The Journey of Lent: The Beginning of Hope

Lent at Saint Michael has been a filling journey for me. We have been refilled in body, mind, and spirit this season, in so many ways. We have been examining the different ways we search for and are found by God when we open ourselves up to the Spirit. Lent is one of those times that has been traditionally understood as dark and penitent, but could be understood as an opportunity to sit in God’s lap. If we pause from the business of life, try to put down everything that weighs on us, we have the chance to hear God’s “still small voice” speak to us in new ways. It is my deep hope that you are taking advantage of this season to clarify and renew your relationship with God and the ways in which you can respond to God’s unique call on your life. As we continue to move through this sacred season of Lent, we are now only a few days away from the most profound Christian experience of year: Holy Week and Easter. Holy Week has always meant a lot to me personally, but the depth and beauty of Holy Week at Saint Michael is unmatched. We begin the journey this year with a dynamic Palm Sunday service, and this year, our main services will be accompanied by festive bagpipes, drums, and fifes (not to be missed!). Palm Sunday is guaranteed to be uplifting. The services that follow Palm Sunday walk us through the greatest story ever told in stunning, experiential beauty. The Paschal Triduum is the period of three days that begins with Maundy Thursday, continued on page 15

Holy Week to Easter Sunday God became Incarnate in Jesus, the Christ. He came, not as a conquering hero, but as a suffering servant. Palm Sunday to Celebrate Family Worship This year Palm Sunday worship will be a celebration of Christâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s triumphal entry into Jerusalem for the entire family. At both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services parishioners are encouraged to gather at the ESD porte cochere for the Liturgy of the Palms and the parade to the Church led by bagpipes, drums, and fifes. The Joy Mass and Discovery Mass will join in the church for family worship. At 11:00 those attending the Celebration service will continue to Parish Hall following the Liturgy of the Palms. A light reception will be available in the South Lanai between the worship services. 2

Two Easter Egg Hunts Planned Saturday, April 15

Our Easter Offerings will go to three ministries that help us to remember to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

There will be Easter Eggs galore on Saturday April 15. Two Easter Egg hunts will be held: one at 10:00 for children in the second grade and younger on the Saint Michael Episcopal School playground, and a “Glow in the Dark” hunt at 7:30 p.m. for the 3rd – 5th graders on the ESD field.

Family Pictures on Easter Dad has a new tie, Mom a fresh spring outfit, the kids have new shoes, or are back from college, maybe parents or grandparents are visiting. Get them all together for church Easter Sunday and a family picture. On Easter Sunday, there will be several photo booths set up at locations throughout the church to take family pictures, and you will get a 4 x 6 print to take with you. There is no cost. Take advantage of this opportunity and celebrate Easter with your family at Saint Michael and All Angels.

Easter Flower Memorials If you would like to remember a loved one this Easter, fill out one of the Flower Memorial envelopes enclosed in the worship bulletin with the names of those you want to honor either in Memory or Thanksgiving and return it with your check by Sunday, April 9. Flower Memorial envelopes are also available at the reception desk.

Bring a Special Easter to Our Homebound The beautiful Easter Altar flowers are delivered after the worship services to parishioners in the hospital or homebound. Help make Easter a little brighter for those in need by delivering some of the flowers on Easter afternoon. It will take about two hours and will brighten your celebration, too. Mission Outreach The Rev. Hunter Ruffin Called to Start New Church in Fort Worth Diocese The Rev. Hunter Ruffin, associate for Mission and Outreach, is leaving Saint Michael and All Angels to start a new Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Fort Worth. In announcing the call, Rector Chris Girata said, “Hunter is responding to the call God has put in his heart to engage directly in missionary work…we will certainly miss his joyful presence, his infectious laughter, and, most of all, his inspired leadership of our Mission and Outreach Ministry.” We will celebrate Fr. Ruffin’s ministry at Saint Michael at a reception on Sunday, April 30. Those wishing to contribute to a purse for Fr. Ruffin should send a check to the church marked “Fr. Ruffin’s Purse.” (read the Rector’s announcement at www. saintmichael.org.) In a letter to the Parish, Fr. Ruffin said, “The zeal for sharing God’s love with all our neighbors that I have experienced at Saint Michael has kept me buoyant and has now called me into a new ministry…I have accepted God’s call, and now I ask your blessing as I embark on this next step of my ministry…Please pray for me as I venture into unchartered territory…” His last Sunday at Saint Michael will be May 7 and he will start in the Fort Worth Diocese in early June. (read Fr. Ruffin’s letter at www.saintmichael.org.) Fr. Ruffin’s new church will be in a new residential and mixed use development on the former Walsh Ranch in Parker County, just west of Fort Worth. Fort Worth Bishop Scott Mayer said, “The hiring of Fr. Ruffin is another example of this diocese’ willingness to look at new ways of doing things. Before, a diocese might secure land, put a building on it, and hope people would come. But growing a church plant more organically makes sense in today’s world. Fr. Ruffin brings the talents and strengths we need in this place at this time.”

