NOVEMBER 6, 2022 11 AM TRADITIONAL CHURCH 11 AM CONTEMPORARY PARISH HALL

We’d love to get to know you and help you get to know us. Saint Michael is a vibrant group of people choosing to live life as a community: pursuing Jesus, caring for one another, and serving those in need.

While you’re here with us today, we’d love for you to do two things:

1. Fill out a Welcome Card. They’re in the pew back in front of you, or use the QR code to use the quick, mobile-friendly “Get in Touch” form.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

At Saint Michael we are all about connecting, serving, and growing. To learn more about us, find ways to get involved, or see a map of the campus, scan the QR code.

Welcome! I’m very glad you’ve joined us for worship today. Please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found in the pew back or on a table nearby. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

This fall, I hope you are plugging in to our wonderful midweek offerings, including weekday meditations, Bible studies, and service opportunities. All over the world

Hear the sound of your people singing Hosanna

Your saints will arise to bless Your Name Your Church will arise to bless Your Name

We join the songs of the saints Through the ages

To glorify Your Name We are the Church, crying,

1

Though we’ve been redeemed

We ask for you to come deliver us

Hosanna All over the world

Hear the sound of your people singing Hosanna

Your saints will arise to bless Your Name

Your Church will arise to bless Your Name

OPENING ACCLAMATION

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen

COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE LESSON EPHESIANS 1:11 23

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had

“Lord, come and save us”
Let our hearts be set aflame

believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who

begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

5

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: FORM III

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

6
CONCLUDING COLLECT

Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION

“Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.”

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

“Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.”

OFFERTORY SONG HYMN OF HEAVEN

How I long to breathe the air of Heaven Where pain is gone and mercy fills the streets

To look upon the one who bled to save me And walk with Him for all eternity

There will be a day When all will bow before Him

7

There will be a day

When death will be no more Standing face to face With He who died and rose again Holy holy is the Lord

And ev'ry prayer we prayed in desperation The songs of faith We sang through doubt and fear In the end we’ll see that it was worth it When He returns to wipe away our tears

There will be a day When all will bow before Him There will be a day When death will be no more Standing face to face With He who died and rose again Holy holy is the Lord

And on that day we join the resurrection And stand beside the heroes of the faith With one voice a thousand generations Sing worthy is the Lamb who was slain Forever He shall reign

So let it be today We shout the hymn of Heaven With angels and the Saints We raise a mighty roar Glory to our God Who gave us life beyond the grave

Holy holy is the Lord Holy holy is the Lord Holy holy is the Lord

8

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

[ Here the Celebrant includes a proper preface ]

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

9 COMMUNION RITE II PRAYER A

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

JERUSALEM MY HAPPY HOME

Jerusalem, my happy home, when shall I come to thee? When shall my sorrows have an end? Thy joys when shall I see?

Thy saints are crowned with glory great; they see God face to face; they triumph still, they still rejoice in that most happy place.

There David stands with harp in hand as master of the choir: ten thousand times would one be blest who might this music hear.

Our Lady sings Magnificat with tune surpassing sweet, and blessed martyrs' harmony doth ring in every street.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, God grant that I may see thine endless joy, and of the same partaker ever be!

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, and the blessing of God

11 COMMUNION SONG

Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

New Adult Formation Offerings

READING THE BIBLE FOR ALL ITS WORTH

Led by Dr. Tim Smith

Sundays, Today – November 20

10 a.m. in Saint Michael Chapel

The Bible was written over the course of 1500 years by more than 30 different authors, in nine different genres, on three different continents, each one with a unique time, place, and context. If that’s not enough, understanding Scripture is complicated all the more by the fact that we are separated from the text through time, culture, and worldview. Most of us have never been taught how to read and interpret the Bible in its original context. The goal of this class is to get you excited and re-engaged in discovering God’s Word anew by learning the original meaning of a text. To do that, we’ll teach you some frameworks, and share tools and resources that will forever change how you engage and read God’s Word.

OUTRAGEOUS PRAYERS OF THE BIBLE

Led by Dr. Elizabeth Lang Sundays, Today–November 20

10 a.m. in the Coke Room

Some faithful Christians are reluctant to pray because they are concerned that they are not doing it right, especially if they are not using a prayerbook. Elizabeth Lang will lead us in examining a variety of prayers in the Bible so that we can discover what speaks to each of us about prayer. There are many questions and answers that come from exploring outrageous prayers in the Bible. These may free us to pray with honesty and faith.

CLASS FOR PARENTS

Led by the Rev. Christian Basel Sundays, November 13–December 18 10 a.m. in the Theater

The Class for Parents will begin a new six-week study on “The Case for Christ,” by Lee Strobel, which confronts the difficult questions around who Christ is and will help to equip us in both understanding and discussing faith with our families. Please join us!

GRASP DALLAS CHAPTER Grief Recovery After Substance Passing Thursday, November 10 6:30 p.m. in the Parlor

GRASP was created to offer understanding, compassion, and support for those who have lost someone they love through addiction and overdose. Anyone who has lost a loved one through substance use knows that society treats this loss differently than a death from any other cause. Everyone who wants to find a safe place to express their concern, grief, and walk toward understanding and grief recovery is welcome.
