The times and location of all other Sunday worship services remain the same. Summer, Fall, and Beyond – A Discussion with the Rector. Next Sunday, August 27, and Sunday, September 3 the Rector will hold an open forum to discuss all of the activities that have taken place during the spring and summer, the church’s exciting fall programs and initiatives, and where Saint Michael seeks to be in the future months and years. The all-adult forum will meet in the church at 10:00 both weeks. A lot has happened and will continue to happen as we become the church we hope to be. Today is Parish Nurse Sunday. Saint Michael’s Parish Nurse is in the South Lanai today providing information on Stroke Awareness. You can also get your blood pressure checked and ask questions about health concerns. Newcomers interested in joining our church should attend the Saint Michael 101 lunch on Sunday, September 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Coke Activities Room. It is the perfect opportunity to explore membership, meet clergy and Vestry members, and learn about our ministries, opportunities for involvement, and exciting future. Youth Pool Party Today Welcomes Chase Monson. All youth, 6th grade through 12th grade, are invited to a Pool Party this afternoon from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. to get to know our new Assistant Youth Director, Chase Monson. Disciples Parents Meeting Today. Parents of the 6th grade Disciples Confirmation class will meet today at 12:30 in the Youth Center to review the class schedule and requirements. Next weekend, August 26-27, the Disciples will go to Camp All Saints on Lake Texhoma for a get-acquainted retreat, which will include a lot of fun. Saint Michael Episcopal School Ready for a New Year. The opening of the school year at Saint Michael Episcopal School is nearing and enrollment has topped 200 this year. Teachers returned this past week for orientation and to begin setting up their classrooms. On Monday, August 28 there will be “Meet the Teacher” from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. and later that evening at 7:00 Parents’ Night is scheduled. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 30.
Deadline for Vestry/Convention Delegate Nominations Extended. Nominations for positions on the Saint Michael Vestry and as a delegate to the Diocesan Convention has been extended to Thursday, August 24. Nomination forms must be turned in to the receptionist in the South Lanai by 4:30 p.m. The election will be at the Parish Meeting on Sunday, October 29. Five new Vestry members will be elected to serve 3 year terms, and three delegates and three alternates will be named to our Convention delegation. Celebrate Oliver Butler’s Saint Michael Ministry Next Sunday. All are invited to honor Oliver Butler and his ministry at Saint Michael next Sunday, August 27, following the Celebration service in Parish Hall. The Rev. Butler is launching a new “For Profit, For Good” ministry leveraging his passion for outdoor cooking and addressing hunger issues in the community. Sin and Redemption Begins in September. The Rev. Tom Blackmon will lead a new discussion class this fall – Stories of Sin and Redemption – using short stories that engage the spiritual and moral questions facing the characters. Beginning September 12, the class will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Chapel Conference Room. Register with Julia Giles at jgiles@saintmichael.org. St. Mary’s Guild – and all their goodies – Returns August 27. The St. Mary’s Guild Bake Table will be back in business Sunday, August 27. Each week there are homemade baked treats, sweets, cakes, and even gluten free goodies. All proceeds go to local charities. Two committees studying the church’s youth program have recommended changing the age at which we confirm young students from 6th grade to 8th grade. Before moving on the recommendation, we will hold Listening Sessions to get the input of parents. The sessions will be held September 12, October 12, and October 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Youth Center. The Prime Timers start their program year with Justin Brooks, Director of Modern Worship Music, who leads our contemporary worship services in Parish Hall. Two of the award winning Satellite Sisters, Lian Dolan and Julie Dolan Smith, will launch the Women of Saint Michael luncheon series on September 13. With humor and affection they will dialogue on “The Importance of Female Friendships in Our Lives.” The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. in Parish Hall. Fall Preaching and Teaching Series Focuses on Exodus - Beginning in September A new preaching and teaching series this fall, “Choosing Freedom – Our Journey with God,” will focus on The Book of Exodus and the choices the Israelites faced in their journey to freedom. On Sunday, September 10 the Rector Chris Girata will begin a seven week series of sermons at 9:00 and 11:00 in the church exploring how the Israelites’ journey to freedom relates to choices we have in our journey with God. The “Choosing Freedom – Our Journey with God” series will continue at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel with The Rev. Mary Lessmann and The Rev. Tom Blackmon expanding on what the journey tells us about God and ourselves, how it plays out in the New Testament, and how it looks in our lives today. Children’s Chapel Included in 9:00 a.m. Church Worship Beginning Next Sunday. A new worship experience for young children, Children’s Chapel, will begin next Sunday, August 27, as part of the 9:00 service in the Church. Children, ages 3 – 7, will join their parents in the Church and following the Collect will go to Bishop Moore Chapel for a simple service of songs, prayer, and lessons. They will rejoin their parents in the Church to participate in Holy Communion as a family.
Sunday School Registration Underway. Registration for fall’s Children and Youth Sunday School is underway. There are ageappropriate classes for children from age 3 through the 5th grade. Our middle school students will do a DVD Bible study, Echo the Story, and high schoolers will engage in Teen Text, making the Bible a dynamic resource for teens. Children and Family Ministry Needs Sunday Teachers. The Children and Family Ministry needs volunteers for its fall Sunday School classes.
