This Sunday, our regular Sunday worship schedule resumes. Please remember what ev. ic e K en V I said in the announcements last , n e th H a n n o n . Br week: there are people who are not yet here who would love to be here—they just need an invitation from you. Please consider inviting at least one person to church and remember to greet the ones you do not recognize. If someone is looking for more information about Saint Michael, do not hesitate to connect them with Rob Springer, our Director of Engagement, a Greeter, an Usher, a staff member, or a member of the clergy. It is important that we not only welcome people well, but also help them connect to the parish in meaningful ways. We kick off our program year next Sunday, August 14! In addition to fellowship in the Garden Cloister and blessing backpacks during worship, we will also hold a book signing for the debut of our brand new children’s book and audio series, “Stories From the Bible, From Creation to Pentecost,” based on the favorite sermons of Father Harmuth during the 9 a.m. Joy service. Both Father Harmuth and the illustrator, Travis Harvey, will be on hand to sign books. I am so proud of the work that went into the creation of this book and know you will want to purchase a copy. We can’t wait to welcome Chris Girata back from sabbatical next Sunday! I will write one more letter to the parish next weekend, and then hand this column back over to him. Thanks for reading and staying connected to Saint Michael Church.

But we need new members to bake and sell at the Sunday tables. Each member joins one of four teams and is only responsible for baking and/or selling once a month. SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS EPISCOPAL CHURCH HOLY EUCHARIST: RITE II 11:00 A.M. August 7, 2022 WELCOME SONG
COME THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING
Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace! Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! Oh, fix me on it, mount of God’s redeeming love. Here I find my greatest treasure, hither by thy help I've come And I hope by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger, wondering from the fold of God He to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood Oh, to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above. OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you.
1
And also with you. Let us pray. Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LESSON
1 JOHN 5:1-21
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a deadly sin, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one—to those whose sin is not deadly. There is sin that is deadly; I do not say that you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly. We know that those who are born of God do not sin, but the one who was born of God protects them, and the evil one does not touch them. We know that we are God’s children and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. The Word of the Lord 2
Thanks be to God SONG
OPEN UP MY EYES
Open up my eyes Open up my heart Open up my ears So I can listen Open up my eyes Open up my heart Open up my ears So I can listen Lord, let Your Word Be upon my mind And upon my lips And upon my heart Open up my eyes Open up my heart Open up my ears So I can listen Open up my eyes Open up my heart Open up my ears So I can listen Lord, let Your Word Be upon my mind And upon my lips And upon my heart THE GOSPEL
LUKE 12:32-40
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
3
Jesus said to his disciples, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. "But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ SERMON
THE REVEREND BOB JOHNSTON
NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. 4
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: FORM III Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them.
5
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. CONCLUDING COLLECT Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION “Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.” Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. THE PEACE The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. OFFERTORY SENTENCE “Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.”
OFFERTORY SONG
LET US BE KNOWN BY OUR LOVE
6
Let us be known by our love In every word in every deed honor the Son Let our light shine in every eye Let us be known by our love For the glory of the Father For the glory of the Son For the glory of the Spirit Let us be known by our love Let us be known by our joy In every home in every heart sing to the Lord Let our life show goodness and hope Let us be known by our joy For the glory of the Father For the glory of the Son For the glory of the Spirit Let us be known by our joy Let us be known by our peace In every town in every tribe Jesus is king Let us go forth heal and restore Let us be known by our peace For the glory of the Father For the glory of the Son For the glory of the Spirit Let us be known by our peace COMMUNION RITE II PRAYER A The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
7
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. [ Here the Celebrant includes a proper preface ] Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
8
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. COMMUNION SONG
PSALM 51
Have mercy on me, oh God, according to your unfailing love, according to your great compassion, Blot out my transgression,

and wash away all my iniquities, And cleanse me from my sin, for I know my transgression and my sin is always before me, Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, So that you, you are proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge, When you speak, and justified when you judge. POST COMMUNION PRAYER Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE BLESSING The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.
