through 6th grade! We hope all Saint Michael parishioners will consider donating new toys (cost limit $35) toward our goal of collecting 500 toys. Families are especially encouraged to shop together so that our young members may bring a new toy to share with our neighbors. This drive is a joint effort of Mission and Outreach, Children and Family Ministries, and Saint Michael Episcopal School. Collection boxes will be placed in church and school entrances, and in the Sunday School Hallway.

Tela Honduras Mission
For fourteen years, every February a group of Saint Michael missionaries returns to Tela, Honduras, to work and worship in partnership with Espiritu Santo, an Episcopal Church and day school. In the local barrios as well as at church, we work with parishioners and senior class members to provide more than 350 children with fluoride treatments, along with toothbrushes and toothpaste, to fit over 200 adults with reading glasses and sunglasses, and to engage more than 450 students in Christian education, which includes storytelling, singing, and crafts.
Tela Honduras Mission Trip February 17 – 24, 2024
Saint Michael will send a team to Tela, Honduras February 17-24, 2024, as we continue our longtime work in this community. For more info, please contact George Baldwin gbinvest@swbell.net.
Amistad, Bolivia Youth Houses
Since 2000, Saint Michael has supported the orphaned children and adolescents of Villa Amistad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, helping to successfully bring them to independent living through life in transitional youth houses. During the pandemic, the adolescents were particularly affected by the isolation of quarantine. Our support will help them receive the educational, medical, spiritual, and emotional support they need to overcome their traumatic past.
Amistad Bolivia Youth Mission Trip July 29 – August 8, 2024 Registration open now.
The trip, led by the Rev. Robin Hinkle and the Saint Michael Youth Minister, Sam Moore, takes place from July 29 – August 8, 2024, at Villa Amistad in Bolivia. For more information, contact The Rev. Robin Hinkle at rhinkle@saintmichael.org.
