Palm Sunday

This prelude is based upon a chorus from Handel’s Messiah: “Lift up your heads, o ye gates: and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in.” Handel’s original melody is heard from the very beginning, creating a majestic processional. It is then played in a minor key, to form an energetic fugue, which leads to a powerful restatement of the original material.

Holy Eucharist Rite II

The service begins on page 351 of The Book of Common Prayer.

The Word of God

The text “Hosanna, Hosanna, O Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” is set to a lilting melody, making a welcome fit for a king as Jesus returns to Jerusalem.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lesson Zechariah 9:9-12 (seated)

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Lector The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29 (seated, chanted by the choir) William Crotch

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; * his mercy endures for ever.

Let Israel now proclaim, * “His mercy endures for ever.”

Open for me the gates of righteousness; * I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD.

“This is the gate of the LORD; * he who is righteous may enter.”

I will give thanks to you, for you answered me * and have become my salvation.

The same stone which the builders rejected * has become the chief cornerstone.

3

This is the LORD’S doing, * and it is marvelous in our eyes. On this day the LORD has acted; * we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Hosannah, LORD, hosannah! *

LORD, send us now success.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; * we bless you from the house of the LORD. God is the LORD; he has shined upon us; * form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar.

“You are my God, and I will thank you; * you are my God, and I will exalt you.”

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; * his mercy endures for ever.

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus and his disciples had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated)

The Nicene Creed (standing)

The Reverend Kenneth H. Brannon

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

The Gospel Matthew 21:1-11 (standing)

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People: Form V (standing)

Celebrant Let us now pray for the church and for the world.

Harpsichordist, organist, and visionary choirmaster George Malcolm was one of the leading figures in British music after the Second World War. After serving as organist-choirmaster of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Clapham, he was Master of Music of Westminster Cathedral for 12 years.

Ingrediente Domino is one of his most vivid works and was written specifically for Palm Sunday.

Hosanna to the Son of David

Thomas Weelkes

One of the most prolific composers of Anglican choral service music in the early 17thcentury, Thomas Weelkes spent most of his working life as organist and choir director at Chichester Cathedral. Today’s anthem is the text spoken by the people at Jesus’ entry on the donkey to Jerusalem, which we commemorate today on Palm Sunday. Weelkes alternates a grand, homophonic texture on “Hosanna” with a more complex, multi-voiced texture.

Hosanna to the Son of David, Blessed be the King that cometh

In the name of the Lord, Hosanna. Thou that sittest in the highest heav’ns, Hosanna in excelsis Deo.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Please kneel as you are able

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the

11

new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands.