Bolivia Trip Serves at Amistad Mission and

Visits Historic Churches Several Saint Michael missioners spent the last week in March

at the Amistad Mission in Cochabamba, Bolivia serving the abandoned and orphaned children living there. They enjoyed everything from Bible study to roasting marsh mellows with the children. Toward the end of the week, the group traveled to Santa Cruz

and toured Jesuit Missions which were founded between 1696 and 1760, and are now a World Heritage Cultural site.

Jubilee Park SMU Simmons Luminary Awards honors Jubilee Park and Community Center The Jubilee Park and Community Center was honored Wednesday, March 29 with a Luminary Award given by SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development. The Award honors individuals and organizations that have shown an extraordinary commitment to improving people’s lives through education. Simmons School Interim Dean Dr. Paige Ware said, “The Jubilee Park and Community Center was founded in 1997 by Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on the basis of love and respect. In celebration of its Jubilee anniversary, the church chose to bring hope to one of the most underserved areas in the city of Dallas…Twenty years later, Jubilee Park and Community Center is a catalyst for comprehensive community revitalization and enrichment in southeast Dallas, with emphasis on the education of children and adults.” Jubilee’s campus includes the Walt Humann - T. Boone Pickens Community Center, a resource center, two Head Start schools, a senior housing complex and a three-acre park. Each year, 14 staff members and more than 800 volunteers provide services and education to more than 1,100 individuals. Jubilee focuses its work in five key areas: Public safety, public health, affordable housing, economic development and – central to all of its work – education.

Jubilee Sunday to Celebrate Neighbors Working With Neighbors On Sunday, April 23 more than 100 residents from the Jubilee Park community will join us at Saint Michael as we celebrate 20 years as neighbors working with neighbors. The Jubilee Park contingent will arrive around 9:00 a.m. and treat their Saint Michael neighbors to a breakfast in the Garden Cloister. At the 11:00 worship service in the Church the Jubilee Park residents will participate in the service as acolytes and readers, provide multi-cultural music, and a senior resident will tell about the changes she has seen over the 20 years since Saint Michael and Jubilee residents have been working together. Jubilee Park has been recognized nationally for its program to renew and rebuild its community.

Ben Leal to be Honored by Dallas Business Journal Ben Leal, parishioner, Vestry member, and CEO of Jubilee Park, will be honored by the Dallas Business Journal at its 40 Under 40 Awards celebration May 18. Leal is among 40 North Texas men and women in business, all under 40 years old, that were chosen by the publication because they “represent innovation and excellence in their fields. These dynamic leaders have shaped our community in ways that have made North Texas a better place to live and do business,” the paper said.

The cook-off challenge will be at Trinity Groves on Monday evening, May 1, beginning at 6:00. (Trinity Groves is located on Singleton Boulevard just west of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.) The Warden’s Corner Vestry Retreat: A Report

• Supporting the transition and growth of Saint Michael Episcopal School in partnership with the church

“People tend to overestimate what can get accomplished in a year and underestimate what can get accomplished in 10 years.” It was against this backdrop that the Vestry held its annual retreat over a two day period recently. As a reminder, over 900 parishioners completed a detailed survey in September 2015 that provided rich feedback Eric Conner, Sr. Warden and commentary (over 3,200 comments) on Saint Michael’s dreams and aspirations, and clarified the desired profile for the new rector. This profile was instrumental in finding such a wonderfully strategic and visionary rector in Chris (who started 9 months ago). These events provided context and texture to accomplish two key objectives at the retreat: to develop a vision for our church for the next 5-10 years and to discern the accompanying 20172018 imperatives and initiatives.

• Instituting processes and support for additional small group ministries We cannot wait for the final deliverables, as it will determine Saint Michael’s vision for years to come and determine the primary use of our resources (lay leadership, financial and staff) for the next 18 months. On a different note, we also refinanced the debt on the Lomo Alto building with more competitive and extended terms (thanks to a team headed by Blair Oden). Finally, the Refresh, Renew and Revive effort is going very well as we proceed toward our $600K goal. Please take a moment to consider this very important effort to improve our sanctuary space and our overall worship experience. I encourage each of you to continue to engage in spirited and meaningful discussions with your Vestry (those with the special red name tags) as we help chart our very exciting future.

