Saint Michael 101 – A Quick Course on Membership. If you or some of your friends want to know about Saint Michael and membership in the church, Saint Michael 101 on Sunday, January 22 is the place. Discovery Begins January 29 – Learn About Our Church. Discovery is a new 5-week course starting Sunday, January 29 designed for newcomers and members entering a new phase in life. The course addresses the question, “What is God calling me to do next?” It will explore the history of Christianity and the Anglican Church, Saint Michael’s unique mission in Dallas, and the “how-to” of worship. The Discovery course will meet at 12:15 in the Coke Activities Room and continue through February, with lunch provided for $10. RSVP to saintmichael.org/discoveryclass Community Leaders Speak at Parish-wide Meeting Wednesday Evening. Three parishioners who have spent a major part of the their careers serving Dallas will discuss “Community Work Through Faith” at the Women of Saint Michael meeting Wednesday evening, January 18. The panel includes Tom Luce, former Assistant Secretary of Education; Dr. Gail Thomas, CEO of the Trinity Trust; and Walt Humann, the “father of DART” and Saint Michael’s Jubilee Park neighborhood revitalization initiative. Parishioner Brad Watson, former political commentator for WFAA-TV, will moderate the discussion. The program begins at 6:30 in the church followed by a reception. Caroline Marak Named Stewardship Manager The Rector, Chris Girata, has announced that Caroline Lewis Marak has joined Saint Michael as Stewardship Manager. Working with the Rector, Vestry, and Stewardship Committee, she will lead the vision and implementation of the church’s financial growth. Previously, she served as Development Coordinator for the Major and Planned Giving division of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, and as Director of Development for the Park Cities YMCA. Caroline has a degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Mississippi and is involved in several community activities in Dallas.

Calling All Artists – The Parish Party Needs You! Whatever your medium – painting, pottery, sculpture, photography, etc. – a piece of your work is needed for the Parish Party art auction. A preview of your art will be in the Parlor on Sunday, February 19 to give parishioners a chance to pick out what items they want to bid on at the February 24 Parish Party. The money raised from the auction will be included in the funds given by the Women of Saint Michael to Dallas area charities addressing poverty and Episcopal ministries. Learn the details about the youth group’s two mission trips this summer at a special information meeting Sunday, January 29 at 10:00 in the Youth Center. Distinguished Lecture: Dr. Amy-Jill Levine – February 11 – 12. Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt, will bring the second in her series of Distinguished Lectures to Saint Michael February 11 and 12 addressing “How Am I Called to be with Others.” On Saturday she will speak on “When My Actions Impact Others – David and Bathsheba” and “When Others Make Demands – Jesus and the Canaanite Woman” in the Coke Activities Room beginning at 9:00. On Sunday, at 10:00 in the Parish Hall, Dr. Levine’s topic will be “When Others Define Themselves – Sarah and Hagar.” Make reservations for the Saturday lecture at www.saintmichael.org/dls. Prime Timers to Hear Psychologist on “Mind, Body, and Wellness.” Dr. Andrew Clifford, a clinical psychologist, will kick off the Prime Timers New Year on Thursday, February 2. Dr. Clifford, formerly with the Stanford and UT Southwestern Medical Centers, works with doctors and patients to shorten hospital stays and reduce suffering and medications associated with chronic pain and illness. Parishioners Being Honored by Diocese of Dallas Parishioners Tony Briggle and Plack Carr are being honored today by the Diocese of Dallas. They will be inducted by Bishop Sumner into The Order of Bishop Garrett during ceremonies at St. Matthew Cathedral at 4:00. The Order of Bishop Garrett is bestowed on lay leaders who have given long and sacrificial ministry to the Diocese of Dallas in gratitude for their faithfulness and dedication to the Church. Tony Briggle, in addition to serving as Acolyte Master at Saint Michael, has chaired the Diocesan Convention for the past seven years, chaired the Bishop’s Transition Tony Briggle Plack Carr and Consecration Committee, and serves as vice chairman of American Friends of the Anglican Centre in Rome. Plack Carr, a former Vestry member and stewardship chair at Saint Michael, was on the founding board of the Episcopal School of Dallas serving as Interim Headmaster and twice as Board Chairman, and has served on the boards of the Episcopal Foundation of Dallas and Gaston Episcopal Hospital.
