It’s the Season of Easter at Saint Michael and we’re glad you’re here! Please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
In addition to our regular worship services, please join us this afternoon at 4 p.m. for our Choir & Orchestra Concert in the church. The concert is free and will feature beautiful selections from our many choirs, and will include Mozart’s complete “Coronation Mass.” Please take a look at the back of this bulletin for the special events coming up, as well as excellent opportunities to serve in the community. And plan to join us for Pentecost Sunday on May 28!
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. The Word of God
This is the first of four “Symphonic Meditations” that 20th century French composer Olivier Messiaen wrote on the Ascension. Each piece is meant to evoke a specific scriptural passage. This movement is based on this text from the Gospel of St. John, “Father, the hour is come: glorify Thy Son, that Thy Son also may glorify Thee.” Messiaen was among the first generation of composers to follow the French Impressionists, and his music is often best heard with a sense of aural distance, much like one views Impressionist art.

The Nicene Creed (standing)
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. During the season of Easter, we omit the Confession as a way of celebrating Christ’s triumph over sin and the assurance of salvation and new life for all who are joined with him in his death and resurrection.
This anthem was written for Karl Travis and Jacqueline Quinn’s wedding ceremony at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth, in the summer of 2013, where Karl served as senior pastor. The text was written by Edward Taylor, minister of the Congregational Church in Westfield, Massachusetts, and America’s first major poet. Taylor left a manuscript which contained, among other items, a series of over two hundred poems entitled “Sacramental Meditations,” which were composed as spiritual exercises in preparation for administration of the Lord’s Supper.

With an active performing career spanning eight decades, and an impressive class of students that included Darius Milhaud, Albert Schweitzer, and Marcel Dupré, French organist and composer Charles-Marie Widor maintained a lifelong position as one of the country’s most prominent and influential musicians. Widor’s majestic Toccata, the final movement of his fifth symphony remains one of the most popular works in the organ repertoire. This piece, often associated with Easter, is used to conclude the Easter season.