These initiatives by design take on three characteristics: • They are crafted on one page for conciseness and clarity • They are appropriately impactful yet accomplishable by December 2018. • They serve as the stepping stones to achieve the grander vision. The goal is to finalize the initiatives in the next 45 days after the staff and other lay leaders have a chance to review and comment. Some of the initiatives being considered are: • Implementing a member integration program • Implementing dynamic technology systems (CRM, web, mobile) to engage and serve our members • Finalizing a campus plan (after the ESD departure) that will transform Saint Michael • Elevating the music program to enhance worship, formation, and educational experiences

Overview The Feast of Lights Farmers Market Opens Saturday, April 29 Saint Michael’s Farmers Market will begin its sixth season on Saturday, April 29 with nearly 30 vendors, more than a dozen of which are new. The Market is open on Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 12:00 Noon on the north parking lot. Most of the market’s original vendors are returning with their cornucopia of fresh-from- the-farm/bakery/kitchen products; fresh vegetables of the season, eggs, grass-fed beef and lamb, breads, desserts, and cheeses. New products this year include Greek and South American bakery goods, Texas honey, tarts, mustards, jellies, and just-roasted coffees. John Crawford Honored for Downtown Work Parishioner John Crawford, former president and CEO of Downtown Dallas, Inc. was presented the Pioneer Award at the 2017 Commercial Real Estate Awards program. During Crawford’s tenure more than $5 billion of investment was made in downtown Dallas, the area’s retail absorption has increased by 20 percent, and downtown’s residential population grew by more than 185 percent. John continues as an advisor to Downtown Dallas, Inc., serving as its vice chairman

Breakfast with Jesus “What would be a better way to start your day than having breakfast with Jesus?” The Rev. Michael Harmuth posed this question at one of the 7:00 a.m. weekday services in the Bishop Moore chapel. I couldn’t agree more! About four years ago, our former Rector Bob Dannals said that going to the morning Eucharist daily “would change your life,” and I have been going daily since. Attending the morning Eucharist has had a profound impact on my spiritual journey and my relationship with God. It is a wonderful way to start each day thanking God for all the blessings of this life and offering prayers of intercession for yourself and those you love. One of the unknown jewels of the 7:00 a.m. service is the wonderful homily given by the Priest celebrating the service. They give you a great perspective to start your day. Over the years, I have consistently heard the best (and shortest) sermons at this service. Come to pray in celebration of anniversaries and birthdays, to remember family members who have died and to receive encouragement when confronting life’s challenges. Come with your entire family, children and grandchildren are welcome, and invite your friends to join you. Non-members and those of other faith traditions are welcome too. During the week, the Bishop Moore service starts at 7:00 a.m. and is over by 7:30 a.m., and on Saturdays, the service starts at 8:30 a.m. and is over by 9:00 a.m. Come and join us for “breakfast with Jesus!”

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Gathering on May 10 I am constantly struck with the number of people who labor in Christ’s name at Saint Michael, and I believe the majority of those people serve through the office of Pastoral Care. It wasn’t too long ago that I began to wonder what it would take to gather every volunteer and staff person serving the Lord through Pastoral Care into one big meeting to see old friends, renew our commitment to ministry, and hear a dynamic speaker. I do mean everyone: Good Shepherds, Knitters, LEV, Visitors, those who make cookies for funerals, those who cook meals, those who call parishioners, all people who pray, those who write notes, those who facilitate Faith and Grief, those who run Bible studies, those who run support gatherings – the list goes on and I do mean everyone! I am asking us to meet as one large group on Wednesday May 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church to renew ties and hear The Rev. Dr. Fran Shelton address us as volunteers laboring in God’s vineyard. As you may know, Fran is the founder of the Faith and Grief ministry in Dallas. She received her advanced degrees from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and her doctoral project was “Blessed are Those Who Mourn: Offering Comfort Through Worship and Theological Reflection.” Fran also has certificates in Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Direction. With Fran’s ministry experience and dynamic style, she is uniquely qualified to speak to each ministry of Pastoral Care. We all know how important it is to plan. We plan our weddings and our education, we plan for children, and our retirement. However, it is true that sometimes we neglect to attend to the details of that time when our health will decline and finally we go into everlasting life with our Lord.

Beginning on April 30, Pastoral Care will host “Organizing for Heaven.” In it, we will gather experts in the fields of legal issues, planned giving, hospice, funeral planning, and our columbarium. For three sessions, we will discuss the fundamentals of living the last few years of life in dignity. Please join us for any session or all of them.

Children and Family Ministry Edgers’ Mission Trip Going to World Hunger Relief Farm April 21 – 23 The Edge, 4th and 5th graders, will spent the April 21st weekend at the World Hunger Relief Farm in Waco for their annual mission trip. World Hunger Relief Farm is a Christian mission-based program focusing on education in sustainable agriculture and livestock with the goal of eradicating hunger throughout the world. The Edgers will participate in feeding and caring for livestock, weed and clear gardens, muck goat stables, and cook their dinner over rocket stoves. Vacation Bible School June 5-8, 9:00 – Noon Registration will open on May 1 Vacation Bible School is open to all children ages 4 (as of June 5, 2017) to upcoming 5th graders. A Message from the Vicar: Children and Family Ministry Assistant Director Accepts New Position Ancient philosopher Heraclitus famously said, “The only constant in this world is change.” Some three thousand years later, I am learning the truth of that wisdom at Saint Michael and All Angels first hand. The Rev. Chris Girata and I learned that Erika Bower has accepted a new position as Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministry at a church in Philadelphia. We celebrate the many gifts she has shared with us in her three years of ministry. While we will miss Erika’s devotion and leadership, rest assured we have a strong foundation as we search for a new Director of Children and Family Ministries. The good news is that we have an able staff of Anchor Teachers, paid Sunday School teachers, to sustain and move the program forward, and Gabrielle Ott continues to lead our catechesis program. The Rector and I have already begun conversations about how to grow and revitalize our Children and Family Ministries. We will be working together to provide exceptional ministry to the children of our community and their families. Please join us in wishing Erika and her family well.

Youth Ministry Mattie Webb: Youth Volunteer Extraordinaire

Our Youth Working in the Community

Youth Director Lauren Wainwright thought she was seeing an illusion. She knew Mattie Webb as a teenager in Alabama when she was a youth director at a church there. Now Mattie was at church at Saint Michael. How could that be?

Join us on Saturday morning April 15 for a Family Morning of Service at the Dallas Animal Shelter.

Mattie has grown up quite a bit from the days in Alabama. She went to Vanderbilt, graduated and found a job in Dallas. And now, she’s a regular volunteer with Saint Michael’s youth program. Mattie is a regular face in the Youth Center. Not only does she make time in her busy schedule to come to LiveWIRE on Wednesdays, but she went to the Winter Retreat in January and is joining the high schoolers on their mission trip to Bolivia in July. “Maddie is a consistent, friendly face in the Youth Center,” says Youth Director, Lauren Wainwright. “The kids love her and she’s super dependable. She’s just cool.” In high school, Mattie planned Diocesan-wide youth events and enjoyed being a Lay Rector for Happening. She was a cabin counselor at Camp McDowell, Alabama’s Diocesan camp, and grew up at Trinity Episcopal in Florence. Today, Mattie is a consultant at Compass Professional Health Services, hangs out with Saint Michael kids, and plays with Cooper, an Australian Shepherd puppy.

April 19 – Interfaith Housing Coalition At LiveWIRE on Wednesday evening April 19, we will be helping to clean up and prep an apartment for new tenants at the Interfaith Housing Coalition in Dallas. More details soon to come.

April 28-30 – Disciples Confirmation Retreat The Disciples Confirmation Retreat is scheduled for April 28-30 at Sky Ranch. High School teenagers interested in helping out for the weekend can contact Lauren for more information.

For Your Information continues through Good Friday, and culminates with the Great Vigil of Easter. The arc of the story is brought to life with amazing passion during those three services. This year, I invite you to intentionally walk through this passionate week by attending all three services. Jesus’ passion can seem very distant to many of us. His death and resurrection can seem so different than our life experience that if we aren’t careful, we can just go through the motions of the moment. If we aren’t, the greatest story ever told will remain just a story. But if we look a little deeper, if we garner a bit more courage, this story can change our lives. By committing the time to journey through Holy Week, you will experience the story of our faith in a deeply inspirational way. The services are designed to truly prepare our hearts and minds for the profound reality of the resurrection. The story of Jesus’ final days, the story of his death and resurrection, are not the end. This story of Jesus is just the beginning! The story of Jesus is the story of God’s greatest gift to each one of us, to the people He loves so deeply — hope. Hope is the core, the center of true goodness. Hope is the goodness that God planted deep down inside each one of us, but it often takes an extraordinary experience to help us see that we have that most beautiful hope at our deepest center. Easter Sunday, the celebration of hope’s triumph, is so much more significant when we have walked the passion of Christ in the Paschal Triduum. As we move through this holy season of Lent and into the promise of new life at Easter, we will continue to push on the deep spiritual experiences we share on Sundays. Each Sunday of the Easter season, your clergy will explore one of the many facets of hopefulness that Christ inspires in us all, including courage, grace, joy, freedom, and faith. This year has gotten off to a wonderful start. As we enter a new Easter season, the action that we take to spread God’s love in Dallas and beyond will continue to tell the story of Christ to a world that needs to hear the Good News. May God continue to bless our hearts and minds, that we may be a blessing to those we meet along the way.

The Rev. Neal Hern Dies With sadness and regret we announce the death of The Rev. George “Neal” Hern on Wednesday, March 7 following a lengthy illness. The Rev. Hern served as a priest associate for Pastoral Care at Saint Michael since 2001. His funeral will be May 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the Saint Michael Chapel.
